On Halloween night, 1968, Jack Parsons and a woman disciple conducted a black magic satanic sex ritual called "Babalon working" in a vain attempt to invoke the Antichrist and produce a "moon-child," a serpent seed offspring. Shortly afterward, Parsons was killed in what was claimed to be an accidental explosion in his home laboratory. The FBI quickly moved in and mysteriously seized all his records and notes.

However, perhaps the most famous and respected of NASA's space scientists was the late Werner von Braun. Von Braun had been a top leader in Adolph Hitler's Nazi rocket program and was brought to the U.S. after World War II. Possibly, Dr. Von Braun recognized the powers of hell that energized the space race. He is quoted once as ominously warning, "We find ourselves faced by strong powers whose base of operations is at present unknown to us."

Le bing-bang, une autre folie de nos chers scientifiques babyloniens pour nous égarer. Vous croyez vraiment que tout cet univers, si parfaitement créé est le fruit du hasard? Qu'il s'est créé tout seul, sans l'aide d'une autorité supérieure. Quand Dieu, lui-même nous parle des signes laissés dans le ciel pour la compréhension des événements mondiaux, cela aussi ne serait que pur hasard? Cette science de l'astronomie, qui a été jalousement gardée hors de la portée des humains par ses adorateurs de démons qui ont pris plaisir à pervertir la science de Dieu pour la remplacer par les fables de l'astrologie qui ont fait au cours des siècles des milliers d'adeptes égarés. Bing Bang ou création par une main supérieure? Ne tombons pas dans les nombreux pièges de ces anges-déchus qui cherchent à changer la gloire de Dieu. Tout lui appartient et tout fut créé par Lui.

10. Celles du côté de l'orient se composait de pierres de diverses couleurs; de perles et d'antimoine; celles du côté du midi étaient de pierres rouges. Leur sommet s'élevait jusqu'au ciel, comme le trône de Dieu il était d'albâtre, et dans sa partie supérieure, de saphir. Je vis aussi le feu ardent qui brûlait sur les montagnes.

11. Là aussi je vis dans une région immense le lieu où les eaux étaient rassemblées.

12. J'y vis aussi les sources de la terre cachées dans les colonnes embrasées des cieux.

13. Et dans ces colonnes du ciel, je vis des feux qui jaillissaient sans nombre, mais ni en haut ni en bas. Au-dessus de ces sources, je vis un endroit qui n'avait ni le firmament au-dessus, ni la terre au-dessous, il n'y avait pas non plus d'eau; et rien à droite ni à gauche; c'était une plage déserte.

14. Et là j'aperçus sept étoiles, brillantes comme des montagnes de feu, ou comme de sublimes esprits.

15. Alors l'ange dit: cet endroit sera jusqu'à la consommation du ciel et de la terre la prison des étoiles et des armées du ciel.

16. Ces étoiles qui roulent au-dessus du feu sont celles qui ont transgressé les commandements de Dieu, avant le fin de leur épreuve. Aussi les a-t-il enchaînées dans ce lieu. Jusqu'à ce qu'elles aient expié les crimes dans l'année mystérieuse.

Scientists using ground based observatories have discovered a dwarf planet that is believed to have the most distant orbit found beyond the known edge of our solar system. Named 2012 VP113.

"The discovery of 2012 VP113 shows us that the outer reaches of our solar system are not an empty wasteland as once was thought," said Trujillo, lead author and astronomer. "Instead, this is just the tip of the iceberg telling us that there are many inner Oort Cloud bodies awaiting discovery. It also illustrates how little we know about the most distant parts of our solar system and how much there is left to explore."

Our known solar system consists of the rocky planets like Earth, which are close to the sun; the gas giant planets, which are further out; and the frozen objects of the Kuiper belt, which lie just beyond Neptune's orbit. Beyond this, there appears to be an edge to the solar system where only one object somewhat smaller than Pluto, Sedna, was previously known to inhabit for its entire orbit. But the newly found 2012 VP113 has an orbit that stays even beyond Sedna, making it the furthest known in the solar system. Sheppard and Trujillo determine that about 900 objects with orbits like Sedna and 2012 VP113 with sizes larger than 621 miles (1000 km) may exist. 2012 VP113 is likely one of hundreds of thousands of distant objects that inhabit the region in our solar system scientists refer to as the inner Oort cloud. The total population of the inner Oort cloud is likely bigger than that of the Kuiper Belt and main asteroid belt. "Some of these inner Oort cloud objects could rival the size of Mars or even Earth," said Sheppard.

This is because many of the inner Oort cloud objects are so distant that even very large ones would be too faint to detect with current technology." Both Sedna and 2012 VP113 were found near their closest approach to the sun, but they both have orbits that go out to hundreds of AU, at which point they would be too faint to discover. The similarity in the orbits found for Sedna, 2012 VP113 and a few other objects near the edge of the Kuiper Belt suggests the new object's orbit might be influenced by the potential presence of a yet unseen planet perhaps up to 10 times the size of Earth. 2012 VP113 - The time of one revolution around the Sun is 4590 years

UNE PLANETE GEANTE SE CACHE-T-ELLE DANS LE SYSTEME SOLAIRE?

Une planète géante, jusqu'ici jamais détectée par les astronomes, serait-elle dissimulée aux confins de notre système solaire ? C'est en tout cas ce que suggèrent des travaux publiés par deux astronomes dans la revue Nature.

Une gigantesque planète, quelque 10 fois plus grosse que la Terre, se cacherait-elle à l’extrême limite de notre système solaire ? Une planète dont aucun télescope n'aurait jusqu'ici détecté la présence ? De prime abord, une telle éventualité peut surprendre, surtout au vu du nombre considérable de planètes bien plus éloignées qui ont été découvertes au cours de ces dernières années, notamment grâce au télescope spatial Kepler.

Et pourtant, c'est bel et bien ce que suggère un article publié le 27 mars 2014 dans la revue Nature, sous le titre « A Sedna-like body with a perihelion of 80 astronomical units ».

Quel est le contenu de cet article ? À première vue, il n'est pas question de planète « fantôme », dissimulée au sein de notre système solaire. En effet, les astronomes Chad Trujillo (Observatoire Gemini, Hawaï) et Scott Sheppard (Carnegie Institution for Science à Washington, Etats-Unis), co-auteurs de cette étude, relatent « simplement » la découverte
d'une planète naine appelée 2012  VP113, située aux confins de notre système solaire. Cette plan
ète naine gravite sur l’orbite solaire la plus lointaine que nous connaissons, puisque la distance qui sépare 2012  VP113 du Soleil n'est jamais inférieure à 80 Unités Astronomiques (une Unité Astronomique correspond à la distance qui sépare la Terre du Soleil, soit 149.5 millions de kilomètres), ce qui correspond en d’autres termes à une distance de 12 000 milliards de kilomètres.


En quoi la découverte
de 2012  VP113 - une découverte au demeurant très loin d'être mineure ! - suggèrerait-t-elle l'existence d'une plan
ète beaucoup plus grande, dissimulée au sein de notre système solaire, et qu'aucun télescope ne serait jusqu'ici parvenu à détecter ? La réponse se situe dans l'orbite de 2012  VP113 : en étudiant les caractéristiques de cette orbite puis en la comparant à celle d’autres corps précédemment découverts, les deux auteurs de l’étude ont été amenés à formuler l'hypothèse qu'un corps extrêmement massif se situerait encore au-delà de l’orbite de 2012  VP113, dont la présence influerait sur l’orbite de ce corps nouvellement découvert…


Pour comprendre parfaitement ce dont il s'agit, intéressons-nous plus précisément à cet article publié dans Nature le 27 mars 2014, relatif à la détection de 2012  VP113. Dans cet article, nous y apprenons que 2012  VP113 est situé au-delà de la Ceinture de Kuiper, cette zone du système solaire distante du Soleil de quelques 30 à 50 Unités Astronomiques (30 à 50 fois la distance Terre-Soleil), constituée de milliers de corps célestes glacés.

Or, une telle localisation est loin d’être anodine. En effet jusqu’ici, une seule autre planète naine avait été découverte
au-delà de la Ceinture de Kuiper : il s’agit de Sedna, un corps découvert en 2003, d’un diamètre de 1000 km, et dont la distance qui la sépare du Soleil n’est jamais inférieure à 76 Unités Astronomiques.


Et c'est précisément en comparant l'orbite de 2012  VP113 à celle de Sedna que Chad Trujillo et Scott Sheppard en sont venus àformuler l'hypothèse que les caractéristiques de ces deux orbites, qui présentent certaines similarités, pourraient s'expliquer par la présence d’un très gros corps céleste, dont la taille pourrait être jusqu’à 10 fois supérieure à celle de la Terre, et qui serait situé à l'extrémité de notre système solaire, encore plus loin du Soleil que ne le sont Sedna et 2012  VP113. Selon les auteurs de l’étude, cette planète très massive pourrait être située à quelques 250 Unités Astronomiques du Soleil.

En réalité, cette hypothèse n'est pas complètement neuve : il s'agit ni plus ni moins de la théorie de la planète X. La théorie de la planète X ? Apparue dès le 19e siècle à la  suite de la découverte
de Neptune en 1846, cette théorie postule qu'il existerait au sein de notre système solaire, au-delà de l’orbite de Neptune, une planète pour l’instant invisible. Une hypothèse qui n’a jusqu’ici jamais été confirmée par la moindre observation.


En 2010 et 2011, le télescope WISE  de la NASA a même scruté la région de l’espace où cette hypothétique planète serait censée se trouver. Mais ces observations sont demeurées vaines.

Mais alors, comment expliquer que des scientifiques avancent encore une fois l’hypothèse qu’une planète massive se trouve aux confins du système solaire, alors que les observations du télescope WISE n’ont fourni aucun résultat ? Selon Chad Trujillo et Scott Sheppard, c’est parce que cette planète serait, si elle existe, beaucoup trop froide pour pouvoir être détectée par un instrument tel que le télescope WISE, du fait de la très grande distance qui la sépare du Soleil.
 
La découverte
de 2012  VP113 va-t-elle relancer la traque de la planète X ? S'il est encore trop tôt pour le dire, cette découverte
montre en revanche que les confins du système solaire sont encore extrêmement mal connus des astronomes (les scientifiques pensent par exemple que des corps comme 2012  VP113 ou Sedna sont en réalité extrêmement nombreux, mais n'ont pas encore été détectés)...

A group of scientists led by researchers from the University of Rochester and North Carolina State University have for the first time sent a message using a beam of neutrinos – nearly massless particles that travel at almost the speed of light. The message was sent through 240 meters of stone and said simply, "Neutrino."

"Using neutrinos, it would be possible to communicate between any two points on Earth without using satellites or cables," said Dan Stancil, professor of electrical and computer engineering at NC State and lead author of a paper describing the research. "Neutrino communication systems would be much more complicated than today's systems, but may have important strategic uses."

Many have theorized about the possible uses of neutrinos in communication because of one particularly valuable property: they can penetrate almost anything they encounter. If this technology could be applied to submarines, for instance, then they could conceivably communicate over long distances through water, which is difficult, if not impossible, with present technology. And if we wanted to communicate with something in outer space that was on the far side of a moon or a planet, our message could travel straight through without impediment.

"Of course, our current technology takes massive amounts of high-tech equipment to communicate a message using neutrinos, so this isn't practical now," said Kevin McFarland, a University of Rochester physics professor who was involved in the experiment. "But the first step toward someday using neutrinos for communication in a practical application is a demonstration using today's technology."

The team of scientists that demonstrated that it was possible performed their test at the Fermi National Accelerator Lab (or Fermilab, for short), outside of Chicago. The group has submitted its findings to the journal Modern Physics Letters A.

At Fermilab the researchers had access to two crucial components. The first is one of the world's most powerful particle accelerators, which creates high-intensity beams of neutrinos by accelerating protons around a 2.5-mile-circumference track and then colliding them with a carbon target. The second is a multi-ton detector called MINERvA, located in a cavern 100 meters underground.

The fact that such a substantial setup is necessary to communicate using neutrinos means that much work will need to be done before the technology can be incorporated into a readily usable form.

The communication test was done during a two-hour period when the accelerator was running at half its full intensity due to an upcoming scheduled downtime. Regular MINERvA interaction data was collected at the same time the communication test was being carried out.

Today, most communication is carried out by sending and receiving electromagnetic waves. That is how our radios, cell phones, and televisions operate. But electromagnetic waves don't pass easily through most types of matter. They get blocked by water and mountains and many other liquids and solids. Neutrinos, on the other hand, regularly pass through entire planets without being disturbed. Because of their neutral electric charge and almost non-existent mass, neutrinos are not subject to magnetic attractions and are not significantly altered by gravity, so they are virtually free of impediments to their motion.

The message that the scientists sent using neutrinos was translated into binary code. In other words, the word "neutrino" was represented by a series of 1's and 0's, with the 1's corresponding to a group of neutrinos being fired and the 0's corresponding to no neutrinos being fired. The neutrinos were fired in large groups because they are so evasive that even with a multi-ton detector, only about one in ten billion neutrinos are detected. After the neutrinos were detected, a computer on the other end translated the binary code back into English, and the word "neutrino" was successfully received.

"Neutrinos have been an amazing tool to help us learn about the workings of both the nucleus and the universe," said Deborah Harris, Minerva project manager, "but neutrino communication has a long way to go before it will be as effective."

Minerva is an international collaboration of nuclear and particle physicists from 21 institutions that study neutrino behavior using a detector located at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago. This is the first neutrino experiment in the world to use a high-intensity beam to study neutrino reactions with nuclei of five different target materials, creating the first side-by-side comparison of interactions. This will help complete the picture of neutrinos and allow data to be more clearly interpreted in current and future experiments.

At the January 2014 meeting of the American Astronomical Society, researchers revealed a patch of sky seen through a lens more than 500,000 light years wide. The "lens" is actually a massive cluster of galaxies known as Abell 2744. A new ScienceCast video peers through the biggest telescope in the history of astronomy.

More than 400 years ago, Galileo turned a primitive spyglass toward the sky, and in just a few nights learned more about the unseen heavens than all of the scientists and philosophers before him, combined.

Since then astronomers have been guided by a simple imperative: Make Bigger Telescopes. As the 21st century unfolds, the power of optics has grown a million-fold. Telescopes cap the highest mountains, sprawl across deserts, fill valleys and even fly through space. These modern giants provide crystal-clear views of stars and galaxies billions of light years farther away than anything Galileo ever saw, each breakthrough in size bringing a new and deeper understanding of the cosmos.

It makes you wonder, how big can a telescope get?

Would you believe, bigger than an entire galaxy? At the January 2014 meeting of the American Astronomical Society, researchers revealed a patch of sky seen through a lens more than 500,000 light years wide.

The "lens" is actually a massive cluster of galaxies known as Abell 2744. As predicted by Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, the mass of the cluster warps the fabric of space around it. Starlight passing by is bent and magnified, much like an ordinary lens except on a vastly larger scale.

Lately, the Hubble Space Telescope, along with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, has been looking through this gravitational lens as part of a program called "Frontier Fields."

"Frontier Fields is an experiment to explore the first billion years of the Universe's history," says Matt Mountain from the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. The question is, "Can we use Hubble's exquisite image quality and Einstein's theory of general relativity to search for the first galaxies?"

The answer seems to be "yes." At the AAS meeting, an international team led by astronomers from the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias and La Laguna University discussed Hubble and Spitzer observations of the Abell 2744 cluster.

Among the results was the discovery of one of the most distant galaxies ever seen-a star system 30 times smaller yet 10 times more active than our own Milky Way. Bursting with newborn stars, the firebrand is giving astronomers a rare glimpse of a galaxy born not long after the Big Bang itself.

Overall, the Hubble exposure of Abell2744 revealed almost 3,000 distant galaxies magnified as much as 10 to 20 times larger than they would normally appear. Without the boost of gravitational lensing, almost all of those background galaxies would be invisible.

Abell 2744 is just the beginning. Frontier Fields is targeting six galaxy clusters as gravitational lenses. Together, they form an array of mighty telescopes capable of probing the heavens as never before.

Russia is planning to launch another Glonass-M navigation satellite into orbit on March 24, the Defense Ministry said Wednesday. Glonass is Russia's answer to the US Global Positioning System, or GPS, and is designed for both military and civilian uses.

"March 24 has been determined as the most optimal date for Glonass-M launch," said Col. Alexei Zolotukhin, a spokesman for Aerospace Defense Forces.

Zolotukhin said the satellite will be launched from the Plesetsk space center in northern Russia on board the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket.

The new Glonass-M will augment a group of 28 Glonass satellites already in orbit. Twenty-four satellites are currently in operation, while three are spares and one is in test-flight phase.

The Glonass system requires at least 18 operational satellites for continuous navigation services across the whole of Russia and 24 satellites to provide navigation services worldwide.

By 2020, Russia plans to have 30 Glonass-M and new-generation Glonass-K satellites in orbit, including six in reserve, space officials have said.

Gen. William Shelton, the commander of Air Force Space Command, highlighted a successful satellite launch to the House Armed Services Committee's subcommittee on strategic forces during a budget hearing for national security space activities here, April 3.

"Just this morning, we had a very successful Defense Meteorological Satellite Program launch out of Vandenberg Air Force Base, (Calif.), on an Atlas V," Shelton said.

DMSP is the primary provider of terrestrial and space weather information for the U.S. military. DMSP satellites carry sensors vital to weather prediction and space weather forecasting. DMSP sensors provide visible, infrared, microwave and space weather data to enhance information available to the warfighter.

Shelton was joined by Gil Klinger, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for space and intelligence; Douglas Loverro, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for space policy; Lt. Gen. John Raymond, the 14th Air Force commander and the Joint Functional Component Command for Space, U.S. Strategic Command; and Betty Sapp, National Reconnaissance Office director. All parties agreed stable funding of space programs is critical to maintaining an advantage in the space arena.

"Our nation's advantage in space is no longer a given," Shelton said. "The ever-evolving space environment is increasingly contested as potential adversary capabilities grow in number and sophistication."

Changes to the space environment have caused changes to policies and practices within the Department of Defense and the Air Force.

"The evolving strategic environment increasingly challenges U.S. space advantages," Loverro explained. "Space is no longer the sole province of world powers. It is a frontier that is now open to all. In the last several decades, space has become more competitive, more congested and more contested. What worries me the most is the contested nature of space, which we now face."

He stressed the importance of space, not only to those on American soil, but to the warfighters of partner nations.

"It underpins DOD capabilities worldwide," he said. "It enables U.S. global operations to be executed with precision, on a worldwide basis, with reduced resources, fewer deployed troops, lower casualties, and decreased collateral damage. Space empowers both our forces and those of our allies to win faster, and bring more of our warfighters home safely."

Satellite launches, like the one at Vandenberg AFB, and units like Joint Forces Component Command for Space, provide the various capabilities necessary to maintain space superiority now, and in the future, officials said.

"To meet the demands of the dynamic space environment, my command is focused on three operational objectives: Providing timely warning and assessment, supporting national users and joint and coalition forces, and protecting and defending our space capabilities," Raymond said.

"JFCC Space is and will continue to be the world's premier provider of space capabilities, even as it faces constantly evolving operating and threat environments. I am confident that the men and women of JFCC Space are prepared to meet these challenges with a spirit of dedicated innovation and devotion to duty, providing the warfighter assured access to the world's premier space capabilities."

DOD and AF leaders agree the key to a successful space program, and an enduring advantage in space is innovation, as well as the appropriate budget to accomplish mission requirements.

"Providing budget stability and flexibility in this very dynamic strategic environment is necessary to maintain and bolster the viability of our nation's space capabilities," Shelton said.

"Given this new 'normal' in space, I believe we are at a strategic crossroad. I believe it is a reality that requires us to address how we protect our space systems, challenge traditional acquisition practices and consider alternative space architectures that are more resilient and affordable."

Scientists at Europe's particle physics laboratory CERN say they're considering a successor to the world's largest, most powerful and expensive atom smasher.

The next-generation particle accelerator would be four times the size of CERN's current Large Hadron Collider, USA Today reported Wednesday.

The LHC was built in a circular, 15-mile underground tunnel under the Swiss/French border near Geneva at a cost of $5.6 billion. The proposed new atom smasher would live in a similar underground home, but this one would be 40 to 55 miles in circumference.

"Particle physics takes the long-term view," a CERN statement said. "Even though the LHC program is already well defined for the next two decades, the time has come to look even further ahead."

CERN has started a five-year exploratory study called the Future Circular Colliders Program focusing on the next-generation circular collider.

"We need to sow the seeds of tomorrow's technologies today, so that we are ready to take decisions in a few years' time," Frederick Bordry, CERN's director for accelerators and technology, said in a statement.

ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen's mission next year to the International Space Station now has a name: iriss. The winning proposal was submitted by Filippo Magni, from Italy, and was selected from over 700 suggestions received from across Europe.

The name for Andreas' 10-day mission combines Iris and ISS. Iris was a Greek goddess, the messenger of the gods of Olympus and the personification of the rainbow. As messenger, she represents the link between humanity and the cosmos, and between the heavens and Earth.

The name also combines the rainbow - A SYMBOL OF PEACE - with Andreas' scientific and technology demonstration mission to the Space Station.

The winning name was announced by Andreas yesterday in Copenhagen at the Science Forum, part of the Danish national science fair.

Space science fosters understanding

Andreas talked about his mission before an audience of almost 1100, and announced a new Danish national competition to design his mission logo.


"It was great to be able to make the announcement at an event where so many young students enthusiastic about science could participate," he said.

"Science has been a bridge between East and West, helping to foster PEACE and UNDERSTANDING. The name iriss perfectly captures this aspect of the ISS."

His time on the Space Station will focus on testing and demonstrating new technologies such as ESA's Skinsuit, which aims to alleviate backpain.

Andreas is an engineer by education who worked on ESA projects such as Swarm and lunar missions before becoming an astronaut in 2009.

ISS: outstanding example of international cooperation

Filippo Magni is a 20-year-old student of aerospace engineering at Politecnico di Milano. He's always been passionate about space and, as a child, was fascinated by the gorgeous pictures coming from interplanetary missions and the Hubble Space Telescope.


"The rainbow is a universal symbol of PEACE and I like to think of the ISS as a rare and outstanding example of PEACE and INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION," says Filippo.

"The figure of Iris the messenger matches the role of the astronauts who have the task of transmitting their special experience in orbit to those who remain here on Earth."

The winning name was selected from among many hundreds of excellent submissions in a Europe-wide contest announced by ESA in March. As winner, Filippo will receive a framed mission logo signed by Andreas.

17 fois plus rapide qu'un coup de fusil

Ce gigantesque astéroïde a été découvert le 23 avril par la NASA. Il se déplace à une vitesse estimée à 14 km par seconde ou 17 fois plus rapide qu'un coup de fusil.

D'après le site Space.com, si "The Beast" arrive sur la Terre (chose impossible donc), son énergie libérée sera comparable aux mégatonnes d'une bombe à hydrogène.

China plans to complete the development of its national navigation satellite system BeiDou ahead of schedule - by 2017, and not in 2020 as it was previously announced, the Central Research Machine building Institute of the Russian Space Agency said Tuesday.

As far as Russian satellite navigation is concerned, a second GLONASS K1 satellite will be launched before the end of this year, and the first satellite of the K2 generation, aimed for the transmission of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) signals, is now in the production phase.

Meanwhile, American GPS and European Galileo navigation systems still experience delays in launch and modernization, researchers say.

The launch of the first American GPS III satellite will not occur until 2016, while the completion of the next-generation operational control segment (OCX) is now slated for 2017, a couple of years later than originally planned.

The earliest launches of Galileo satellites are to be expected in August, November and December this year. In all, Galileo, which was elaborated by the EU and European Space Agency, should embark 30 satellites by 2016.

China launched its regional positioning BeiDou system in 2012. It requires 35 satellites in total.

BeiDou frequency bands do not correlate with those of American and French systems.


Therefore, China foresees good prospects for cooperation with Russia's GLONASS on regional support and chipsets development, which actually means working on mutual navigation compatibility.

Russia expects an agreement with China, which will allow the countries to build three ground operational stations on each other's territories, for GLONASS needs to place satellites on three orbits, as every single satellite has its own frequency. At the moment the system includes 24 operating satellites and four more on standby.

At the same time Russia has suspended the operation of all 11 GPS stations on its territory since June 1 due to poor progress in Russia-US talks over the construction of Russian ground stations in the United States.

This is a disadvantage for the Pentagon GPS, for some billion people around the world are using the system and it requires 24 single-frequency satellites in six orbits.

It's been a fruitful year for CERN. In his end-of-year message to everyone at CERN, Director-General Rolf Heuer writes:

"[This year] has shown how decades of diligent groundwork, a hallmark of CERN and particle physics, along with a deep-seated sense of the values of the organization, lay the foundations for success."



This success has come in 2013 in many forms.

The Large Hadron Colllider (LHC) came to the end of its highly successful first three-year run in February, giving way to a busy programme of maintenance and consolidation of CERN's entire accelerator chain that will enable the LHC to restart at higher energies in 2015. CERN’s experimental teams have continued to analyse data during this period, and many of them have embarked on upgrades of their own.

The LHC experiments ATLAS and CMS confirmed in March that the new boson found in 2012 is indeed a Higgs boson and continued to probe its properties. ALICE took data from lead-proton collisions and continued its steady programme of upgrade and consolidation work. LHCb observed a new matter-antimatter asymmety in the decays of the B0s meson and measured one of the rarest processes in physics. After reaching the remarkable figure of 100 petabytes of stored data early in the year, CERN’s computing capacity was expanded significantly with an extension to the Data Centre at CERN as well as the establishment of a new data centre in Budapest, Hungary – ready to deal with the torrent of data to come when the LHC starts up again.

The year was busy for the rich research programme beyond the LHC. Teams at ISOLDE showed that atomic nuclei can be pear shaped and measured the ionization potential of the rarest element on Earth; antiproton experiments made world-beating measurements on the antiproton and looked at the effects of gravity on antimatter and the CLOUD collaboration shed new light on the effect of cosmic rays on the formation of clouds in the atmosphere.

The laboratory hosted its first ever TEDxCERN event, and opened the local tourist trail "Passport to the Big Bang". Some 70,000 people visited in September for the Open Days, which provided a rare opportunity for many to see the LHC underground. A collection of CERN photographs were put under a creative commons licence and CERN celebrated 20 years of putting World Wide Web software in the public domain by restoring the first website to its original URL [here] and recreating the world's first widely available web browser, the line-mode browser.

CERN continued to strengthen ties around the world. Israel is to become CERN’s 21st Member State – the first new member since 1999 – and Ukraine is set to join as an Associate Member. For the future, the programme to upgrade the LHC to deliver more collisions was recognized as the top priority in the updated European Strategy for Particle Physics, approved by CERN Council in May.

Finally, the year 2013 saw a number of prestigious awards. In October, Peter Higgs and François Englert shared the Nobel prize in physics for "the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider.” Other prizes for the laboratory included the Prince of Asturias award, the UNESCO Niels Bohr gold medal, and the Edinburgh medal awarded to CERN and to Peter Higgs.

NEAR MISS : THE SOLAR SUPERSTORM OF JULY 2012


July 23, 2014: If an asteroid big enough to knock modern civilization back to the 18th century appeared out of deep space and buzzed the Earth-Moon system, the near-miss would be instant worldwide headline news.


Two years ago, Earth experienced a close shave just as perilous, but most newspapers didn't mention it. The "impactor" was an extreme solar storm, the most powerful in as much as 150+ years.

"If it had hit, we would still be picking up the pieces," says Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado.

Baker, along with colleagues from NASA and other universities, published a seminal study of the storm in the December 2013 issue of the journal Space Weather.  Their paper, entitled "A major solar eruptive event in July 2012," describes how a powerful coronal mass ejection (CME) tore through Earth orbit on July 23, 2012.  Fortunately Earth wasn't there.  Instead, the storm cloud hit the STEREO-A spacecraft.

"I have come away from our recent studies more convinced than ever that Earth and its inhabitants were incredibly fortunate that the 2012 eruption happened when it did," says Baker.  "If the eruption had occurred only one week earlier, Earth would have been in the line of fire.

Extreme solar storms pose a threat to all forms of high-technology.  They begin with an explosion--a "solar flare"—in the magnetic canopy of a sunspot.  X-rays and extreme UV radiation reach Earth at light speed, ionizing the upper layers of our atmosphere; side-effects of this "solar EMP" include radio blackouts and GPS navigation errors. Minutes to hours later, the energetic particles arrive.  Moving only slightly slower than light itself, electrons and protons accelerated by the blast can electrify satellites and damage their electronics. Then come the CMEs, billion-ton clouds of magnetized plasma that take a day or more to cross the Sun-Earth divide.  Analysts believe that a direct hit by an extreme CME such as the one that missed Earth in July 2012 could cause widespread power blackouts, disabling everything that plugs into a wall socket.  Most people wouldn't even be able to flush their toilet because urban water supplies largely rely on electric pumps. 

Before July 2012, when researchers talked about extreme solar storms their touchstone was the iconic Carrington Event of Sept. 1859, named after English astronomer Richard Carrington who actually saw the instigating flare with his own eyes.  In the days that followed his observation, a series of powerful CMEs hit Earth head-on with a potency not felt before or since.  Intense geomagnetic storms ignited Northern Lights as far south as Cuba and caused global telegraph lines to spark, setting fire to some telegraph offices and thus disabling the 'Victorian Internet."

A similar storm today could have a catastrophic effect. According to a study by the National Academy of Sciences, the total economic impact could exceed $2 trillion or 20 times greater than the costs of a Hurricane Katrina. Multi-ton transformers damaged by such a storm might take years to repair.

"In my view the July 2012 storm was in all respects at least as strong as the 1859 Carrington event," says Baker. "The only difference is, it missed."

In February 2014, physicist Pete Riley of Predictive Science Inc. published a paper in Space Weather entitled "On the probability of occurrence of extreme space weather events."  In it, he analyzed records of solar storms going back 50+ years.  By extrapolating the frequency of ordinary storms to the extreme, he calculated the odds that a Carrington-class storm would hit Earth in the next ten years.

The answer: 12%.

"Initially, I was quite surprised that the odds were so high, but the statistics appear to be correct," says Riley.  "It is a sobering figure."

In his study, Riley looked carefully at a parameter called Dst, short for "disturbance – storm time." This is a number calculated from magnetometer readings around the equator. Essentially, it measures how hard Earth's magnetic field shakes when a CME hits. The more negative Dst becomes, the worse the storm.  Ordinary geomagnetic storms, which produce Northern Lights around the Arctic Circle, but otherwise do no harm, register Dst=-50 nT (nanoTesla).  The worst geomagnetic storm of the Space Age, which knocked out power across Quebec in March 1989, registered Dst=-600 nT. Modern estimates of Dst for the Carrington Event itself range from -800 nT to a staggering -1750 nT.


In their Dec. 2013 paper, Baker et al. estimated Dst for the July 2012 storm. "If that CME had hit Earth, the resulting geomagnetic storm would have registered a Dst of -1200, comparable to the Carrington Event and twice as bad as the March 1989 Quebec blackout."

The reason researchers know so much about the July 2012 storm is because, out of all the spacecraft in the solar system it could have hit, it did hit a solar observatory.  STEREO-A is almost ideally equipped to measure the parameters of such an event.

"The rich data set obtained by STEREO far exceeded the relatively meagre observations that Carrington was able to make in the 19th century," notes Riley.  "Thanks to STEREO-A we know a lot of about the magnetic structure of the CME, the kind of shock waves and energetic particles it produced, and perhaps most importantly of all, the number of CMEs that preceded it."

It turns out that the active region responsible for producing the July 2012 storm didn't launch just one CME into space, but many.  Some of those CMEs "plowed the road" for the superstorm.

A paperin the March 2014 edition of Nature Communications by UC Berkeley space physicist Janet G. Luhmann and former postdoc Ying D. Liu describes the process: The July 23rd CME was actually two CMEs separated by only 10 to 15 minutes. This double-CME traveled through a region of space that had been cleared out by yet another CME four days earlier. As a result, the storm clouds were not decelerated as much as usual by their transit through the interplanetary medium.


"It's likely that the Carrington event was also associated with multiple eruptions, and this may turn out to be a key requirement for extreme events," notes Riley. "In fact, it seems that extreme events may require an ideal combination of a number of key features to produce the 'perfect solar storm.'"

"Pre-conditioning by multiple CMEs appears to be very important," agrees Baker.

A common question about this event is, how did the STEREO-A probe survive?  After all, Carrington-class storms are supposed to be mortally dangerous to spacecraft and satellites. Yet STEREO-A not only rode out the storm, but also continued taking high-quality data throughout.


"Spacecraft such as the STEREO twins and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (a joint ESA/NASA mission) were designed to operate in the environment outside the Earth's magnetosphere, and that includes even quite intense, CME-related shocks," says Joe Gurman, the STEREO project scientist at the Goddard Space Flight Center.  "To my knowledge, nothing serious happened to the spacecraft."

The story might have been different, he says, if STEREO-A were orbiting Earth instead of traveling through interplanetary space.

"Inside Earth's magnetosphere, strong electric currents can be generated by a CME strike," he explains. "Out in interplanetary space, however, the ambient magnetic field is much weaker and so those dangerous currents are missing."  In short, STEREO-A was in a good place to ride out the storm.

"Without the kind of coverage afforded by the STEREO mission, we as a society might have been blissfully ignorant of this remarkable solar storm," notes Baker. "How many others of this scale have just happened to miss Earth and our space detection systems? This is a pressing question that needs answers."


If Riley's work holds true, there is a 12% chance we will learn a lot more about extreme solar storms in the next 10 years—when one actually strikes Earth.

Says Baker, "we need to be prepared."

August 6, 2014:  Today, after a decade-long journey chasing its target, the European Space Agency's Rosetta probe, carrying three NASA instruments, became the first spacecraft to rendez vous with a comet, 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

"After 10 years, five months and four days travelling towards our destination, looping around the sun five times and clocking up 6.4 billion kilometers, we are delighted to announce finally we are here," said Jean-Jacques Dordain, ESA's director General.

Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and Rosetta are 252 million miles (405 million kilometers) from Earth, about halfway between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars. The comet is in an elliptical, 6.5-year orbit that takes it from beyond Jupiter at its farthest point, to between the orbits of Mars and Earth at its closest to the sun. Rosetta will accompany the comet for over a year as it swings around the sun and back out towards Jupiter again.

Rosetta is 62 miles (100 kilometers) from the comet's surface. Over the next six weeks, it will fly two triangular-shaped trajectories in front of the comet, first at the 62-mile (100-kilometer) altitude and then down at 31 miles (50 kilometers). At the same time, the spacecraft's suite of instruments will provide a detailed scientific study of the comet, scanning the surface to identify a target site for its comet lander, Philae.

Eventually, Rosetta will attempt a close, near-circular orbit at 19 miles (30 kilometers) and, depending on the activity of the comet, may come even closer.


"Over the next few months, in addition to characterizing the comet nucleus and setting the bar for the rest of the mission, we will begin final preparations for another space history first: landing on a comet," said Matt Taylor, Rosetta's project scientist from the European Space Agency's Science and Technology Centre in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

As many as five possible landing sites will be identified by late August, before the primary site is identified in mid-September. The final timeline for the sequence of events for deploying Philae -- currently expected for Nov. 11 -- will be confirmed by the middle of October.

Comets are considered to be primitive building blocks of the solar system and may have helped to "seed" Earth with water, perhaps even the ingredients for life. But many fundamental questions about these enigmatic objects remain, and through a comprehensive, in situ study of the comet, Rosetta aims to unlock the secrets within.

The three U.S. instruments aboard the spacecraft are the Microwave Instrument for Rosetta Orbiter (MIRO), an ultraviolet spectrometer called Alice, and the Ion and Electron Sensor (IES). They are part of a suite of 11 science instruments aboard the Rosetta orbiter.
MIRO is designed to provide data on how gas and dust leave the surface of the nucleus to form the coma and tail that give comets their intrinsic beauty. Studying the surface temperature and evolution of the coma and tail provides information on how the comet evolves as it approaches and leaves the vicinity of the sun.

Alice will analyze gases in the comet's coma, which is the bright envelope of gas around the nucleus of the comet developed as it approaches the sun. Alice also will measure the rate at which the comet produces water, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. These measurements will provide valuable information about the surface composition of the nucleus.

The instrument also will measure the amount of argon present, an important clue about the temperature of the solar system at the time the comet's nucleus originally formed more than 4.6 billion years ago.

IES is part of a suite of five instruments to analyze the plasma environment of the comet, particularly the coma. The instrument will measure the charged particles in the sun's outer atmosphere, or solar wind, as they interact with the gas flowing out from the comet while Rosetta is drawing nearer to the comet's nucleus.

NASA also provided part of the electronics package for the Double Focusing Mass Spectrometer, which is part of the Swiss-built Rosetta Orbiter Spectrometer for Ion and Neutral Analysis (ROSINA) instrument. ROSINA will be the first instrument in space with sufficient resolution to be able to distinguish between molecular nitrogen and carbon monoxide, two molecules with approximately the same mass. Clear identification of nitrogen will help scientists understand conditions at the time the solar system was formed.

U.S. scientists are partnering on several non-U.S. instruments and are involved in seven of the mission's 21 instrument collaborations. NASA's Deep Space Network is supporting ESA's Ground Station Network for spacecraft tracking and navigation.

Launched in March 2004, Rosetta was reactivated in January 2014 after a record 957 days in hibernation. Composed of an orbiter and lander, Rosetta's objectives upon arrival at comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in August are to study the celestial object up close in unprecedented detail, prepare for landing a probe on the comet's nucleus in November, and track its changes as it sweeps past the sun.

Mars One is a nonprofit that has plans to put humans on Mars by 2025, but doctoral students at MIT believe the current plans could put the colonists at risk of starving to death.

The students used public information to simulate the mission and found that under the current plan, which calls for growing crops inside, it will be difficult to grow enough food for the colony while maintaining safe oxygen levels.

"Our habitation simulations revealed that crop growth, if large enough to provide 100% of the settlement's food, will produce unsafe oxygen levels in the habitat. As a result, some form of oxygen removal system is required -- a technology that has not yet been developed for spaceflight," the study says.

Over 200,000 people applied to be part of the one-way mission to Mars, but only 25 to 40 people will be chosen for the mission. The organization plans to produce a reality TV show that will document the lives of the first people to ever go to the planet. They plan to launch an unmanned mission to the planet, in collaboration with Lockheed Martin, by 2017.

La NASA confirme que les 3 jours d’obscurité auront lieu cette année en les jours 21, 22 et 23 décembre. La terre restera durant ces 3 jours sans soleil, de nuit c’est à dire dans l’obscurité totale à cause d’une tempête solaire....

C’est le chef de la NASA Charles Bolden qui en a fait l’annonce et demande à tout le monde de garder leur calme. Ce phénomène sera le produit d’une tempête solaire, la plus grande durant les 50 dernières années pour une période de 72 heures.  A noter que dans les réponses des Êtres de Lumière aux questions posées à Monique Mathieu par des membres de son association “Du Ciel à la Terre”, elle a écrit: ”Les trois jours de nuit auront effectivement lieu. Ce sera un moment extrêmement pénible pour l’humanité.

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Navy military and civilian engineers are preparing the latest military communications satellite for a planned Jan. 20 launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

The satellite is part of MUOS, or Mobile User Objective System, which operates like a smartphone network from space, vastly improving secure satellite communications for mobile U.S. forces. Unlike its predecessor system, MUOS provides users a global, on-demand, beyond-line-of-sight capability to transmit and receive high-quality voice and mission data from a high-speed Internet Protocol-based system.

This third of five MUOS satellites was encapsulated into its payload fairing Dec. 19, representing one of the final steps in preparation for its upcoming launch. The payload fairing protects the satellite from forces during the early stages of its journey.

"This third MUOS launch is another major step toward achieving a fully operational MUOS end-to-end capability by 2016," said Navy Capt. Joseph Kan, the MUOS program manager. "The Navy, in close collaboration with the Army, Air Force and our industry partners, is bringing the future of worldwide mobile satellite communications into reality for the United States and potentially allied nations."

The Navy plays a key role in national space efforts by providing narrowband satellite communications for the DoD and other government agencies. While MUOS was designed for mobile users who require worldwide, secure voice and mission data at higher data rates, services are also available for ships, aircraft and vehicles.

MUOS is more than just a five-satellite constellation. It additionally comprises four ground stations across the globe, complex software to manage the network and a Wideband Code Division Multiple Access waveform that serves as an interface for end-user radios.

Two MUOS satellites, launched in 2012 and 2013, are already providing legacy communications capability from their geosynchronous orbit locations 22,000 miles above Earth. Ultimately, the satellite constellation and associated network will extend narrowband communications availability well past 2025.

The Navy's Program Executive Office for Space Systems, located at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command in San Diego, is responsible for the MUOS program.

There were no fireworks on the sun to welcome in the New Year and only a few C-class flares during the last day of 2014. Instead, the sun starts 2015 with an enormous coronal hole near the south pole. This image, captured on Jan. 1, 2015 by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument on NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, shows the coronal hole as a dark region in the south.

Coronal holes are regions of the corona where the magnetic field reaches out into space rather than looping back down onto the surface. Particles moving along those magnetic fields can leave the sun rather than being trapped near the surface. Those trapped particles can heat up and glow, giving us the lovely AIA images. In the parts of the corona where the particles leave the sun, the glow is much dimmer and the coronal hole looks dark.

Coronal holes were first seen in images taken by astronauts on board NASA’s Skylab space station in 1973 and 1974. They can be seen for a long time, although the exact shape changes all the time. The polar coronal hole can remain visible for five years or longer. Each time a coronal hole rotates by the Earth we can measure the particles flowing out of the hole as a high-speed stream, another source of space weather.

Charged particles in the Earth’s radiation belts are accelerated when the high-speed stream runs into the Earth’s magnetosphere. The acceleration of particles in the magnetosphere is studied by NASA’s Van Allen Probes mission.

As Solar Cycle 24 fades, the number of flares each day will get smaller, but the coronal holes provide another source of space weather that needs to be understood and predicted.

LARGE HADRON COLIDER SHUTS DOWN TO PREPARE FOR BIGGER BANGS IN 2015

After coming through with evidence for the long-sought Higgs Boson, Europe's Large Hadron Collider has begun a two-year "Long Shutdown," during which its underground components will be upgraded to run at even higher energies.

The last interacting particle beams were extracted from the machine at 7:24 a.m. Thursday Geneva time, the CERN nuclear physics center said in a news release. Most of the final beam runs were conducted with lead ions as well as protons, to study the conditions that existed in the universe just after the big bang. CERN said single-beam studies will wind down this weekend, and then the LHC's super-cooled components will be brought up to room temperature so that work can begin.

The "Long Shutdown 1," or LS1, marks the longest hiatus for the $10 billion collider since physics runs began in 2009.

"We have every reason to be very satisfied with the LHC’s first three years," CERN Director-General Rolf Heuer said. "The machine, the experiments, the computing facilities and all infrastructures behaved brilliantly, and we have a major scientific discovery in our pocket."

That discovery, announced last July, was the detection of a new subatomic particle fitting the expected characteristics of the Higgs boson, the last big piece of the puzzle for particle physics' Standard Model. The Higgs boson is thought to play a role in producing the rest mass of fundamental particles. Physicists are continuing to analyze data from the LHC's detectors and are expected to provide further details about the new "Higgs-like particle" in the weeks and months ahead.

The LHC has been running at a top energy of 4 trillion electron volts, or 4 TeV per beam, but during the Long Shutdown, the facility's magnets and connections will be checked and upgraded to the point that it can run at its maximum design energy of 7 TeV per beam, starting in 2015. Problems with the LHC's magnets and connections bedeviled the collider during its construction phase: In 2008, a faulty connection caused an explosion that delayed the start of science operations for nearly a year. That incident led CERN to take a go-slower approach to ramping up the LHC's energy.

Other parts of the facility will be upgraded during Long Shutdown 1, ranging from CERN's proton synchrotrons to the ventilation system for the LHC's 17-mile-round (27-kilometer-round) underground tunnel.

Detecting the Higgs boson was the top goal for the LHC's thousands of scientists, engineers and support personnel. During the next phase of operations, researchers hope to tease out insights about other mysteries, such as the nature of dark matter, the possibility that all subatomic particles have as-yet-unseen supersymmetric partners, and the potential existence of extra dimensions of space. So far, the LHC's research teams have reported no evidence of such exotic phenomena, but they're hoping that higher energies will reveal "new physics" beyond the Standard Model.

Scientists won't be idle during the tunnel's shutdown: CERN's mass-storage systems are hanging onto 100 quadrillion bytes of data to analyze, most of which was acquired over the past year. CERN says that amount of data is equivalent to about 700 years' worth of HD-quality movies.

"There will be plenty of physics to do during LS1, and not only at the LHC," CERN Research Director Sergio Bertolucci said. "The LHC is the flagship of CERN's experimental program, but is nevertheless just one component of a very varied research infrastructure. All of the other experiments here have ongoing analyses, so I'm looking forward to many interesting results emerging as LS1 progresses."
