SCIENTIFIC RELIGION

The relationship between science and religion is an important theme in Crowley's writings. He constantly referred to the system of the A.'.A.'. as Scientific Illuminism, and the motto he chose for his journal The Equinox was "The method of science -- the aim of religion."

Crowley frequently referred to Thelema as a religion (for numerous examples, see Bill Heidrick's article "From the Outbasket" in the Thelema Lodge Calendar, November 1992 e.v.). He was also clear about the fundamentally religious nature of the O.T.O. system when, in his Editorial in the Equinox III:1, he described O.T.O. as "the first of the great religious Societies to accept the Law." However, In Chapter 31 of Magick Without Tears, he was equally clear that he had serious reservations regarding the generally anti-scientific and anti-magical character of most traditional religious systems, to the point where he doubted the usefulness of the term 'religion' in reference to Thelema, at least without some kind of qualifier. He said, "our system is a religion just so far as a religion means an enthusiastic putting-together of a series of doctrines, no one of which must in any way clash with Science or Magick." In his Constitutions of the Order of Thelemites, he provided us with the terminology we need, by declaring opposition to all superstitious religions, as obstacles to the establishment of scientific religion.

Crowley's emphasis on science is often understood as referring to an application of the techniques of scientific inquiry to one's personal spiritual practices. However, his notion of scientific religion means more than this. Referring back to Magick Without Tears, we can infer that scientific religion is to be defined as "an enthusiastic putting-together of a series of doctrines, no one of which must in any way clash with Science or Magick." We find a concrete example of this in Chapter 73 of Crowley's Confessions, where he describes his considerations in composing our Gnostic Mass:

"Human nature demands (in the case of most people) the satisfaction of the religious instinct, and, to very many, this may best be done by ceremonial means. I wished therefore to construct a ritual through which people might enter into ecstasy as they have always done under the influence of appropriate ritual. In recent years, there has been an increasing failure to attain this object, because the established cults shock their intellectual convictions and outrage their common sense. Thus their minds criticize their enthusiasm; they are unable to consummate the union of their individual souls with the universal soul as a bridegroom would be to consummate his marriage if his love were constantly reminded that its assumptions were intellectually absurd.

"I resolved that my Ritual should celebrate the sublimity of the operation of universal forces without introducing disputable metaphysical theories. I would neither make nor imply any statement about nature which would not be endorsed by the most materialistic man of science."




If we are to realize the principles of Crowley's concept of scientific religion, we must be capable of critically evaluating our own opinions, assumptions, doctrines, and paradigms regarding the natural world, in accordance with the practical principles of logic, and in the light of the best and most current scientific knowledge.

This does not necessarily require the outright rejection of the value of revelation, of sacred writings, or of traditional rituals, practices, and symbol systems. It does require maintaining an open mind as to how we interpret these things, how we contextualize them, and what conclusions we draw from them. If a passage in a holy book appears to contradict a demonstrated fact of nature, then the passage may be false; but it may also have simply been incorrectly interpreted. If a religious or magical doctrine cannot be reconciled with the best and most current scientific knowledge, then it may be time for the basis of that doctrine to be reinterpreted. If a historically important interpretive document presents views that are no longer scientifically sound, then we need to ensure that the document is understood within its historical context.

Matters of the Spirit lie generally outside the bounds of real scientific inquiry. The Holy Guardian Angel cannot be reliably photographed. We do not know the exact height and weight of the god Anubis, or of the demon IZNR. The visions of an entranced skryer are not necessarily repeatable by subsequent investigators. The psychologist and the physicist can give us no more certain data about Gnosis than can the historian, or the mystic. Nevertheless, the mystic, the magician, and the priest have much to learn from the scientist.

The doctrines of science can influence our understanding of spiritual phenomena, and if we are to realize the principles of scientific religion, this influence is to be greatly desired. However, one of the fundamental axioms of the scientific viewpoint is that our understanding of nature is never absolute. Scientific knowledge is constantly changing, refining itself, occasionally reversing itself, as it grows. New ideas and doctrines replace old ideas and doctrines, as the overall database of knowledge grows larger and more accurate. The scientific explanation of a given phenomenon offered in 1920 can be as obsolete today as the theory of phlogiston was then. A single experiment can completely overturn a scientific doctrine.

If we offer a scientific or natural explanation for a spiritual phenomenon, we must realize that such an explanation may need to be revised in the future. A high spiritual truth may be timeless and constant, but its explanation, interpretation, and application in the mundane world may require adjustment from time to time as more information comes available.

For example, as noted by many authors on anthropology, religion, mythology, and occultism, the Phallus has been worshipped in various cultures at various times as an emblem of the generative process -- and thus of earthly life and death, generation and regeneration, as well as an emblem of the pleasure and joy derived from the procreative act that forms such a fundamental aspect of our wills as incarnate beings. The epithet "Lord of Life and Joy" is an apt one for this image.

But the image is not necessarily the thing itself. Korzybski put it best, "the map is not the territory." The phallic image is a graphic depiction of the penis, the male organ of reproduction. The thing itself, though, in this case, is the concept of the Essence of Life, i.e., that which is truly at the core of the sexual generative process. Can we honestly say that the penis, that tube of flesh appended to the male physique, is itself the very Essence of Life and Death? The penis is merely a vehicle for the transmission of the semen, which (we have learned) is merely a vehicle for transmission of spermatozoa, which (we have learned quite recently) are merely vehicles for transmission of DNA -- which contains, in its nucleotide sequence, the coded information necessary for generation and regeneration -- the information that lies at the essential and irreducible core of the sexual generative process, and, therefore, represents the very Essence of Life itself.

But there is the sperm, and there is also the egg; and both the sperm and the egg contain this essential coded information, that which is aptly symbolized by the image of the phallus. In fact, the essential information contained in both the sperm and the egg is incomplete, and thus somewhat less than truly essential, without the other.

The DNA in human cells is contained in the nuclei of the cells, within a number of rod-like structures called chromosomes. The majority of the cells of the human body contain two complete sets of 23 chromosomes, one set from the father and one set from the mother. When these cells divide, the chromosomes of the parent cell replicate themselves and are distributed evenly between the two new daughter cells through a process called mitosis. Each daughter cell receives a full complement of 46 chromosomes.

However (as everyone who has passed high school biology since the early 20th century should know), the sperm and the egg are produced through a different process, known as meiosis. In meiosis, there are four daughter cells rather than two, and each daughter cell receives only 23 chromosomes, half the normal complement -- one chromosome from each original pair of chromosomes. These four daughter cells are the gametes, the sperm and egg cells, which are incapable of further division because their chromosomes are unpaired. Their chromosomes must be paired with chromosomes from another gamete, in order to initiate the process of cell division that is the creation of a new incarnate being. If these cells do not unite with their complement within a relatively short period of time, they simply die.

Before the processes of mitosis and meiosis were fully understood, there was a great deal of speculation and contention about which sex was responsible for carrying the true Essence of Life, and the various hypotheses proposed were influenced by religious, cultural, and even political concerns.

The thinking on these matters from ancient times through the Renaissance (in Europe) fell generally into two major camps. One held that it was the male who carried the True Essence, the Seed of Life, and who "planted" this seed in the fertile soil of the womb of the female, where it was nourished and protected as it developed, on its own, into new Life. For these phallicists, only men possessed this Divine Spark of Life, and women did not. The ovists, for lack of a better term, held the opposite; that it was women who possessed the Seed of Life within their bodies, and that the function of men in the reproductive process was one of enabling or fertilization; of "watering the soil" so that the seed that resided therein might sprout and grow.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, these primitive doctrines were refined into a scientific school of thought called preformationism, which held that living beings were essentially fully-formed prior to conception. This school of thought was divided into the two classical factions, the spermists and the ovists. The doctrine of spermist preformation is exemplified by the famous Homunculus image, drawn by Nicholas Hartsoecker in 1694, and supposedly based on an observation of Anton van Leeuwenhoek. The image shows a spermatozoon containing, within its head, a tiny, but fully-formed, human being, and the implication is that the sperm contains the complete, preformed essence of the unborn person; whereas the egg is merely an inert, nutritive, sheltering matrix. Crowley reproduced Hartsoecker's Homunculus on the Hermit Trump of the Thoth Tarot Deck. Opposed to the spermist preformationists were the ovist preformationists of the 18th century, led by Regnier de Graaf, who believed that it was the egg that contained the complete essence of the human being, and that the sperm was merely a triggering mechanism for development. The entire doctrine of preformationism, however, was completely discredited by the embryological observations of Caspar Wolff in the late 18th century. Any remaining controversy over whether the sperm or the egg was more important was finally settled in 1875 by Wilhelm Oskar Hertwig, who demonstrated that the fertilization process required the fusion of the nuclei of both cells. The processes of mitosis and meiosis were fairly well understood in a mechanical sense by the late 1890s (mitosis was understood first), but the structure and mode of replication of the DNA molecule was not understood until the 1950s.


 
The extent of Crowley's understanding of these developments is uncertain, except, of course, that he died before the discovery of DNA. The Devil Trump of the Thoth Tarot deck contains an image that appears to be a diagram of either mitosis or meiosis, in the context of a larger, clearly phallic motif. The pattern of lines in the two orbs that form the testes of the phallic image closely resemble a textbook diagram of what is either the middle stage of mitosis in two adjacent cells, or a later stage of meiosis, where the two initial daughter cells are about to divide to form the four gametes. Crowley says nothing particularly enlightening about this diagram in the Book of Thoth, or in his notes on the Thoth deck, or in his correspondence with Frieda Harris.

Whether the ovist doctrine or the spermist/phallicist doctrine came first really doesn't matter to this discussion, nor does the question of whether Crowley subscribed to either doctrine; since both doctrines have been proven wrong. However, it should be noted that the phallicist doctrine has had much more of an impact on the underlying paradigms of our culture -- residue, Crowley might say, of the Aeon of Osiris. Note, for example, that the very word 'sperm' means seed. Cultural paradigms, like spiritual traditions, can arise from, or be justified by, the scientific doctrines of a particular time period. Unfortunately, they can often persist long after those scientific doctrines have been discredited. Disputable metaphysical theories regarding the "soul" or "divine spark" aside, there is simply no longer a shred of scientific support for the doctrine that one sex or the other is the sole custodian of the Essence of Life. Or, that one sex possesses the Power of Generation while the other does not. And yet, even today, there are those (even some professed Thelemites) who persist in espousing this superstitious view.

As advocates of Crowley's concept of scientific religion, we need to be prepared to discard scientific doctrines when they are rendered obsolete, even when such doctrines support our spiritual and social paradigms. We may continue to enjoy and revere our holy books, our historical writings, and our customary rites, because these things have historical, symbolic, spiritual, and even talismanic value to us. But we must not allow ourselves to be bound to interpretations, explanations, and applications of our symbols that are based on outmoded and discredited ideas about nature. The true significance of our great and living symbols extends much deeper than such shallow and transient notions. As I have said before, a true symbol is not merely a cipher. If we actively listen to them, our symbols will continue to speak to us the truth, to the extent that we have the capacity to comprehend it.

Love is the law, love under will.

... In Greek, the word pan means "all," and the Orpheans conceived of Pan as a symbol of the Universal, a personification of Nature; both Pangenetor, "all-begetter," and Panphage, "all-devourer." In this aspect he is portrayed in Tarot Trump XV.

Pan is also said to have seduced the nymph Echo, upon whom he sired Iynx, and the moon goddess Selênê, by transforming himself into a white ram and luring her into the forest. In a note he made in his personal copy of Liber XV, Crowley commented on the statement that the Priestess "should be actually Virgo Intacta or specially dedicated to the service of the Great Order." His comment stated that the Priestess should be sworn to the Great Work "as Artemis to Pan."

Plutarch (Obsolescence of Oracles) relates the story of how, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Tiberius (14-37 e.v.), the passengers of a merchant ship travelling from Greece to Italy heard a loud cry from the Isle of Paxos. The voice called the name of the ship's pilot, Thamus, three times, then instructed him to announce that the Great Pan was dead when the ship approached Palôdes. When he did as the voice had commanded, the passengers of the ship heard a great lamenting of many voices. Christian theologians have cited this story as an example of the triumph of Christianity over Paganism; but the passengers of the ship may simply have heard part of a mystery ritual of the Dying God Tammuz: "Tammuz, Tammuz, Tammuz the all-great is dead." ...

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

The governor of the great state of Texas has designated this day a “Day of Prayer and Fasting.”

Some wag on Facebook has responded by declaring today a “Day of Debauchery and Gluttony.”

Given that we Thelemites have our head above the heavens and our feet below the hells, and making full use of my God-given indecisiveness, I hereby declare this evening an Evening of Prayer, Fasting, Debauchery and Gluttony. I trust you'll all be able to figure this out.

This past fiscal year, we experienced a net increase in overall active membership of about 60 members, representing about a 5% net increase in membership. This counters the drop we experienced over the last couple of years due to changes in policy regarding membership inactivation, and I think it represents an encouraging sign that we can continue to grow and thrive even during interesting times.

The fifth Collect of the Gnostic Mass describes the nature of sainthood in our Church with respect to our concept of the Lord.

    “Lord of life and joy Twisted Evil , that art the might of man, that art the essence of every true god that is upon the surface of the Earth, continuing knowledge from generation unto generation, thou adored of us upon heaths and in woods, on mountains and in caves, openly in the marketplaces and secretly in the chambers of our houses, in temples of gold and ivory and marble as in these other temples of our bodies, we worthily commemorate them worthy that did of old adore thee and manifest thy glory unto men.”

My Brothers and Sisters, you are (in various stages of manifestation) these true gods upon the surface of the Earth. "Deus est Homo." "There is no god but Man." It is our shared and individual essence, continuing knowledge from generation unto generation, that is that secret and most holy Lord of life and joy adored by us and our saints--our Lord in ourselves, whose name is Mystery of Mystery.

Understanding this is the true basis of the Law, and the true foundation of all human rights. Realizing this is the essence of true kingship. Manifesting its glory is the essence of true Sainthood.

How can there be any higher measure of success than to understand and realize ones own divine essence, and to manifest its glory? To accomplish the Great Work? To do your True Will as a god upon Earth? The wealth, status and fame so coveted by some are mere vain baubles in comparison: drugs to soothe a blind ego that cannot perceive, or will not recognize, its own essential divinity.

You partake of the same divine nature as the world's wealthiest plutocrats, the world's most powerful dictators, the world's most beloved celebrities, and the world's most impoverished beggars.

True kingship is realizing this.

He who believes himself to be a slave is in fact, a slave. But there are slaves and slaves. The Beast himself was the prophet and slave of the beauteous one. One can be a slave through passion and devotion, and never flag in the understanding that one is accomplishing one's Will in noble service, as very god of very god. But the slave who serves unwillingly, with resentment in his heart, has turned his back on his own divine nature, his own True Will. No-one can free such a slave but he himself, because he is in fact a slave to his own ignorance, to his own blinded ego.

If we know ourselves each to be elaborations and extensions of the divine, then how can anyone have undue power over us? How can we be dominated by any other creature without our sovereign consent? We can be deprived of our money, our property, our health, our limbs, our loved ones, even our individual lives; but, once we understand our true nature, we can never be deprived of that.

And this makes us rather dangerous.

There have always been, and will always be, a class of slaves who will vainly attempt to palliate their myopic egos by amassing and wallowing in greater and greater pigsties of material ostentation, who will seek to profit—in their own pathetic way—by sowing ignorance and superstition and fear and confusion and guilt and shame among the people, struggling to hide from them the truth of their divine nature. Like the vampires of folklore, their design is to reduce the humble villagers to a state of cowed subservience, that they may be more easily preyed upon.

They thrive on the life-blood of a populace that has been conditioned by deceit and threat to labor and kill for their betters in exchange for toys, spectacle, transient pleasures, and false honor—things that numb their pain of division, without satisfying it—a populace without self-understanding or consciousness of individual Will, a populace that has submitted to voluntary spiritual castration, a populace, as it were, of zombies.

This is why we must promulgate the Law of Do What Thou Wilt: the Law of the Strong, the Joy of the World. This is why we must manifest the glory of the Lord Twisted Evil --by learning and teaching; by reading and writing and speaking; by painting, drawing, carving, and moulding; by song, by dance, by building and by steadfast resistance; with ecstasy and passion and strength; individually--and with our arms linked in fraternity.

Several weeks ago, Sekhet-Maat Lodge in Portland was subjected to an attack by an arsonist. We do not know yet the arsonist's motivation. But we do know that you, Brothers and sisters, came to the Lodge's aid, donating over $2,000, sufficient funds to cover the all repairs in one day after the Lodge put out a request for assistance. Fraternity.

We are attracting attention, Brothers and sisters. Our efforts are being noted by friend and foe alike. Eyes are turning our way.

We live in increasingly interesting times. Prepare yourselves. Understand, realize, and manifest thy Glory.

GOV. PERRY DECLARES AUG. 6 DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING

(by Chris Tomlinson, SignOnSanDiego.com) AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas Gov. Rick Perry has invited the nation’s governors to join him in a prayer day to seek God’s guidance to deal with the problems facing America.

The day for prayer and fasting is planned for Aug. 6 in Houston and is sponsored by the American Family Association, a Christian advocacy group. The organization’s website says the event is intended to be a non-denominational, apolitical, Christian prayer service.

Perry’s invitation comes on the heels of his announcement that he is considering a run for president. …..

Given the trials that beset our nation and world, from the global economic downturn to natural disasters, the lingering danger of terrorism and continued debasement of our culture, I believe it is time to convene the leaders from each of our United States in a day of prayer and fasting, like that described in the book of Joel,” Rolling Eyes Perry said in a statement.

Titled, “The Response, A Call To Prayer for a Nation in Crisis” the event is scheduled to take place at Reliant Stadium. On the website dedicated to the event, organizers said “America is in the midst of a historic crisis.”

We want the presence, power, and person of Christ to fill our nation and turn the hearts of millions to righteousness, peace, and joy in him,” the group’s website gives as a mission statement. “We want to see real change across our nation that only our God can perform.”

In his invitation to the other 49 governors, he urged them to also proclaim Aug. 6 a day to pray for “unity and righteousness.”

We simply want to humbly ask our creator to intervene on behalf of our people and nation, and ask for His blessing and healing power to transform our lives,” Perry said in the letter.

Michigan’s Gov. Rick Snyder has already said he won’t be attending. The Republican governor said his schedule was too busy.
The Secular Coalition for America issued a statement urging governors not to attend the event.

“The last thing our officials should do in times of national struggle is promote a divisive religious event that proposes no real solutions to our country’s real-world problems,” said Sean Faircloth, executive director of the lobbying organization for secular and nontheistic Americans. “We urge all elected officials to reject Governor Perry’s invitation to attend this explicitly Christian platform for theocratic grandstanding that does nothing to offer substantive solutions to our country’s problems.”

In April, when Texas was in the middle of wildfires that burned nearly 3 million acres of the state, Perry issued an official proclamation calling for three “pray for rain days.”

The Hermetic Brotherhood of Light was a Fraternity that descended from the Frates Lucis in the late 18th century (in turn, derived from the German Order of the Golden and Rosy Cross), and was the seed from which Ordo Templi Orientis was created. In addition, The Hermetic Brotherhood of Light was strongly connected with the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor, and may perhaps be one and the same. Carl Kellner and Paschal Beverly Randolph were members. In Theodor Reuss' 1917 O.T.O. Constitution, it states in Article 1, Section 1: Under the style and title: ANCIENT ORDER OF ORIENTAL TEMPLARS, an organization, formerly known as: "The Hermetic Brotherhood of Light

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Welcome to the fifth national conference of the U.S. O.T.O., known for some reason as NOTOCON. Our theme this year, as you know is "Heretics and Kings," a natural and obvious progression from the past themes of "Fraternity," "The Divine," and "Initiation."

This weekend, in keeping with our theme, we will be exploring our relationship as Thelemites to that which likes to think of itself as "mainstream society"; we will have a look at the ideas of heresy and orthodoxy within our own Thelemic culture; we will examine the concepts of leadership and sovereignty in broad and narrow contexts... After my last three addresses I've had presenters come up to me and tell me that I just delivered their presentation. I guess they wanted to make sure their comp was still valid. Anyway, I hope to avoid that this time, so I'll try to keep my remarks fairly brief, and incomprehensible.

According to traditional usages, heretics are those who dissent from religious authority in matters of doctrine; and kings are those who rule as sovereign authorities over their realms, whether large or small. Historically, heretics and kings haven't really gotten along very well, most of the time (and none of them really got along at all well with pirates, but that's really beside the point). Historically, a heretic was always someone who was on the losing side of a religious controversy. Those who were labeled as heretics rarely thought of themselves as such. They usually thought of themselves as the truly orthodox; it was those in power who were the heretics. More recently, though, in a world of relative religious tolerance and the spread of a world-view based on the new priesthood of science, a heretic has come to mean someone who is a rebel against any entrenched orthodoxy, whether that orthodoxy be within the religious community, or the scientific community, or the business community, or the bird watchers community or any other community. Under such conditions, the epithet of heretic has come to be one that may actually be sought after; although it is still just as likely that any heretic, whether so identified by his enemies or by himself, will view himself as a representative of the true and rightful orthodoxy .

Historically, a king was always someone who ruled over lots of other people. The Book of the Law, though, implies a more individualized interpretation of the word: According to Crowley's Commentary, Kings may be seen as those individuals who are capable of understanding themselves, who have controlled the rabble in their own minds in order to do their Wills. On the other hand, a king, regardless of the size, scope, or nature of his realm, can still be a rigid enforcer of a stale, oppressive orthodoxy or a weak, ineffective pretender who allows his realm to be torn apart by rebels... or heretics... intent on establishing their own static, oppressive orthodoxies.

Perhaps there is a middle way. Perhaps it is possible for sovereign, free-thinking individuals, responsible to themselves, the masters of their own thoughts and emotions, to join together in fraternity in order to accomplish things that they could not do as mere individuals. Perhaps such individuals can be fraternally united by a set of ideas and customs without being oppressed by them. Perhaps it is possible for a ruler to govern with both tolerance and firmness. Perhaps it is possible to recognize and uphold freedom of thought and conscience, and still forestall division and fragmentation based on ideological and political differences and disagreements over the interpretation of texts. Perhaps it is possible to allow a body of ideas to evolve in parallel with an expanding understanding of the natural world without abandoning its fundamental, timeless principles. Perhaps it is possible to maintain a diversity of individual opinion, while presenting a unified and coherent face to the world.

I think it might be possible. Not easy, but possible.

I hope that was brief enough. Let me just add a few additional words about some current projects and other matters, and then we can proceed with the fun and frolic of the evening.
First: Local Body Development

You're all aware of the current push for local body development. We've had a policy in place for some time that Lodges are expected to have a dedicated Lodge facility in which to conduct their official events, and many Lodges--and Oases--are making this happen. We're looking for ways to make this easier for them, especially in terms of local revenue. We have completed our application to the IRS for a group tax exemption that would extend USGL's tax exempt coverage to those local bodies who responded to the GTG's recent request for information. If successful, this application would exempt all local dues and donations paid directly to those local bodies from federal taxation. We are also looking at various ways to encourage greater membership participation in local body development. As I've said before, the local bodies are really where the fundamental work of our Grand Lodge gets done: the initiations, the Gnostic Masses, the classes, the building of fraternity. There are, in my opinion, a lot of good reasons for Lodges to have dedicated Lodge facilities, but they all pertain to facilitating and enhancing that fundamental work. We need to keep that in mind as we move forward. If we acquire beautiful buildings, but lose our sense of fraternity in the process, then we will have built our temple on a foundation of sand. Can we have beautiful temples and maintain a strong sense of fraternity and community? Of course we can, but both need continued effort and dedication from all of us. And that doesn't mean just money.
Second: Education Committee

The Education Committee has set up, chaired, and staffed the first subcommittees, which are: the Ceremonial Magick Subcommittee; the Qabalah Subcommittee; the Yoga Subcommittee; the History, Philosophy, Mythology, and Religion Subcommittee; and the Divination, Astral, and Skrying Work Subcommittee. There is still room for new committee members, so, if you are at least a KEW and you think you have some significant expertise in one of more of these areas to contribute, then please talk to Sister KB.
Third: Pastoral Counseling

The Psychology Guild has developed a weekend workshop for Local Body Masters and EGC Clergy on pastoral counseling. The workshop was successfully beta-tested last month in the Bay Area, and plans are now being laid out for scheduling this workshop on a regional basis throughout the U.S., so watch for it. This workshop is coming as "highly recommended" for all existing and aspiring Local Body Masters and EGC clergy, and as "just short of mandatory" for all SGIGs, Grand Tribunal members, and EGC Bishops. Fourth: USGL Library

Our library has now accumulated nearly 1000 titles, largely due to a bequest from Brother David Knouse of Hot Springs, Arkansas, who died last June. I expect the cataloguing of the new books to be completed by the end of next month, and by the end of the year, we should have our mail-order lending system in place. The catalog of available books will be posted on the USGL website, and members of at least V* will be able to apply for borrowing privileges to the Librarian.

Finally: For those of you who never read anything, we had a genuine milestone earlier this year. Brother Bill Heidrick retired from his role as International O.T.O. Treasurer General at the end of April. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Brother Bill Heidrick for 26 years of extraordinary service to O.T.O. in his role as both Grand Treasurer General and International Treasurer General.

Bro. Heidrick's role as IHQ Treasurer General has been assumed by Bro. Vere Chappell, who was our friendly and efficient GTG for seven years, until IHQ swooped down and abducted him from us, carrying him off to its European stronghold. Bro. Vere would actually like to speak to you for a moment, so I will now turn the microphone over to him. Given his current and past offices, and given what you've suspected about us all along, I'm sure you'll be perfectly shocked to learn that he intends to ask us for money. But I think you may agree that it's for a worthy cause.

What if the Apocalypse has already happened? How should we live in a post-Apocalyptic world, when all of the values of the previous one have been destroyed? Aleister Crowley had an answer: we should each live according to our own True Will.

By this he meant that every man and woman must discover his or her own true nature and purpose in this world, and fulfill it. But the guiding principle in living that fulfillment must be love; and not “love” in the sense of mere sentimental affection. Crowley’s philosophy further claims, “Man has the right to love as he will:—when, where, and with whom he will.” Bisexual himself, he formally declared the absolute liberty of consensual sexual expression, with the force of prophetic authority.

In 1904, Crowley received a text as a result of magical invocation: The Book of the Law. The law the book contained may be summed up in these words: “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the law, love under Will.” With the arrival of this new law, Crowley believed the old world order was completely overturned—destroyed by fire, as it were—and a new age dawned. He called his new system Thelema (Greek for “will”), and identified himself with the Great Beast of Revelation. Accordingly, Thelema declares Christianity obsolete, along with all other world religions, even while putting to use their most potent spiritual techniques, symbolism, and mythic narratives.

Thelemites are often practitioners of Magick, understood as the form of occultism developed by Crowley from his training in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and experiences with esoteric religions around the world. His techniques and theories have influenced generations of practitioners of divination, yoga, alchemy, spirit evocation, and astral travel. He was also a pioneer in the modern Western use of entheogens such as mescaline, and his social ideas support the full freedom not only of self-medication, but of self-exploration by such means.

The Order of Oriental Templars, better known as Ordo Templi Orientis or simply O.T.O., is the first religious body to base its work on the Law of Thelema. O.T.O. is essentially a vehicle for organizing and mobilizing under the Law, since we can't expect any sort of deus ex machina to take us to a New Jerusalem. The old social forms are obsolete and oppressive, and humans need social contexts in which to temper and express their individual wills. Crowley introduced the Law of Thelema to O.T.O. in the early decades of the 20th century, but without his leadership, the order went into a dormant period for the thirty years following his death. Starting in the 1970s, surviving members began to reorganize, and growth has been fairly steady ever since. There are now thousands of active members organized in over sixteen different countries worldwide.

O.T.O. includes of two outer “rites” or systems of ceremony, for the purpose of realizing the divine in the human. One is Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica, a church body whose central ritual is a symbolic drama called the Gnostic Mass, intended to cultivate religious ecstasy without moralizing or superstition. Since The Book of the Law affirms that “Every man and every woman is a star,” our church requires priestesses as well as priests. The clergy organize and lead group ceremonies, but do not serve as intermediaries between the individual member and his or her god. The most important form of deity in Thelema is the personal genius, or “Holy Guardian Angel,” which is understood to be unique for each individual. A person baptized in the church affirms: “I will know my own will. I will do my own will. I will rejoice in the will of my god.”

The other rite of O.T.O. is Mysteria Mystica Maxima, a set of graduated initiations using the methods of Freemasonry and the ancient mystery cults. Fraternal temple initiation in person may seem somewhat antiquated—and indeed, the heyday of such work in the United States was the latter half of the 1800s. But mediating technologies deprive us of many of the contacts and sensory channels that previously would have integrated us into important age-old networks of human consciousness. The O.T.O. degrees redress these faults, while developing self-discipline and self-knowledge toward the goals of individual liberty and universal brotherhood.

Another important but still largely unrealized dimension of O.T.O. is the establishment of intentional communities centered on “profess-houses.” Crowley briefly operated such a project—the Abbey of Thelema in Sicily in the 1920s—and late in life he was making plans for another, to be called the Green Lion, which never came to fruition. The creative opportunity to bring such communities into existence is important to the Thelemic movement as a whole, because despite the basic emphasis on the liberty of the individual, we recognize that many of the most admirable and challenging aspects of human existence can only manifest in cooperation with others.

People today intuitively grasp the obsolescence of many aspects of our social system. The reduction of men and women to “consumers” results in profound alienation compensated only by the most superficial of freedoms. The Law of Thelema challenges us all to find a deeper sort of liberty that can empower us to remake society in a world which has already shifted under our feet.

Happy Vernal Equinox! Today in the Northern Hemisphere, it's the first day of Spring, when the sun crosses the Celestial Equator and enters the sign of Aries.

It's a day for mourning the Goddess's consort, the Dying God, who has co-ruled with the Goddess during the autumn and winter months.

It is the first day of the year in the Zoroastrian calendar. It is the feast day of the Anglo-Saxon Goddess Easter, known to the Mesopatamians as Ishtar.

No, that's not Jesus talking, but the God-Man Mithras, upon whose Temple ruins the Vatican was built. Mithras was a solar deity known as The Redeemer. His worship was before and concurrent with that of Jesus, but eventually faded away.

Mithras was Known as the "Good Shepherd" and the "Light of the World," just as was Jesus. Mithras's followers shared ritual communion meals of bread and wine. Mithras was born in a cave, of a virgin, on December 25th. Shepherds attended at his birth.

As the Burning Taper discussed some time ago, many God-Men were born on the Winter Solstice, and many died on the Vernal Solstice. Attis's mother was Cybele, a virgin, known as Queen of Heaven. Further back, we find the Babylonian Goddess Ishtar and her dying/resurrected son/lover Tammuz, born/resurrected at the Winter Solstice, dying at the Spring Equinox.

Even the name Easter comes from the word Ishtar.

The cross is an ancient symbol, pre-dating Christianity, often used to represent a solar deity. Inside a circle, the cross represents the Earth and her four seasons.

In Her Temples in many lands from Egypt to Assyria to Babylon to Crete to India, in Rome and Greece and many Celtic lands, Her Temples had Sacred Priestesses who were also called Prostitutes by those of body denial religions. But some three millennia ago there came monotheists who refused Her Worship preferring instead to be diminished in body and spirit. They called Her, "The Whore of Babylon, who leads men into fornication." They called our sacred sexuality "sin," and cast shame on Her sacred Priestesses. They held up a "virgin" as the ideal that women should imitate instead of the sacred Goddess that they had always held as the most sacred image of Woman. This is essentially the state of things in the modern world.

The two principal deities of ancient Babylon were Baal and Ishtar. Baal was the god of war and the elements and Ishtar the goddess of fertility - both human and agricultural. These two deities have roots going back before Babylon to Nimrod at Babel and to Assyria. Through the ages they were imported into other nations and under different names but always retaining the same basic characteristics. Baal was also called Bel, Baalat, Molech, Merodach, Mars and Jupiter, and was frequently represented as a bull. Ishtar was also called Aphrodite, Astarte, Ashtoreth, Cybele or Sybil, Diana, Europa, Isis, Semiramis and Venus. The two main elements in the worship of Baal were fire and human sacrifice, usually children.

Bro. Fred Milliken has written an excellent piece titled "I Resign."

Though the information presented about Bro. Derek Gordon's ordeal with the Grand Lodge of Arkansas is interesting and enlightening, the real meat to the article is Bro. Fred's summary:

        This is no longer your Grandfather’s Chevrolet... er, Grand Lodge. Freemasonry must stop living in the past as West Virginia and Arkansas are doing. Instead it needs to adapt to the mores of present day society.

        Running a closed society that allows no freedom of expression and muzzles its members is antithetical to Freemasonry of the Enlightenment.

        Operating a society with laws, rules and regulations that conflict with civil law and civil rights is not only not in the spirit of Freemasonry but also blatantly immoral.

        An organization in this day and age, especially a nonprofit volunteer one, cannot realistically force a person against his will to remain a member. It should be the option of any Freemason to simply resign from any Grand Lodge.

        Making up silly and vindictive rules such as prohibiting members from using the Internet or any electronic means to discuss Freemasonry is unbecoming and un-Masonic.

        It’s been almost 50 years since Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights movement transformed America. It is past time that Grand Lodges reflected that change.

        It is painfully evident that Grand Lodges can no longer operate as they have done in the past. This is the 21st century with new ways of looking at different lifestyles and morality. Grand Lodges are now in a public-private partnership yet they refuse to recognize their duty to civil law and their new commitments. Failure of Freemasonry to operate within the framework of present day moral, societal and political civil practice could be very costly to the Craft.

“I resign.” Those were the words of Derek Gordon in a terse certified letter to the Grand Lodge of Arkansas. No long drawn out accusations, no reprimands, no recrimination, just “I resign.”Faced with what he felt was a rigged kangaroo court, Gordon saw he had little other options.

Why subject himself to the humiliation his Grand Lodge was about to heap upon him. He knew in his heart that he did no wrong and remained true to the real spirit of Freemasonry. If one way or the other he was going to go then it would be on his terms not the terms of a tyrannical closed society purging its membership of any dissenters or freethinkers.

The option Gordon took was one the Grand Lodge of Arkansas said was not available.  You cannot resign, they told him, and since you are under charges we will not give you a demit.  Such were the machinations of a power thirsty Grand Lodge with an Ahmadinejad prototype as Grand Master. This Grand Lodge, like a number of others in the United States, felt that it could rule arbitrarily and make up the laws, rules and regulations on the fly to thwart every challenge to their despotic ways. They pushed through a non electronic Masonic communication law on the spur of the moment in order to have an excuse on which to hang their phony charges against Gordon. They refused to reveal specifically what he had done wrong, telling him to come enter the “Lion’s Den” and then we will tell you all about how we are going to screw, blue and tattoo you.






The Grand Lodge of Arkansas rigged the rules so that once they had you under charges there was no way for you to escape, or so they said. This enabled them to rule by fear and keep anybody not toeing the party line on the outside looking in. If you were up on charges, which were often made up bogus violations, then the Grand Lodge gave you two choices, submit to a Masonic trial (predetermined outcome) or fill out a form to self expel yourself, in the process also self blackballing yourself from every other jurisdiction in the United States. It resembles the choice of death by a firing squad or death by the electric chair. Self expulsion is also akin to “tar and feathering” yourself and if you refuse to sign the form or attend your Masonic trial they will try you in absentia. In other words if you don’t tar and feather yourself we will do it for you. This process cannot be inspired by Masonic practice; rather it seems to have been borrowed from the KKK.
 
Gordon’s position was that he was a volunteer not a paid member of staff and therefore he had every right to resign, especially if he felt he was not being treated well. Even President Nixon was allowed to resign under fire.

Many a fellow Mason, responding to the case of Frank Haas and the Grand Lodge of West Virginia, Gate City Lodge and the Grand Lodge of Georgia and most recently Derek Gordon and the Grand Lodge of Arkansas, has repeatedly said that whatever a Grand Lodge decides and whatever it rules it is within its rights and taking the dispute outside of Freemasonry into the civil courts is wrong. These well intentioned Brothers tell us that Freemasonry is a private organization and rules itself as a power unto itself and that bringing the profane into adjudication is both Masonically illegal and immoral.

That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Most Grand Lodges today are public corporations.  It would be very foolish in today’s world not to be. The limited liability and the tax advantages are just too great for a multimillion dollar organization like Freemasonry to pass up. But to attain these advantages a company or organization must sign onto the articles of incorporation and the corporate and nonprofit laws,  – secular, civil rules that supersede any Masonic traditions or by-laws, rules and regulations of Grand Lodges. This was reported in an earlier Beehive column that seemed to generate little comment or attention.

Well let’s take the common practice of Grand Masters to rule and govern by edict when the Grand Lodge is not in Session.  Most Grand Lodge by-laws stipulate that the Grand Master rules in absentia. This is a Masonic tradition and how most Grand Lodges have been governed for centuries. However, in most cases, depending on the state, this is not legally correct. Most state’s corporation rules state that the corporation is governed by a Board of Directors when the Grand Lodge is not in sessionCorporate rules supersede any organization’s by-laws. This means that the Grand Master cannot decide matters at all, he must refer all business over to the Board.

Thus when a Grand Master sandbags a Brother by showing up at his Lodge under false pretenses and then expelling him by edict, that action may be blatantly illegal.  Likewise, when a Grand Master visits a Lodge and promptly pulls its charter and closes it down, that too may be illegal. In other areas of corporate law it may also be illegal to file vague charges against a volunteer or employee without specifically informing the accused of exactly the offense that was violated and in what manner. Some Grand Masters pay little or no attention to the civil laws which they are required to adhere to. If more Masons knew of this situation perhaps they would call them on it.

So when a Grand Lodge becomes a corporation it agrees to abide by the rules and regulations of incorporation and the corporate and nonprofit civil laws that accompany them, first and foremost, over ruling any previously held positions when in conflictFurthermore, one can no longer say that Freemasonry is a private organization or that it should not operate in the civil public domain.  By becoming a public corporation and operating under the rules of a public corporation it has the same status as General Motors and under the present administration could be deemed too big to fail and therefore, if in trouble, could be taken over by the state. Lastly as a public corporation its membership and the entire public community has the right to look at its tax, revenues and payroll records as well as its charitable contributions as filed with the government.

THE BIGGEST THING FREEMASONS TODAY NEED TO FACE IS THAT FREEMASONRY IS NO LONGER A PRIVATE SOCIETY.

Let’s take a look at what Arkansas expects of its nonprofit and volunteer organizations.

The state of Arkansas has published guidelines for its nonprofit and volunteer organizations. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe explains what his state has put in place.

Discrimination

Title VII of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1991 prohibits
employers of fifteen (15) employees or more, whether for-profit
or nonprofit, from discriminating on the basis of race, color,
religion, sex, or national origin.37 The Age Discrimination in
Employment Act of 196738 and the Americans with Disabilities
Act of 199039 prohibit discrimination based on age and disability.
Although state civil rights laws vary, the Arkansas Civil
Rights Act of 1993 also prohibits discrimination and applies to
employers of nine (9) or more.40
Nevertheless, a nonprofit should implement
non-discriminatory practices and procedures even if it has
few “employees” who may sue for discrimination. The most
obvious reason is that it is the right thing to do; a more practical
consideration is that the organization may eventually grow into
civil rights law coverage.
One of the most effective ways to avoid discrimination
and the appearance of discrimination is to make sure that the
organization reflects the diversity of the community served.
Directors, officers, volunteers and employees should reflect
diversity of, for example, age, race, sex, religion, national origin
and disability. Many groups also feel the need for other types of
diversity, such as geographic and socio-economic.

According to the 2000 census Arkansas’ population is 15.7% African American. How does the Grand Lodge of Arkansas reflect this diversity?  Is 15.7 % of its membership African American?, 10%?, 5%?, 1%?, any at all? Does anyone know of at least one African American that belongs to the Grand Lodge of Arkansas?

Now let’s take a look at what the state of Arkansas demands of its nonprofit corporations

“THE ARKANSAS NONPROFIT CORPORATION ACT OF 1993.”

AR LEGIS 1147 (1993)
SECTION 620. Resignation

(a) A member may resign at any time.
(b) The resignation of a member does not relieve the member from any
obligations the member may have to the corporation as a result of
obligations incurred or commitments made prior to resignation.
SECTION 621. Termination, Expulsion And Suspension
(a) No member of a public benefit or mutual benefit corporation may be
expelled or suspended, and no membership or memberships in such
corporations may be terminated or suspended except pursuant to a procedure
that is fair and reasonable and is carried out in good faith.
(b) A procedure is fair and reasonable when either:
(1) the articles or bylaws set forth a procedure that provides:
(i) not less than fifteen days prior written notice of the expulsion,
suspension or termination and the reasons therefore; and
(ii) an opportunity for the member to be heard, orally or in writing, not
less than five days before the effective date of the expulsion, suspension
or termination by a person or persons authorized to decide that the
proposed expulsion, termination or suspension not take place; or
(2) it is fair and reasonable taking into consideration all of the relevant
facts and circumstances.
(c) Any written notice given by mail must be given by first-class or
certified mail sent to the last address of the member shown on the
corporation’s records.
(d) Any proceeding challenging an expulsion, suspension or termination,
including a proceeding in which defective notice is alleged, must be
commenced within one year after the effective date of the expulsion,
suspension or termination.
(e) A member who has been expelled or suspended may be liable to the
corporation for dues, assessments or fees as a result of obligations
incurred or commitments made prior to expulsion or suspension.

Arkansas Nonprofit Corporation Act


There are two versions of the Arkansas Nonprofit Corporation Act, (“ANPCA”), one passed in 1963, and one passed in 1993. Corporations created prior to 1993 are subject to the 1963 Act, unless they choose to subject themselves to the 1993 Act. Any organizations incorporated after 1993 are subject to the 1993 Act. – Arkansas Attorney General’s Office





So the Grand Lodge of Arkansas may be grandfathered out of many of these requirements as it was incorporated in 1846.  Yet many Arkansas nonprofit corporations realizing that the post civil rights era of legislation has seen many changes drastically transforming society have signed onto the 1993 act voluntarily. Many also have done so because the new Act protects the interest of members and ensures against deception and mistreatment. For some it becomes not what you can get away with but rather what is the spirit of the times and how can I join in to be a part of it.  Sadly it seems that the Grand Lodge of Arkansas would rather live in the Civil War era and operate under the rules of a bygone era. How Masonic is that?

We say that Freemasonry has its own law yet we admonish all within the Craft to uphold the civil government and obey the civil statutes.  Does that mean that Freemasonry can knowingly try to operate with Masonic Law that is in direct conflict with Civil Law?


Let’s review what we have learned from this event.

Finally let us dispense with the notion that holding Freemasonry accountable in civil court is against Masonic moral law.  It is Grand Lodges who took themselves out of staying a purely private organization and into the civil world of corporate non-profits. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.  And you can’t talk out of both sides of your mouth.  If you want the benefits of a nonprofit corporation than abide by the civil laws that go with it and govern your Grand Lodge in the spirit of the law as it was intended.

The Beehive urges every Freemason in the U.S.A. to investigate the process its Grand Lodge is using and to educate himself on how it operates, to use the Freedom of Information Act when needed and to hold his Grand Lodge, a nonprofit corporation, accountable in civil court when necessary.







Derek Gordon is not going to self expel himself, nor is he going to attend his Masonic trial. Attempts by the Grand Lodge of Arkansas to redefine what he has done is futile. HE HAS RESIGNED – NOT SELF EXPELLED HIMSELF. To the Grand Lodge of Arkansas, accept the resignation of Derek Gordon and put an end to your foolishness.

This is not the Civil War era, this is the Information Age and we are all watching you.

Winter Solstice holidays have been with us for thousands of years, begun at the dawn of agriculture among people who depended upon the return of the sun. Many of these holidays celebrate light literally, but for many, there is also the symbolic meaning of light ~ Wisdom.

    
For people all over the world, these holidays must remind us that darkness must yield to light. The sun does come back, and spring will follow winter. We can help the process, as our ancestors thought they did, by loving each other, and each of us living our life as a candle dispersing the darkness.






Hanukkah

A Jewish festival celebrated at this time of year, Hanukkah started out as a minor holiday focused on an historic event, the rededicating of a temple after driving out the Greek invaders who had desecrated it. According to the accompanying legend, there was only enough sacred oil in the temple to burn for one night, but it miraculously burned for eight days, until new oil could be brought in.
 
American Jews have taken this holiday to new heights. It is difficult to live in the shadow of America’s enormously appealing Christmas festival, but Hanukkah has met the challenge. In an eight-day celebration with gifts given to the household children each of the eight days, lighting a new candle each night is a significant part of the celebration. "Do not curse the darkness; light a candle in the world." The light, of course, represents knowledge and wisdom.

Hanukkah foods are full of symbolism. The favorite potato pancake is a golden symbol of the sun, and the oil in which it fries is a reminder of the sacred oil that gave its all for the temple. No, the potato pancake is not an ancient food; the potato came form Peru and was not a part of the European diet until the 18th century or later.

Hannukah is celebrated around the world for eight days and nights, beginning on the 25th day of the month of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and ending on the second day of the Hebrew month of Tevet. In 2015, Hannukah begins on the evening of December 6 and ends on December 14.

Thoughts and meditations about Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. As I understand, it has its origins in a battle that liberated Jerusalem and the Temple there around 167 B.C. When the elders went to light the Temple's lamp, there was only enough oil for one day yet the lamp burned for eight days, this miracle became known as the "Festival of Light" or Hanukkah, lasting eight days.

While meditating on this miracle two thoughts came to me. One, on a community or global level this festival could symbolize the ending of the fear that there is not enough. When the elders came upon the lamp there was only a small amount of oil, only enough for one day. Yet this small amount of oil burned brightly in the temple for eight days, providing light for all those who entered. Let us light such lights in our communities and in our world, symbolizing that there is enough and we will share it with all.

And on a personal level this miracle of light speaks to us also. It asks us to bring the light to the dark places in ourselves and in our world even when we think we cannot. It asks us to continue to shine when there seems not enough. This miracle speaks of a great faith and of our steadfastness in a higher purpose.

Let us all be a part of this Festival of Light sharing the light in relevant and thoughtful ways, and in doing this we enter the realm of miracles.

Christmas

Many of us think that we have always celebrated our Solstice holiday, Christmas, in the way we do today ~ with a massive show of light. We illuminate Christmas trees, decorate our houses and gardens with strings of light, burn candles throughout our homes and logs in our fireplaces, and light up our city streets.

What started as a holy mass in Europe, probably at the time assigned to the birth of Jesus (probably April) was moved back to the Winter Solstice by church fathers to serve several needs. The early church was in competition with the Pagan holiday of the Romans, the Saturnalia, which still exists in our New Year celebrations featuring Father Time ~ Saturn.

They were also in hot competition with the Mithra Cult, a spinoff of Zorastrianism, which was a favorite of Roman soldiers. The Mithra Cult was devoted to worship of the sun, which comes down to us today in the Christian Sabbath day ~ Sunday.

During the Dark Ages, as northern Europe’s pagans were converted en masse to Christianity, the church found it difficult to stamp out pagan practices that were dear to the new converts. The many gods and goddesses were converted to saints to whom a good Christian could pray, and even the most primitive totemic practices were absorbed into the new Christmas festival. The Germanic tribes worshipped the evergreen green ~ a symbol of eternal life ~ and the Druids, of what would later be France and England, revered the mistletoe, an oak parasite associated with fertility. We still believe it is lucky to kiss under some mistletoe.

The Yule Log, the great log, making a brilliant fire in the hearth of the local lord, had its roots in another Druid custom: rolling a flaming wheel down a hill on Winter Solstice night, to show the sun how to come back. This flaming wheel ceremony is still found in remote parts of Europe.

Now, what about the symbolic significance of light? The more sophisticated worshippers in the past always recognized that light is associated with wisdom. Being "in the dark" of living in darkness has always meant ignorance and the twin of ignorance, fear. Being illuminated or having a luminous soul means understanding the true meaning of life. Part of the Christian lore of light at this darkest time of year has always meant living in God’s light.

The traditional foods of Christmas also have great symbolic meaning. The fruitcake originated during the Crusades when the European soldiers sent home the wonderful dried fruits of the Muslim East. The custom of putting "sugar plum" in the stockings of good children also dates from the Crusades.

Amidst the joyful traditions and the hustle and bustle of Christmas, I have learned to look inward. Seeing Christmas as an inner experience, as an inner birth. It is a miracle that took place long ago, and one that is repeated again and again in our hearts and minds, as we awaken to the Christ spirit within us. This divine spirit once recognized is a light that guides, a life which revitalizes and a love which blesses. May the inner light, life and love of Christmas be with you now and always.

Christmas in the southern hemisphere

The heat of early summer impacts the way Australians celebrate Christmas and how northern hemisphere Christmas traditions are followed there. In the weeks leading up to Christmas houses are decorated, greetings cards sent out, carols sung, Christmas trees installed in homes, schools and public places, and children delight in anticipating a visit from Santa Claus.

On Christmas Day family and friends gather to exchange gifts and enjoy special Christmas food. Many Australians spend Christmas out of doors, going to the beach for the day or heading to campgrounds for a longer break over the holiday period. It has become traditional for international visitors who are in Sydney at Christmastime to go to Bondi Beach, where up to 40,000 people visit on Christmas Day.

Because the earth is oriented to the north pole star, the symbolism of the returning light applies to both the northern and southern hemispheres.

 Global Celebrations

The Christian or American way of celebrating Christmas has become so attractive around the world that many who are not Christian have taken it up.

The Japanese have adopted Christmas, complete with trees, lights, gifts, and family celebrations. So have many of the educated middle-class Indians in the subcontinent. Before the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the Christmas tree was becoming a common feature of the westernized community.

In Europe, Christmas celebrations combine the older and newer traditions. In the northern countries, where the Winter Solstice brings long dark nights with it, light is an essential element in keeping people from winter depression. One of the great differences between Europe and the old Soviet Union during the Cold War was the contrast between Helsinki and Leningrad. Christian Finland celebrated the Christmas season with a riot of lights everywhere, while Marxist Leningrad was drab and dark. This has changed since the Berlin Wall came down.

The Russians and others with traditions from the Eastern Orthodox Christianity celebrate Christmas on January 6, and Father Frost substitutes for Santa Claus. Gifts and festive foods are an important part of these celebrations.

In Italy there is a charming custom for Christmas Eve ~ a feast that features seven varieties of fish. Evidently Christmas Eve was a fast day in Medieval Europe, on which no meat should be eaten. Meat was for Christmas Day itself. The fish have another significance: a reminder that Jesus was a fisher of souls ~ and that the sign of the fish was an early Christian symbol for identifying other Christians.
 
Kwanzaa

This new holiday has grown in popularity among the ethnically aware African-American community. The holiday is not attempting to co-opt Christmas, which is overwhelming in this American culture, but is following the lead of Hanukkah in providing an ethnically meaningful celebration of light.

Like Hanukkah, Kwanzaa is a one-week celebration that features light (candles) and gifts, and the harvest foods of Africa. The holiday is an opportunity to focus on moral values that have their origins in African village tradition. First celebrated in 1966, every year since then Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26 through January 1. Each day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. The holiday concludes with a community feast featuring traditional African food, ceremonies honoring the ancestors, assessing the old year and committing to the new year, performances, music and dancing. This is one more festival that Americans can enjoy at this season of darkness.
 
Diwali

Hindus in India, and all over the world, celebrate Diwali (or Deepawali), a festival of lights that is as big as Christmas is for Christians. The festival commemorates the destruction of the evil king Ravana by the good king Rama, who then returned to his kingdom in Ayodhya, to be welcomed by all the people, who light up their homes with candles.

The Diwali Festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Besides Hinduism, it is considered a significant festival to Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains.
      
Santa Lucia Day

Celebrated on December 13, Santa Lucia Day is an important prequel to Christmas in many parts of the world.
The Feast of Santa Lucia, St. Lucy, is observed in Sweden as well as in Italy and Croatia.  Santa Lucia Day is also an international holiday, celebrated not only in Scandinavia, but also in Italy and France in the rites of the church.

The Lucia tradition can be traced back both to Saint Lucia of Syracuse, the martyr who died in 304, and beyond that to the Swedish legend of Lucia as Adam’s first wife. It is said that she consorted with the devil and that her children were invisible infernals. Thus the name Lucia may be associated with both lux (light) and Lucifer (Satan).

The present custom appears to be a blend of traditions. In the old almanac, Lucia Night was the longest of the year. It was a dangerous night when supernatural beings were abroad and all animals could speak. By morning, the livestock needed extra feed. People, too, needed extra nourishment and were urged to eat seven or nine hearty breakfasts. This kind of feasting presaged the Christmas fast, which began on Lucia Day.

Throughout Sweden, the festival of Santa Lucia begins before dawn. The eldest daughter in each household, dressed in a long white gown tied with a red sash, and wearing a crown of lingonberry leaves in which are set seven lighted candles, comes to her sleeping parents. The procession includes her sisters and brothers also dressed in white, holding lighted candles, and singing of the light and joy of Christmas. Awakened by the lights and the singing, the parents arise and eat the served breakfast, thus ushering in the Christmas season.

Scandinavian tradition holds that in Värmland, Sweden, a white-clad maiden, wearing a crown of burning candles, brought food to the starving villagers on the shores of Lake Vänern. It is unknown how long ago the tradition began, but it was so far back that the festival of Santa Lucia was marked by a notch on the primitive "primstav" (calendar stick), the precursor of the calendar.

From its beginnings in Värmland, the customs in honor of Santa Lucia have spread throughout Sweden, and more recently to the rest of Scandinavia. Today the festival is celebrated in schools, hospitals, businesses, and towns, each of which has its own Lucia and festivities to mark the beginning of Christmas.

In Italy, torchlight processions and bonfires mark her day, and bowls of a cooked wheat porridge known as cuccia are eaten because, during a famine, the people of Syracuse invoked St. Lucia, who interceded by sending a ship laden with grain.
Lucia is an ancient mythical figure with an abiding role as a bearer of light in the dark Swedish winters. The many Lucia songs all have the same theme:

In places unreached by sun, the shadows brood
Into our dark house she comes, bearing lighted candles,
Saint Lucia, Saint Lucia.
 
    

  Lunar New Year

Not very long after Winter Solstice is the celebration among Chinese everywhere of the New Year. Again, this is a festival of light, with fireworks and lanterns, visits and gifts. The moon plays the major light role here, with foods that are shaped like the full moon (scallops, golden round dumplings, anything round) and money wrapped in red or gold paper. Courting good luck is the center of all customs surrounding the new year. Chinese New Year, or the lunar new year, is observed each year at the (first) new moon in Aquarius.

Chinese New Year celebrations take place everywhere that the Chinese live in their diaspora around the world. Vietnamese, Chinese, Malaysian Chinese, and Indonesian Chinese celebrate in the same way.
 
Zoroastrian Solstice Celebration

In Iran, which today is a predominantly Muslim and Shiite country, the Muslims never succeeded in stamping out all the practices of the country’s ancient religion, Zoroastrianism. Witness to this is the Persian New Year Nowrooz, celebrated on March 21. This 13-day celebration of nature, gifts, special foods, and the visiting of friends and relatives, was frowned on by the late Ayatollah Khomeini as "un-Islamic." Indeed it is, but Iranians refused to give it up.

A lesser-known Zoroastrian holiday is the celebration of the Winter Solstice. On December 21, when snow blankets much of Iran, Persians sit around low tables covered by quilts with a charcoal brazier underneath.

Religions and their symbols have a way of changing over time. Unlike the Japanese, whose art reflects their love for all seasons of the year, Persian art totally denies winter. Imagine summer in winter.

Zoroastrian festivals always centered on the Creator’s blessings: plants, animals, air, earth, fire, and water. Since this religion’s origins were centered on the agricultural cycle (about 1200 BC), foods were always featured in festivals … in the Prophet Zoroaster’s time, a winter solstice festival would have been like those seen in pockets of northern Europe; celebrating fire and remembering that the sun will return.

The Festival of Lights (French: Fête des lumières) in Lyon, France expresses gratitude toward Mary, mother of Jesus around December 8th of each year.[2] This uniquely Lyonnaise tradition dictates that every house place candles along the outsides of all the windows to produce a spectacular effect throughout the streets. The festival includes other activities based on light and usually lasts four days, with the peak of activity occurring on the 8th. The two main focal points of activity are typically the Basilica of Fourvière which is lit up in different colours, and the Place des Terreaux, which hosts a different light show each year.[3][4][5][6][7]

HistorySpared from plague

The origins of the festival date to 1643 when Lyon was struck by plague. On September 8, 1643 the municipal councillors (échevins) promised to pay tribute to Mary if the town was spared. Ever since, a solemn procession makes its way to the Basilica of Fourvière on 8 December (the feast of the Immaculate Conception) to light candles and give offerings in the name of Mary. In part, the event thus commemorates the day Lyon was consecrated to the Virgin Mary.[8]

Inauguration of a statue

In 1852, it became a popular festival when a statue of the Virgin Mary was erected next to the Basilica, overlooking the city.[2] Now a focal point of the festival, the statue was created by the renowned sculptor Joseph-Hugues Fabisch and was sponsored by several notable Lyonnais Catholics. It was then accepted by Maurice Cardinal de Bonald in 1850. The inauguration of the statue was due to take place on September 8, 1852, the day of celebration of the Nativity of the Virgin. However, the flooding of the Saône prevented the statue from being ready. The archbishop, with the agreement of a committee of lay people, therefore chose to move the date back to the 8 December.[2]

By 1852 in Lyon, December 8 had already been a celebration for the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin.[2] Leading up to the inauguration, everything was in place for the festivities: The statue was lit up with flares, fireworks were readied for launching from the top of Fourvière Hill and marching bands were set to play in the streets. The prominent Catholics of the time suggested lighting up the façades of their homes as was traditionally done for major events such as royal processions and military victories.

However, on the morning of the big day, a storm struck Lyon.[2] The master of ceremonies hastily decided to cancel everything and to push back the celebrations once more to the following Sunday. In the end the skies cleared and the people of Lyon, who had been eagerly anticipating the event, spontaneously lit up their windows, descended into the streets[2] and lit flares to illuminate the new statue and the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Fourvière, later superseded by the Basilica. The people sang songs and cried "Vive Marie!" until late in the night. This celebration was then repeated from year to year.[2]

Thus, tradition now dictates that every family in Lyon keep, along with its Christmas decorations, a collection of stained or clear glass in which candles are burnt on windowsills on 8 December. These stout, fluted candles can be found in shops towards the end of November.[9]

Nowadays, the city council puts on professionally run performances. The people of Lyon's participation remains strong as evidenced by numerous façades lit up in the traditional way and by the throngs of people wandering the streets on 8 December.[10]

Historians and sociologists[[i]who?[/i]] note the rather misinformed notions that the people of Lyon have concerning the celebration's origins: confusion over the thanks given to Mary, as well as the dates involved, leads people to think the celebration commemorates the establishment of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière or a wish granted after a plague supposedly struck in the 19th century.

Nowadays, the festival draws 3 to 4 million people each year.

Changes in 2015 and 2016

In 2015, the festival was scaled back,[11] owing to the nationwide state of emergency banning large assemblies in the wake of the November 13 attacks in Paris.[12] The festival was limited to the traditional lumignon candles and an installation which paid tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks, whose first names were displayed over the buildings of the quays.[13]

Because of the continuing risk of attacks, the 2016 edition of the festival will take place in a smaller area than usual and will last for three days instead of four. Security inspections will be conducted at entrances to the event.[14]

Attirant un nombre considérable de visiteurs, cet événement possède aujourd’hui une renommée qui dépasse nos frontières. Cette année, une poignée d’étudiantes a fait le pari audacieux de le rendre accessible à tous. Focus sur une belle initiative!



Un projet ambitieux en faveur du handicap


C’est un groupe de 7 étudiantes en journalisme à l’ISCPA de Lyon qui est à l’initiative de ce projet. Leur objectif? Aborder la thématique du handicap de manière positive avec originalité et dynamisme.

Handilum est le résultat d’un constat simple: peu d’actions en faveur du handicap sont mises en place pour la Fête des Lumières, ou du moins elles ne sont pas assez visibles.

«C’est en observant les participants de la Fête des Lumières que nous nous sommes aperçues à quel point il était rare de voir des personnes en situation de handicap.» Alexandra Pacrot, Porte-parole du groupe.

Avec travail et imagination ce qui était jusqu’à présent une idée est devenu réalité.
 
Handilum pour une meilleure accessibilité


L’enjeu principal d’Handilum est de rendre la Fête des Lumières accessible à tous.

Comment? En communiquant des informations utiles pour guider les personnes en situation de handicap. A travers une carte interactive, les utilisateurs pourront visualiser les meilleurs endroits où se rendre. Seront également indiqués les plus beaux points de vue, accompagnés de photos, ainsi que les spots musicaux incontournables.

En plus de cette carte interactive, le hashtag #Handilum permettra d’avoir, en temps réel, tous les conseils des étudiantes et des participants avec, par exemple, les endroits à éviter.

«On pourra nous interpeller sur notre compte Twitter pour nous donner des informations. Nous serons actives sur ce réseau social dans le but de donner des conseils pour aider au mieux les personnes en situation de handicap.» Alexandra Pacrot, Porte-parole du groupe.

Vous pourrez donc être à la fois guidés et guides.

Enfin, avec la collaboration de plusieurs associations lyonnaises, une immersion aura lieu chaque soir. Elle abordera sous un angle nouveau un handicap différent. Au programme? La cécité, la surdité et la motricité seront des thèmes abordés.

This Collect proclaims our historical current throughout its various phases. The italicized names represent the main thread of the current. These men were the keepers of the sacred flame, whether they knew it (or desired it) or not. In a personal sense, this collect represents the acknowledgment of our own magical currents, our own past lives, ancestors, teachers and heroes.

The brief portraits contained in the linked files are presented as an introduction to the lives, personalities and works of the saints of the Gnostic Catholic Church. They are not intended as detailed biographies. Some of the saints are too obscure to provide us with more than brief speculative sketches, and the biographies of others (such as Paracelsus , Bacon , Goethe , Wagner , Nietzsche , Gauguin , Burton and Crowley ) occupy volumes. The emphasis herein has been placed on the significance of each saint to the transmission and development of the Thelemic Gnosis: the significance of some saints is a result of their works; of others, their life stories. In all cases, a list of the references used to prepare these portraits has been furnished for those who wish to investigate the saints more fully.

Sainthood, in the context of Thelema, should not be confused with common notions or conventional western theological conceptions regarding sainthood. There are several distinct notions of sainthood in Crowley's writings. In Liber Astarte, Crowley gives an implicit definition of a Saint as one who has perfected his or her devotion to his or her deity. As examples, he gives Saint Francis of Assisi, Sri Sabhapaty Swami, Abdullah Haji Shirazi and Saint Ignatius Loyola. In Liber 418, the Vision and the Voice, particularly in the 12th Æthyr, Crowley relates Sainthood specifically to the degree of Magister Templi; the Saint is one who has perfected his devotion to Babalon (Binah).

While not actually mentioning Sainthood, The Book of Lies, Liber Aleph, and The Heart of the Master all provide lists of those considered by Crowley to have served as Great World Initiators, Magistri Templi and Magi of the Great White Brotherhood of the Silver Star, sent to enlighten civilization and initiate historic periods. Chapter 7 of The Book of Lies gives the following list of those identified as Magistri Templi: Lao-tzu , Siddhartha , Krishna , Tahuti , Mosheh , Dionysus and Mahmud . Chapters 68-74 of Liber Aleph give this list of Magi: Lao-tze , Gautama , Krishna , Dionysus , Tahuti , Mosheh and Mohammed . The Heart of the Master, in the section titled "The Initiation," gives these: Fu-Hsi, Lao-Tze , Gautama , Zerdusht (Zarathustra), Pythagoras , Dionysus , Osiris , Apollon ( Apollonius of Tyana ), Plotinus, Jacobus Burgundis Molensis , Mohammed , Sir Edward Kelly and Christian Rosenkreutz . Helena Petrovna Blavatsky is also identified as a Sister of the Great White Brotherhood.

The Fifth Collect in Part V of Liber XV, the Gnostic Mass, defines the Saints as those who have adored the "Lord of Life and Joy," which is "the might of man" and "the essence of every true god that is upon the surface of the Earth," and who have manifested the glory of this Lord/might/essence unto men. This definition is a somewhat broader one than that set forth in The Vision and the Voice. Thus, while the list begins with a roster of the Magi, similar to the lists provided in The Book of Lies, Liber Aleph, and The Heart of the Master, it continues with a list of solar-phallic gods and mythical heroes, followed by a list of poets, Gnostics, figures from the Grail mythos, medieval conquerors, reformers and opponents of Papal oppression, Alchemists, Mystics, Magicians and Rosicrucians, and those associated with the founding of the O.T.O. and E.G.C. A very similar list, identifying the ancient and modern "Chiefs" of the O.T.O., is set forth in Book 52, Manifesto of the O.T.O.
 

The list contains 22 italicized names, and (excluding the recently-added William Blake) 70 names total. The conspicuous lack of women's names in this list has resulted in considerable controversy. The use of the words "sons" and "paternal" in the closing of this Collect is a clear indication that the lack of female names in this list was not an oversight on Crowley's part, and that he intended this list to be a list of men. The reason for this is not certain, though it has been the topic of considerable speculation. There is some evidence that O.T.O. policy at the time Liber XV was written forbade the divulging of the names of female members (see Book 52, Manifesto of the O.T.O. , where the list of ancient and modern "Chiefs" of the O.T.O. concludes with the statement, "The names of women members are nver divulged."). Some believe that the invocation of the Saints of Liber XV was intended to inform the office of the Priest in his role as a male adorant of the Priestess in her role as Goddess incarnate.

In his address to the Women's Conference in 1996 (see The Magical Link, Fall 1997 e.v.), the Patriarch Hymenaeus Beta described the Gnostic Mass as a "celebration of the sexual polarities and their cosmic and natural interplay" from a male perspective, having been written by a man. With regard to the list of Saints, he said, "It is a list of the small handful of men and man-gods who, in the opinion of the author of the Mass, understood the divinity of woman. [...]

Someday, perhaps not soon, but who knows, a woman adept of the Sovereign Sanctuary will manifest the genius to compose a Mass in which the female takes the more active role, and the male the more passive (as with siva and sakti in Hinduism) -- in which the Deacon, speaking for the Priestess, can claim communion with the women in history that have perceived the divinity of man."

Today it has been confirmed that Sky 1’s insight into Freemasonry, Inside the Freemasons will begin on Monday 17th April.



Meeting of Grand Lodge in the Grand Temple at Freemasons Hall Exclusive Access to Freemasonry

To mark its 300th anniversaryUnited Grand Lodge of England granted unprecedented access to Emporium Productions. The result is Inside the Freemasons.

The series was commissioned as a four-parter but it was later agreed to extend it to five episodes.

Inside the Freemasons

Emma Read of Emporium Productions says that she ‘found the fun’ in Freemasonry, as well as uncovering its secrets.

“We told a story of 21st century men and why they joined, what they get out of it, and why they would want to join something where they have to learn all these rituals perfectly and dress up in aprons and gloves,”




The show features stories from across England and Wales, including the consecration of a new Lodge in Cardiff. It features people from all walks of life, from former servicemen in the North-West to a biker in Newcastle.

The show is being distributed by Hat Trick International. Because of the unprecedented levels of access and intrigue that surrounds the Freemasonry, it is expected to attract a global audience.

The show is being distributed by Hat Trick International. Director of sales Sarah Tong says that because of the unprecedented access and the intrigue that surrounds Freemasonry, she expects it to attract an international audience.

“People will think they know what a Freemason is – this sort of secret society – so they’ll watch thinking it’s all very peculiar and strange, and that’s why it will sell,” she explains.




Freemasonry has members across the world, including in the US, which will give the show traction there. Hat Trick is also targeting Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavian and Europe.
