2013 TO BE BUMPER YEAR FOR SPACE SCIENCE: ESA

by Staff Writers
Paris (AFP) Jan 24, 2013

European probes this year will return a treasure trove of data from explorations into the Big Bang, water on Mars and climate change, European Space Agency (ESA) chief Jean-Jacques Dordain said on Thursday.

"2013 will yield an extraordinary harvest" of knowledge about space, Dordain predicted at a start-of-year press conference.

On February 22, scientists will report back on the Soil Moisture and Salinity (SMOS) mission, in which a satellite launched in 2009 is mapping Earth's land surface and oceans for changes linked to global warming.

On March 21, astrophysicists will release the first all-sky map of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) -- the backwash of ancient radiation from the creation of the Universe 14 billion years ago. The map has been generated by the probe Planck, launched in May 2009.

And in June, ESA experts will release a complete "mineralogical map" of Mars, assembled from remote-sensing data provided by Mars Express, which this year marks its 10th year of operations, said Dordain.

Displaying hydrate soils that point to the signature of past water, the map will help selection of sites for an ambitious European-Russian science mission, ExoMars, comprising an orbiter that will launch in 2016 and a rover in 2018.

On December 29, Mars Express will make the closest-ever flyby of the Martian moon Phobos, "skimming" it to within less than 50 kilometres (30 miles) of its surface.
Later this year, Herschel, a space observatory launched in 2009, will provide a complete map of the plane of the Milky Way, enabling astronomers to spot where stars are currently being born in our galaxy.

Also upcoming is the launch in the second half of 2013, of Gaia, a "space astrometry" telescope that will survey a billion stars and provide the largest 3D map of the Milky Way.

ESA also said it would press ahead with the scheduled launch of the first operationally capable satellites in Europe's Galileo programme, the rival to the US Global Positioning System (GPS) of satellite navigation.
Four satellites will be launched in pairs by two Soyuz rockets from ESA's base in Kourou, French Guiana, in the second half of the year. Four test satellites are already in orbit. Ultimately, Galileo will comprise a constellation of 27 satellites and three spares.

ESA's budget for 2013 is 4.2 billion euros (5.6 billion dollars), an increase of around six percent over last year, Dordain said. Earth Observation missions, which have scientific and environmental use, are the biggest single budget item, accounting for 22.9 percent.

SOLAR ERUPTION HEADING TOWARD EARTH

A coronal mass ejection from the sun is headed toward the Earth after erupting Wednesday morning and should arrive here in one to three days, NASA reported.

Observations from the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory and ESA/NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, operated by NASA and the European Space Agency, show the CME left the sun at speeds of around 375 miles per second, a fairly typical speed for such ejections, the space agency said Thursday.

Coronal mass ejections aimed at the Earth can cause a space weather phenomenon called a geomagnetic storm when they hit the Earth's magnetic envelope, the magnetosphere, which can sometimes affect electrical systems on Earth or interfere with GPS or satellite-based communications systems.

However, NASA said, CMEs traveling at the speed of the current one have generally not caused substantial geomagnetic storms although they sometimes cause auroras near the poles.

The ejection is being tracked by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

COLONIZING MARS: Q&A WITH MARS ONE CHIEF BAS LANSDORP

by Mike Wall, SPACE.com Senior Writer
Date: 23 January 2013 Time: 02:23 PM ET

Mars One wants to land four astronauts on the Red Planet in 2023, and it's come up with a creative way to fund this ambitious undertaking.

The Netherlands-based nonprofit plans to stage a global reality-TV event that follows the colonization effort from astronaut selection through the settlers' first years on the Red Planet. Mars One thinks revenues from broadcasting rights and sponsorships will cover most of the one-way mission's estimated $6 billion cost.

The cameras will be turned on soon. Mars One released its basic astronaut requirements earlier this month — you must be at least 18 years old, intelligent, in good mental and physical health and committed to the project — and the televised astronaut-selection process will kick off later this year, officials say.

SPACE.com recently caught up via email with Mars One co-founder and general director Bas Lansdorp. Lansdorp talked about Mars One's business model, the major challenges facing the project and its long-term goals, which include landing new crews on the Red Planet every two years after the first pioneers touch down. [Mars One: 'Big Brother' on Mars? (Video)]

VIDEO : http://www.space.com/16303-reality-tv-show-on-mars-to-follow-settlers-video…

SPACE.com: How did you come up with the idea to fund a Mars colonization effort by staging a global media event?
Bas Lansdorp: It was triggered when I saw the revenue figures of the International Olympic Committee. When my co-founder Arno Wielders and I saw these numbers, we contacted Paul Römer, a well known Dutch media expert, and discussed the media value of putting humans on Mars. After that we talked to many different experts in the field, all of whom are convinced the media value is far greater than the cost associated with our mission to Mars.

SPACE.com: How long do you think people will continue to watch this effort? A few years? A few decades?

Lansdorp: The Mars One mission is of far greater effort and consequence than simply planting a flag. This is Earth’s mission and it involves people from all over the world.

Anyone over 18 years of age can soon apply to be one of the first astronauts. After Mars One experts exclude unsuitable candidates, we will solicit the audience’s help in democratically electing Earths first ambassadors to a new planet — the most important election in the history of our species.

The audience will remain engaged during the training of the elected candidates and will participate in their lives as they travel to and land on Mars through live telecasts and bi-directional communication. The astronauts, who are granted this incredible opportunity by the audience vote, will remain interactive with their supporters on Earth, sharing as much as possible what it is like to live on Mars.

Every year, new candidates for the Mars mission will be elected and every two years new crew members will arrive to Mars. Humanity will have become a multi-planetary species.

This is a story that people will follow for decades.

SPACE.com: What would you say to people skeptical that this business model can work?

Lansdorp: I would say: "Would you not watch humans walk on Mars?"

SPACE.com: How big a colony do you hope to eventually create on Mars?

Lansdorp: I would hope that at some point the colony is large enough to become self sustaining — but this will take many, many decades. Fortunately, Mars One will not be the only one working toward this goal. Several ventures, private and public, will play their roles in bringing humanity to a new planet. [The Boldest Mars Missions in History]

To answer your question: I hope Mars One will establish a settlement of four people on Mars. The first group will be the hardest to accomplish, both from the technical and the financial point of view. I am convinced that once this first crew of four is there, many, many will follow.

SPACE.com: What is the biggest challenge Mars One will have to overcome to be successful?

Lansdorp: A human mission to Mars is one of the most ambitious projects that one could imagine. Three major challenges. In the short term: financing the funding gap between expenditures on the hardware and revenues from the the media event. In the medium term: successfully passing through phases where things do not go as planned — which there will be in a project of this magnitude.

In the long term: finding and training a crew that can successfully perform the first three years of the mission, between departure on Earth and the landing of the second crew.

SPACE.com: Have you already heard from a lot of people interested in becoming Mars One astronauts?

Lansdorp: In the first seven months after we announced our plan in June 2012, we received about 1,000 emails from people interested to go. In the last week we received another 1,000 emails and over 30,000 people subscribed to a mailing list that updates them on any news on the selection procedure.

SPACE.com: What would it mean to humanity if Mars One is successful in creating a Red Planet colony?

Lansdorp: I believe that it will truly change the outlook of our entire species. If humanity can send humans to Mars, is there anything that we cannot do?

I hope that the international approach of Mars One will bring the people of this planet a little closer together at a time when there is so much conflict and suffering. The Mars One mission will demonstrate how a diverse team of people from various backgrounds and countries can train for and then go on a challenging mission together. This endeavor will increase awareness of both cultural differences and similarities and with that, respect for who we are.

And if on Mars we do find life — that would change our entire perspective on the universe.

SPACE.com: Do you have any interest in going to Mars yourself?

Lansdorp: Yes, and 15 years ago I started my idea for Mars One because I wanted to go to Mars. But 15 years ago I was 20 years old. Now I have a wonderful girlfriend. I doubt she would ever leave Earth for Mars. But we’ll see?!

I will certainly experience a strong mix of jealousy and joy when the first four people leave Earth on humanity’s greatest expedition yet.

'HABITABLE ZONE' FOR ALIEN PLANETS, AND POSSIBLY LIFE, REDEFINED

"It is he that buildeth his stories in the heaven, and hath founded his troop in the earth; he that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name."
Amos 9:6

"And similar to them are those who went down as prisoners in their train, who are in the second heaven, imprisoned in great darkness."
2 Enoch 18:3

"Another typical "Enochic" detail in chapter 18 is the reference to God’s sentencing the Watchers under the earth "until heaven and earth are ended forever." This motif also appears to stem from the early Enochic lore where the fallen Watchers are also imprisoned under the earth until the day of the final judgment."

One of the most important characteristics of an alien planet is whether or not it falls into what's called the habitable zone — a Goldilocks-like range of not-too-close, not-too-far distances from the parent star that might allow the planet to host life.

Now scientists have redefined the boundaries of the habitable zone for alien planets, potentially kicking out some exoplanaets that were thought to fall within it, and maybe allowing a few that had been excluded to squeeze in.
"This will have a significant impact on the number of exoplanets that are within habitable zone," said research team leader Ravi Kumar Kopparapu of Penn State University.

The habitable zone defines the region where a planet might be able to retain liquid water on its surface. Any closer to the star and water would vaporize away; any farther, and it would freeze to ice. But water in its liquid state is what scientists are after, since that is thought to be a prerequisite for life.

The new definition of the habitable zone is based on updated atmospheric databases called HITRAN (high-resolution transmission molecular absorption) and HITEMP (high-temperature spectroscopic absorption parameters), which give the absorption parameters of water and carbon dioxide — two properties that strongly influence the atmospheres of exoplanets, determining whether those planets could host liquid water. [9 Exoplanets That Could Host Alien Life]

The scientists cautioned that the habitable zone definition still does not take into account feedback effects from clouds, which will also affect a planet's habitability.

The previous habitable zone definitions were derived about 20 years ago by Penn State researcher James Kasting, who was also part of the team behind the updates.

"At the time when he wrote that paper no exoplanets were discovered," Kopparapu told SPACE.com. "In 20 years, hundreds, maybe thousands have been discovered."

The graphic shows habitable zone distances around various types of stars, according to an updated habitable zone definition. Some of the known extrasolar planets that are considered to be in the habitable zone of their stars are also shown. On this scale, Earth-Sun distance is 1 astronomical unit, which is roughly 150 million kilometers.

The new definition isn't radically different from the old one. For example, in our own solar system, the boundaries of the habitable zone have shifted from between 0.95 astronomical units (AU, or the distance between Earth and the sun) and 1.67 AU, to the new range of 0.99 AU to 1.7 AU.

"It's a surprise that Earth is so close to the inner edge of the habitable zone," said astronomer Abel Méndez of the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo, who was not part of the team behind the redefinition.

Méndez manages a list, called the Habitable Exoplanet Catalog, off all the known planets beyond our solar system that could be habitable to life. The new study will necessitate some adjustments to the catalog, he said.

"Right now as I see it as a significant change," Méndez said. "Many of those planets that we believe were inside are now outside. But on the other side, it extends the habitable zone's outer edge, so a few planets that are farther away might fall inside the habitable zone now."

He mentioned one planet in particular, Gliese 581d, was thought to lie at the outer edge of its star's habitable zone. With the new definition, though, it falls almost smack in the middle, making it perhaps a better candidate for extraterrestrial life.

"That will be a big change for that particular planet," Méndez said. "That means the prospects for life on the planet will be much better."

The researchers detail their new habitable zone definition in a paper to be published in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

VISION

COMET D14 TO HIT FEBRUARY 22, 2013

Posted by queenmaryofmagdala on January 8, 2013 in Uncategorized

Comet D14 is scheduled to pass earth on February 15, but myself along with other family members have had visions of it hitting the earth on February 22, 2013. It will hit the ocean and cause Britain to be flooded. Sinking ships and killing thousands of people and animals. This will come to pass.

It will hit the Norwegian Sea between Norway and Britain it will span in 7 different directions flooding Norway, Britain France, Germany, Italy, Greece and Spain. As in Revelation 8:9 it will sink great ships and where else in the world has more ships or fishing boats then Norway? She is wormwood.

As in Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

This is the first comet of 2013, the next one is on November 28,2013, it is the (ison) comet.

Prepare and tell everyone to be ready.

Avant goût de ce qui pourrait se passer en après-midi???

AFPQC | Par AFP Publication: 15/02/2013 03:54 EST | Mis à jour: 15/02/2013 05:40 EST

RUSSIAN METEOR SHOWER LINKED TO DA14 ASTEROID?

“It was like a scene from the Armageddon movie”

Experts are pondering whether a meteorite shower which caused panic in Russia, injuring over 500 people, devastating buildings and wiping out the cell phone network, is linked to today’s fly-by of DA14, the “city killer” asteroid that NASA has assured will not hit the earth.

VIDEO : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRSrdOfbnHI&feature=player_embedded

The meteor shower, which was dramatically captured by numerous people on cell phone videos, was described by some as “like a scene from the Armageddon movie,” with YouTube clips showing a trail appearing across the sky before a dazzling bright object appears followed by loud booms.

The rocks crashed at around 9:20am local time, mainly over the sparsely populated city of Chelyabinsk, 900 miles east of Moscow. 20,000 rescue workers have been sent to aid recovery efforts, with the full extent of the damage not yet known. Windows were smashed and buildings were devastated, including the 6,000 square feet roof of a zinc factory, as some residents feared “doomsday” had arrived.

The main chunk of the meteor fell into a frozen lake, creating a huge hole in the ice. Experts are still undecided whether the event was caused by a meteor shower or a single meteor, as well as whether the damage was caused by the shock wave or actual debris, although residents reported fireballs crashing to the ground.

Space experts are divided on whether the meteor is connected to today’s fly-by of asteroid DA14, which will pass within 17,200 miles of the earth’s surface, closer than many orbiting satellites.

The European Space Agency (ESA) put out a message on its official Twitter account claiming that the meteor shower was not debris from the DA14 asteroid.

However, Tatiana Bordovitsina, an astronomy professor at Tomsk State University in western Siberia, told RIA Novosti that the meteor, “could have been debris preceding the asteroid.”

Professor Ian Crawford of Birkbeck University told Sky News that, “it was too early to tell if this incident was connected to the asteroid passing by the earth tonight,” but added that if meteorites were traveling with the asteroid, they would be several hours ahead of it.

Curtin University asteroid expert Phil Bland told an Australian website, “Is it connected to the flyby? A lot of folks would say “no”. Personally, I’ve always kind of liked the idea that there are streams of asteroid debris – so you can have smaller stuff that precede and trail a bigger object. It seems like an awful big coincidence if it’s not connected.”

Simon O’Toole, an astronomer at the Australian Astronomical Observatory, thinks that there is unlikely to be a connection. “As pointed out elsewhere, DA14 is still half a million kilometres away, travelling at 8km per second, for a start! Could it be part of the asteroid that has broken away and reached earth already? This seems unlikely to me,” he said.

Dr Stephen Lowry, planetary scientist at the University of Kent, doubted the connection but remarked that the meteorite shower was “an incredible conincidence.”

“If I had to bet, I would say it’s not related. But it’s not unheard of for asteroids to have companion bodies with them,” said Mark Ford of the British and Irish Meteorite Society.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev reacted to the incident by warning that the “whole planet” is vulnerable to near-earth objects, while nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky even claimed the event was actually “the test of a new weapon by the Americans,” adding that, “[Secretary of state John] Kerry warned [foreign minister Sergei] Lavrov on Monday … that there would be such a provocation and that it might affect Russia.”

Officials issued a statement assuring that no nuclear sites had been hit by the meteor and that no radiation leaks had been recorded.

On the same day a meteorite struck Russia and an asteroid buzzed Earth, there's news of ANOTHER meteorite that apparently exploded over Cuba.

According to RT:
Citation:
An object reportedly fell from the sky and exploded loudly over the province of Cienfuegos in southern Cuba, the local TV service Rodas cites eyewitnesses as saying. Residents described the object as being comparable in size to a bus, adding that their houses shook following the explosion. Cuban specialists are examining the scene for potential remains of the object. No damages or injuries have been reported.

According to YouReporterNews.IT (Google Translation):
Citation:
"The explosion shook the houses in the place," reported witnesses to the local TV stations. In a report released by Rodas, in the province of Cienfuegos some residents have described a very bright light that has come to have large size, comparable to that of a bus, before exploding in the sky.

Marcos Rodriguez, an expert in the area, claimed that it was a "fireball," a piece of stone and metal, which entered the Earth's atmosphere at high speed. " Cuban specialists are examining the area for possible remains Rodas minerals falling from the sky, the TV station added.

The Brazilian site UOL reports the Cuban explosion actually took place on Wednesday night, not after the Russian meteorite struck.

Yoani Sanchez, a Cuban dissident blogger in Havana, tweeted the following, citing the Russian meteorite and a fireball in the sky over Cuba:

In a second tweet she says (rough translation), "I have family in Rodas who tell me that many people are still bewildered and stunned by the fall of the meteorite":

The Russian meteorite strike and close-call asteroid, combined, were already considered an insanely improbable coincidence. So what does that make a second major meteorite strike in the same week?

Evacuate the Earth to go where? Two possibilities : On the second Heaven (other dimension) were are the fallen angels, so they will use you all as a slaves under demonic spirits or the Third Heaven were's the throne of God. You have to be a disciple of Christ, the Most High to have access to this place. And in the Third Heaven, there's no place but this kind of slavery. They prepare you to evacuate but they're the ones behind this apocalypse destruction to trap you. Truth or lie... Truth or lie..

NASA SEES MONSTER SUNSPOT GROWING FAST, SOLAR STORMS POSSIBLE

A colossal sunspot on the surface of the sun is large enough to swallow six Earths whole, and could trigger solar flares this week, NASA scientists say.

The giant sunspot was captured on camera by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory as it swelled to enormous proportions over the 48 hours spanning Tuesday and Wednesday (Feb. 19 and 20). SDO is one of several spacecraft that constantly monitor the sun's space weather environment.

"It has grown to over six Earth diameters across, but its full extent is hard to judge since the spot lies on a sphere, not a flat disk," wrote NASA spokeswoman Karen Fox, of the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., in an image description.

The sunspot region is actually a collection of dark blemishes on the surface of the sun that evolved rapidly over the last two days. Sunspots form from shifting magnetic fields at the sun's surface, and are actually cooler than their surrounding solar material.

According to Fox, some of the intense
magnetic fields in the sunspot region are pointing in opposite directions, making it ripe for solar activity.

"This is a fairly unstable configuration that scientists know can lead to eruptions of radiation on the sun called solar flares," Fox explained.

Solar Quiz: How Well Do You Know Our Sun?

Many of us take the sun for granted, giving it little thought until it scorches our skin or gets in our eyes. But our star is a fascinating and complex object, a gigantic fusion reactor that gives us life. How much do you know about the sun?

Many of us take the sun for granted, giving it little thought until it scorches our skin or gets in our eyes. But our star is a fascinating and complex object, a gigantic fusion reactor that gives us life. How much do you know about the sun?

The sun is currently in the midst of an active phase of its 11-year solar weather cycle and is expected to reach peak activity sometime this year. The current sun weather cycle is known as Solar Cycle 24.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory launched in 2010 and is just one of a fleet of spacecraft keeping close watch on the sun for signs of solar flares, eruptions and other space weather events.

2 DAY NOTICE: EARTH GETS ANOTHER CLOSE GRAZE BY NEWLY DISCOVERED ASTEROIR ON MARCH 4

Posted on March 3, 2013by END TIME HEADLINES

A newly found asteroid will pass just inside the orbit of the Moon, with its closest approach on March 4, 2013 at 07:35 UTC. Named 2013 EC, the asteroid is about the size of the space rock that exploded over Russia two and a half weeks ago, somewhere between 10-17 meters wide (the Russian meteorite is estimated to be about 15 meters wide when it entered Earth’s atmosphere). 2014 EC was discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Observatory in Arizona on March 2. There is no chance this asteroid will hit Earth. 2013 EC will come within 396,000 kilometers from Earth, (246,000 miles, or around 1.0 lunar distance, 0.0026 AU. The Moon’s distance from the Earth varies between 363,104 km (225,622 miles) at perigee (closest) and 406,696 km (252,088 miles) at apogee (most distant point). Gianluca Masi from the Virtual Telescope Project had a live view of the asteroid when it was about twice the distance of the Moon, and a replay of that webcast is available below. “That we are finding all these asteroids recently does not mean that we are being visited by more asteroids,” Masi said during the webcast, “just that our ability to detect them has gotten so much better. Our technology has improved a lot over the past decades.” EP

LONG AWAITED, COMET PanSTARRS NOW GLOWS IN THE TWILIGHT

by Staff Writers for Sky and Telescope
Boston MA (SPX) Mar 13, 2013

illustration only
Look west around the middle of twilight on a clear evening this week, and with a little luck - and maybe binoculars - you might spot a one-time-only visitor newly arrived from very deep space.

Skywatchers have been anticipating Comet PanSTARRS for almost two years. A few days ago it passed closest by the Earth and is now being lit most brilliantly by the Sun. In the past couple weeks it decorated the twilight sky for folks in the Southern Hemisphere.
Now people in the world's mid-northern latitudes have their turn. The comet should be at its best March 12-18, possibly just bright enough to spot with the unaided eye in clear twilight if you know exactly where to look.

"Our good views should begin around March 12th and 13th, when the crescent Moon is there to point the way," says Alan MacRobert, a senior editor at Sky and Telescope magazine. "Before then the comet is too near the horizon. It will start fading later this week, so if the sky is clear, don't miss your chance."

By March 20th it should be only half as bright as it was seven days before, but on the other hand it will be a little higher and seen through thinner, clearer air.

The best time to look is about 30 to 45 minutes after your local sunset time. This narrow window of viewing time comes after twilight fades enough for the comet to show through at all, but before it sinks too low and sets.

On Tuesday March 12th, look for the very thin crescent Moon very low due west. The comet will be just to its left, by two or three finger-widths at arm's length.

On Wednesday March 13th, you'll see a thicker crescent Moon higher up. Look below it by about the width of your fist at arm's length.

On Thursday the 14th, look two fists below the Moon and perhaps a bit to the right.

After that, the comet will gradually move to the right from evening to evening as it begins to fade.

Look for a fuzzy star with a short upward tail. Binoculars will give a much better view. And if you have a telescope, now's the time to bring it out!

The comet is known to astronomers as C/2011 L4 to distinguish it from others named PanSTARRS.

The automated Pan-STARRS sky survey telescope in Hawaii discovered it in June 2011 as a tiny, distant speck heading in from the far reaches of the solar system.

Even though it's passing closest to us around now, it's still a distant 105 million miles or so from Earth, rather far even by comet standards. That's why it looks small.

"What we're seeing," says Sky and Telescope editor in chief Robert Naeye, "is mostly a huge plume of dust, lit by sunlight, that's spraying from the comet's tiny little nucleus. The nucleus is an icy frozen dirtball just a few miles across. As it comes near the Sun, its surface heats up and some of the ice evaporates, letting loose dust and debris."

Comet PanSTARRS is on an orbit that's bringing it by the Sun for the first time, after it has spent billions of years in the cold of deep space. In the coming months it will fly back out again, never to return.

This is the first of two promising comets for 2013. The other is Comet ISON, which may put on a brighter display in the dawn sky of early December (for more about that one, see here).

NASA WARNS PUBLIC THAT THEIR HANDS ARE TIED AND TO PRAY FOR “COMING ASTEROID” COLLISIONS WITH EARTH.

Posted on March 20, 2013by END TIME HEADLINES

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) – NASA chief Charles Bolden has advice on how to handle a large asteroid headed toward New York City: Pray. That’s about all the United States – or anyone for that matter – could do at this point about unknown asteroids and meteors that may be on a collision course with Earth, Bolden told lawmakers at a U.S. House of Representatives Science Committee hearing on Tuesday. An asteroid estimated to be have been about 55 feet in diameter exploded on February 15 over Chelyabinsk, Russia, generating shock waves that shattered windows and damaged buildings. More than 1,500 people were injured. Later that day, a larger, unrelated asteroid discovered last year passed about 17,200 miles from Earth, closer than the network of television and weather satellites that ring the planet. The events “serve as evidence that we live in an active solar system with potentially hazardous objects passing through our neighborhood with surprising frequency,” said Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson, a Texas Democrat. ”We were fortunate that the events of last month were simply an interesting coincidence rather than a catastrophe,” said Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican, who called the hearing to learn what is being done and how much money is needed to better protect the planet. NASA has found and is tracking about 95 percent of the largest objects flying near Earth, those that are .62 miles or larger in diameter. ”An asteroid of that size, a kilometer or bigger, could plausibly end civilization,” White House science advisor John Holdren told legislators at the same hearing. But only about 10 percent of an estimated 10,000 potential “city-killer” asteroids, those with a diameter of about 165 feet have been found, Holdren added.

On average, objects of that size are estimated to hit Earth about once every 1,000 years. ”From the information we have, we don’t know of an asteroid that will threaten the population of the United States,” Bolden said. “But if it’s coming in three weeks, pray.” In addition to stepping up its monitoring efforts and building international partnerships, NASA is looking at developing technologies to divert an object that may be on a collision course with Earth. ”The odds of a near-Earth object strike causing massive casualties and destruction of infrastructure are very small, but the potential consequences of such an event are so large it makes sense to takes the risk seriously,” Holdren said. About 66 million years ago, an object 6 miles in diameter is believed to have smashed into what is now the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, leading to the demise of the dinosaurs, as well as most plant and animal life on Earth. The asteroid that exploded over Russia last month was the largest object to hit Earth’s atmosphere since the 1908 Tunguska event when an asteroid or comet exploded over Siberia, leveling 80 million trees over more than 830 square miles (2,150 sq km). DRAMATIC METEOR STREAKS THROUGH EVENING SKY

Posted by Jason Samenow on March 22, 2013 at 8:27 pm

Our social media feeds are being peppered by reports that a large, vibrant meteor shot through the sky shortly after 7:50 p.m. The meteor traveled from west to east in the northeast sky eyewitnesses say.

The American Meteor Society (AMS) has received over 300 reports of the meteor from Florida to Maine, and over 50 reports from Canada.

Here are some of the accounts we’ve received via Twitter: Take a look to the comments http://twitchy.com/2013/03/22/reports-of-meteor-sightings-light-up-east-coast/?utm_source=autotweet&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=twitter
Here are a couple reports from our Facebook readers:
Jamie Coe: I saw it in Midlothian Virginia at 7:53pm. Never seen anything quite like it. Very bright green with a yellow tail.
M L Anderson Relle: I saw it, around 7:50 pm, eastern sky, white streak turning to flash of green and careening to the ground. I am in western Montgomery County near the Potomac River. The dusky sky was too light for it to have been a shooting star, the object was also too big, I thought it was a crashing plane, it started out white and burst into green.

These accounts suggest this meteor met the criteria of a fireball: a larger than normal meteor. Here are some helpful details on fireballs from the AMS:

Citation:
A fireball is a meteor that is larger than normal. Most meteors are only the size of tiny pebbles. A meteor the size of a softball can produce light equivalent to the full moon for a short instant. The reason for this is the extreme velocity at which these objects strike the atmosphere. Even the slowest meteors are still traveling at 10 miles per SECOND, which is much faster than a speeding bullet. Fireballs occur every day over all parts of the Earth.
Fireballs often appear much closer than they really are. The AMS receives countless reports that an object landed just over the hill when in fact it was several hundred miles away and was witnessed over several states or provinces. It is your perspective that makes meteors appear to strike the horizon when in fact they are still high in the atmosphere. This is much like a jetliner seen low in your sky. It appears low to you and close to the ground, but for someone located many miles away in that direction, the jetliner is passing high overhead. Meteors become visible at approximately 50 miles above the Earth’s surface. Friction slows these objects down until they fall below the velocity necessary to produce light. At this point they still lie at least 5 miles high in the sky. They are invisible below this altitude and cannot be seen as they basically free falling to the ground at 200mph. Very few meteors actually reach the ground as 99.99% completely disintegrate while still 10-20 miles up in the atmosphere.

Eyewitnesses can log their meteor/fireball reports on the AMS website. Scores of sightings from this evening’s event have been entered.

THE COMET SET TO LIGHT UP THE SKY: HUBBLE GETS FIRST GLIMPSE OF ISON AS IT MOVES CLOSER TO EARTH

[*]Comet could shine brighter than Venus or even the full moon in November. Photographed on April 10, when it was 394 million miles from Earth

By Mark Prigg

[*]PUBLISHED:20:22 GMT, 23 April 2013| UPDATED:22:36 GMT, 23 April 2013

The Hubble Space Telescope has given astronomers their clearest view yet of Comet ISON, which experts believe could light up the sky in a breathtaking display later this year.

The image of Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) was photographed on April 10, when the comet was slightly closer than Jupiter’s orbit at a distance of 386 million miles from the Sun, and 394 million miles from Earth.

Experts believe it will get dramatically brighter as it swings around the sun in late November, with some claiming the comet could shine brighter than Venus or even the full moon.

Comet C/ISON was imaged with the Hubble Space telescope on April 10 using the Wide Field Camera 3, when the comet was 394 million miles from Earth

HOW BIG IS ISON?

Preliminary measurements from the Hubble images suggest that the nucleus of ISON is no larger than three or four miles across.

This is remarkably small considering the high level of activity observed in the comet so far, said researchers.

The comet’s dusty coma, or head of the comet, is approximately 3,100 miles across, or 1.2 times the width of Australia. A dust tail extends more than 57,000 miles, far beyond Hubble’s field of view.

Even at its current distance, the comet is already active as sunlight warms the surface and causes frozen volatiles to sublimate.

Comets become more active as they near the inner solar system, where the Sun’s heat evaporates their ices into jets of gases and dust.
[*] A detailed analysis of the dust coma surrounding the solid, icy nucleus reveals a strong jet blasting dust particles off the Sunward-facing side of the comet’s nucleus, Nasa says.

Like all comets, ISON is a 'dirty snowball' a clump of frozen gases mixed with dust, formed in a distant reach of the solar system, traveling on an orbit influenced by the gravitational pull of the Sun and its planets.

ISON’s orbit will bring it closest to the Sun, of 700,000 miles on November 28.

'As a first-time visitor to the inner solar system, Comet C/ISON provides astronomers a rare opportunity to study a fresh comet preserved since the formation of the solar system,' said Planetary Science Institute Research Scientist Jian-Yang Li, who led a team that imaged the comet.

'The expected high brightness of the comet as it nears the Sun allows for many important measurements that are impossible for most other fresh comets.'

An enhanced image reveals enhanced dust particle release on the sunward-facing side of the comet's nucleus, and the small, solid body at the core of the comet

Next week while the Hubble still has the comet in view, the Maryland team will use the space telescope to gather information about ISON’s gases.

'We want to look for the ratio of the three dominant ices, water, frozen carbon monoxide, and frozen carbon dioxide, or dry ice,' said Maryland astronomy Prof. Michael A’Hearn.

'That can tell us the temperature at which the comet formed, and with that temperature, we can then say where in the solar system it formed.'

COMETS: A PLANETARY 'DIRTY SNOWBALL'

Comets are dusty balls of ice, which generally originate from the Kuipler belt - a region of icy small bodies beyond Neptune.
Occasionally, a comet gets dislodged from its orbit, and plunges in to the inner solar system.

They differ from asteroids, which are made of metal or rock, and are usually the left over remnants of planets or moons.
Comets are not really reflective - they only reflect 4 per cent of the the Sun's rays, about the same as coal.
So although they look brilliantly white from Earth, they are black at the surface.

Halley's comet is the most well-known, named after Edmond Halley who noted the regular 75-76-year appearance of a comet, and predicted it would return in 1758, although sadly the astronomer died 16 years before he was proved correct.

Halley's comet has passed within a fraction of the Earth before - in 1910 the Earth even moved through the comet's tail.

Sadly, the 1986 re-appearance was the worst for 2,000 years, as the Earth and the comet were on opposite sides of the sun.

NASA: METEOR SLAMS INTO MOON, CAUSES EXPLOSION VISIBLE TO NAKED EYE ON EARTH

Posted on May 18, 2013by The Extinction Protocol

May 18, 2013 – SPACE – A massive explosion from a meteor which crashed into the Moon was visible to the naked eye on Earth, NASA says. A boulder-sized meteor slammed into the moon in March, causing an explosion so bright anyone looking up at the right moment would have spotted it, NASA said. NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office is reporting the discovery of the brightest impact seen on the Moon in the eight years the monitoring program has run the National Geographic reports. About 300 lunar impacts have been logged over the years but this latest impact, from March 17, is considered much, much brighter than anything else observed. It is understood the space rock left a 20m-wide crater after it slammed into the Moon’s surface at 90,000km/h. “We have seen a couple of others in the ‘wow’ category but not this bright,” said Robert Suggs, manager of NASA’s Lunar Impact Monitoring Program at Marshall Spaceflight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The blast lasted only about a single second and shone like a 4th magnitude star—making it bright enough to see with just the unaided eye. –Herald Sun

SIGNS IN THE HEAVENS: FOUR FIREBALLS SEEN IN THE U.S SKIES IN LAST 24 HOURS

May 19, 2013

In the last 24 hours the AMS has received confirmed reports about 4 unique fireball events all occurring near 4:00 AM UTC time. The most recent event occurred in Arkansas and Missouri on May 19th near 3:37 UTC. At the same time 3:37 UTC 4 witnesses reported a fireball in Arizona. The distance between these two locations would inhibit witnesses from observing the same fireball from both locations. On May 18th two large fireball meteors were also spotted within an hour of each other, one over the central east coast and another in Colorado. Below is a table of the events in question. Earth may lie in the path of a dangerous gamma-ray burst that could wipe out a quarter of our atmospheric ozone.

Astronomers say WR 104, a Wolf-Rayet star about 8,000 light years away, could go supernova any day, which would generate gamma-rays that could reach earth.

- University of Kansas physicist Adrian Melott

"We could see it go supernova anywhere from tomorrow to 500,000 years from now," astronomer Grant Hill told Forbes. "For all intents and purposes, the gamma-ray burst and optical photons from the supernova would arrive simultaneously."

Gamma-ray bursts are triggered by supernovae, or exploding stars.

There has been much debate over whether a gamma-ray burst from WR 104 would reach earth, but Dr Hill said it depended on the star's rotation.

"If you look at WR 104 and the image of its pinwheel, it really is a visceral and powerful argument that the thing is face on with an inclination of zero," Dr Hill said. This would mean earth was directly in the line of fire from the star.

University of Kansas physicist Adrian Melott told Forbes such a gamma-ray burst would cause a 50 percent increase in UVB radiation.
"You would first notice a 10-second blue flash in the upper atmosphere, but then the damage would be done," he said.

WR 104 was discovered by University of Sydney astronomer Peter Tuthill in 1998.
