SCIENTIST: HOLOGRAPHIC TELEVISION TO BECOME REALITY

LA TECHNOLOGIE HOLOGRAPHIQUE N'EST PAS UN SUJET INCONNU POUR CERTAINS. NOUS SAVONS QU'ELLE SERA UTILISÉE DANS UN AVENIR RAPPROCHÉ POUR DONNER L'ILLUSION AU MONDE QUE LEUR MESSIE ARRIVE. LA SÉDUCTION SERA SANS PAREILLE ET DES MILLIERS DE PERSONNES SUCCOMBERONT À CE CHARME. NOUS AVONS VU DANS LES DERNIERS MOIS QUE CETTE TECHNOLOGIE EST DÉJÀ UTILISÉE PAR NOS GOUVERNEMENTS.

DE GRANDS "MIRACLES" TECHNOLOGIQUES POURRONT ALORS ÊTRE RÉALISÉS SANS QUE LES PERSONNES NE SE DOUTENT DE RIEN. UNE AUTRE GRANDE RÉALISATION NON PAS POUR FAIRE DE CE MONDE UN MONDE MEILLEUR MAIS POUR AMENER LES HOMMES À CROIRE À DES FABLES SANS FIN. LA SÉDUCTION MÉDIATIQUE QU'AMÈNERA CETTE TECHNOLOGIE ACCESSIBLE À TOUS EST UN AUTRE GRAND PIÈGE SPIRITUEL MIS EN PLACE POUR NE PAS QUE VOUS VENIEZ À LA LUMIÈRE.

Researchers have created the first rewritable and erasable holographic images

Holographic televisions could come out of the wall or up from a table

The 3-D hologram technology could have uses in surgery or in the military

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Picture this: you're sat down for the Football World Cup final, or a long-awaited sequel to the "Sex and the City" movie and you're watching all the action unfold in 3-D on your coffee table.

The future of television? This image is an impression of what 3D holographic television may look like.

It sounds a lot like a wacky dream, but don't be surprised if within our lifetime you find yourself discarding your plasma and LCD sets in exchange for a holographic 3-D television that can put Cristiano Ronaldo in your living room or bring you face-to-face with life-sized versions of your gaming heroes.

The reason for renewed optimism in three-dimensional technology is a breakthrough in rewritable and erasable holographic systems made earlier this year by researchers at the University of Arizona.

Dr Nasser Peyghambarian, chair of photonics and lasers at the university's Optical Sciences department, told CNN that scientists have broken a barrier by making the first updatable three-dimensional displays with memory.

"This is a prerequisite for any type of moving holographic technology. The way it works presently is not suitable for 3-D images," he said.

The researchers produced displays that can be erased and rewritten in a matter of minutes.

To create television sets the images would need to be changing multiple times each second -- but Peyghambarian is very optimistic this can happen.

He said the University of Arizona team, which is now ten-strong, has been working on advancing hologram technology since 1990 -- so this is a major step forward. He believes that much of the difficulty in creating a holographic set has now been overcome.

"It took us a while to make that first breakthrough, but as soon as you have the first element of it working the rest often comes more rapidly," he said. "What we are doing now is trying to make the model better. What we showed is just one color, what we are doing now is trying to use three colors. The original display was four inches by four inches and now we're going for something at least as big as a computer screen."

There are no more great barriers to overcome now, he said.

The breakthrough has made some long-time researchers of the technology believe that it could now come to fruition.

Tung H. Jeong, a retired physics professor at Lake Forest College outside Chicago who had studied holography since the 1960s told NJ.com; "When we start talking about erasable and rewritable holograms, we are moving toward the possibility of holographic TV ... It has now been shown that physically, it's possible."

And what might these holographic televisions look like?

According to Peyghambarian, they could be constructed as a screen on the wall (like flat panel displays) that shows 3-D images, with all the image writing lasers behind the wall; or it could be like a horizontal panel on a table with holographic writing apparatus underneath.

So, if this project is realized, you really could have a football match on your coffee table, or horror-movie villains jumping out of your wall.

Peyghambarian is also optimistic that the technology could reach the market within five to ten years. He said progress towards a final product should be made much more quickly now that a rewriting method had been found.

However, it is fair to say not everyone is as positive about this prospect as Peyghambarian.

Justin Lawrence, a lecturer in Electronic Engineering at Bangor University in Wales, told CNN that small steps are being made on technology like 3-D holograms, but, he can't see it being ready for the market in the next ten years.

"It's one thing to demonstrate something in a lab but it's another thing to be able to produce it cheaply and efficiently enough to distribute it to the mass market," Lawrence said.

Yet, there are reasons to be optimistic that more resources will be channeled into developing this technology more quickly.

The Japanese Government is pushing huge financial and technical weight into the development of three-dimensional, virtual-reality television, and the country's Communications Ministry is aiming at having such technology available by 2020.

Peyghambarian said there are no major sponsors of the technology at present, but as the breakthroughs continued, he hopes that will change.

Even if no major electronics company commit themselves, there is hope that backers could come from outside of the consumer electronics industry, he said.

"It could have some other applications. In training it's useful to show people three-dimensional displays. Also it would be good to show things in 3-D for defense command and control and for surgery," he said.

CNN BEAMS STAR WARS TECHNOLOGY FOR ELECTION NIGHT

by Gillian Reagan  |  October 30, 2008 |

via ryan2point0.wordpress.com

Obama's Ahead in Tatooine? Are you ready for this? Next Tuesday, at CNN's Election Center in New York, an Obama campaign strategist will be in the studio to comment on the incoming voting results. Only he'll be … (wait for it) in 3-D! As a hologram!

Instead of the normal flat-screen version of talking heads, the Obama spokesperson's image will be projected from Chicago and into the New York studio -- in a 360 view. CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer will essentially be talking to the strategist just like when Princess Leia sent Obi-Wan Kenobi a hologram message that he was her only hope. Only there will be talk about Ohio, rather than Alderaan.

USA Today has the story and they say CNN also plans to conduct similar holographic interviews with McCain representatives in Phoenix.

How will it work? CNN will be shooting with 44 cameras at each location simultaneously (so they can capture their subject at every angle). Twenty computers at the site, combined with the New York office's hardware, will process and project the image in the studio. The subjects will see Mr. Blitzer and other CNN-ers on TVs at the locations so they can communicate with them properly.

CNN has been on top of their gadget game for the election. The New York Times had this story in April about their enormous, nifty touch-sensitive map that allowed CNN political reporter John King to zoom in on specific cities and towns to display election and polling results. They finally found a way to give the ol' numbers story some visual spunk.

Now they're getting into the 3-D realm. The guy behind it is David Bohrman, CNN senior vice president:

'Everyone is doing something virtual this election year,' says CNN Senior Vice President David Bohrman, the guy who pushed the technology. But Bohrman believes CNN is going where no network has gone before by employing Hollywood-style effects. 'Virtual elements in a real set look so much better than a real person in a virtual set,' he says.

Election night is like the Summer Olympics and Super Bowl for network news divisions, and each is carting out eye-popping technical toys to draw viewers.

'For the big game, you see all the bells and whistles. The real challenge this year is new stuff that will travel easily on multiplatforms,' says Andrew Tyndall, publisher of TyndallReport.com, which monitors television network news. 'Not only must this look good on TV, but on portable devices like cellphones.'

The USA Today story also has updates on some of the things other networks are doing (including lots of HD content and touch-screen maps). But if election night is the Super Bowl, CNN certainly has the Prince halftime show performance this year.

BRITISH AIRPORTS NOW BEAMING HOLOGRAPHIC SECURITY AGENTS

By Christopher Trout  posted Feb 1st 2011 7:22AM

They've brought you presidential election coverage and promoted worldwide access to PCs, and now they're telling you to take off your belt and throw out your hairspray. Starting today, London Luton and Manchester airports will beam in images of holographic agents to prep passengers for the security line. Holly and Graham -- you heard right -- and Manchester's Julie and John are meant to cut queues, as well as human inconsistency. According to Luton's Glyn Jones, "Holly and Graham are not going to have a hangover; they're not going to have a row with their partner the night before." Just what we need: an army of holographic squares taking our jobs and making us all look a drunken mess in comparison. Thanks, technology.

Update: So it appears these aren't traditional holograms -- they're actually huge sheets of glass that are cut out in the shape of people, with the projection beamed on them. It's the same tech that Gorillaz use on stage, made by a company called Musion. Check out another video where the camera moves around the side.

CREEPY COMPUTER-GENERATED AVATAR GREETS TRAVELERS AT NEWARK LIBERTY

Port Authority Of N.Y./N.J. Spends $180,000 On New 'Help' For Area Airports July 27, 2012 7:15 PM

What's this?

Meet “Libby,” a computer-generated avatar that greets travelers at Newark Liberty International Airport. (Photo: CBS 2)

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — The future was among the arrivals at Newark Airport on Friday, in the form of a computer-generated greeter at the gate.

Travelers met “Libby.” She’s Newark Airport’s newest — and perhaps most chipper — customer service rep. You may have noticed that she’s a bit shallow, and she’s completely two-faced, but she’s always smiling, and she never complains.

“Hello, and welcome to Newark Liberty International Airport. You have arrived at Terminal B,” the avatar says.

Libby’s presence seemed to catch arriving passengers off-guard Friday. Some loved her … or it, but not everyone was enchanted by her computer-generated smile, CBS 2’s Alex Denis reported.

“It’s a little bit freaky when you walk down there. Her body doesn’t look real but her head does,” one woman said.

“It’s freaky!” another woman said.

“I think it’s weird,” another said.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spent $180,000 on Libby and four machines like her. It may have been a bargain as some travelers compared it to Leonardo da Vinci’s priceless “Mona Lisa.”

“I think it’s scary. Its eyes follow you,” a traveler said.

“It’s really odd the way her eyes follow you. It’s really odd!” a man added.

According to the Port Authority, Libby’s first day went well, but the agency will continue to keep an eye on her performance — and so will her young customers.

“I talk to her, I don’t know what she means,” one man said.

The Port Authority purchased five machines like Libby. You’ll soon see them at John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports.Mak

HOLOGRAMS FOR FREEDOM : THOUSANDS JOIN VIRTUAL DEMO AGAINST NEW PROTEST LAW IN SPAIN

Ajoutée le 10 avr. 2015

Protesters in Spain have come up with a novel way of taking on a new law that limits the rights of the public to take part in demonstrations. There was a large turnout, but nobody even came close to being arrested – because no one actually attended the protest. A number of holograms were projected outside Spanish parliament building, showing people across the globe, who are angry at the new so-called ‘safety’ law, which makes it illegal to protest outside government buildings, insult police officers or refuse to reveal identification documents.

Since last Monday’s Ferguson Grand Jury decision, protests have stretched out across the country, reaching communities of all kinds, including Pagan and Heathen. THESE PROTESTS HAVE MANIFESTED IN MANY FORMS BOTH IN REAL LIFE AND IN THE DIGITAL WORLD, and continue on today and, most likely, well beyond. However, prior to last week’s announcement, there were Pagans and Heathens already involved in supporting the Ferguson community. Several weeks ago, a local organizer sent out a tweet asking if anyone would be willing to donate tents “to be used to keep peaceful protesters warm.” Led by T. Thorn Coyle, a group of Bay Area Pagans took up the call and raised enough funds to purchase and ship two 10 X 20 tents with sidewalls. Coyle said, “Glenn Turner of Ancient Ways and Pantheacon, Ryan Smith of Heathens United Against Racism, Yeshe Rabbit of CAYA Coven, Crystal Blanton, Jonathan Korman of Solar Cross Temple, and Rhett Aultmun all donated to make this happen … I pray that love, equity, and justice will prevail.”

NEW CENTIMETER-ACCURATE GPS SYSTEM COULD TRANSFORM VIRTUAL REALITY AND MOBILE DEVICES

by Staff Writers
Austin TX (SPX) May 08, 2015

Researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin have developed a centimeter-accurate GPS-based positioning system that could revolutionize geolocation on virtual reality headsets, cellphones and other technologies, making global positioning and orientation far more precise than what is currently available on a mobile device.

The researchers' new system could allow unmanned aerial vehicles to deliver packages to a specific spot on a consumer's back porch, enable collision avoidance technologies on cars and allow virtual reality (VR) headsets to be used outdoors.

The researchers' new centimeter-accurate GPS coupled with a smartphone camera could be used to quickly build a globally referenced 3-D map of one's surroundings that would greatly expand the radius of a VR game. Currently, VR does not use GPS, which limits its use to indoors and usually a two- to three-foot radius.

"Imagine games where, rather than sit in front of a monitor and play, you are in your backyard actually running around with other players," said Todd Humphreys, assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and lead researcher. "To be able to do this type of outdoor, multiplayer virtual reality game, you need highly accurate position and orientation that is tied to a global reference frame."

Humphreys and his team in the Radionavigation Lab have built a low-cost system that reduces location errors from the size of a large car to the size of a nickel - a more than 100 times increase in accuracy. Humphreys collaborated with Professor Robert W. Heath from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and graduate students on the new technology, which they describe in a recent issue of GPS World.

Centimeter-accurate positioning systems are already used in geology, surveying and mapping, but the survey-grade antennas these systems employ are too large and costly for use in mobile devices.

The breakthrough by Humphreys and his team is a powerful and sensitive software-defined GPS receiver that can extract centimeter accuracies from the inexpensive antennas found in mobile devices - such precise measurements were not previously possible. The researchers anticipate that their software's ability to leverage low-cost antennas will reduce the overall cost of centimeter accuracy, making it economically feasible for mobile devices.

Humphreys and his team have spent six years building a specialized receiver, called GRID, to extract so-called carrier phase measurements from low-cost antennas. GRID currently operates outside the phone, but it will eventually run on the phone's internal processor.

To further develop this technology, Humphreys and his students recently co-founded a startup, called Radiosense. Humphreys and his team are working with Samsung to develop a snap-on accessory that will tell smartphones, tablets and virtual reality headsets their precise position and orientation.

The researchers designed their system to deliver precise position and orientation information - how one's head rotates or tilts - to less than one degree of measurement accuracy. This level of accuracy could enhance VR environments that are based on real-world settings, as well as improve other applications, including visualization and 3-D mapping.

Additionally, the researchers believe their technology could make a significant difference in people's daily lives, including transportation, where centimeter-accurate GPS could lead to better vehicle-to-vehicle communication technology.

"If your car knows in real time the precise position and velocity of an approaching car that is blocked from view by other traffic, your car can plan ahead to avoid a collision," Humphreys said.

THE UN USING VIRTUAL REALITY, IMMERSIVE ‘WORMHOLE’ TO CONNECT DIPLOMATS WITH SYRIAN REFUGEES

On their way to this month’s 70th United Nation’s General Assembly, the organization’s annual high-level meeting in New York, diplomats and world leaders will pass by a makeshift glass structure—both a glossy multi-media hub, and a gateway to an entirely different world.

The hub uses virtual reality to allow the UN attendees to see Jordan’s Zaatari camp for Syrian refugees through the eyes of a little girl. And, by using an immersive video portal, which will launch later this week, they will have the opportunity to have face-to-face conversations with residents of the camp.

The effort aims to put a human face on the high-level deliberations about the refugee crisis, which will likely dominate many conversations at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has called on the meeting to be “one of compassion, prevention and, above all, action.” = Show also your compassion by showing us what's going on in Chinese prisons and North Korean prison, in camp no.22 where the opposants and christians are locks.

Ban’s own UN Millennium Campaign is running the hub in New York.

“Between the VR and the portal, we want to eliminate the power distance, to create empathy,” Mitchell Toomey, director of the campaign, tells Quartz. It isn’t possible to physically transport the diplomats to a refugee camp, but this comes pretty close.

The war in Syria, now in its fifth year, has forced more than 4 million people out of the country. Many of them are now making their way to Europe, which is struggling to accommodate the influx of people. Meanwhile, millions more have stayed in the region, in overflowing refugee camps in Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan. More than 80,000 people now live in Zaatari, where UNICEF collaborated with the artist collective Shared Studios to set up their own portal.

Through the eyes of Sidra

The UN hub filled with interactive screens is designed to promote the UN’s “Global Goals,” also known as Sustainable Development Goals—a set of 17 targets such as ending poverty or fixing climate change, which will be discussed during a pivotal summit of the General Assembly on Sept. 27-28.

The Millennium Campaign is running the media center in cooperation with Facebook, which is there showcasing its internet.org, a controversial effort to bring affordable web access to developing countries. Mark Zuckerberg is expected to make an appearance.

One of the Millennium Campaign’s projects is “Clouds Over Sidra,” an acclaimed 9-minute virtual reality documentary, viewed using gear made by Samsung and Facebook’s Oculus Rift division. Filmed in Zaatri, the documentary follows the daily life of a young girl, dropping the viewer amidst the thousands of light-colored tents pitched on the Jordanian desert, where entire families live in barebones conditions. = thousands of light-colored = connect to the Year of Light 2015.

The film shows a camp filled with children. “There are more kids in Zaatari than adults right now,” Sidra says. “Sometimes I think we are the ones in charge.”

For the ones who saw the 'Left Behind series", these "glasses" was opening a portal with the underworld when you come face to face with Lucifer and were you have to make a choice to accept or to deny the mark of the Beast. If peoples deny it they've been kill by guillotine. If they accept they become a slave of Lucifer as a mark of loyauty. Is this what we are seeing here?

After watching “Clouds over Sidra,” diplomats visiting the center will be able to have a real-time conversation with someone living in the camp through a portal, completing the simulated visit to Zaatari.

A wormhole to another world

The portal experience has already linked US cities like New York, San Francisco, and Washington to locales in Afghanistan, Iran, Cuba, Mexico, and Honduras.

The creator of the portalsAmar Bakshi, describes them as a “global art project,” meant to connect communities that otherwise never come into close contact. The project’s website says its intent is to “to carve wormholes around the world.”

With the exception of the UN location, which will be housed within the multimedia hub, the portals are identical, and resemble shipping containers made from wood, covered with a corrugated golden metal sheet. They are relatively cheap ($2,750), and easy to set up, requiring Internet access, two 120V outlets, and a camera, computer, projector, screen, and lights.

The interiors are dark, acoustically isolated, and climate controlled. A person in Iran, for example, can enter into a portal, and talk directly to someone in Washington, D.C.

“It’s very much about two individuals meeting in an identical interior environment even though their exterior environment and their backgrounds, their context couldn’t be more different,” says Bakshi.

The key is to have people make eye contact “within what feels to be a shared space,” he says. The conversations take about 20 minutes.

Some of the portals are designed to be permanent, some of them temporary. The UN portal will be only temporary, but the Zaatari one will become a fixed part of the network. Shared Studios is also planning portals in Zimbabwe, China, and Iraq.

Their purpose, Bakshi adds, is “for people to have a way to communicate with different communities which are often only accessible unidirectionally, like when you watch a YouTube clip or read a media story.

During one visit to a portal, a Washington hip hop artist collaborated with rappers in Afghanistan; during another, an Iranian-American dancer performed live for his family in Tehran. Elementary school-students from the US capital learned in astonishment that their Iranian counterparts played video games.

A bridge between high-level talks and their subjects

Bakshi said the UN-Zaatari link is one-of-a-kind. “It is about world leaders and decision-makers talking directly to people in the camps, not landing with an entourage, but being an individual in this space, and vice versa,” he says.

Gabo Arora, creator of “Clouds Over Sidra,” who approached Bakshi about the collaboration, adds that “there will be an element of spontaneity, an element of direct conversation that is not planned,” as opposed to the “high level proceedings that are very curated, very controlled.”

Arora is counting on the connection’s emotional resonance—the kind that was so strongly evoked by the image of the drowned Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi.

It’s because stories and images seem to be changing public opinion, now we want to do this in a very targeted way for certain people,” he says. The Zaatari side organizers plan to have many children and youth enter the portal.

Although any UNGA attendee will be welcome to enter the portal, the organizers are approaching certain delegations and individuals. Arora wouldn’t disclose who they are, but, he said they are being “strategic,” and coming at it from an “advocacy angle.” He says his motivation has always been a plea for resettlement and a political solution to the crisis.

Arora cites the industriousness of the refugees at Zaatari—the bakeries, the barber shops, the commerce. He hopes that when the delegates, and later on, the public, talk to the refugees, they would realize that any country that took them in would benefit from their spirit: “they are intelligent, they are resilient, they are ingenious.”

When the diplomats are faced with important decisions, votes, Arora hopes that after visiting the hub, they would “have a real and true understanding of what their decisions mean.”

The portal conversations usually include prompts from the creators, such as “What would make today a good day for you?” It will be tricky how to curate the Zaatari-UN connection, Arora says. It’s a sensitive situation when “you have one person who holds this unbelievable amount of hierarchical power, relatively, to another person.”

The project aims to shift that balance, even ever so slightly.

Imagine playing an immersive video game where you are battling robot attackers right in your own living room, or shopping for sneakers from the comfort of your sofa, with realistic 3D images of the shoes floating right in front of you. It sounds like science fiction, but a new tech company, Magic Leap, is about to make it all real with a new technology called "mixed-reality" -- or MR for short. Wire Magazine senior staff writer Jessi Hempel got to sample MR technology at Magic Leap's South Florida headquarters. She joins "CBS This Morning: Saturday" to discuss her experience, how the technology works and why it could be a game changer.

BIG DATA, 3D PRINTINGS AND ROBOTS : MARINE CORPS COMMANDANT TOUTS ONR S&T

By David Smalley, Office of Naval Research

ARLINGTON, Va. (NNS) -- Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Robert B. Neller recently visited the Office of Naval Research to get a close-up look at some of the latest technologies being developed for the U.S. Marine Corps, from autonomous systems to virtual reality training devices, officials announced May 10.

During his visit, Neller met with Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Mat Winter, as well as department heads and program officers, and expressed his appreciation for the science and technology being designed for the future force.

"The Marine Corps and the Office of Naval Research have a long, great history of working together to improve the operational capability of our force, and make sure that on any battlefield, we're going to come out on top," he said.

Before going into briefings, the CMC reviewed some of the research and technologies being advanced at ONR, designed to ensure technological dominance for the Marines of today and tomorrow. Some of those programs included swarming unmanned air vehicles, mobile laser weapons and virtual reality training technologies.

"From a warfighter's perspective, our ONR mission is quite simply to ensure our Marines and Sailors have the technological advantage in every engagement," said Winter after the meeting. "We are dedicated to making sure our men and women on the front lines have the unmatched technological edge over any adversary."

Neller reflected on some of the technological capabilities that will be vital to the Marine Corps of the future. That includes better management of big data - that is, the massive influx of information available to today's warfighters through shipboard sensors, remote satellites, unmanned vehicles, intelligence collection and other data sources.

"The ability to access big data through our autonomous intelligence" will be of paramount importance, he said.

ONR is currently working on a number of programs on the big data front that could be of great importance for future Marine Corps operational requirements. The data-focused Naval Tactical Cloud, for instance, will integrate large volumes of incoming data from multiple sources; provide afloat intelligence analysis capabilities for Navy and Marine Corps intelligence teams; and provide tactical intelligence support for expeditionary warfare planning and execution, among other uses.

Other priorities highlighted by the CMC include new capabilities in three-dimensional printing - everything from manufacturing difficult-to-find replacement parts for weapons or vehicles, all the way up to creating shelter for Marines in theater, rather than having to find and secure existing facilities. The possibilities for 3D printing that ONR is looking into could also serve to lighten the load for the individual Marine, as well as Marine platforms, a longstanding priority for ONR and the USMC.

And robotic devices and unmanned systems, Neller said, could perform duties that will help reduce risk for Marines on land, at sea or in the air.

Ultimately, he suggested, it will be the front-line users who will best determine what works for the Marines, and what doesn't.

"We have an active duty Marine Corps unit where we're going to give these Marines some of these capabilities - like small unmanned air systems with cameras and sensors, certain communications capabilities, certain mobility capabilities - and let them go out and tell us if they have utility or not, give them operational advantage or create a logistical burden," he said.

Any new technologies will need to be reliable and mobile, he emphasized.

"At the end of the day, they've got to be able to be put on a ship, come off a ship, and go ashore."

David Smalley is a contractor for ONR Corporate Strategic Communications.

Video game developers and virtual reality experts could be working on the next wave of educational technology.

This week, the Education Department kicked off the EdSim Challenge, a $680,000 contest in search of ways to use simulation in the classroom, especially for career and technical skills training in preparation for joining the workforce.

The contest is designed to "stimulate the marketplace" for virtual and augmented reality technology. Virtual reality is loosely defined as systems that convince the users they're somewhere else; augmented reality involves features overlaid on the real world. The agency also encourages developers to make their technology shareable, perhaps by using open source licenses.

Finalists could win $50,000 and help with building a prototype. A grand prize winner could get $430,000. Winners will be evaluated on their concept's ability to change "learning outcomes" or whether it "spurs change or improvement in the user’s knowledge and skills," among other criteria.

Interested developers must submit a concept proposal by Jan. 17.

The competition comes a few months after a group of virtual reality proponents came to Washington, urging Congress to consider investing in the technology for education and training purposes.

During that event, the Education Department's acting assistant secretary for career, technical and adult education, Johan Uvin, said virtual reality headsets could be used to expose children to environments that are vocabulary-rich, even if their home life isn't.

Investing in virtual reality could "get us to a point where our infrastructure for learning is not based on brick and mortar," Uvin said then.

Movie. In this video made by the luciferians Jesuits and luciferians mormons and sold in the christians community, they are showing us this technology of virtual reality. See who's in the other side and what's happening the other side. I don't say that they use it for the mark but who knows? This is a virtual reality control by demons. They also use Hollywood stars in this film and some pastors who are associate to the ecumenical religion. You don't see any real christians in this movie. It's a Hollywood production.

OUT OF YOUR MIND : JAPANESE STUDENTS EXPERIENCE DEMENTIA VIA VR

© AP Photo/ Manu Fernandez, File Tech 14:13 29.11.2016(updated 14:14 29.11.2016)

What does it feel like to forget where you are and why you are at this place – in other words, what is it like to suffer the symptoms of dementia? A Japanese company has made VR videos giving the experience of just this.

Silver Wood Corp., operator of a housing complex for elderly people, has developed a virtual reality video that allows people to experience what it feels like to have dementia in hopes it will increase understanding of the illness, the Japan Times reported.

In October, 20 students from Keio University watched three short VR videos at a housing complex in the city of Funabashi, in Chiba Prefecture.

When they put on the VR headsets, they saw a video that made them feel like a woman sitting on a train, not knowing where she was. The surrounding scenery was unfamiliar to her.

In addition to the experience on the train, there are two others scenarios: what it feels like to lose the ability to gauge distances, such as how far to the ground, which makes it frightening for some to walk, and what it feels like to lose all sense of time and location.

Silver Wood made the video with the help of staff at nursing facilities to raise awareness of the illness, which is manifested through a variety of symptoms. And VR seemed like a suitable media platform for others to experience what it is like to suffer dementia,” the company’s president Tadamichi Shimogawara told Kyodo news agency.

Shimogawara, who hopes to create a better understanding of the illness, said, “There is a reason behind the behavior of dementia patients, and I don’t want people to discriminate against them just because of their symptoms.”

ARLINGTON, Va. (NNS) -- Battlefield commanders face many scenarios requiring fast decisions -- attacking an enemy position, evacuating injured warfighters, navigating unfamiliar terrain. Each situation pushes leaders to make quick, yet informed choices.

To enhance these decision-making capabilities, especially for small-unit leaders, the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines (2/6) -- "The Spartans" -- recently held a weeklong exercise called Spartan Emerging Technology and Innovation Week at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The event, also called Spartan Week, featured various training technologies, from quadcopters to augmented reality, developed with support from the Office of Naval Research to accelerate the development of decision-making skills.

"We are working with 2/6 to develop a suite of new training tools that are easy to implement, tailorable to Marines' needs, and include the ability to assess decision-making skills," said Dr. Peter Squire, a program officer in ONR's expeditionary maneuver warfare and combating terrorism department. "Exercises like Spartan Week enable the Marine Corps to better examine the use of training technologies to improve tactical decision making at the small-unit level."

During Spartan Week, Marines used several ONR-sponsored technologies. These included the Interactive Tactical Decision Game (I-TDG) with an associated augmented-reality headset, the Augmented Immersive Team Trainer (AITT), and a quadcopter-based system for surveying and modeling terrain quickly.

I-TDG is a web technology-based application which allows Marines to plan missions and conduct "what if" tactical-decision games or simulation-based exercises. It supports maps and multimedia tools and links to ONR's HoloLens augmented-reality headset.

AITT comprises a laptop, software and battery pack, and helmet-mounted display, and can support forward-observer training in live field environments. It employs augmented-reality technology, which inserts virtual objects into a real environment to create realistic tactical scenarios -- including friendly and opposing ground vehicles, aircraft, and battlefield effects such as explosions from mortar shells and artillery.

To rapidly develop terrain models to support these technologies, Marines were trained to operate a prototype, quadcopter-based terrain-mapping system. Two Camp Lejeune training sites were flown over and mapped out, and the resulting imagery was used to build terrain models for the training systems.

"Small-unit leaders are tasked with making big mission decisions in an extremely short time window," said Natalie Steinhauser, a senior research psychologist at Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division in Orlando, Florida, who took part in Spartan Week. "These decisions not only impact the success or failure of a mission, they affect life and death. With technologies like I-TDG, Marines can perform simulated missions in a safe classroom environment, carry out multiple missions, and even use I-TDG as an after-action review tool."

Steinhauser said Camp Lejeune's Spartan Week was a success and another event will be held at another location early this year. Perhaps the real measures of success, however, are endorsements from Marines who participated.

"For me, the best part of I-TDG was re-creating simulated battles we conducted during past field exercises and using the system as a debrief on what we did wrong and how we could be better," said Lt. Andrew Veal. "Like athletes watching game film, you really experienced that 'a-ha' moment."

"The Spartan Week technology enabled all Marines, from squad leaders to riflemen, to evaluate their ability to make fast decisions," said Cpl. Fredrick Zuberer. "Marines tend to focus on using their bodies as weapons, but the most important weapon is the mind. Spartan Week helped sharpen that weapon beyond just pulling a trigger."

THE FUTURE OF COMMERCE, FROM ANCIENT ROME TO VIRTUAL REALITY | MORGAN LINTON | TEDxRoma

In connection with virtual reality. The new Roman reality for modern commerce of the 21th century. To move in a cashless society and the coming obligation to be microchip to be able to buy to this big roman corporations who are now taking down the small business all around the world.

US NAVY GUNNERS ARE TESTING A WEARABLE HEADS-US DISPLAY

July 24, 2017
Alan Antczak

A service lab has turned a lieutenant’s brainstorm into a testable prototype dubbed the GunnAR augmented-reality headset.

In just a year, a wearable headset designed to help U.S. Navy gunnery sailors cut through the fog of combat has evolved from a lieutenant’s brainstorm to a prototype being tested in various exercises.

Conceived by a junior officer aboard the destroyer Gridley, the idea for GunnAR was presented at last year’s ONR Innovation Jam, where it received first prize — and $100,000 to make it real. After rapid progressions through various development milestones, the blue-tinted visor was put to the test in the Trident Warrior 2017 experiment aboard USS Bunker Hill, where sailors used it to put live fire on targets.

But what does GunnAR do, exactly? It is meant to facilitate communication between the ship’s gunnery liaison officer and the sailors manning the ship’s smaller guns. The headset is wirelessly connected to a tablet, which the officer uses to direct the gunner’s attention toward targets, and to start or stop firing. Cues and other information — infrared imagery, distances to targets — appear in a heads-up display projected on the visor. The system thus helps the sailor to see exactly what his or her officer wants him or her to do, all without having to rely on shouted orders, radio transmitters, or sound-powered telephones.

GunnAR is part of the military’s growing fascination with augmented and virtual reality. VR allows soldiers to train for battle without wasting expensive ammunition, while AR may eventually be used by commanders on the battlefield to pinpoint objectives and highlight threats to their troops. The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific’s Battlespace Exploitation of Mixed Reality (BEMR) Lab, the outfit that made Lt. Robert McClenning’s idea a reality, frequently tests such technology.

In September, GunnAR will be part of in the CITADEL PROJECT waterside security experiment at Naval Base San Diego. In the year or so after, it is expected that DoD’s Physical Security Enterprise & Analysis Group will provide funding to produce and distribute the technology on a wider scale.
