Firefighters in Oklahoma are battling several grass fires across the state this Friday.

Grass Fires in Cleveland County:

Fire officials say they are battling two grass fires in Cleveland County at this time. Crews responded to the first grass fire between 120th Street, 156th Street and Cemetery Road.

A second grass fire broke out in the area of 132nd and McGuire Road.

Firefighters from Maguire, Lexington, Little Ax, Cedar Country, and Slaughterville have responded to this fire. Authorities have also blocked off Maguire Road near 120th Street.

According to Norman police, State Highway 9 has been shut down between 84th Avenue and 168th Avenue due to the fire.

Noble Emergency Management reports the fire that started at 132nd and McGuire Road is threatening 75 to 100 homes. Early reports indicate as many as 25 homes have been destroyed.

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK— It’s not the sky that’s falling, but the earth opening up in a couple of spots inBay Ridge, that has some of its residents rattled.

Mimi Carroll lives near the giant sinkhole on 79th Street that came close to swallowing a car last Wednesday.

“Thank God there wasn’t a car going down the street at the time,” she said. “So then it’s not just damage to the street, and property, it’s people.”

But the mother of all sinkholes in the neighborhood was the cave-in at 92nd Street and Third Avenue at the end of June. Workers have yet to reach the damaged portion of the sewer main 70 feet below street level. It’s expected to be weeks before the work is completed and the street reopened.

“We have to deal with keeping the hole structurally sound. We have to deal with buildings around us being shaken, and we have a lot of concerns from gas lines to electric,” said construction worker George Aragona.

A spokesperson for the Department of Environmental Protection said the two incidents are a coincidence, but that both were caused by holes in the more than 100 year old pipes. While the agency said there was no cause for alarm, Community Board 10 has been carefully logging an increased number of complaints about sinkholes, potholes and depressions.

“We have been paying closer attention to trends or to complaints that recur,” said Community Board 10’s district manager, Josephine Beckmann. “In those situations we will ask, particularly when it comes to a small sinkhole or cave-in, the DEP to make sure the sewer line or water lines are intact.”

State Senator Martin Golden said the band-aid fix is not a solution to problems caused by aging infrastructure. He’s calling for an overhaul of the area’s old water and sewer pipes, like what was done successfully in Dyker Heights a few years ago.

“If you have a real plan that goes in and takes this aging infrastructure and fixes it, you get it done,” Golden said.

Community Board 10 will host a meeting with representatives of the DEC Thursday, August 9 at 7pm to update residents on the 92nd Street emergency sewer repair project. It will be held in the Shore Hill Community room at 9000 Shore Road.

MISSISSIPPI RIVER DRIES UP AS DROUGHT WORSENS: HOW A DYING RIVER COULD HELP CRASH THE U.S. ECONOMY

Posted on August 15, 2012by The Extinction Protocol

August 15, 2012 – MIDWEST – The worst drought in more than 50 years is having a devastating impact on the Mississippi River. The Mississippi has become very thin and very narrow, and if it keeps on dropping there is a very real possibility that all river traffic could get shut down. And considering the fact that approximately 60 percent of our grain, 22 percent of our oil and natural gas, and and one-fifth of our coal travel down the Mississippi River, that would be absolutely crippling for our economy. It has been estimated that if all Mississippi River traffic was stopped that it would cost the U.S. economy 300 million dollars a day. So far most of the media coverage of this historic drought has focused on the impact that it is having on farmers and ranchers, but the health of the Mississippi River is also absolutely crucial to the economic success of this nation, and right now the Mississippi is in incredibly bad shape. In some areas the river is already 20 feet below normal and the water is expected to continue to drop. If we have another 12 months of weather ahead of us similar to what we have seen over the last 12 months then the mighty Mississippi is going to be a complete and total disaster zone by this time next year. Most Americans simply do not understand how vitally important the Mississippi River is to all of us. If the Mississippi River continues drying up to the point where commercial travel is no longer possible, it would be an absolutely devastating blow to the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, vast stretches of the Mississippi are already dangerously low. The following is an excerpt from a transcript of a CNN report that aired on August 14th. A lot of barges have been forced to go with greatly reduced loads so that they will sit higher in the river, and other commercial craft have been forced to stop operating completely. For example, the Mississippi has dropped so low at this point that the famous American Queen Steamboat can no longer safely navigate the river. Down south, the Mississippi River has gotten so low that saltwater is actually starting to move upriver. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is fighting hard to keep that contained. Other waterways in the middle part of the country are in even worse shape. For example, a 100 mile stretch of the Platte River has already dried up. Millions of fish are dying as rivers and streams all over the country continue to get shallower and warmer as a result of the ongoing drought. The last time the condition of the Mississippi River was this bad was back in 1988. At that time, a lot of barge traffic was stopped completely and the shipping industry lost approximately a billion dollars. If a similar thing were to happen now, the consequences could potentially be far worse. –ETF Daily

WHAT IS GOING ON!?! MAJOR EQ PRECURSORS IN MICHIGAN NOW...ANY GEOPHYSICISTS IN THE HOUSE???

Friday, August 17, 2012

Most are aware of all the EQ's going on in the Midwest. Southern States and the West Coast, if you don't, go here to have a look at just the last week: link to anf.ucsd.edu]
Rumors of a large EQ lurking in CA, eyewitness stories of ants moving to high ground in homes bypassing food sources (can't find the thread, any help?) and acting disoriented and birds falling from the sky, staying on the ground and acting disoriented all in Northern CA,. Mind you, not all of the quakes are showing up on USGS and (2) 5+ EQ's in CA were proven to be deleted from the site a cpl days ago.

Friday a coworker told me he witnessed the ants for himself late last week and I'll be damned if it didn't happen in our home yesterday morning! In the foyer by the front door running in circles and acting disoriented, we're in a 3rd floor apt and yes we're clean. No food source present and they just stayed there in a circle milling around and fighting.

I left work yesterday afternoon and while on the hghwy I noticed a strong sulfur smell and started to feel ill and aggitated within minutes, I live 35mi from work and I smelled it all the way home, my son works with me and was in the car,, he experienced the same. That's 35 miles folks, pretty damned large area, you can't even smell the fireworks in Detroit from a few miles out. When I arrived home and talked to my lady about it she said, "I smelled it last night, I was going to wake you",, wtf?!? She was walking our dog and heard no fireworks at all. Kobe (our pitbull) has been acting very strangely the last cpl days as well, hasn't left our side and lays either right on top or under our legs, he's definitely spooked about something. There was also a water main break at the college across the road from us, may be just coincidence but then again...

This isn't my first rodeo folks, the ants and birds=electromagnetic disturbances...large sulfur dioxide releases(sulfur smell)=volcanic activity. Michigan hasn't had a volcano in 2.5 billion years!

Helicorder from Ann Arbor(60mi away) 3 days ago, these usually have little to no activity:That's not an EQ, it's sustained movement, magma IMO.Main page, check out other areas: www.ceri.memphis.edu

USGS:Magma contains dissolved gases that are released into the atmosphere during eruptions. Gases are also released from magma that either remains below ground (for example, as an intrusion) or is rising toward the surface. In such cases, gases may escape continuously into the atmosphere from the soil, volcanic vents, fumaroles, and hydrothermal systems.
The most abundant gas typically released into the atmosphere from volcanic systems is water vapor (H2O), followed by carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2).
Couple all this with the unexplained refinery and building explosions, sinkholes, methane releases, radiation spikes around the country as high as 3000cpm's in places where it is unlikely to be caused by Fukushima, most within 3 days of an EQ in the same area suggesting large, 'naturally produced Radon' releases, and a spike in train derailments in varying locations around the country. Lot's of great info and links on it all here:

Thread: Crustal displacement appears to be happening NOW
Search 'Jumping Jack Flash Hypothesis' for a comprehensive list of explosions and other event anonalies

If I took more time I'm sure I could tie in numerous other events and anomalies that have occurred just over the last cpl weeks. There seems to be a large geological event, possibly on a continental scale, brewing right under our feet and it's ready to pop. I'd really like a qualified individual to tell me otherwise.

Any Geophysicists in the house that want to chime in here?

Anyone in the Midwest, New Madrid Areas and the West Coast, if you've experienced any significant seismic precursors recently, ants, birds, sulfur smells, EQ lights etc etc, please post them here.

(CHN)

SEATTLE (AP) — Thunderstorms and lightning threatened fire officials' plans to contain a large blaze in central Washington state as hundreds of Washington and California residents returned home to find out whether their homes were spared.

In Idaho, authorities on Saturday issued a mandatory evacuation order for some 350 homes in the area around Featherville due to thick smoke. That town and the community of Pine, both recreation getaways in the mountains 105 miles northeast of Boise, remained in the path of a 130-square-mile wildfire that has been burning for two weeks.

Fire managers were concerned that poor visibility could hamper the evacuation process, fire spokesman David Eaker said. The smoke also prevented retardant bombers from reaching the fire and aerial reconnaissance flights from locating the fire's leading edge.

"It's a very active, very dangerous fire," fire information officer Steve Till said. Crews "were prepared for it, but civilians are probably much better not being here."

The Idaho Emergency Operations Center on Saturday assigned an Idaho National Guard helicopter to fires in the southwest part of the state to be available for medical evacuations if needed. Officials said the UH-72 Lakota helicopter and seven soldiers were scheduled to be stationed in Pine as early as Monday.

The Trinity Ridge Fire burning through timber grew 15 square miles overnight. High temperatures combined with low humidity and difficult terrain made it harder for the 1,082 firefighters assigned to the blaze.

Fire spokeswoman Lisa Machnik said Saturday that three firefighters suffered ankle and knee injuries because of the rough terrain.

In Utah, evacuations were ordered for two housing developments after three separate fires were reported near the Jordanelle Reservoir east of Park City.

Wasatch County and Jordanelle Fire Department officials said evacuations were ordered Saturday for the Fox Bay Condominiums and Stillwater developments, along with Jordanelle State Park.

The three wildfires had burned a total of about 400 acres, the Deseret News reported. Multiple agencies, as well as two helicopters and four airplanes were battling the fires.

To the northwest, many residents in Washington state were returning to the south and east sides of a 35-square mile blaze near the town of Cle Elum in the Cascade Range, about 75 miles east of Seattle. That fire burned out of control for much of the week, destroying 70 residential properties and 210 other structures on the east side of the Cascades.

"People are finding a little bit of everything. Some homes were damaged, some homes were destroyed and some homes weren't even touched," Fred Slyfield, emergency management specialist for Kittitas County, Wash., said Saturday morning.

Nearly 1,000 firefighters and other personnel and eight helicopters were still building a line around the fire, which started Monday at a bridge construction project and exploded through dry grass, brush and trees. More than 400 people fled their homes. About 30 people are in local shelters, Slyfield said.

Fire danger remained high in the area, with hot, dry weather and a chance for storms and lightning expected Saturday evening.

"We're kind of on edge about that," said Mick Mueller, a spokesman at the fire command center.

Fire officials said crews are ready to respond quickly should lightning and winds trigger new fires in the area late Saturday, fire spokesman Matt Comisky said Saturday morning.

Firefighters in California made progress on some of the nearly dozen wildfires burning across that state. About 400 residents were allowed to return home in a rural area of San Diego County in the southern part of the state.

Crews also were gaining ground against a series of Northern California wildfires, but fire officials said lightning sparked more than a dozen new blazes in the area late Friday and early Saturday.

Most of the new fires were small, state fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said.

A sprinkling of rain early Saturday helped crews battling a large fire in the Plumas National Forest, about 120 miles north of Sacramento. Firefighters had that blaze 38 percent contained.

The Chips fire has consumed nearly 70 square miles and continued to threaten about 900 homes.

"We're encouraged by the progress our folks have been able to make," fire spokesman John Nichols said Saturday. "The weather last night and this morning helped the night crew get that much more done."

A storm warning was issued on Monday in Russia’s Maritime Territory as Typhoon Bolaven is approaching the region, the Emergencies Ministry said.

The severe typhoon is expected to reach the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday evening. Bolaven had wind strength of 252 kilometers per hour when it hit Okinawa, Japan, on Sunday night, which put it in the "super typhoon" category.

The ministry said heavy rains and high winds should be expected along the coast August 28-29.

Rescue services advised the residents to postpone outings, hunting or fishing expeditions.

Five people were injured in Okinawa and about 550 people had to evacuate in the wake of the typhoon. About 17,500 households in Okinawa and 58,300 homes in Kagoshima lost electricity as the storm damaged power lines.

SINKHOLE IN ISAAC HURRICANE WATCH 15-PARISH ZONE: 'START VOLUNTARY EVACUATION'

Tropical Storm Isaac heading to sinkhole disaster site and New Orleans, expected to be hurricane

Gov. Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency in Louisiana Sunday due to Tropical Storm Isaac's path moving west and he suggests that residents in low-lying parts of coastal parishes in the 15 parishes in the Hurricane Watch zone, including the home parish of the sinkhole and Orleans Parish, to start voluntary evacuation today, as Isaac is expected to turn into a strong Category 2 hurricane at landfall Wednesday.

"Today, following a meeting of the Unified Command Group, Governor Bobby Jindal held a press conference to provide an update on the state’s preparations for Tropical Storm Isaac at the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness" reports Fox News.

The governor told south Louisiana residents in fifteen parishes, including those in Assumption Parish, home of the giant sinkhole, and Orleans Parish, home of New Orleans, to gather plenty of water, non-perishabe food items, prescription medicines and whatever they may need in the event of an evacuation.

Gov. Jindal urged everyone to stay tuned to stations monitoring Isaac.

"We are calling on folks who live in low-lying areas in the fifteen parishes that are in the Hurricane Watch area to go ahead and start a voluntary evacuation.

The Mayor of Grand Isle ordered campers and tourists to evacuate Sunday and residents to evacuate Monday.

While Assumption Parish has already declared a state of emergency due to the giant sinkhole there, now Orleans, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Jefferson and St. Charles parishes each have also declared a state of emergency.
St. Charles Parish schools are closed through Wednesday.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu says he expects New Orleans residents to shelter in place but that if New Orleans is evacuated, there will be no shelter.

Gov. Jindal said that by tomorrow, there could be more mandatory evacuations.

The temperature in the waters in the Gulf of Mexico are in the mid-80s, making it more likely the storm will gather more strength when it arrives there.

"There's really nothing really between this storm and Louisiana to stop it," Jindal said.

"So it makes sense to start those plans, those preparations today, to get ahead of traffic, to get ahead of this storm."

VIETNAM : CENTRAL REGION TARGETS CONTROL OF EROSION

Last update 21/08/2012 10:16:00 SA (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge – Authorities in the central provinces of Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Ngai have given urgent priority to the growing problem of land erosion near rivers, coastal areas and mountains.

Quang Ngai has approved six projects that will cost billions of dong to move households from landslide-prone areas to resettlement sites, according to Do Ky An, the head of the province's Rural Development Office.

Under the projects, more than 375 households will be moved to six resettlement areas located in Ly Son, Nghia Hanh, Son Tinh, Tay Tra and Ba To districts.

The People's Committee is working with local agencies on four projects, which will cost VND30.6 billion (US$1.4 million), of which VND21 billion ($1 million) will be taken from the province's budget.

If the projects are completed in the third quarter of this year, 154 households would benefit.

In Thua Thien-Hue Province, local authorities will launch two projects to build embankments along the coastal area of Dong Hai near Tam Giang lagoon.

In recent years, land erosion in the area has damaged 1,200 households, causing dozens of houses to fall into the sea.

Many seabank areas in the province face a high risk of landslides along an eight-kilometre stretch of coast.

"As the flood season is coming, our villagers' houses are in danger of falling into the sea," said resident Huynh Ne of Huong Tra District's Hai Duong Commune, which is one of the areas that face the highest risk of landslides.

"We want to benefit from the province's resettlement programmes," he added.

"The provincial government has invested more than VND40 billion ($1.9 million) to move 900 households from landslides to resettlement areas," said Phan Thanh Hung, head of the province's Dyke Management and Flood and Storm Control Office.

However, another 1,000 households must be moved, said Hung, adding that the projects had been implemented slowly because the province lacked the necessary VND20 billion (US$1 million) to do so.

The province has developed new residential areas to resettle families in recent years, but local officials said they did not have the budget to build dykes.

The problem of land erosion has gained greater urgency with recent housing collapses that have killed residents and destroyed property.

According to experts, the main reasons for increasing land erosion are the over-exploitation of sand, weak dyke systems, and higher volumes of water from seas, rivers and canals.

Nam Dinh braces for floods by strengthening sea defences

Reinforcing dykes that face the sea helped the northern coastal province of Nam Dinh lessen storm damage and ensure people's safety, said the provincial Agriculture and Rural Development Department.

The province contains 91km of sea and estuary dykes and has reinforced 52km of them.

With a total investment of more than VND789 billion (US$38 million), the 5m-wide dykes running through Hai Hau, Giao Thuy and Nghia Hung districts were fortified with 20cm-thick cement blocks. The dyke belt also created a road along the sea.

Over the past two years, the province has planted about 38ha of trees along the embankment to serve as a natural fence, preventing waves from hitting the dykes.

The reinforcement initiative followed the Prime Minister's 2006 decision to invest in dyke embankment in 13 coastal provinces from Quang Ninh in the north to Quang Nam in the central region. This decision was issued after a heavy storm in 2005 damaged many dykes in Nam Dinh Province, resulting in heavy losses for local residents.

The purpose of the dyke reinforcing programme was to help the coastal provinces minimise damages caused by flood, sea water rising and salinisation.

Presently the province is carrying out seven other dyke projects worth VND868billion ($42 million).
