NAVY CHAPLAINS BRING CHURCH TO CHATTANOOGA SERVICE MEMBERS

Story Number: NNS150726-02Release Date: 7/26/2015 11:06:00 PM

By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Michael J. Lieberknecht, Navy Public Affairs Support Element East

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (NNS) -- Navy chaplains from areas surrounding Tennessee held ministry services July 26 at the Air National Guard building for Sailors and Marines displaced from their offices after the shooting at Navy Operational Support Center Chattanooga July 16.

"We are here because we want to be here for the Sailors and Marines," said Lt. Cmdr. David Hicks, a Navy chaplain from Charleston, South Carolina. "They don't have the choice of going down the street to their regular church, so we come here to give them that which they cant have."

Services were offered in two different rooms for Catholic service and Protestant worship. The focus of the services was coming together for healing.

"The uniform of faith is not about our differences, but our unity as people," said Lt. Joel DeGraeve, Navy chaplain from Columbus, Ohio. "To reach out to each other and build each other up when we're having life struggles is the real church."

The supporting chaplains arrived in Chattanooga shortly after the shooting to provide any peace of mind to the service members.

"Through counseling, prayer, encouragement and good solid advice and being able to comfort them at a time like this are things we have been doing everyday," said Lt. Cmdr. Dan Reardon, Navy chaplain from Meridian, Mississippi.

The chaplains will continue to work 14- to 18-hour days with Sailors and Marines affected by the events on July 16.

"In this situation we're focused on supporting our families, Sailors and Marines in this community," said Reardon.

Crisis-Response Deployment to Lafayette Coincides with Ongoing Ministry Following Devastating Floods in Kentucky

Contact: Erik Ogren, Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, 704-401-2117, eogren@bgea.org

CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 24, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- Crisis-trained chaplains with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team are on the ground in Louisiana following last night's mass shooting at Lafayette's Grand 16 movie theater. According to news reports, the gunman killed two people in the attack before taking his own life.

"Intense chaos and trauma follow a tragedy like this, not just for those who were in the theater facing a life-and-death struggle, but for the entire community," said Jack Munday, international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team. "Our trained and experienced chaplains will minister to the emotional and spiritual needs of those traveling through the valley of grief and suffering. Please pray for everybody who has been devastated by this shooting."

The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team was formed in the days following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Since that time, the crisis-chaplaincy ministry has come alongside and supported survivors following more than 15 shooting-related tragedies, including the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., and school shootings at Newtown, Conn., Virginia Tech University and Northern Illinois University.

"Shootings have a terror-filled and utterly hopeless nature to them," said Munday. "Whereas you can often see a natural disaster brewing, there is no warning with a shooting. You have one individual who desires to do great harm to others. The immediacy of the situation, coupled with the debilitating fear it brings and the sudden loss of life, causes so much pain and angst across a wide spectrum of people."

In addition to the response in Lafayette, the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team currently has chaplains in Johnson County, Ky., following widespread flooding there.

THE OATH OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, KNIGHTS OF MALTA AND RHODES SCHOLARS IS BASED UPON THE OATH OF THE JESUITS

..."I do further declare that the doctrine of the Churches of England and Scotland, of the Calvinists, Huguenots, and others of the name of Protestants or Masons to be damnable, and they themselves to be damned who will not forsake the same."

"I do further declare that I will help assist, and advise all or any of His Holiness's agents, in any place where I should be, in Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Ireland, or America, or in any other kingdom or territory I shall come to and do my utmost to extirpate the heretical Protestant or Masonic doctrines and to destroy all their pretended powers, legal or otherwise."

"I do further promise and declare that, notwithstanding I am dispensed with to assume any religion heretical for the propagation of the Mother Church's interest to keep secret and private all her agents' counsels from time to time, as they intrust me and not divulge, directly or indirectly, by word, writing, or circumstances whatever but to execute all that should be proposed, given in charge or discovered unto me by you my Ghostly Father, or any of this sacred order."

"I do further promise and declare that I will have no opinion or will of my own or any mental reservation whatsoever, even as a corpse or cadaver (perinde ac cadaver), but will unhesitatingly obey each and every command that I may receive from my superiors in the militia of the Pope and of Jesus Christ."

"That I will go to any part of the world whithersoever I may be sent, to the frozen regions north, jungles of India, to the centers of civilization of Europe, or to the wild haunts of the barbarous savages of America without murmuring or repining, and will be submissive in all things whatsoever is communicated to me."

"I do further promise and declare that I will, when opportunity presents, make and wage relentless war, secretly and openly against all heretics, Protestants and Masons, as I am directed to do to extirpate them from the face of the whole earth; and that I will spare neither age, sex, or condition, and that will hang, bum, waste, boil, flay, strangle, and bury alive these infamous heretics; rip up the stomachs and wombs of their women, and crush their infants' heads against the wails in order to annihilate their execrable race. That when the same can not be done openly, I will secretly use the poisonous cup, the strangulation cord, the steel of the poniard, or the leaden bullet, regardless of the honor, rank, dignity, or authority of the persons, whatever may be their condition in life, either public or private, as I at any time may be directed so to do by any agents of the Pope or superior of the Brotherhood of the Holy Father of the Society of Jesus."...

K of C Christian Refugee Relief Fund provides desperately needed aid

Contact: Andrew Walther, 203-824-5412, andrew.walther@kofc.org; Joseph Cullen, 203-415-9314, joseph.cullen@kofc.org

NEW HAVEN, Conn., July 24, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- Having already donated more than $3 million in humanitarian aid to persecuted Christians and other religious minorities in the Middle East, the Knights of Columbus will expand its efforts even further with a national campaign to raise funds and foster awareness of the terrible suffering of Christians and others in the Middle East.

As part of the K of C effort, a new commercial on the issue will be airing nationally beginning this weekend. It can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4GlYu-iBRA&feature=youtu.be

The Knights will also announce additional details of its program to aid Christian refugees at its international convention being held August 4-6 in Philadelphia. In attendance will be archbishops from Iraq and Syria, where the violence against Christians has been particularly severe.

An exposé on the deafening silence of the international community on this issue will be explored by The New York Times Magazine in an upcoming cover story, "Is This the End of Christianity in the Middle East?"

In the article, set to reach newsstands this Sunday, July 26, author Eliza Oswold reports that, "according to a Pew study, more Christians are now faced with religious persecution than at any time since their early history."

The Knights began its Christian Refugee Relief Fund in August 2014 with $1 million in matching funds that was quickly met and exceeded by its members and the public. The humanitarian assistance provided has included new housing for those who have had to flee their homes, as well as support for medical facilities in areas flooded with Christian and other refugees.

"Christians in the Middle East are facing a dire situation -- and even extinction -- while the response from the international community has woefully inadequate," said Knights of Columbus CEO Carl Anderson. "Pope Francis has urged the international community to take action to help Christians in the Middle East, and as an organization that has long supported victims of religious persecution, the Knights of Columbus is responding by asking our own members, and the public at large, to help us save the lives of people who are being persecuted simply because of their Christian faith."

Those wishing to assist with the relief efforts can donate by visiting www.christiansatrisk.org or by sending checks or money orders payable to Knights of Columbus Charities at P.O. Box 1966, New Haven, CT 06509-1966. The memo portion should indicate that the check is for Christian Refugee Relief.

One hundred percent of all donations directly supports humanitarian assistance and raising awareness for persecuted Christians and other religious minorities, especially in the Middle East. Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., is recognized by the IRS as a charitable organization under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code.

The K of C has a long history of providing humanitarian relief and has done so following the 9/11 terrorist attacks; the 2013 typhoons in the Philippines; hurricanes Katrina and Sandy; nationwide tornadoes; flooding in Mexico; and tsunamis in Indonesia and Japan.

In the area of support for victims of religious persecution, the Knights provided humanitarian assistance and created international awareness of the persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico throughout the 1920s.

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal organization with nearly 1.9 million members worldwide. One of the most active charitable organizations in the United States, the Knights of Columbus donated more than $173.5 million and 71.5 million hours of service in 2014.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 17, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- Crisis-trained chaplains with the  Billy Graham Rapid Response Team are in California to minister to the emotional and spiritual needs of those who have been affected by the widespread  Butte and  Valley Fires.

The two wildfires have collectively burned more than 140,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes.  News reports indicate that there are three confirmed fatalities, with several more people missing. Neither fire is contained, with thousands of homes and other structures still threatened.

"These fires are fierce and their destructive strength is overwhelming," said Jack Munday, international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team. "There are so many that need our prayers at a time such as this. Please join us in praying for the firefighters who are placing their lives on the line, for the authorities overseeing the entire situation, and especially for those who have lost loved ones and homes in this tragedy."

Efforts will begin in earnest over the coming days as additional chaplains arrive and homeowners are allowed to return to what is left of their homes to begin the difficult process of recovery.

The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team has responded in coordination with Samaritan's Purse, the Christian disaster relief organization headed by Franklin Graham, who is also president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

The response to the Butte and Valley Fires will be the first wildfire deployments for the chaplaincy ministry this year. This is the fourth year that the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team has traveled to California for fire-related disasters, following efforts near San Diego in 2003; Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Santa Fe, Madera and Fallbrook in 2007; and Yorba Linda in 2008.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 2, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- In coordination with area churches and government authorities, crisis-trained chaplains with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team have been dispatched to Roseburg, Ore., in response to the shooting at Umpqua Community College. Several news reports indicate that ten people were killed including the shooter, and many more wounded, in the Thursday morning attack.

"It breaks your heart," said Jack Munday, international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, after learning of the shooting. "You just don't expect something like this to happen, and the sudden, violent and evil nature of it just compounds the suffering. Please join us in praying for the devastated families that lost loved ones, and for all of those who witnessed and survived this horrific attack."

Umpqua Community College is located near Roseburg, Ore., a community of just over 21,000 some 70 miles south of Eugene, Ore. Approximately 3,000 full-time students and 16,000 part-time students attend classes on the 100-acre campus.

The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team has provided emotional and spiritual care following more than 15 shootings since its inception, including the tragedies at Virginia Tech, Northern Illinois University, and Newtown, Conn.

Billy Graham Rapid Response Team chaplains are also currently assisting homeowners in California who have been affected by the Butte and Valley wildfires, which have jointly burned more than 145,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes.

BILLY GRAHAM RAPID RESPONSE TEAM SENDS INTERNATIONALLY - COORDINATED TEAM OF CHAPLAINS TO PARIS FOLLOWING TERRORIST ATTACKS

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 15, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- In the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks that shocked Paris Friday night, a team of chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team is headed to France's capital city to offer emotional and spiritual care.

At the direction of Franklin Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA), an international consortium of BGEA's U.S., Canada and U.K. Rapid Response Teams has coordinated together to send six French-speaking, crisis-trained chaplains to offer emotional and spiritual care and support in the heart of Paris.

"Join me in praying for the French people," Franklin Graham said, "all those injured and the loved ones of the victims of these barbaric attacks."

Jack Munday, international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, added, "This has been reported as the worst tragedy in France since World War II. We want to encourage them, let them know we’re here to support them."

The chaplains—who will be working directly with a church in Paris, as well as up to three other Christian organizations—are scheduled to arrive on Monday morning. This will be the first BGEA internationally-coordinated relief effort since the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

Billy Graham's ministry in Paris included four Crusades, most recently in 1986. BGEA's Internet Evangelism ministry has partnered with Paris-based Jesus.net since 2011.

"We'll be there for the people on the streets, the storekeepers, the café workers to listen and provide comfort," Munday said. "They need to know that God loves them and hasn't forgotten them."

SHARING HOPE IN CRISIS  : THE BILLY GRAHAM EVANGELISTIC ASSOCIATION RELEASES ONLINE PROGRAM TO EQUIP STUDENTS IN COMFORTING OTHERS

I'm sure it's connect to the Rapid Response Team and the Homeland Security program

Contact: Erik Ogren, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, 704-577-2109, eogren@bgea.org

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 12, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- The sad reality is that young people are not impervious to the suffering and anguish brought about by tragedies. From broken relationships to traffic accidents, they are faced with real and painful struggles as they are trying to navigate the changing world around them.

Recognizing this, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) has released Sharing Hope in Crisis Student Training, a new online program which provides practical help to prepare Christian students (ages 15−19) to share God's hope with friends, neighbors, and anyone who is suffering—whether in the aftermath of a disaster or from the tragedies of everyday life.

Sharing Hope in Crisis Student Training draws upon years of ministry and crisis response from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, the international network of chaplains who have been specially-trained to offer emotional and spiritual care following natural and man-made disasters. The organization has held several student training events across the country, but this is the first time that same material is available to everybody regardless of location.

"When life falls apart, it's so important to be there for your friend, to love them and help them see that God loves them too," said Jack Munday, international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team. "We want to equip our students so they don't need to hide from their friends, but can instead show compassion and walk alongside them as they struggle through the valley."

Sharing Hope in Crisis Student Training focuses on four key areas:

  1. When Crisis Happens: Understanding how a traumatic event affects the way people comprehend things and alters their perspective.

  2. Good News: Sharing the Gospel in a way that brings hope, not more pain or guilt.

  3. Good Communication: Utilizing questions and good listening skills to help others.

  4. Sharing Hope: Understanding the right things to say and do, in order to let healing begin.

The class can be found at BillyGrahamOnlineTraining.org. It consists of eight self-paced lessons, and costs $40. Students have three months to complete the program. The program is all-inclusive, with no additional books or materials required.

Sharing Hope in Crisis Student Training is the latest offering added to the BGEA's online evangelism training ministry. It joins the traditional Sharing Hope in Crisis course, Schools of Evangelism Online, and ReIgnite (the online version of the Christian growth and evangelism course taught in cities holding BGEA outreaches).

SHOOTING IN SAN BERNARDINO : BILLY GRAHAM RAPID RESPONSE TEAM CHAPLAINS OFFER HOPE AND COMFORT FOLLOWING THE ATTACK

Deployment to California Follows Recent Shooting-Related Responses in Paris and Oregon

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 3, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- As details continue to emerge following the mass shooting at the Inland Regional Center in the southern California city of San Bernardino, Billy Graham Rapid Response Team chaplains have been welcomed into the community by local authorities to provide emotional and spiritual care. The first chaplains arrived yesterday afternoon, hours after the tragedy.

At this time it is being reported that there are 14 fatalities, with 17 more injured. According to the  Los Angeles Times, this is the deadliest mass-shooting in the United States since the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., nearly three years ago.

"I'm in California today, not far from San Bernardino where the mass shooting took place," said Franklin Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, on his Facebook page. "Please join me in praying right now for each one of the injured, the victims' families, and the first responders in this ongoing crisis."

Jack Munday, international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, said, "Our hearts are broken for those who lost their lives, and particularly their families, following this shooting. We're sending in a team to encourage the community, offering love, hope and support. A tragedy like this affects everybody."

The response to San Bernardino is the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team's third shooting-related deployment since October. Chaplains were on-site at  Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., on Oct. 1, and just completed an internationally-coordinated effort to Paris following the terrorist attacks there on Nov. 13.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 30, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- In the wake of widespread and deadly storms surrounding the Christmas holiday, the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team has dispatched crisis-trained chaplains to help people in Texas and Mississippi.

Jack Munday, the international director of the Rapid Response Team, said his heart goes out to all those who are suffering in the middle of the holiday season.

"It's not only the immediate devastation and grief that they're experiencing now, but happening in the Christmas season like this, we can anticipate next Christmas and the following Christmas will be triggers for the grief and the loss to come back again."

According to news reports, officials in Texas believe that up to 1,450 homes were impacted by at least nine tornadoes, including an EF-4 twister in Garland, Texas. More than 10 people have died as a result of the storms, with many more injured.

In Mississippi, 11 people were killed across four counties and more than 600 homes have been destroyed, damaged or affected, according to initial reports.

"Join me in praying especially for those who have lost loved ones and those whose homes have been destroyed," said Franklin Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, on his Facebook page. "Even in this trying time, pray that all will know: 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble' (Psalm 46:1)."

The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team is deploying in coordination with Samaritan's Purse, the Christian disaster relief organization also headed by Franklin Graham. Together the two ministries will address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those who have been affected.

BILLY GRAHAM RAPID RESPONSE TEAM SENDS INTERNATIONALLY-COORDINATED TEAM OF CHAPLAINS TO BRUSSELS FOLLOWING TERRORIST ATTACKS

Mourning the Paris terrorist attacks, where at least 129 people lost their lives.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 15, 2015 – In the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks that shocked Paris Friday night, a team of chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team is headed to France’s capital city to offer emotional and spiritual care.

At the direction of Franklin Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA), an international consortium of BGEA’s U.S., Canada and U.K. Rapid Response Teams has coordinated together to send six French-speaking, crisis-trained chaplains to offer emotional and spiritual care and support in the heart of Paris.

“Join me in praying for the French people,” Franklin Graham said, “all those injured and the loved ones of the victims of these barbaric attacks.”
Jack Munday, international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, added, “This has been reported as the worst tragedy in France since World War II. We want to encourage them, let them know we’re here to support them.”

The chaplains—who will be working directly with a church in Paris, as well as up to three other Christian organizations—are scheduled to arrive on Monday morning. This will be the first BGEA internationally-coordinated relief effort since the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

Billy Graham’s ministry in Paris included four Crusades, most recently in 1986. BGEA’s Internet Evangelism ministry has partnered with Paris-based Jesus.net since 2011.

“We’ll be there for the people on the streets, the storekeepers, the café workers to listen and provide comfort,” Munday said. “They need to know that God loves them and hasn’t forgotten them.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 21, 2016 /Christian Newswire/ -- Massive flooding inundated Texas over the weekend, with news reports indicating that several people died, more than 1,000 homes were flooded, and hundreds required emergency rescue. It is estimated that some 8.8 trillion gallons of water fell on the state in the last few days.

In the wake of this disaster, crisis-trained chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team have been deployed to assist those who lost homes and loved ones in the historic flooding.

Jack Munday, the international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, said, "Flooding is a difficult tragedy, and it's hard to recover. A homeowner basically has to throw away everything they own. Very little – if anything – can be saved. Please pray for all of those who are hurting so badly right now."

Al New, a veteran chaplain with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team who arrived in the Houston area on Tuesday, said, "Residents are dragging their possessions, carpet and furniture out to the curb right now. It's been raining so much that there's not much else you can do."

The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team is deploying in coordination with Samaritan's Purse, the Christian disaster relief organization also headed by Franklin Graham. Together the two ministries will address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those who have been affected.

In addition to the deployment in Houston, the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team continues to work in the flood-impacted areas around Orange and Deweyville, Texas, as well as in West Monroe, La. The chaplains recently completed their ministry in Bossier City, La. (flooding) and Brussels, Belgium (terrorist attacks).

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 27, 2016 /Christian Newswire/ -- Crisis-trained chaplains with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team have deployed to fire-ravaged Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, and are ministering to first responders and utility workers as they endeavor to restore critical functions in the city.

The chaplains will maintain a presence in Fort McMurray as residents begin returning to the area on June 1. Many will be seeing what is left of their homes for the first time since hastily evacuating in the face of the enormous wildfire in early May.

It is reported that the fire has now burned more than 566,000 hectares (more than 1.4 million acres) across the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Jack Munday, the international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, said, "The devastation caused by the Fort McMurray fire has resulted in more suffering than we can imagine. As the residents return, we need to pray for God's hope and comfort as they face intense grief in their loss."

Munday continued, "Our chaplains have been in the area for several days. We will continue to be there to offer emotional and spiritual care to those who have been working long, brutal days to get the city back up and running, and for those who are returning home to find that their whole world has changed."

Billy Graham Rapid Response Team chaplains from Canada and the United States are partnering in the effort. The group has deployed in coordination with Samaritan's Purse, the Christian disaster relief organization also headed by Franklin Graham. Together the two ministries will address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those who have been affected.

In addition to the work in Fort McMurray, the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team currently has chaplains in Ecuador (earthquake) and West Monroe, La. (flooding). They recently completed ministry efforts in the Houston, Texas, area (flooding).

TERROR IN NICE : BILLY GRAHAM RAPID RESPONSE TEAM CHAPLAINS RETURN TO FRANCE FOLLOWING LATEST ATTACK

CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 15, 2016 /Christian Newswire/ -- An international coalition of crisis-trained chaplains with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team are returning to France to offer emotional and spiritual care on the streets of Nice following last night's horrific terror attack.

Though the situation continues to develop and unfold, the latest news reports indicate that more than 80 people died in the violent Bastille Day attack. Dozens more were injured.

"Once again we find ourselves staring into the face of terror and evil," said Jack Munday, international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team. "We will bring a light of hope into a very dark situation, providing a ministry of presence for those who want to talk, pray, or grieve. So many need our prayers right now."

Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, used Twitter to ask for prayer following the tragedy: "Pray for France as the country grieves the loss of 84 people and many more wounded in the terror attack in #Nice."

The joint effort of the U.S., Canada and U.K. Billy Graham Rapid Response Teams includes French-speaking chaplains. It is anticipated that they will be joined by newly-trained chaplains from Paris and Brussels, cities that have also weathered terrorist attacks in recent months.

The deployment to Nice marks the seventh time in the last 10 months that the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team has sent chaplains into areas involved in mass shootings or terror attacks. Chaplains are currently ministering in Dallas following the shooting deaths of five law enforcement officers last week, and they recently completed their ministry in Orlando after the massacre of 49 people in the Pulse nightclub.

The group also responded to Brussels, Belgium (March 2016), San Bernardino, Calif. (December 2015), Paris, France (November 2015), and Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore. (October 2015).

Additionally, chaplains continue to minister in Baton Rouge, La., Brazoria County, Texas, Kanawha County, W.Va., and Greenbrier County, W.Va.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 2, 2016  /Christian Newswire/ -- The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team is sending chaplains into the area of Gatlinburg, Tenn., in an effort to help the community recover from the deadly and devastating wildfire that has consumed hundreds of buildings and claimed several lives in the popular tourist area.

News reports indicate that up to 12 lost their lives in the fire, which is being called "the worst wildfire disaster in Tennessee in a century."

"So many people are broken and hurting because of this blaze, especially those who have lost their homes and loved ones," said Jack Munday, international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team. "After meeting with local leaders and business owners, we're responding to meet the emotional and spiritual needs of all those who have been impacted by this inferno."

Additionally, Billy Graham Rapid Response Team chaplains continue to offer comfort and hope to communities affected by Hurricane Matthew, which hit the eastern United States in October.

Chaplains were also on the streets of Charlotte, N.C., this week to offer a ministry of presence and prayer during the protests following the news that Mecklenburg County District Attorney Andrew Murray would not file charges against Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Darren Vinson, who was involved in a fatal altercation with Keith Lamont Scott in September.
