COMMENT L'EGLISE CATHOLIQUE CONVERTIT LES MUSULMANS AU DOGME CATHOLIQUE  - HOW THE CATHOLIC CHURCH CONVERT THE MUSLIM REFUGEES TO THE CATHOLIC DOGMA

The same ruse used for the migrants, using human rights of religious freedom.

POPE FRANCIS MEETS WITH WORLD CONGRESS FOR THE PASTORAL CARE OF MIGRANTS

...However, when a person wants to convert to the Catholic Church this is a human right of religious freedom....

...Pope Francis invoked the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph...

...“The Church promotes pastoral plans for the evangelization and support of migrants throughout their journey from their country of origin, through countries of transit, to the receiving countries. She gives particular attention to meeting the spiritual needs of migrants through catechesis, liturgy and the celebration of the Sacraments.”...

AMERICA A BRITISH COLONY UNDER THE ROMAN EMPIRE

They lie to us, since the beginning, that we have constitutional rights and that the church and the church are two separate entity. Wrong.

VIDEO : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p-q-TgBOWo

What are the three city states and do they rule the world?

The flag in Washington's District of Columbia has 3 red stars, each symbolizing a city state within the three city empire. The three city empire consists of Washington D.C., London, and Vatican City. London is the corporate center of the three city states and controls the world economically. Washington's District of Columbia city state is in charge of the military, and the Vatican offers spiritual guidance. The constitution of the district of Columbia operates under a tyrannical roman law known as lex fori, which in no way resembles the U.S. constitution.

When congress passed the act of 1871, it created a separate corporate government for the District of Columbia. This allowed the District of Columbia to operate as a corporation outside the constitution.

If you take a moment to study some signed treaties and charters between the United States and Britain, you will find that the United States has always been a British crowned Colony. In 1606, King James (yes, the King James who revised the bible) signed the charter of Virginia. The charter granted Americas British forefathers a license to settle and colonize America. The charter also guaranteed future kings and queens of England would have sovereign authority over all citizens and colonized land in America.

In 1783, the Paris peace treaty was signed. This treaty identifies the King of England as the prince of the United States contradicting the belief that America won the war of independence. And although King George III of England gave up most claims over his American colonies, he kept his right to continue receiving payments for his business ventures of colonizing America. If America won the war of independence, why would the agree to pay reparations to the king.

When the 13th amendment to the constitution was passed, the U.S. president was made subservient to the King of England. The 13th Amendment (the title of nobility amendment) forbids U.S. officials from using royal titles like king, or prince. For some strange reason though, the 13th amendment which was ratified in 1810 no longer appears in current copies of the U.S. constitution.

The war of independence against the British bankrupted America and turned its citizens into debt slaves of the king. In 1812, the British torched and burned the white house and all U.S. government buildings to the ground, destroying many ratification records of the U.S. constitution.

Then, nearly a century later, a corrupt U.S. congress committed the biggest theft in world history. They passed Paul Warburgs federal reserve act of 1913, handing over Americas gold and silver reserves (and total control of Americas economy) to the federal reserve bank. Most Americans still believe the FED is owned by the government, but it is not. The FED is a privately owned banking system whose majority class A shareholders include the Rothschild's, Warburgs, J.P. Morgan, the Rockefeller's and the Lehman brothers.

Most U.S. citizens believe the United States is a country and the president is its leader, but the U.S. is not a country, it is a corporation, and the president is not our leader, he is the president of the corporation of the U.S. The president, along his elected officials work for the corporation, not for the American People.

So, who owns the giant U.S. corporation? Like Canada and Australia, whose leaders are prime ministers of the queen, and whose land is called crowned land, the U.S. is just another crowned colony. Crowned colonies are controlled by the empire of the three city states. Thus, the U.S. is controlled by the three city states.

Let's get into some symbolism. At the center of each city state are giant phallic shaped stone monuments called obelisks. In D.C. the obelisk is known as the Washington monument. It was dedicated to George Washington by the Freemason Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia. The secretive brotherhood of Freemasons laid the Washington obelisks cornerstone in 1848 and contributed 22 masonic memorial stones. 250 masonic lodges financed the Washington monument obelisk including the knights templar masonic order.

LESBIAN JEWISH RABBI STANDS UP FOR SHARIA LAW

By Ben Barrack on December 7, 2014 in Featured, General

If there is one group of people that would be put at the top of the list of Sharia law advocates for punishment, it would almost certainly be lesbian Jewish Rabbis like Robin Nafshi. Yet, in what can only be described as a case of Stockholm Syndrome on steroids, Nafshi is standing up for Sharia law. In so doing, she’s fighting for her own extermination.

In an op-ed that appeared in the Concord Monitor, Nafshi writes:
Citation:

As the leader of a religious community with a wide range of political views, I am always cautious when speaking out on partisan issues. But sometimes, I must. Now is that time.

On Sept. 20, the delegates of the New Hampshire Republican Party adopted a Platform of Republican Principles. It contains 83 bulleted goals. Number 83 reads as follows:
“Take any and all actions possible to protect against the implementation of any part of Sharia law in New Hampshire, including legislation outlawing Sharia law.”

Sharia means “the way” in Arabic, and Sharia law guides all aspects of Muslim life, including daily routines, familial and religious obligations, and financial dealings. It is derived primarily from the Quran and the Sunna – the sayings, practices and teachings of the Prophet Mohammed.

Sharia law for Muslims is quite similar to Halakhah for Jews. Halakhah means “the way” in Hebrew and it guides all aspect of Jewish life, including daily routines, familial and religious obligations, and financial dealings. It is derived primarily from the Hebrew Bible and the Talmud – the sayings, practices, and teachings of the early Jewish Rabbis.

Why has the Republican Party singled out Sharia law? Why doesn’t it seek to protect against the implementation in New Hampshire of any part of Halakhah, or for that matter, Roman Catholic Canon Law?

Because the New Hampshire Republican Party and other states that have sought similar bans are playing off of what they believe to be a growing fear in this country. We live in a difficult time, historically. Extremist Muslims – a very small percentage of the overall Muslim population – have hijacked a peaceful religion and perverted it into something narrowly construed and intolerant of the West, Jews, Israel, democracy, women’s education and more.

The politicians who endorse anti-Sharia laws are exploiting Americans’ legitimate fears of ISIS, al Qaida, Hamas and other extremist groups in order to ostracize and discriminate against the American Muslim community.

As the stealth jihadists no doubt laugh their heads off (pun intended) at the level of sheer ignorance displayed by Nafshi, she fails to understand that not only is she advocating for her own destruction but in so doing, she’s facilitating it. In fact, those whom she chides for being opposed to Sharia law are further down on the list of candidates to be subjected to that law.

To use a fattened calf metaphor, in such a case the farmer has to provide the feed, the facilities, the care and ultimately slaughter said calf, which is an unwilling participant.

In the case of Nafshi, as the figurative calf, she’s doing all that for the farmer while also fighting off predators that would kill her, not to protect herself but to save herself for the farmer.

MARIE, APPRENDS-NOUS A ALLER A CONTRE-COURANT!

Le 8 décembre : fête de l'Immaculée Conception

VIDEO : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVLGnYVdqCo

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immacul%C3%A9e_Conception

A.B.

Islam was created by the evil Roman Catholic Church !! so the Pope can kill all the true Christians and Jews.

The Quran was a doctrine from the Roman Empire brought to muhammed by North African augustinian monks.

During the Second Vatican Council, Dr. Rivera was taken deep beneath the Vatican to the Secret Archives, where all the history of the world for the past 2000 years is stored. He was ordered to study the methods of infiltration and extermination used by Nero, Diocletian, Constantine, Dominic, Torquemada, and Loyola etc., in preparation for the Last Great Inquisition!! Dr. Rivera read many top secret documents that linked the Vatican to the creation of Islam and Communism etc.,etc.

How the Vatican created Islam. The astonishing story from an ex-Jesuit priest, Alberto Rivera !!
which was told to him by Cardinal Bea while he was at the Vatican.

POPE DID NOT CALL QURAN "PROPHETIC"

Before taking Francis to task, check to see what he really said.

John Burger

  © Ali-ji Alibaba / CC

A revised version of a Washington Times article makes a statement by Pope Francis a bit less shocking

That's because the corrected version does not have him saying that the Quran is a "prophetic book of peace."

The original lede ran thus:

Pope Francis, in Rome after a three-day trip to Turkey, told reporters that Islam was a religion of peace and that those of different faiths shouldn’t be “enraged” at the Muslim community as a whole when acts of terrorism are committed.
The Koran is a book of peace. It is a prophetic book of peace,” the pope said, United Press International reported http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/dec/1/pope-francis-koran-is-a-prop… .

Patheos blogger Thomas L. McDonald pointed out the error after checking another report, from Reuters, which said Pope Francis' press conference on the plane ride back to Rome went this way:

Pope Francis said on Sunday that equating Islam with violence was wrong and called on Muslim leaders to issue a global condemnation of terrorism to help dispel the stereotype.

Francis, the leader of 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, told reporters aboard his plane returning from a visit to Turkey that he understood why Muslims were offended by many in the West who automatically equated their religion with terrorism.
....
The Argentine pope, who has been trying to foster cooperation with moderate Islam in order to work for peace and protect Christians in the Middle East, said it was wrong for anyone to react to terrorism by being "enraged" against Islam.

"You just can’t say that, just as you can’t say that all Christians are fundamentalists. We have our share of them (fundamentalists). All religions have these little groups," he said.

"They (Muslims) say: ‘No, we are not this, the Koran is a book of peace, it is a prophetic book of peace'."

So, take note: the Pope was reporting what Muslims say about their own book. He wasn't making his own theological judgment on whether the Muslim holy book speaks for God.

UPI, however, still says the Pope said the Quran is a prophetic book of peace.

The incident calls to mind Pope Benedict XVI's famous Regensburg address, in which he quoted a 14th-century Byzantine emperor who said that Islam is spread by the sword:

In the seventh conversation (διάλεξις - controversy) edited by Professor Khoury, the emperor touches on the theme of the holy war. The emperor must have known that surah 2, 256 reads: "There is no compulsion in religion." According to some of the experts, this is probably one of the suras of the early period, when Mohammed was still powerless and under threat. But naturally the emperor also knew the instructions, developed later and recorded in the Qur'an, concerning holy war. Without descending to details, such as the difference in treatment accorded to those who have the "Book" and the "infidels," he addresses his interlocutor with a startling brusqueness, a brusqueness that we find unacceptable, on the central question about the relationship between religion and violence in general, saying: "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”[3] The emperor, after having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. "God", he says, "is not pleased by blood — and not acting reasonably (σὺν λόγω) is contrary to God's nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats... To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death...".[4]

Of course, that's too much to expect people to read, let alone the Pope's entire speech, so let's just focus on the controversial statement:

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”

Unfortunately, many Muslims understood the Pope's words, through the lens of the mainstream media, as endorsing that view. That misunderstanding led to violent protests and several killings of Christians.

Pope Ratzinger then went to Turkey, for much the same reason Pope Francis went—for an ecumenical visit with the Orthodox leader there. But, perhaps as a way of assuaging Muslim anger, he also made a visit to Istanbul's Blue Mosque and prayed there standing next to an imam.

"The prayer in Istanbul’s Blue Mosque was 'not initially planned but it turned out to be very meaningful,'" AsiaNews reported Benedict saying at a general audience after the trip. It was a prayer to the “one Lord of heaven and earth, merciful father of all mankind.”

Now we have another Pope who has gone to Turkey and returned, and comments he made, whether those reported or those mis-reported, have not led to protests and violence on the part of Christians, not even by those the Pope scorned as "our own fundamentalists." McDonald makes another point in this blog post, related to the varying kinds of reaction to papal pronouncements:

More problematic is the,  Hey we all have our nuts, amIright? comment from Francis. Christian fundamentalists are tacky and stupid and annoying, but only very rarely violent.

When a Christian goes fundie, you get Jack Chick and bad music and, sometimes, Eric Robert Rudolph.

When a Muslim goes fundie, you get the armies of ISIS, 9/11, jihad, beheadings, Jew-hate, and the destruction of civilizations.

Of the two faiths, one has tendency to violence and extremism that is rooted in elements of the faith itself, while the other does not. It’s a false equivalence.

POPE FRANCIS ELECTED AFTER SUPERNATURAL “SIGNS SAYS CARDINAL—THE ROLE HIS JESUIT CONTEMPLATIVE WAYS PLA

According to a news article earlier this year in the UK newspaper The Telegraph, the “surprise election of Pope Francis came about because of a series of supernatural ‘signs,’ one of the leading Cardinals in the Roman Catholic Church has claimed.”  The article also stated:
Citation:

Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the Archbishop of Vienna, who was himself widely tipped as a possible successor to Pope Benedict, said he had personally had two “strong signs” that Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was “the chosen one” in the run up to vote.

Citation:

He said only divine intervention could explain the speed with which the Argentine Cardinal – who did not feature on any of the main lists of likely candidates compiled by Vatican experts – was elected.1

If this is true, that Pope Francis was elected through supernatural means, the question must be posed, from which side did this supernatural, “divine” intervention come? If it is indeed supernatural, it had to be either from God or from Satan (the two opposing forces). Because we know that the Catholic church is a false heretical church that believes salvation is justification through works and not the sole work of Christ on the Cross, that Mary is a co-redeemer who did not sin, and that Jesus Christ is found in the Eucharist and the Catholic Mass, we must conclude that this supernatural intervention that brought Jorge Mario Bergoglio to the station of Pope of the Roman Catholic Church is not from God.

How is this relevant to the evangelical/Protestant church today? As Lighthouse Trails and Understand the Times have reported since Pope Francis began his reign as Pope, evangelical leaders are racing to the Pope’s side like never before in the history of the evangelical/Protestant church. Some of these who are rallying with the Pope are Rick Warren, Kenneth Copeland, Joel Osteen, and James Robison, while other Christian leaders, such as Beth Moore, are coming out with statements that are giving strong credibility to the Catholic church.

It is a known fact that Pope Francis is a Jesuit. And as Lighthouse Trails has reported on a number of occasions, he is also a contemplative advocate. See our article Pope Francis – Spiritually “Founded” on a Contemplative Tradition. As research analyst Ray Yungen has documented, the Catholic Church is using contemplative prayer as a means of expanding her borders. Roger Oakland, founder of Understand the Times, has linked the mystical practice of the Eucharist to the Papacy’s New Evangelization program to bring the “lost brethren” back to the “Mother Church.” And as one can see, these efforts are having tremendous results. Ray Yungen states:
Citation:

I had always been confused as to the real nature of this advance in the Catholic church. Was this just the work of a few mavericks and renegades, or did the church hierarchy sanction this practice? My concerns were affirmed when I read in an interview that the mystical prayer movement not only had the approval of the highest echelons of Catholicism but also was, in fact, the source of its expansion. (A Time of Departing, by Ray Yungen)

For thirteen years, Lighthouse Trails has been warning that when people get involved with contemplative meditation practices, they are putting themselves under demonic influence. In time, the spiritual outlook of contemplatives moves away from the Cross and the Gospel and moves toward panentheism and interspirituality.

How does all this tie together? The cover story in Christianity Today’s December 2014 issue proclaims: “Why Everyone is Flocking to Francis.” CT has its own idea of why “everyone” is drawn to the Pope. But if Lighthouse Trails is correct in our conclusions about contemplative spirituality and its outcome, then what is happening here is a “supernatural” occurrence in the lives of millions of people, both Catholic and non-Catholic, who are finding themselves dramatically affected by this Pope.

While we will not try to speculate what the possible role of this Pope could be in relation to Bible prophecy and the endtimes, we will say this with surety: between the New Age and the Catholic Church, the world is being drawn deeper and deeper into darkness and closer and closer to a false christ whom the Bible says is coming.

In closing, we’ll leave you with these words from Warren B. Smith:
Citation:

The Catholic Church today [is] linked to the foundational New Age/New Spirituality teaching that God is “in” everyone.

The 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church, which is the official source for all Roman Catholic doctrine today, states:

“Let us rejoice then and give thanks that we have become not only Christians, but Christ himself. Do you understand and grasp, brethren, God’s grace toward us? Marvel and rejoice: we have become Christ.” (#795)

“For the Son of God became man so that we might become God.” (#460) (cited from “Another Jesus” Calling by Warren B. Smith)

WCC LAUNCHES GLOBAL ECUMENICAL NETWORK FOR ADVOCACY FOR JUST PEACE

09 December 2014

To build just and sustainable peace, engaging churches, ecumenical organizations and civil society, the World Council of Churches (WCC) has launched an Ecumenical Peace Advocacy Network (EPAN) at its conference held from 1-5 December in Sigtuna, Sweden. The work of the EPAN aims to turn into concrete actions the theme “pilgrimage of justice and peace” described in a call issued by the WCC Busan Assembly in 2013.

The WCC consultation and workshop on Peace-building and Advocacy for Just Peace was hosted by the Church of Sweden, the Uniting Church in Sweden, and the Christian Council of Sweden. More than 80 ecumenical advocacy experts, church leaders, as well as civil society and United Nations partners from 37 different countries, took part in the event.

“This consultation intended to create programme synergies and develop collaboration methods, sharing best practices and lessons learned in peace-building, conflict prevention and advocacy for peace,” said Rudelmar Bueno de Faria, WCC representative to the UN in New York.

The workshop focused on a framework for advocacy for peace, as well as practical strategies and tools required to support coordinated international advocacy for a peaceful world. Such a strategy would be employed by ecumenical organizations, including the WCC and its member churches, the ACT Alliance members, national councils of churches and other partners from civil society.

Bueno de Faria added: “The consultation and workshop have been seen by the WCC as part of the wider pilgrimage of justice and peace, and have served as a base for an intentional process to equip the ecumenical movement to play a more meaningful and effective role in advocacy for just peace”.

“As a follow-up to the consultation and workshop, two events will be organized in 2015 in Africa and the Middle East with the purpose of preparing advocacy strategies and plans to promote just peace, reconciliation and conflict prevention,” he added.

Bueno de Faria said: “The new Ecumenical Peace Advocacy Network is a great opportunity for churches to act collectively to address issues related to peace on a global level. Churches and ecumenical organization have the responsibility to mobilize themselves on specific peace issues and influence processes that brings about lasting and just peace”.

Bueno de Faria underlined that the events brought together passionate and committed peace-builders who have shared experiences and discerned together the best way to promote peace, also considering important aspects such as gender-based violence, youth and women’s engagement in peace-building and interfaith cooperation for peace”.

“We need each other, if we want to see global changes. We need networking on prioritized global peace issues and effective advocacy work to promote peace among the peoples,” said Geronimo Desumala III, advocacy officer at the WCC UN office in New York.

Bueno de Faria concluded, “The engagement of the ecumenical movement in peace-building and advocacy for peace is sine-qua-non to promote and ensure peace with justice. The WCC’s understanding of the pilgrimage of justice and peace is the framework which will inform our actions for advocacy for just peace.”

UNITED NATIONS AND VATICAN ARE PLANNING THE NEW WORLD ORDER

Citation:

8 The way of peace they have not known,
And there is no justice in their ways;
They have made themselves crooked paths;
Whoever takes that way shall not know peace.

(Isaiah 59:8)

13 “Their throat is an open tomb;
With their tongues they have practiced deceit”;
“The poison of asps is under their lips”;
14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways;
17 And the way of peace they have not known.”
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

(Romans 3:13-18)

5 Destruction comes;
They will seek peace, but there shall be none.
26 Disaster will come upon disaster,
And rumor will be upon rumor.
Then they will seek a vision from a prophet;
But the law will perish from the priest,
And counsel from the elders.

(Ezekiel 7:25-26)

Notice that the Bible also warnings about some who improperly proclaim peace:
Citation:

13 “Because from the least of them even to the greatest of them,
Everyone is given to covetousness;
And from the prophet even to the priest,
Everyone deals falsely.
14 They have also healed the hurt of My people slightly,
Saying, ‘Peace, peace!’
When there is no peace.
15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?
No! They were not at all ashamed;
Nor did they know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;
At the time I punish them,
They shall be cast down,” says the Lord.

(Jeremiah 6:13-15)

10 “Because, indeed, because they have seduced My people, saying, ‘Peace!’ when there is no peace — and one builds a wall, and they plaster it with untempered mortar —  11 say to those who plaster it with untempered mortar, that it will fall. There will be flooding rain, and you, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a stormy wind shall tear it down. 12 Surely, when the wall has fallen, will it not be said to you, ‘Where is the mortar with which you plastered it?’”
13 Therefore thus says the Lord God: “I will cause a stormy wind to break forth in My fury; and there shall be a flooding rain in My anger, and great hailstones in fury to consume it.  14 So I will break down the wall you have plastered with untempered mortar, and bring it down to the ground, so that its foundation will be uncovered; it will fall, and you shall be consumed in the midst of it. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.
15 “Thus will I accomplish My wrath on the wall and on those who have plastered it with untempered mortar; and I will say to you, ‘The wall is no more, nor those who plastered it, 16 that is, the prophets of Israel who prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and who see visions of peace for her when there is no peace,’” says the Lord God.
17 “Likewise, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people, who prophesy out of their own heart; prophesy against them,

(Ezekiel 13:10-17)

2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

(1 Thessalonians 5:2-6)

Real Christians need to watch what is going on and understand.  All, Christians and non-Christians, should be concerned about the type of ‘peace’ and unity that the WCC, Vatican, and UN are really trying to push.  It is NOT the type of arrangement that the Bible teaches will result in peace, but in war.

As mentioned above, the time will come when there is a type of ‘peace deal’ in the Middle East (Daniel 9:27; see also The ‘Peace Deal’ of Daniel 9:27), but that deal will NOT last.  Do not be fooled by the appeal to peace by those who truly cannot bring it.

Only the return of Jesus Christ and the millennial kingdom can do that. Disaster and destruction will come to the Middle East and other areas before Jesus returns (Daniel 11:39-45; Ezekiel 30:2-8; see also Is the Future King of the South Rising Up?, Who is the King of the North?, and How Will Middle East Peace be Brought About?).

  • Hauteur actuelle1 : 32,18 m (hauteur d'origine probable : environ 32,50 m)

Pope Francis and several of the world's leading religious leaders joined together in a pledge to end human slavery by 2020, focusing on the tens of millions of people "in chains" due to human trafficking and forced labor.

"The physical, economic, sexual and psychological exploitation of men and women, boys and girls, is chaining tens of millions of persons to inhumanity and humiliation," the pope said and signed the pledge to do "all in our power, within our faith communities and beyond" to end modern slavery by 2020.

The signatories of the declaration included Anglican Archbishop Justin Welby of Canterbury; Rabbi David Rosen, international director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee; Ayatollah Mohammad Taqi al-Modarresi, an influential Shiite scholar; Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, as well as representatives for Ahmad el-Tayeb, a grand imam from Egypt. = (who believe : "The madrasa is one of the relics of the Fatimid dynasty era of Egypt, descended from Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad.")

Francis called modern slavery "an atrocious plague," speaking at a ceremony on Tuesday on the U.N. Day for the Abolition of Slavery, according to Catholic News Service.

The Walk Free Foundation, an Australia-based human rights group, reported last month in its global slavery index that there are close to 36 million people living as slaves, or forced into brothels.

"We pledge ourselves here today to do all in our power, within our faith communities and beyond, to work together for the freedom of all those who are enslaved and trafficked so that their future may be restored," the declaration read.

"Today we have the opportunity, awareness, wisdom, innovation and technology to achieve this human and moral imperative," it added.

The multi-faith initiative was started by the Global Freedom Network, which in March first brought together the Vatican, the Anglican Communion, and el-Tayeb's Al-Azhar University in Cairo.

The Roman Catholic Church leader thanked the religious leaders who gathered on Tuesday to sign the document, calling it an "act of fraternity" for the many women, men and children who are exploited for personal or commercial gain.

"We cannot tolerate that the image of the living God" present in every human being "is subjected to this most abominable form of trafficking," Francis said.

The other religious leaders also sounded off on the crisis, with Hindu leader Mata Amritanandamayi noting that she has heard the stories of suffering of hundreds of victims. She said that "if we fail to do something, it will be a travesty against future generations."

Thich Nhat Hanh, a Zen Buddhist leader, added that compassion must also be extended to the traffickers, arguing that they also have suffered. He called on activists to "help them wake up" from the wrong they are committing.

Welby added that people can avoid the exploitation of others with their "own actions and choices as consumers and users of financial services whose managers can put great pressure on companies in which they invest."

Francis has spoken out a number of times against human slavery during his papacy. Back in June, the Vatican leader warned human traffickers that they will be held accountable for their crimes.

"One day everything comes to an end and they will be held accountable to God," the pope said about those responsible for human trafficking, slave labor and arms manufacturing, also calling them "merchants of death."

Speaking on the eve of the World Day Against Child Labor, the pontiff pleaded for the "tens of thousands of children who are forced to work in degrading conditions, exposed to forms of slavery and exploitation, as well as abuse, mistreatment and discrimination."

The satanic 10 commandments by Lucis Trust, Alice A. Bailey explained:

1. Get God out of school and make him irrelevant in people's lives, even many who believe give him little thought or thanks through much of their lives... yup, got us there...
2. The Family unit has been severely disrupted and there is a great deal of disrespect and disobedience to parents, discipline is becoming increasingly rare and children are raised to be selfish and bratty.
3. Sex is promoted all over society with revealing clothes and constant 'sexy' images, it's only getting worse and there seem to be no limits anymore...
4. Sex is an expression of appreciating life, debasing it with adultery, fornication and bestiality is the ultimate expression of lust.
5. People are allowed to shun responsibility and escape consequences of sex through abortion and this is passed off as women's rights while ignoring the mass murder of children.
6. adultery is devastating to the family unit and to the trust people have with each other, in divorces, the biggest losers are the children who are often confused and deprived of positive family time and role models
7. free religion is freedom to express without persecution, but treating all religions as the same deprives each of its unique qualities and dims any serious belief in anything at all, paving the way for the one world religion prophesied in the Bible.
8. the media is absolutely loaded with filth and promotes all of the above
9. The purpose of art is to express beauty, feelings and honoring the things people hold dear, the perversion and infiltration of all art forms (literature, music, paintings, etc...) has promoted all forms of sinful practices and perverted people's idea of normalcy and beauty.
10. Churches everywhere are embracing many of the above or not speaking out enough about it, they have turned their backs to the values they are founded on and grasp the worldly garbage that spews forth ever more sin into the world.

Faced with a military crackdown in Poland, Ronald Reagan and John Paul II secretly joined forces to keep the Solidarity union alive. They hoped not only to pressure Warsaw but to free all of Eastern Europe.

By Carl Bernstein

Only President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II were present in the Vatican Library on Monday, June 7, 1982. It was the first time the two had met, and they talked for 50 minutes. In the same wing of the papal apartments, Agostino Cardinal Casaroli and Archbishop Achille Silvestrini met with Secretary of State Alexander Haig and Judge William Clark, Reagan's National Security Adviser. Most of their discussion focused on Israel's invasion of Lebanon, then in its second day; Haig told them Prime Minister Menachem Begin had assured him that the invasion would not go farther than 25 miles inside Lebanon.

But Reagan and the Pope spent only a few minutes reviewing events in the Middle East. Instead they remained focused on a subject much closer to their heart: Poland and the Soviet dominance of Eastern Europe. In that meeting, Reagan and the Pope agreed to undertake a clandestine campaign to hasten the dissolution of the communist empire. Declares Richard Allen, Reagan's first National Security Adviser: "This was one of the great secret alliances of all time."

The operation was focused on Poland, the most populous of the Soviet satellites in Eastern Europe and the birthplace of John Paul II. Both the Pope and the President were convinced that Poland could be broken out of the Soviet orbit if the Vatican and the U.S. committed their resources to destabilizing the Polish government and keeping the outlawed Solidarity movement alive after the declaration of martial law in 1981.

Until Solidarity's legal status was restored in 1989 it flourished underground, supplied, nurtured and advised largely by the network established under the auspices of Reagan and John Paul II. Tons of equipment--fax machines (the first in Poland), printing presses, transmitters, telephones, shortwave radios, video cameras, photocopiers, telex machines, computers, word processors--were smuggled into Poland via channels established by priests and American agents and representatives of the AFL-CIO and European labor movements. Money for the banned union came from CIA funds, the National Endowment for Democracy, secret accounts in the Vatican and Western trade unions.

Lech Walesa and other leaders of Solidarity received strategic advice--often conveyed by priests or American and European labor experts working undercover in Poland--that reflected the thinking of the Vatican and the Reagan Administration. As the effectiveness of the resistance grew, the stream of information to the West about the internal decisions of the Polish government and the contents of Warsaw's communications with Moscow became a flood. The details came not only from priests but also from spies within the Polish government.

Down with Yalta

According to aides who shared their leaders' view of the world, Reagan and John Paul II refused to accept a fundamental political fact of their lifetimes: the division of Europe as mandated at Yalta and the communist dominance of Eastern Europe. A free, non communist Poland, they were convinced, would be a dagger to the heart of the Soviet empire; and if Poland became democratic, other East European states would follow.

"We both felt that a great mistake had been made at Yalta and something should be done," Reagan says today. "Solidarity was the very weapon for bringing this about, because it was an organization of the laborers of Poland." Nothing quite like Solidarity had ever existed in Eastern Europe, Reagan notes, adding that the workers' union "was contrary to anything the Soviets would want or the communists [in Poland] would want."

According to Solidarity leaders, Walesa and his lieutenants were aware that both Reagan and John Paul II were committed to Solidarity's survival, but they could only guess at the extent of the collaboration. "Officially I didn't know the church was working with the U.S.," says Wojciech Adamiecki, the organizer and editor of underground Solidarity newspapers and now a counselor at the Polish embassy in Washington. "We were told the Pope had warned the Soviets that if they entered Poland he would fly to Poland and stay with the Polish people. The church was of primary assistance. It was half open, half secret. Open as far as humanitarian aid--food, money, medicine, doctors' consultations held in churches, for instance--and secret as far as supporting political activities: distributing printing machines of all kinds, giving us a place for underground meetings, organizing special demonstrations."

At their first meeting, Reagan and John Paul II discussed something else they had in common: both had survived assassination attempts only six weeks apart in 1981, and both believed God had saved them for a special mission. "A close friend of Ronald Reagan's told me the President said, `Look how the evil forces were put in our way and how Providence intervened,'" says Pio Cardinal Laghi, the former apostolic delegate to Washington. According to National Security Adviser Clark, the Pope and Reagan referred to the "miraculous" fact that they had survived. Clark said the men shared "a unity of spiritual view and a unity of vision on the Soviet empire: that right or correctness would ultimately prevail in the divine plan."

"Reagan came in with very simple and strongly held views," says Admiral Bobby Inman, former deputy director of the CIA. "It is a valid point of view that he saw the collapse [of communism] coming and he pushed it--hard." During the first half of 1982, a five-part strategy emerged that was aimed at bringing about the collapse of the Soviet economy, fraying the ties that bound the U.S.S.R. to its client states in the Warsaw Pact and forcing reform inside the Soviet empire. Elements of that strategy included:

-- The U.S. defense buildup already under way, aimed at making it too costly for the Soviets to compete militarily with the U.S. Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative--Star Wars--became a centerpiece of the strategy.
-- Covert operations aimed at encouraging reform movements in Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Poland.
-- Financial aid to Warsaw Pact nations calibrated to their willingness to protect human rights and undertake political and free-market reforms.
-- Economic isolation of the Soviet Union and the withholding of Western and Japanese technology from Moscow. The Administration focused on denying the U.S.S.R. what it had hoped would be its principal source of hard currency in the 21st century: profits from a transcontinental pipeline to supply natural gas to Western Europe. The 3,600-mile-long pipeline, stretching from Siberia to France, opened on time on Jan. 1, 1984, but on a far smaller scale than the Soviets had hoped.
-- Increased use of Radio Liberty, Voice of America and Radio Free Europe to transmit the Administration's messages to the peoples of Eastern Europe.

Yet in 1982 neither Reagan nor the Pope could anticipate the accession of a Soviet leader like Mikhail Gorbachev, the father of glasnost and perestroika; his efforts at reform unleashed powerful forces that spun out of his control and led to the breakup of the Soviet Union. The Washington-Vatican alliance "didn't cause the fall of communism," observes a U.S. official familiar with the details of the plot to keep Solidarity alive. "Like all great and lucky leaders, the Pope and the President exploited the forces of history to their own ends."

The Crackdown

The campaign by Washington and the Vatican to keep Solidarity alive began immediately after General Wojciech Jaruzelski declared martial law on Dec. 13, 1981. In those dark hours, Poland's communications with the noncommunist world were cut; 6,000 leaders of Solidarity were detained; hundreds were charged with treason, subversion and counterrevolution; nine were killed; and the union was banned. But thousands of others went into hiding, many seeking protection in churches, rectories and with priests. Authorities took Walesa into custody and interned him in a remote hunting lodge.

Shortly after Polish security forces moved into the streets, Reagan called the Pope for his advice. At a series of meetings over the next few days, Reagan discussed his options. "We had a massive row in the Cabinet and the National Security Council about putting together a menu of counteractions," former Secretary of State Haig recalls. "They ranged from sanctions that would have been crushing in their impact on Poland to talking so tough that we would have risked creating another situation like Hungary in '56 or Czechoslovakia in '68."

Haig dispatched Ambassador at Large Vernon Walters, a devout Roman Catholic, to meet with John Paul II. Walters arrived in Rome soon after, and met separately with the Pope and with Cardinal Casaroli, the Vatican secretary of state. Both sides agreed that Solidarity's flame must not be extinguished, that the Soviets must become the focus of an international campaign of isolation, and that the Polish government must be subjected to moral and limited economic pressure.

According to U.S. intelligence sources, the Pope had already advised Walesa through church channels to keep his movement operating underground, and to pass the word to Solidarity's 10 million members not to go into the streets and risk provoking Warsaw Pact intervention or civil war with Polish security forces. Because the communists had cut the direct phone lines between Poland and the Vatican, John Paul II communicated with Jozef Cardinal Glemp in Warsaw via radio. He also dispatched his envoys to Poland to report on the situation. "The Vatican's information was absolutely better and quicker than ours in every respect," says Haig. "Though we had some excellent sources of our own, our information was taking too long to filter through the intelligence bureaucracy."

In the first hours of the crisis, Reagan ordered that the Pope receive as quickly as possible relevant American intelligence, including information from a Polish Deputy Minister of Defense who was secretly reporting to the CIA. Washington also handed over to the Vatican reports and analysis from Colonel Ryszard Kuklinski, a senior member of the Polish general staff, who was a CIA informant until November 1981, when he had to be smuggled out of Poland after he warned that the Soviets were prepared to invade if the Polish government did not impose martial law. Kuklinski had issued a similar warning about a Soviet military action in late 1980, which led the outgoing Carter Administration to send secret messages to Leonid Brezhnev informing him that among the costs of an invasion would be the sale of sophisticated U.S. weapons to China. This time, Kuklinski reported to Washington, Brezhnev had grown more impatient, and a disastrous harvest at home meant that the Kremlin did not need mechanized army units to help bring in the crops and instead could spare them for an invasion. "Anything that we knew that we thought the Pope would not be aware of, we certainly brought it to his attention," says Reagan. "Immediately."

The Catholic Team

The key Administration players were all devout Roman Catholics--CIA chief William Casey, Allen, Clark, Haig, Walters and William Wilson, Reagan's first ambassador to the Vatican. They regarded the U.S.-Vatican relationship as a holy alliance: the moral force of the Pope and the teachings of their church combined with their fierce anticommunism and their notion of American democracy. Yet the mission would have been impossible without the full support of Reagan, who believed fervently in both the benefits and the practical applications of Washington's relationship with the Vatican. One of his earliest goals as President, Reagan says, was to recognize the Vatican as a state "and make them an ally."

According to Admiral John Poindexter, the military assistant to the National Security Adviser when martial law was declared in Poland, Reagan was convinced that the communists had made a huge miscalculation: after allowing Solidarity to operate openly for 16 months before the crackdown, the Polish government would only alienate its countrymen by attempting to cripple the labor movement and, most important, would bring the powerful church into direct conflict with the Polish regime. "I didn't think that this [the decision to impose martial law and crush Solidarity] could stand, because of the history of Poland and the religious aspect and all," Reagan says. Says Cardinal Casaroli: "There was a real coincidence of interests between the U.S. and the Vatican."

The major decisions on funneling aid to Solidarity and responding to the Polish and Soviet governments were made by Reagan, Casey and Clark, in consultation with John Paul II. "Reagan understood these things quite well, including the covert side," says Richard Pipes, the conservative Polish-born scholar who headed the NSC's Soviet and East European desks. "The President talked about the evil of the Soviet system--not its people--and how we had to do everything possible to help these people in Solidarity who were struggling for freedom. People like Haig and Commerce Secretary Malcolm Baldrige and James Baker [White House chief of staff at the time] thought it wasn't realistic. George Bush never said a word. I used to sit behind him, and I never knew what his opinions were. But Reagan really understood what was at stake."

By most accounts, Casey stepped into the vacuum in the first days after the declaration of martial law in Poland and--as he did in Central America--became the principal policy architect. Meanwhile Pipes and the NSC staff began drafting proposals for sanctions. "The object was to drain the Soviets and to lay blame for martial law at their doorstep," says Pipes. "The sanctions were coordinated with Special Operations [the CIA division in charge of covert task forces], and the first objective was to keep Solidarity alive by supplying money, communications and equipment."

"The church was trying to modulate the whole situation," explains one of the NSC officials who directed the effort to curtail the pipeline. "They [church leaders] were in effect trying to create circumstances that would head off the serious threat of Soviet intervention while allowing us to get tougher and tougher; they were part and parcel of virtually all of our deliberations in terms of how we viewed the evolution of government-sponsored repression in Poland--whether it was lessening or getting worse, and how we should proceed."

As for his conversations with Reagan about Poland, Clark says they were usually short. "I don't think I ever had an in-depth, one-on-one, private conversation that existed for more than three minutes with him--on any subject. That might shock you. We had our own code of communication. I knew where he wanted to go on Poland. And that was to take it to its nth possibilities. The President and Casey and I discussed the situation on the ground in Poland constantly: covert operations; who was doing what, where, why and how; and the chances of success." According to Clark, he and Casey directed that the President's daily brief--the PDB, an intelligence summary prepared by the CIA--include a special supplement on secret operations and analysis in Poland.

The Pope himself, not only his deputies, met with American officials to assess events in Poland and the effectiveness of American actions and sent back messages--sometimes by letter, sometimes orally--to Reagan. On almost all his trips to Europe and the Middle East, Casey flew first to Rome, so that he could meet with John Paul II and exchange information. But the principal emissary between Washington and Rome remained Walters, a former deputy director of the CIA who worked easily with Casey. Walters met with the Pope perhaps a dozen times, according to Vatican sources. "Walters was sent to and from the Vatican for the specific purpose of carrying messages between the Pope and the President," says former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican Wilson. "It wasn't supposed to be known that Walters was there. It wasn't all specifically geared to Poland; sometimes there were also discussions about Central America or the hostages in Lebanon."

Often in the Reagan years, American covert operations (including those in Afghanistan, Nicaragua and Angola) involved "lethal assistance" to insurgent forces: arms, mercenaries, military advisers and explosives. In Poland the Pope, the President and Casey embarked on the opposite path: "What they had to do was let the natural forces already in place play this out and not get their fingerprints on it," explains an analyst. What emerges from the Reagan-Casey collaboration is a carefully calibrated operation whose scope was modest compared with other CIA activities. "If Casey were around now, he'd be having some smiles," observes one of his reluctant admirers. "In 1991 Reagan and Casey got the reordering of the world that they wanted."

The Secret Directive

Less than three weeks before his meeting with the Pope in 1982, the President signed a secret national-security-decision directive (NSDD 32) that authorized a range of economic, diplomatic and covert measures to "neutralize efforts of the U.S.S.R." to maintain its hold on Eastern Europe. In practical terms, the most important covert operations undertaken were those inside Poland. The primary purposes of NSDD 32 were to destabilize the Polish government through covert operations involving propaganda and organizational aid to Solidarity; the promotion of human rights, particularly those related to the right of worship and the Catholic Church; economic pressure; and diplomatic isolation of the communist regime. The document, citing the need to defend democratic reform efforts throughout the Soviet empire, also called for increasing propaganda and underground broadcasting operations in Eastern Europe, actions that Reagan's aides and dissidents in Eastern Europe believe were particularly helpful in chipping away at the notion of Soviet invincibility. [continued]

The Holy Alliance

As Republican Congressman Henry Hyde, a member of the House Intelligence Committee from 1985 to 1990, who was apprised of some of the Administration's covert actions, observes, "In Poland we did all of the things that are done in countries where you want to destabilize a communist government and strengthen resistance to that.

We provided the supplies and technical assistance in terms of clandestine newspapers, broadcasting, propaganda, money, organizational help and advice. And working outward from Poland, the same kind of resistance was organized in the other communist countries of Europe."

Among those who played a consulting role was Zbigniew Brzezinski, a native of Poland and President Jimmy Carter's National Security Adviser. "I got along very well with Casey," recalls Brzezinski. "He was very flexible and very imaginative and not very bureaucratic; if something needed to be done, it was done. To sustain an underground effort takes a lot in terms of supplies, networks, etc., and this is why Solidarity wasn't crushed."

On military questions, American intelligence was better than the Vatican's, but the church excelled in its evaluations of the political situation. And in understanding the mood of the people and communicating with the Solidarity leadership, the church was in an incomparable position. "Our information about Poland was very well founded because the bishops were in continual contact with the Holy See and Solidarnosc," explains Cardinal Silvestrini, the Vatican's deputy secretary of state at that time. "They informed us about prisoners, about the activities and needs of Solidarity groups and about the attitude and schisms in the government." All this information was communicated to the President or Casey.

"If you study the situation of Solidarity, you see they acted very cleverly, without pressing too much at the crucial moments, because they had guidance from the church," says one of the Pope's closest aides. "Yes, there were times we restrained Solidarnosc. But Poland was a bomb that could explode--in the heart of communism, bordered by the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and East Germany. Too much pressure, and the bomb would go off."

Casey's Cappuccino

Meanwhile, in Washington a close relationship developed between Casey, Clark and Archbishop Laghi. "Casey and I dropped into his [Laghi's] residence early mornings during critical times to gather his comments and counsel," says Clark. "We'd have breakfast and coffee and discuss what was being done in Poland. I'd speak to him frequently on the phone, and he would be in touch with the Pope." Says Laghi: "They liked good cappuccino. Occasionally we might talk about Central America or the church position on birth control. But usually the subject was Poland."

"Almost everything having to do with Poland was handled outside of normal State Department channels and would go through Casey and Clark," says Robert McFarlane, who served as a deputy to both Clark and Haig and later as National Security Adviser to the President. "I knew that they were meeting with Pio Laghi, and that Pio Laghi had been to see the President, but Clark would never tell me what the substance of the discussions was."

On at least six occasions Laghi came to the White House and met with Clark or the President; each time, he entered the White House through the southwest gate in order to avoid reporters. "By keeping in such close touch, we did not cross lines," says Laghi. "My role was primarily to facilitate meetings between Walters and the Holy Father. The Holy Father knew his people. It was a very complex situation--how to insist on human rights, on religious freedom, and keep Solidarity alive without provoking the communist authorities further. But I told Vernon, `Listen to the Holy Father. We have 2,000 years' experience at this.'"

Though William Casey has been vilified for aspects of his tenure as CIA chief, there is no criticism of his instincts on Poland. "Basically, he had a quiet confidence that the communists couldn't hold on, especially in Poland," says former Congressman Edward Derwinski, a Polish-speaking expert on Eastern Europe who counseled the Administration and met with Casey frequently. "He was convinced the system was falling and doomed to collapse one way or another--and Poland was the force that would lead to the dam breaking. He demanded a constant [CIA] focus on Eastern Europe. It wasn't noticed, because other stories were more controversial and were perking at the moment--Nicaragua and Salvador."

In Poland, Casey conducted the kind of old-style operation that he relished, something he might have done in his days at the Office of Strategic Services during World War II or in the early years of the CIA, when the democracies of Western Europe rose from the ashes of World War II. It was through Casey's contacts, his associates say, that elements of the Socialist International were organized on behalf of Solidarity--just as the Social Democratic parties of Western Europe had been used as an instrument of American policy by the CIA in helping to create anticommunist governments after the war. And this time the objective was akin to creating a Christian Democratic majority in Poland--with the church and the overwhelmingly Catholic membership of Solidarity as the dominant political force in a postcommunist Poland. Through his contacts with leaders of the Socialist International, including officials of socialist governments in France and Sweden, Casey ensured that tactical assistance was available on the Continent and at sea to move goods into Poland. "This wasn't about spending huge amounts of money," says Brzezinski. "It was about getting the message out and resisting: books, communications equipment, propaganda, ink and printing presses."

Look for the Union Label

In almost every city and town, underground newspapers and mimeographed bulletins appeared, challenging the state-controlled media. The church published its own newspapers. Solidarity missives, photocopied and mimeographed on American-supplied equipment, were tacked to church bulletin boards. Stenciled posters were boldly posted on police stations and government buildings and even on entrances to the state-controlled television center, where army officers broadcast the news.

The American embassy in Warsaw became the pivotal CIA station in the communist world and, by all accounts, the most effective. Meanwhile, the AFL-CIO, which had been the largest source of American support for Solidarity before martial law, regarded the Reagan Administration's approach as too slow and insufficiently confrontational with the Polish authorities. Nonetheless, according to intelligence sources, AFL-CIO president Lane Kirkland and his aide Tom Kahn consulted frequently with Poindexter, Clark and other officials at the State Department and the NSC on such matters as how and when to move goods and supplies into Poland, identifying cities where Solidarity was in particular need of organizing assistance, and examining how Solidarity and the AFL-CIO might collaborate in the preparation of propaganda materials.

"Lane Kirkland deserves special credit," observes Derwinski. "They don't like to admit [it], but they literally were in lockstep [with the Administration]. Also never forget that Bill Clark's wife is Czechoslovak, as is Lane Kirkland's wife. This is one issue where everybody was aboard; there were no turf fights or mavericks or naysayers."

But AFL-CIO officials were never aware of the extent of clandestine U.S. assistance, or the Administration's reliance on the church for guidance regarding how hard to push Polish and Soviet authorities. Casey was wary of "contaminating" the American and European labor movements by giving them too many details of the Administration's efforts. And indeed this was not strictly a CIA operation. Rather, it was a blend of covert and overt, public policy and secret alliances. Casey recognized that in many instances the AFL-CIO was more imaginative than his own operatives in providing organizational assistance to Solidarity and smuggling equipment into the country. According to former deputy CIA director Inman, Casey decided that the American labor movement's relationship with Solidarity was so good that much of what the CIA needed could be financed and obtained through AFL-CIO channels. "Financial support wasn't what they needed," says Inman. "It was organization, and that was an infinitely better way to help them than through classic covert operations."

The Solidarity office in Brussels became an international clearinghouse: for representatives of the Vatican, for CIA operatives, for the AFL-CIO, for representatives of the Socialist International, for the congressionally funded National Endowment for Democracy, which also worked closely with Casey. It was the place where Solidarity told its backers--some of whose real identities were unknown to Solidarity itself--what it needed, where goods and supplies and organizers could be most useful. Priests, couriers, labor organizers and intelligence operatives moved in and out of Poland with requests for aid and with detailed information on the situation inside the government and the underground. Food and clothing and money to pay fines of Solidarity leaders who were brought before Polish courts poured into the country. Inside Poland, a network of priests carried messages back and forth between the churches where many of Solidarity's leaders were in hiding.

In the summer of 1984, when the sanctions against Poland seemed to be hurting ordinary Poles and not the communists, Laghi traveled to Santa Barbara to meet with Reagan at the Western White House and urge that some of the sanctions be lifted. The Administration complied. At the same time, the White House, in close consultation with the Vatican, refused to ease its economic pressures on Moscow--denying technology, food and cultural exchanges as the price for continuing oppression in Poland.

Much of the equipment destined for Solidarity arrived in Poland by ship--often packed in mismarked containers sent from Denmark and Sweden, then unloaded at Gdansk and other ports by dockers secretly working with Solidarity. According to Administration officials, the socialist government of Sweden--and Swedish labor unions--played a crucial role in arranging the transshipment of goods to Poland. From the Polish docks, equipment moved to its destination in trucks and private cars driven by Solidarity sympathizers who often used churches and priests as their point of contact for deliveries and pickups.

"Solidarity Lives!"

"The Administration plugged into the church across the board," observes Derwinski, now Secretary of Veterans Affairs. "Not just through the church hierarchy but through individual churches and bishops. Monsignor Bronislaw Dabrowski, a deputy to Cardinal Glemp, came to us often to tell us what was needed: he would meet with me, with Casey, the NSC and sometimes with Walters." John Cardinal Krol of Philadelphia, whose father was born in Poland, was the American churchman closest to the Pope. He frequently met with Casey to discuss support for Solidarity and covert operations, according to CIA sources and Derwinski. "Krol hit it off very well with President Reagan and was a source of constant advice and contact," says Derwinski. "Often he was the one Casey or Clark went to, the one who really understood the situation."

By 1985 it was apparent that the Polish government's campaign to suppress Solidarity had failed. According to a report by Adrian Karatnycky, who helped organize the AFL-CIO's assistance to Solidarity, there were more than 400 underground periodicals appearing in Poland, some with a circulation that exceeded 30,000. Books and pamphlets challenging the authority of the communist government were printed by the thousands. Comic books for children recast Polish fables and legends, with Jaruzelski pictured as the villain, communism as the red dragon and Walesa as the heroic knight. In church basements and homes, millions of viewers watched documentary videos produced and screened on the equipment smuggled into the country.

With clandestine broadcasting equipment supplied by the CIA and the AFL-CIO, Solidarity regularly broke into the government's radio programming, often with the message "Solidarity lives!" or "Resist!" Armed with a transmitter supplied by the CIA through church channels, Solidarity interrupted television programming with both audio and visual messages, including calls for strikes and demonstrations. "There was a great moment at the half time of the national soccer championship," says a Vatican official. "Just as the whistle sounded for the half, a SOLIDARITY LIVES! banner went up on the screen and a tape came on calling for resistance. What was particularly ingenious was waiting for the half-time break; had the interruption come during actual soccer play, it could have alienated people." As Brzezinski sums it up, "This was the first time that communist police suppression didn't succeed."

"Nobody believed the collapse of communism would happen this fast or on this timetable," says a cardinal who is one of the Pope's closest aides. "But in their first meeting, the Holy Father and the President committed themselves and the institutions of the church and America to such a goal. And from that day, the focus was to bring it about in Poland."

Step by reluctant step, the Soviets and the communist government of Poland bowed to the moral, economic and political pressure imposed by the Pope and the President. Jails were emptied, Walesa's trial on charges of slandering state officials was abandoned, the Polish communist party turned fratricidal, and the country's economy collapsed in a haze of strikes and demonstrations and sanctions.

On Feb. 19, 1987, after Warsaw had pledged to open a dialogue with the church, Reagan lifted U.S. sanctions. Four months later, Pope John Paul II was cheered by millions of his countrymen as he traveled across Poland demanding human rights and praising Solidarity. In July 1988, Gorbachev visited Warsaw and signaled Moscow's recognition that the government could not rule without Solidarity's cooperation. On April 5, 1989, the two sides signed agreements legalizing Solidarity and calling for open parliamentary elections in June. In December 1990, nine years after he was arrested and his labor union banned, Lech Walesa became President of Poland.

"THE U.S. and the Vatican on Birth Control"

In response to concerns of the Vatican, the Reagan Administration agreed to alter its foreign-aid program to comply with the church's teachings on birth control.

According to William Wilson, the President's first ambassador to the Vatican, the State Department reluctantly agreed to an outright ban on the use of any U. S. aid funds by either countries or international health organizations for the promotion of birth control or abortion. As a result of this position, announced at the World Conference on Population in Mexico City in 1984, the U.S. withdrew funding from, among others, two of the world's largest family planning organizations: the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities.

"American policy was changed as a result of the Vatican's not agreeing with our policy," Wilson explains. "American aid programs around the world did not meet the criteria the Vatican had for family planning. AID [the Agency for International Development] sent various people from [the Department of] State to Rome, and I'd accompany them to meet the president of the Pontifical Council for the Family, and in long discussions they finally got the message. But it was a struggle. They finally selected different programs and abandoned others as a result of this intervention."

"I might have touched on that in some of my discussions with [CIA director William] Casey," acknowledges Pio Cardinal Laghi, the former apostolic delegate to Washington. "Certainly Casey already knew about our positions about that."

The Administration consulted with the Vatican on other matters as well. In Lebanon, the Reagan Administration adopted policies favoring the interests of the church and Maronite Christians. On several occasions, Casey used church channels to deal with the contras, though the Vatican itself took no official position on the war in Nicaragua. (Indeed, the Pope issued numerous appeals for peace in Central America and implicitly criticized the U.S. for prolonging the conflict.)

Cardinal Laghi, who had served in Nicaragua in the early 1950s as secretary at the Apostolic Nunciature in Managua, played a key role by assuring contra leaders that the Administration delivered on its promises.

AMERICAN DEMOCRACY & THE VATICAN:

POPULATION GROWTH & NATIONAL SECURITY

By Dr. [Phd.] Stephen Mumford

"The Reagan administration has been overwhelmingly the most [Roman] Catholic in American history, and its agenda has been essentially the Vatican agenda."

PREFACE

This book deals with the national and global security implications of world population growth and urges that this growth problem be redefined in terms different from the customary approaches. The solutions - modern methods of contraception, abortion, sterilization, expanding opportunities for women, sex education, and the like - are in fact gravely threatening the survival of the Vatican, at least its political dimension.

According to Father Andrew Greeley, the Vatican leaders are concerned not so much with the religious dimensions of the Church as with its vast worldwide political power. The greater the number of their communicants, the greater the power of this hierarchy. These prelates, recognizing their jeopardy, have placed the religious dimension of the Church at risk in order to prevail politically.

The United States National Security Council, on the other hand, in 1979 and 1980, determined that world population growth seriously threatens the security of all nations including our own. Thus the dimensions of the conflict are defined.

The political Catholic Church (the Vatican) is pitted against the national security interests of the United States. Clearly, to ignore the population problem will be to invite severe consequences and, ultimately, a complete loss of our national security.

Thus threatened, the Vatican is resorting to desperate and bold measures in America. Four years ago, it went to great lengths to assist in the election of an American president, using the infrastructure created by the Catholic bishops' 1975 Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities (often referred to as the Pastoral Plan of Action; see, appendix two), purportedly created to combat legalized abortion.

The Reagan administration has been overwhelmingly the most [Roman] Catholic in American history, and its agenda has been essentially the Vatican agenda.

About 4 percent of the U.S. population is Irish Roman Catholic. Mr. Reagan's father, like the leadership of the [Roman] Catholic Church in America, was an Irish Roman Catholic, and his brother is a devout [Roman] Catholic. No one doubts the president's close ties to the [Roman] Catholic Church.

In any administration, the appointments most relevant to the population growth-security issue are national security advisor, secretary of state, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, attorney- general (responsible for illegal immigration control), and secretary of Health and Human Services (who sets the national example for provision of comprehensive family planning services).

Mr. Reagan has appointed three national security advisors - Richard Allen, William Clark, and James McFarland. All are Irish Catholic.

His two secretaries of state have been Alexander Haig, an Irish Catholic, and George Schultz, a Catholic of German extraction.

His CIA director is William Casey, an Irish Roman Catholic, as is his attorney-general, William French Smith.

HHS Secretary Margaret Heckler is also Irish Roman Catholic.

In a nation in which only 4 percent of the population is Irish Catholic, this causes no small concern. Any scientist computing mathematical probabilities will agree that the odds of this arrangement happening by chance are nil. Now that it has become apparent that the agenda of the Reagan administration and the Vatican are essentially the same, concern has turned into alarm.

In his book, American Freedom and Catholic Power, published some thirty-five years ago, the Reverend Paul Blanshard discussed what theoretically could happen to American democracy if the Catholic Church conducted itself as it has in most other countries in recent history, manipulating Governments at will.

Blanshard's book was labeled heretical and rabidly anti-Catholic. Librarians were ordered to remove it from their shelves. It was kept secretly in desk drawers. How tragic - for both non-Catholic and Catholic Americans.

Nowhere is it clearer that the best interests of the Vatican have superseded those of the United States than in matters concerning the population growth-national security issue. Many knowledgeable Americans, including Catholics, agree with another Irish Catholic American, a former secretary of defense and World Bank president. Robert McNamara, who believes that world population growth is a greater threat to U.S. security than thermonuclear war. ....

Preface 3 xv

Of great importance is the fact that, like McNamara, most CathoIic Americans do not subscribe to the Vatican position on population growth control. Catholic Americans use the same contraceptive methods and have abortions at the same rates as non-Catholic Americans, and they have the same desired family sizes. Furthermore, most American Catholics deeply disagree with the Vatican on the need for population growth control.

However, there is a cadre of devout Catholics, which, out of deep religious conviction, follow the dictates of the Vatican, without question.
There is a smaller group of laypersons, less religious, that carry out orders for the rewards of power and privilege.

They have been joined by certain non-Catholics-fundamentalist Christians, Mormons, and Orothodox Jews-who are genuinely opposed to abortion, legal or not, although they are definitely in the minority among anti-abortionists (less than 30 percent of the activists). Other non-Catholic laypersons, such as Senator Helms and Congressman Levin, have joined the Vatican effort because they derive enormous power from the Vatican.

Nevertheless, it is undeniable that the energy, organization, and direction of the anti-abortion, anti-family- planning, anti-population-growth-control movement in the United States comes from the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church.

The fears of the Reverend Mr. Blanshard are now being realized. The president, in a speech in Hoboken, New jersey, on July 26, 1984, stated that he was following the leadership of Pope John Paul II in determining U.S. foreign policy in Central America in the latest efforts to save Vatican-backed oppressive governments from popular uprisings.

The White House position paper prepared for the World Population Conference in Mexico City (see, appendix three) is the same as the Vatican policy on abortion, family planning, and population growth control.

The threat of the Vatican to democracy is overwhelmingly apparent in Pope Pius IX'S Syllabus of errors (see, appendix four), as binding today as when it was promulgated more than one hundred years ago. According to the Roman Catholic Encyclopedia, "all Catholics are bound to accept the syllabus."

Today, before being ordained, every Catholic priest is required to swear to support the eighty articles of the syllabus. Priests who are American citizens have taken an oath to support a philosophy diametrically opposed to and condemning the principles of the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of rights.

American Catholics are certain to pay a terrible price for this intrusion upon American sovereignty. In 1969, the so-called Soccer War was fought between El Salvador and Honduras. This was the first war ever directly attributed to overpopulation, a determination made by the Organization of American States. The war was prompted by massive illegal immigration from grossly overpopulated El Salvador into Honduras.

[ similar to later tragedy in RC dominated Rwanda & Burundi.... jp ]
Fifteen years later, the overpopulation problem continues to be all but ignored in El Salvador because the Vatican demands that it be ignored. The population today is growing at the incredible rate of 2.6 percent per year, and the country has a doubling time of twenty-seven years. The results of this continued growth have been general chaos, the illegal immigration of more than 20 percent of Salvadorans to the United States, a breakdown in social order, and destruction of the economic, social, and political structures of the country.

This is the kind of chaos that the United States has in store if we allow continued illegal immigration of tens of millions of Catholic Latin Americans and others into the United States. This approach to assuming control over the most powerful nation on earth appears to be what the Vatican has in mind, since it represents the only significant opposition to illegal immigration control.

The public trust in all American [Roman] Catholics is imminently threatened by this refusal of the Vatican to respect American sovereignty. As soon as American non-Catholics sense that this trust has been broken by a significant number of catholics who owe their first loyalty to the Vatican, public trust in [Roman] Catholics in general will be destroyed, albeit undeservedly. If the Vatican proceeds with this infringement on U.S. sovereignty, a violent reaction is already predictable.

Unfortunately, all of us will pay for the Vatican's struggle for power.

On September 12, 1984, Bill Moyers appeared with Dan Rather on the CBS evening news. His commentary referred to the alliance between the Roman Catholic bishops and Protestant fundamentalists. He discussed the threat of the separation of church and state issue, which has been renewed by the 1984 presidential campaign, and placed in the strongest terms the seriousness of this threat to America:

PRAYER FOR THE POPE ON HIS 78th BIRTHDAY

"May the Lord preserve him, give him a long life, make him blessed upon the earth"

Rome, December 17, 2014 (Zenit.org

As Pope Francis celebrates his 78th birthday today, here is a prayer for the Pope:

V. Let us pray for Francis, the Pope.
R. May the Lord preserve him, give him a long life, make him blessed upon the earth, and may the Lord not hand him over to the power of his enemies.
V. May your hand be upon your holy servant.
R. And upon your son whom you have anointed.

Let us pray. O God, the Pastor and Ruler of all the faithful, look down, in your mercy, upon your servant, Francis, whom you have appointed to preside over your Church; and grant, we beseech you, that both by word and example, he may edify all those under his charge; so that, with the flock entrusted to him, he may arrive at length unto life everlasting. Through Christ our Lord.

R. Amen.

CARDINAL TAURAN : ESSENCE OF ISLAM IS BEING DISFIGURED

Says Extremists Act Without Reason, Meaning

Vatican City, December 19, 2014 (Zenit.org) Deborah Castellano Lubov

The president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue believes the Pope's actions promoting interreligious dialogue in Turkey were both simple and clear.

In an interview with ZENIT earlier this month following the Pope’s visit to Turkey, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran shed light on interreligious dialogue among Muslims, Christians and Jews, and explained how youth, if properly trained, can offer hope for increasing understanding among religions.

Reflecting on what he considers the biggest challenge in dialogue with Muslims, the dicastery president said, "The problem is that the essence of Islam is being disfigured. What the extremists are doing has no reason, has no meaning."

"It is evil, not even like animals," he said, "Animals don’t even behave like that."

"We have to recuperate the sense of life. The dignity of the person, the sense of life and PEACE," the Vatican official declared.

When asked for his reaction to the Pope's visit to Turkey, he noted it was "very significant" for him personally, especially being responsible for interreligious dialogue.

"I think the Pope has been very clear. Simple and clear," he said.

"What is important to make people understand," he said, "is that we cannot be happy the one without the others. And never the one against the others."

Responding to how dialogue with Muslims was promoted during the visit, the French cardinal stressed, "There was dialogue, but it's very discreet, I should say."

"Because there's a tiny Christian community," he noted, the dialogue is not as obvious, but it still exists. "It's just not as elaborated like in Europe or the Middle East."

He said Pope Francis having met with the Chief Rabbi in Turkey could be seen as increased interreligious dialogue with Jews. However, he added that even with the Pope's efforts, "It’s not easy to make the three monotheistic religions be in dialogue."

New youth

Reflecting on the recently held Summit on Christian-Muslim relations at the Vatican, he noted he appreciated the reflections on the necessity of education.

The Christian-Muslim Summit was held in Rome Dec. 2-4, and gathered Christians, both Catholic and Anglican Episcopal, and Muslims, both Sunni and Shia, as well as religious leaders and scholars from around the world. Their goal was to foster interreligious and intercultural relationships and address issues of conflict, in particular between the followers of both religions.

Cardinal Tauran headed the Catholic delegation, while the Anglican Episcopal delegation was led by the Right Reverend John Bryson Chane, eighth bishop of the Anglican Episcopal Diocese of Washington and senior advisor on Interreligious Dialogue to Washington National Cathedral.

Prince El Hasan bin Talal of Jordan and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Institute for Interfaith Studies Amman Jordan led the Sunni delegation and Ayatollah Sayyed Professor Mustafa Mohaghegh Damad, director of Islamic Studies at the Iran Academy of Sciences, led the Shia Delegation.

The quality of the exchange of views at the summit, and the depth of the text on which participants elaborated were meaningful, the cardinal stressed, explaining points offered "were new" and "constitute new and very important developments."

"We haven't been able to transmit values to the young generation. It's almost akin to having builders without mortar," he stated, expressing, "This is a tragedy."

Nevertheless, he stressed, "Family, school/university, and temples, churches and mosques are the fundamental institutions where we can make a new youth emerge.”

"Because young people are accustomed to living in a pluralistic world," the cardinal suggested, "It's easier for children to understand and accept each other than it was 10 years ago."

"We live in a global world. Boys and girls who are six years old know or partake in interreligious dialogue in their own way. Now they meet Jews and Muslims since kindergarten. So they begin to practice interreligious dialogue," he said.

Twenty years ago, Cardinal Tauran noted, "this was unthinkable."

THE 'YES' OF MARY, MOTHER OF JOY

Usurping :

1. To seize and hold (the power or rights of another, for example) by force or without legal authority.
2. To take over or occupy without right: usurp a neighbor's land.
3. To take the place of (another) without legal authority; supplant.

Usurping the glory and Majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ. The androgine Mother of Joy is Lucifer. When you sold your soul to Mary, in fact, you sold your sold to the devil, who takes control of your spirit and he/she will lead you in confusion and lies.

Lectio Divina: 4th Sunday of Advent, Year B

Paris, December 19, 2014 (Zenit.org) Monsignor Francesco Follo

Roman Rite

4th Sunday of Advent - Year B - December 21, 2014

2 Sam 7,1-5.8-12.14.16; Ps 89; Rm 16.25 to 27; Luke 1,26-38

Ambrosian Rite

6th Sunday of Advent - Sunday or the Incarnation of the Divine Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Is 62,10-63,3b; Ps 71; Fil 4.4 to 9; Luke 1: 26-38a

1) The time of the "Yes"

During the previous Sundays the Liturgy has drawn attention to the figure of John the Baptist, the Precursor. Today it is Mary, His Mother that He gave also to us, that is offered as the example of the waiting for Christ to welcome into our lives and in our flesh.

Hence, it is important to grasp the behavior of the Virgin towards the One who comes to take home in us, who became flesh to save our flesh so the we may "conceive" the Word of God concretely. With her "fiat" (yes), Mary conceived Jesus under her heart. With our fiat we conceive Him in our hearts. Mary teaches us to say the great word "Yes, fiat, O Lord, thy will be done."1

The "yes", the "fiat" of the Virgin Mary was not pronounced by a heart dull or sleepy, but by one tense and watchful. Even if uttered by a humble young woman, this spousal “yes” is the expression of a simple and profound heart. Mary is the Mother of God not only because she gave physical life to Jesus, but also because before conceiving Him in her womb, she listened to Him with the ear and conceived Him in the heart. She is the mother because she listens and welcomes the Son and let Him live like He is, not just because she brings Him in her lap and gives Him birth.2

The "yes" of Mary was the expression of the freedom of this pure Virgin, fruitful and conscious of belonging to a history, a great history, that was bringing God into the world.

A fact is historical not only because it occurs in time, but also because it occurs in a place.

The time is indicated as follows, "It was the sixth month from the conception of St. John the Baptist by Elizabeth." It is the episode preceding the one mentioned in the today's Gospel. Now, a six-month-old is not complete. John the Baptist represents the Old Testament and the promise. It is important to take note that the Annunciation fulfills the promise ahead of time.

When does the fulfillment happens? At the sixth month, namely when the promise is not yet mature. That, in my opinion means that the realization of a promise depends not only from God. God has made the promise, He could fulfill it immediately, He does it at the sixth month, He only waits for someone to say "yes, let it be to me as you have said, I welcome the Word.”

In short, God has been forever "Yes" to the man. When finally we also say yes as Mary did, then the fullfilment takes place. We become mature and complete people when we say yes to God. Do not wait for tomorrow to say "Yes". Normally we think of tomorrow, waiting for better times. No. The only time we have is the present.3 This is the only time when we touch the eternal: the past is gone, the future is not yet here. What we are living is the time of listening. We must not look for a better one, otherwise we spend half of our life thinking about the future and the other half regretting the past, and we never live. God is "present" and his proposal is done "now." It was not yesterday, it was not for tomorrow, it is for today. In the Gospel of Luke we remember the first words of Jesus: "Today this word is fulfilled."

2) The place and the characters of Yes.

In this day of the Yes, it is important to understand also the place where it was pronounced, the location that the Evangelist Luke presents in deliberate contrast to the previous narration of John the Baptist.

The announcement of the birth of John the Baptist takes place in the Temple of Jerusalem, is made to a priest who is carrying out his duties and takes place, so to speak, officially, as required by law, in accordance with the cult, the place and Jewish rites.

The announcement of the birth of the Messiah is made to Mary, a woman who lives in Nazareth, a small, insignificant country village of semi-pagan Galileans. Nazareth for us today means: the place of everyday life. It is to teach us that the Word is the place where we live every day. It is in our daily lives that we can and must live as children of God and listen to the Word. Then it will be helpful to go in shrines, basilicas and in the places where we can be with many others, because these places call us to a life of communion in the Church. But the important thing is the "here and now": the present and the place of everyday life. It is there that every day the Word is made flesh in the same that in the everyday life of Mary, who has become the "place" of welcome, the new life begins. This life began not in the temple but in simple humanity of Jesus Christ, who became the true temple, the tent of meeting.

After having considered the “place” where God has revealed his love, the simple house of the humble Mary, let’s look at the characters of this announcement.

Let's start with the angel Gabriel, whose name means "power of God", who addresses Mary that with her "yes" will bear fruit by the power of God's grace.

The Angel's greeting to Mary is "Rejoice, full of grace," that we might paraphrase "Be joyful, you who are freely and forever beloved by God." Our Lady is called to a mission, but first is invited to joy, every anguish is cancelled because the Lord "is with her" to save her and the entire humanity.

Let’s fix our eyes on the heart of Mary, who calls herself "servant" and that the Angel of God defines full of grace. Grace and service: in these two terms is enclosed all the Christian understanding of existence. The gift received continues to become a gift.

Mary remains troubled by the angel's words. However, her confusion is not derived from misunderstanding or from fear. It comes from the emotion produced by the encounter with God who through the Angel tells her that, “free to be loved by God” is her new name.

When God calls someone to make him an instrument of salvation, he not only calls him by name, but gives him a new name, really capable of expressing his identity and his vocation. For Mary the new name is "full of grace" that is "free and forever loved by God." This new name of Mary speaks immediately of the gratuitousness and faithfulness of God, the root of all correct understanding of God, man and the world. Of this root Mary is the luminous and transparent icon. And this is already the happy news of the miracle of Christmas, which is now imminent.

"To accept and to welcome the miracle of Christmas, is to accept that Mary is truly the 'Mother of God' and the ‘Virgin Mother’.” This is not against sexuality and human love. The meaning is another. We know very well that the life we give is a life toward death. God's intervention was needed. It was necessary that the chain of birth to death should be broken so that with Jesus a creature totally alive could rise, a living creature that would not be inside death like us, but that would voluntarily grab it to destroy it. The fruitful virginity of Mary, as well as the appearances of the Risen One behind closed doors, are a sign of this life more living than ours, a transfigured materiality.4

The example of Mary, who gives life to the totally alive, today is especially carried out by the consecrated virgins. By freely choosing virginity, these women confirm themselves as persons mature and capable of living. At the same time they realize the personal value of their own femininity by becoming "a sincere and total gift" to Christ, Redeemer of man and Spouse of souls. The naturally spousal disposition of the feminine personality finds a response in a virginity understood in this way. The woman, called from the very "beginning" to be loved and to love, finds in the vocation to virginity first of all the Christ as the Redeemer who "loved to the end" through the total gift of self. She responds to this gift with the "sincere gift" of her entire life (see Saint John Paul II, Mulieris dignitatem, 34).

The consecrated virgins in the world show us how to follow the fruiful example of Mary, living like her the grace of simplicity. They testify with simple humility that we should not force ourselves to think of big things, let alone to do them, because we become ridiculous in our presumption. Like the Virgin Mary we must recognize and accept the presence of the Word of God in us.

Let’s pray to Our Lady that what happened in her may happen in us. Let’s ask the Lord that His love may take root like a flower in the fragility of our flesh.

And let us all push ourselves to imitate the attitude of Mary of Nazareth, who shows us that "being is prior to doing, and that we must leave it to God to truly be what He wants us to be. It is He who makes in us many wonders. Mary is receptive, but not passive. In the same way in which she at the physical level, receives the power of the Holy Spirit but then gives flesh and blood to the Son of God that takes form in her, so, on a spiritual level, she welcomes the grace and responds to it with faith "(Pope Francis, Angelus December 8, 2014).

----

1 If by chance one recites the Rosary, he repeats 50 times in a row what is the core of the Gospel passage of this Sunday. The bells ring three times a day. This tradition was introduced by St. Francis of Assisi returning from the East as a reminder of the Annunciation. The Incarnation of the Word, the yes of Mary is at the beginning, at the end and in the middle of the day.

2 In this regard, remember that when they say to Jesus: "Your mother and your brothers are outside looking fo you", Jesus answers "Who is my mother, who are my brothers? Who hears and does the Word”. Mary is his mother because she listens to the Word, and does the Word. When a woman says to him” Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you”, Jesus says ” Blessed are those who hear and do the word”. Mary is always presented as the prototype of the one who listens and by listening does what he hears.

3 Moreover, in addition to live spiritually well what Christ says "Each day has enough trouble," living the present is also a matter of sanity. Instead, we live with the future in mind, anxiously, hanging in the vacuum of uncertainty, and in the past, drowned in regret and frustration.

Patristic Reading

Leo, the Great

Sermon XXII. On the Feast of the Nativity, II.

The Mystery of the Incarnation Demands Our Joy.

Let us be glad in the Lord, dearly-beloved, and rejoice with spiritual joy that there has dawned for us the day of ever-new redemption. of ancient preparation1 , of eternal bliss. For as the year rolls round, there recurs for us the commemoration2 of our salvation, which promised from the beginning, accomplished in the fulness of time will endure for ever; on which we are bound with hearts up-lifted3 to adore the divine mystery: so that what is the effect of God’s great gift may be celebrated by the Church’s great rejoicings. For God the almighty and merciful, Whose nature as goodness, Whose will is power, Whose work is mercy: as soon as the devil’s malignity killed us by the poison of his hatred, foretold at the verybeginning of the world the remedy His piety had prepared for the restoration of us mortals: proclaiming to the serpent that the seed of the woman should come to crush the lifting of his baneful head by its power, signifying no doubt that Christ would come in the flesh, God and man, Who born of a Virgin should by His uncorrupt birth condemn the despoiler of the human stock.4 Thus in the whole and perfect nature of true man was true God born, complete in what was His own, complete in what was ours. And “ours” we call what the Creator formed in us from the beginning and what He undertook to repair. For what, the deceiver brought in and the deceived admitted had no trace in the Saviour Nor because He partook of man’s weaknesses, did He therefore share our faults. He took the form of a slave without stain of sin, increasing the human and not diminishing the Divine: because that “emptying of Himself” whereby the Invisible made Himself visible and Creator and Lord Of all things as He was, wished to be mortal, was the condescension of Pity not the failing of Power5 .

II. The New Character of the Birth of Christ Explained.

Therefore, when the time came, dearly beloved, which had been fore-ordained for men’s redemption6 , there enters these lower parts of the world, the Son of God, descending from His heavenly throne and yet not quitting His Father’s glory, begotten in a new order, by a new nativity. In a new order, because being invisible in His own nature He became visible in ours, and He whom nothing could contain, was content to be contained: abiding before all time He began to be in time: the Lord of all things, He obscured His immeasurable majesty and took on Him the form of a servant: being God, that cannot suffer, He did not disdain to be man that can, and immortal as He is, to subject Himself to the laws of death7 . And by a new nativity He was begotten, conceived by a Virgin, born of a Virgin, without paternal desire, without injury to the mother’s chastity: because such a birth as knew no taint of human flesh, became One who was to be the Saviour of men, while it possessed in itself the nature of human substance. For when God was born in the flesh, God Himself was the Father, as the archangel witnessed to the Blessed Virgin Mary: “because the Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee: and therefore, that which shall be born of thee shall be called holy, the Son of God8 .” The origin is different but the nature like: not by intercourse with man but by the power of God was it brought about: for a Virgin conceived, a Virgin bare, and a Virgin she remained. Consider here not the condition of her that bare but the will of Him that was born; for He was born Man as He willed and was able. If you inquire into the truth of His nature, you must acknowledge the matter to be human: if you search for the mode of His birth, you must confess the power to be of God. For the Lord Jesus Christ came to do away with not to endure our pollutions: not to succumb to our faults but to heal them9 . He came that He might cure every weakness of oar corruptness and all the sores of our defiled souls: for which reason it behoved Him to be born by a new order, who brought to men’s bodies the new gift of unsullied purity. For the uncorrupt nature of Him that was born had to guard the primal virginity of the Mother, and the infused power of the Divine Spirit had to preserve in spotlessness and holiness that sanctuary which He had chosen for Himself: that Spirit (I say) who had determined to raise the fallen, to restore the broken, and by overcoming the allurements of the flesh to bestow on us in abundant measure the power of chastity: in order that the virginity which in others cannot be retained in child-bearing, might be attained by them at their second birth.

III. Justice Required that Satan Should Be Vanquished by God Made Man.

And, dearly beloved, this very fact that Christ chose to be born of a Virgin does it not appear to be part of the deepest design? I mean, that the devil should not be aware that Salvation had been born for the human race, and through the obscurity of that spiritual conception, when he saw Him no different to

others, should believe Him born in no different way to others. For when he observed that His nature was like that of all others, he thought that He had the same origin as all had: and did not understand that He was free from the bonds of transgression because he did not find Him a stranger to the weakness of mortality. For though the true10 mercy of God had infinitely many schemes to hand for the restoration of mankind, it chose that particular design which put in force for destroying the devil’s work, not the efficacy of might but the dictates of justice. For the pride of the ancient foe not undeservedly made good its despotic rights over all men, and with no unwarrantable supremacy tyrannized over those who had been of their own accord lured away from God’s commands to be the slaves of his will. And so there would be no justice in his losing the immemorial slavery of the human race, were he not conquered by that which he had subjugated. And to this end, without male seed Christ was conceived of a Virgin, who was fecundated not by human intercourse but by the Holy Spirit. And whereas in all mothers conception does not take place without stain of sin, this one received purification from the Source of her conception. For no taint of sin penetrated, where no intercourse occurred. Her unsullied virginity knew no lust when it ministered the substance. The Lord took from His mother our nature, not our fault11 . The slave’s form is, created without the slave’s estate, because the New Man is so commingled with the old, as both to assume the reality of our race and to remove its ancient flaw.

IV. The Incarnation Deceived the Devil and Caused Him to Break the Bond Under Which He Held Men.

When, therefore, the merciful and almighty Saviour so arranged the commencement of His human course as to hide the power of His Godhead which was inseparable from His manhood under the veil of our weakness, the crafty foe was taken off his guard and he thought that the nativity of the Child, Who was born for the salvation of mankind, was as much subject to himself as all others are at their birth. For he saw Him crying and weeping, he saw Him wrapped in swaddling clothes, subjected to circumcision, offering the sacrifice which the law required. And then he perceived in Him the usual growth of boyhood, and could have had no doubt of His reaching man’s estate by natural steps. Meanwhile, he inflicted insults, multiplied injuries, made use of curses, affronts, blasphemies, abuse, in a word, poured upon Him all the force of his fury and exhausted all the varieties of trial: and knowing how he had poisoned man’s nature, had no conception that He had no share in the first transgression Whose mortality he had ascertained by so many proofs. The unscrupulous thief and greedy robber persisted in assaulting Him Who had nothing of His own, and in carrying out the general sentence on original sin, went beyond the bond on which he rested12 , and required the punishment of iniquity from Him in Whom he found no fault. And thus the malevolent terms of the deadly compact are annulled, and through the injustice of an overcharge the whole debt is cancelled. The strong one is bound by his own chains, and every device of the evil one recoils on his own head. When the prince of the world is bound, all that he held in captivity is released13 . Our nature cleansed from its old contagion regains its honourable estate, death is destroyed by death, nativity is restored by nativity: since at one and the same time redemption does away with slavery, regeneration changes our origin, and faith justifies the sinner.

V. The Christian is Exhorted to Share in the Blessings of the Incarnation.

Whoever then thou art that devoutly and faithfully boastest of the Christian name, estimate this atonement at its right worth. For to thee who wast a castaway, banished from the realms of paradise, dying of thy weary exile, reduced to dust and ashes, without further hope of living, by the Incarnation of the Word was given the power to return from afar to thy Maker, to recognize thy parentage, to become free after slavery, to be promoted from being an outcast to sonship: so that, thou who wast born of corruptible flesh, mayest be reborn by the Spirit of God, and obtain through grace what thou hadst not

by nature, and, if thou acknowledge thyself the son of God by the spirit of adoption, dare to call God Father. Freed from the accusings of a bad conscience, aspire to the kingdom of heaven, do God’s will supported by the Divine help, imitate the angels upon earth, feed on the strength of immortal sustenance, fight fearlessly on the side of piety against hostile temptations, and if thou keep thy allegiance14 in the heavenly warfare, doubt not that thou wilt be crowned for thy victory in the triumphant camp of the Eternal King, when the resurrection that is prepared for the faithful has raised thee to participate in the heavenly Kingdom.

VI. The Festival Has Nothing to Do with Sunworship, as Some Maintain.

Having therefore so confident a hope, dearly beloved, abide firm in the Faith in which you are built: lest that same tempter whose tyranny over you Christ has already destroyed, win you back again with any of his wiles, and mar even the joys of the present festival by his deceitful art, misleading simpler souls with the pestilential notion of some to whom this our solemn feast day seems to derive its honour, not so much from the nativity of Christ as, according to them, from the rising of the new sun15 . Such men’s hearts are wrapped in total darkness, and have no growing perception of the true Light: for they are still drawn away by the foolish errors of heathendom, and because they cannot lift the eyes of their mind above that which their carnal sight beholds, they pay divine honourto the luminaries that minister to the world.Let not Christian souls entertain any suchwicked superstition and portentous lie. Beyond all measure are things temporal removed from the Eternal, things corporeal from the Incorporeal, things governed from the Governor. For though they possess a wondrous beauty, yet they have no Godhead to be worshipped. That power then, that wisdom, that majesty is to be adored which created the universe out of nothing, and framed by His almighty methods the substance of the earth and sky into what forms and dimensions He willed. Sun, moon, and stars may be most useful to us, most fair to look upon; but only if we render thanks to their Maker for them and worship God who made them, not the creation which does Him service. Then praise God, dearly beloved, in all His works and judgments. Cherish an undoubting belief in the Virgin’s pure conception. Honour the sacred and Divine mystery of man’s restoration with holy and sincere service. Embrace Christ born in our flesh, that you may deserve to see Him also as the God of glory reigning in His majesty, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit remains in the unity of the Godhead for ever and ever. Amen.

THE VATICAN'S TRIPLE CROWN : CHURCH, GOVERNMENT AND STATE

The Vatican is inserted into the international community because it is a state; once there, it behaves like a church.[1]  By setting up three legal identities and then adroitly switching from one to another, the Vatican has obtained unprecedented legal rights and international influence. This brilliant video sums it up: “Vatican City explained”.

How hat tricks led to national status
The post office and radio station gave the Vatican State
membership in two international organisations. This, in turn,
allowed the Holy See (the
government of both this plot
of land and the Church), to get
permanent observerstatus
at the United Nations in 1964. This gave the Vatican an
unbroken presence there and let it speak and vote at
most
UN conferences, all of these invaluable lobbying tools.

The Vatican switches identities according to convenience

» “The Vatican State has set up its structures on our territory”, announced an indignant Russian newscaster. But he was quickly informed that this was not at all the case — heavens, no — the Vatican was acting, not as a state, but as “a religious centre”. [2]

« Yet when the Orthodox clergy grumbled about Greece sponsoring the visit of a religious rival, their government was able to retort that — heavens, no — the Pope was acting not as a religious leader, but as a head of state. [3]

» However, in 2005 Archbishop Lajolo, the Vatican Foreign Minister, told Del Ponte, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, that he was powerless to help locate a war criminal believed to be hiding in a monastery, because the Vatican was not a state. [4]

« But, naturally, that did not stop the Pope claiming immunity from prosecution as a head of state. [5]

The Vatican — or Holy See, as it is officially known — performs this identity switch on a regular basis:
In recent years the Holy See has, when convenient, both asserted and renounced its statehood. Recently, and nearly simultaneously, the Holy See claimed statehood to ask for diplomatic immunity from sex abuse cases in the United States while denying statehood to refuse cooperation with the International Criminal Court. Often, when denying its state status, the Holy See instead claims to be a religious institution, accompanied by demands that the First Amendment of the United States Constitution protect the actions of the church after claims that members of the hierarchy mismanaged allegations of sexual abuse. [6]

Three separate legal entities

In fact, the Vatican actually has, not two, but three persona, and all are separate legal entities.

The Pontiff’s “triple crown” can serve to remind us of his role as primate of the Church, as CEO of its government and as ruler of a pocket-sized principality. That is to say, he presides over three distinct entities:

Citation:

♦  The Roman Catholic Church is an international organisation claiming to provide exclusive access to — or exemption from - certain destinations in the hereafter.
♦  The Holy See is an absolute monarchy, “by divine right” [7] whose ruler is appointed by God. [8] The Holy See is the government of both the Roman Catholic Church and of the Vatican State.
♦  The Vatican State, (officially “State of the Vatican City”), a country of less than half a square kilometre (the smallest in the world) with less than 600 citizens, most of them clergy or Swiss Guards.

The lesson of 1870: a state can end, but its government can live on in exile

We can begin this tale of multiple identities with the unification of Italy in 1870. That was when the Papal States were overrun by Italian troops and the Pope lost his kingdom in Central Italy. Early in the next century, however, with the help of Pope Pius XI, Mussolini came to power. In 1929 the Italian government made the Lateran Treaty with the Church government, the Holy See, which gave it back enough land to create the smallest country in the world, the Vatican State.

“The Papal States were extinguished by invasion in 1870 and the Vatican was created by fascist Italy in 1929 ... The notion that statehood can be created by another country's unilateral declaration is risible: the UK could launch Canterbury onto the international stage.”
           Geoffrey Robertson, QC

The Vatican once more had a plot of land to call its own. It had also learned a valuable lesson: that territory may be confiscated, but a government can survive, even in exile. The Vatican's government is the Holy See whicgoverns both the Vatican State and of a church which influences the minds of more than a billion people. This disembodied “government” offers a more secure base than real estate alone. In fact, probably as a response to objections to the Vatican being treated as a country, they neatly define themselves as eternal.

Canon 113.1 makes clear that “the Catholic Church and the Apostolic See have the nature of a moral person by divine law itself”. “That means that the Holy See, [...] will endure, even if it were to be reduced to its simplest expression in the person of the Pope and even to the end of time.” [9] In other words, unlike the Vatican State, the Catholic Church and the Holy See are eternal. Yet despite the claims of timelessness, was only in 1957 that the Vatican hit upon the idea of making the Holy See its persona on the international stage. [10]

This non-territorial “government”, the Holy See, is careful to hold the Vatican State at arm’s length as a “vassal” territory, rather than ruling it directly. [11] The Vatican is anxious to keep its international presence and privileges from depending on a plot of land defended by a hundred and ten men armed with pikes. (A former guardsman says that their weaponry now includes tear gas and pepper spray to protect the Holy Father from “religious fanatics”. [12])

♦  How the Lateran Treaty made the Catholic Church into a state
♦  Canon Law in action: Was the Papal State a “perfect society”?

The world's smallest microstate

Like the Sultanate of Brunei in Borneo and the Kingdom of Swaziland, the Vatican City State, is an absolute monarchy, This makes it ineligible to join the Council of Europe or the European Union. However, the Lateran Treaty (with Mussolini in 1929) allowed it to mint its own coins and these are now legal tender throughout the Eurozone.

From its tiny plot of land the Holy See runs its diplomatic service, with “apostolic nuncios” serving as accredited ambassadors to countries round the globe. However, this microstate isn’t even big enough to hold the offices of the ambassadors acredited to the Holy See. The foreign embassies must be located in Rome outside the borders of the Vatican State. In fact, the Italian Embassy to the Vatican sits on Italian territory.

The Vatican State is also too small to accommodate the patriarchal basilicas in Rome, let alone the pope's summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, and therefore it has arranged for extra-territorial privileges (similar to those enjoyed by foreign embassies in a host country [13]) at 28 places in Italy.

Even so, the tiny Vatican State has proved invaluable as a springboard into international diplomacy. If it weren’t for the Vatican State, the Holy See’s diplomacy could hardly be expected to function in practical terms.

State visit or pilgrimmage, according to convenience

The pope's official titles reflect both his religious and territorial identities. On the one hand, he is the Vicar of Christ and Successor of the Prince of the Apostles (Peter), etc., and on the other, Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City. And when he goes abroad he continues to juggle his two identities.

Paul VI, “the Pilgrim Pope”, became the first pontiff to visit five continents, while John Paul II managed to visit 130 countries. Here, as usual, the different roles are adroitly combined. As “pilgrimages” these trips are liturgical spectacles – and as “state visits” they get paid for by the host country.

The advantages sovereign state status confers, including banking unsupervised by any banking authority, the ability to issue passports, the granting of diplomatic immunity and membership of international organisations at the state level, should not be underestimated. [14]

The secret costs of papal visits
Papal trips: both “pastoral visits” and “state visits”

Escaping accountability through diplomatic immunity and refusing extradition

The Vatican also uses statehood to get it off the hook morally and legally for clerical child abuse.

In 2005 the Vatican asked the American Government to put an end to lawsuits against Catholic churches there. It reminded the Americans that the Holy See was a “sovereign entity” and suggested that they “recall the immunity for its acts that international law anticipates.” [15] And, indeed, a few months later “the U.S. Justice Department […] told a Texas court that a lawsuit accusing Pope Benedict XVI of conspiring to cover up the sexual molestation of three boys by a seminarian should be dismissed because the pontiff enjoys immunity as head of state of the Holy See.” [16]

Papal knighthood for staving off a threat to Vatican statehood

International law expert Geoffrey Robertson has questioned the statehood of the Vatican in terms of all four criteria of the Montevideo Convention. However, the Vatican can count on many allies. This medal was given to one of them, a UN diplomat who headed off a challenge to the statehood of the Holy See during its unsuccessful attempt in 2004 to get full membership. The Order of Pius IX is commonly awarded to laymen who have advanced Vatican interests at the international level.

Then in 2010 the US Supreme Court refused to review whether the Vatican is a sovereign state, thereby refusing to question the broad legal immunity from prosecution over the sexual abuse of minors by priests in the United States. [17] This meant that suits against the Vatican in the US could only be pursued under an exception to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act of 1976, which involves employees acting within the scope of their employment. [18]

However, in 2012 a US court blocked this way to breach the immunity of the Vatican. An Oregon federal court ruled that there wasn't "a true employment relationship" between a clerical child molester and the Holy See. [19]

The Vatican has continued to use its statehood to try to keep from having to pay damages to children abused by its own priests. In 2013 it went so far as to tell a United Nations committee that it was morally and legally responsible only for abuse perpetrated within the tiny enclave of the Vatican City State. [20]

And when they didn't buy this, the Vatican gave them a lecture, about how the “religious obedience” required of clerics by canons 331 and 590 did not mean that the Holy See had control over what they did (#7). (Canon 331 says that the pope "possesses supreme, full, immediate, and universal ordinary power in the Church, which he is always able to exercise freely" and Canon 590 says that priests are "bound to obey the Supreme Pontiff as their highest superior by reason of the sacred bond of obedience".) But, apparently none of this can be used as evidence of anything since, as the Vatican told the committee, it's the only one who's allowed to interpret Canon Law (#8). [21]

That same year the Vatican also hid behind its statehood to avoid the prosecution of a senior papal diplomat, Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski. It secretly whisked the papal nuncio out of the Dominican Republic to keep him from having to answer accusations of child abuse. [22] Then, when he was safely on its territory, it invoked his diplomatic immunity as an excuse not to hand him back. The following year, to distance his alleged crimes from the Church, he was defrocked and his diplomatic immunity ceased, but the Vatican's statehood still protected him. The Vatican continued to refuse to let him face justice by saying that it didn't extradite Vatican citizens. [23]

According to the Vatican's 2011 citizenship law, the ex-cleric is safe, providing he remains in the Vatican State. Of course, now his citizenship can no longer rest on his "office or service". However, just as canon law allows the pope to do anything he wants, the laws of the Vatican State let him specially grant citizenship to a defrocked paedophile. [24] So long as the pope lets Mr. Wesolowski keep his Vatican citizenship and he stays within Vatican territory, he should remain safe from prosecution by any other country.

It has even been speculated that this is why Benedict XVI has also retired in this legally secure enclave. [25] Does this give a modern meaning to “Prisoner of the Vatican”?

Concordats “treaties” that can't be broken without Vatican permission

In addition to papal visits and immunity for clerical criminals, the Vatican diplomatic apparatus has another important function. It allows the negotiation of “treaties”, called “concordats”. These agreements with other sovereign states in order to secure privileges for the Church. Because they are made with the Holy See, rather than with the local Catholic archbishop, these concordats can generally override national laws. This, in turn, means that privileges, once granted to the Church, are removed from democratic control – forever. [26]

What are Concordats?
Twenty tricks to get a concordat through

Manoeuvring to join the United Nations

The Vatican is not content to run a church which influences the minds of more than a billion people. It wants global influence through international bodies. Perhaps the Vatican's greatest benefit from statehood is the way this has given it to infiltrate the United Nations. To accomplish this, it has skilfully exploited its multiple identities for almost a century until finally the goal of full membership seems almost within its grasp.

“The Roman Catholic Church is a cross between a nation state and a multinational corporation with branches almost everywhere.

The first article of its Constitution gives absolute power to the Pope. There is neither appeal nor recourse against a decision or decree of the Roman Pontiff. (Canon 333 § 3)”
 — Jeffrey Nicholls

In 1929, the very year it was founded, the Vatican State joined the Universal Postal Union, and later on, the International Telecommunications Union, as well. [27] Membership in these international bodies then allowed the Holy See in 1957 to get “observer” privileges at the United Nations (as opposed to the mere “consultative status” accorded to most non-governmental organizations – including other religions). [28]

In 1964 it managed to have these privileges upgraded, when the Holy See acquired “permanent observer” status at the UN. This permitted an unbroken presence at the UN and access to all UN forums. Both of these are invaluable for lobbying at important UN events such as the Conference on Population and Development. [29] This conference was strategic for the Vatican, since developing nations rely heavily on the UN to help out with social services. As a result, people living in these countries, regardless of their religious affiliation, are increasingly subject to Catholic agencies which enforce Church dogma – and these policies condemn millions to unwanted pregnancies and AIDS. [30]

In 2003 the Vatican tried to take the final step to reach its goal. It let it be known that it would be open to becoming a full member of the UN. [31] The attempt proved premature and, threatened with an embarrassing challenge to its statehood, the Vatican backed off and the next year accepted a more modest upgrade. It obtained “enhanced observer status”, which has been likened to a “full member state, just without the vote.” This now lets it take part in General Assembly debates and exert still more Church influence. As the Vatican’s Permanent Observer at the UN remarked serenely, “We have no vote because this is our choice.” [32] At the same time he noted pointedly that this latest move “does not close any path for the future.” [33] In fact, the satisfaction expressed by the Vatican when the Palestinian Authority was also given observer status at the United Nations as a “non-member state”, suggests that the Church may hope to use the Palestinians as a wedge and further improve its own status in tandem with the PLO. [34]

Pushing its reproductive policies on women worldwide

Meanwhile, the lack of a vote has not prevented the Vatican from taking an active part in meetings of UN groups such as the Commission on the Status of Women. This forum is meant to promote gender equality, which Vatican uses its influence to oppose. There it bolsters others in this aim. The Norwegian Minister for Equality noted that “The Vatican, conservative religious forces within the United States and Europe, Catholic and Muslim countries are joining forces to stop women from gaining sexual rights.” [35] The Holy See does not have the right to vote, but its permanent observer status enables it to lobby. It is claimed that “one tactic of the Holy See in the past has been to personally call ministers to persuade them to take a particular stance at the CSW talks, even if it flies in the face of a country's national polices”. [36] = The Vatican behind the scene promote the gender equality and abortion. He's part of other organizations who push the agenda. On the scene, he's a permanent observer status, but in fact, the Jesuit and the Vatican control the UN.

This strategy has paid off. In 2012 a group of conservative states managed to prevent a decision to put gays' and women's rights above the forces of "tradition". One wonders who organised this coalition.... [37]

The Vatican continues to try to use UN conferences to work its way by degrees into full membership. Angry demands to be included as full participants in conferences are meant to set precedents. [38] Already its participation in key UN conferences has allowed it to block some attempts to let the world's women plan their families. The triple-tiered Papal headgear is being used to engineer a major human tragedy.

In 1939 one Mr. Moriggi was convicted in an Italian court for stealing from the Lateran Museum, whereupon he argued that Italy couldn't punish him, as the Museum was an extraterritorial part of the Vatican State. The court rejected this and, in so doing, explained the legal nature of the Vatican's extraterritorial holdings in Italy.

POPE ON ECUMENISM : DESPITE WHAT'S UNRESOLVED, LET'S FOCUS ON NEXT STEPS

"If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. 20 Like the nations the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God."
Deuteronomy 8:19-20

Speaks to Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany on 'Common Ecumenical Journey'

Vatican City, December 18, 2014 (Zenit.org) Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis says that despite open questions in ecumenical dialogue, Christians should not resign themselves to a lack of unity and should instead "concentrate on the next step possible."

The Pope said this today in an address to representatives of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Germany and the Ecumenical Commission of the German Bishops' Conference during their ecumenical visit to Rome.

The Pope reminded them that the common goal is unity and we shouldn’t let theological differences halt the “common ecumenical journey” taking place.

"Let us not forget that, together, we are following a path of friendship, of mutual esteem and of theological research, a path that makes us look to the future full of hope," the Pope underscored.

The official dialogue between Lutherans and Catholics, after almost 50 years of intensive work, Francis noted, has achieved remarkable progress.

Saying this was made possible with the help of God, he noted there currently exists a solid foundation of sincere friendship lived in faith and spirituality.

"Despite the theological differences that remain on various questions of faith, collaboration and fraternal coexistence characterize the life of our Churches and Ecclesial Communities, committed today in a common ecumenical path," he said, noting the Catholic Church considers ecumenism as one its essential responsibilities.

The Pope acknowledged that "the common objective of the full and visible unity of Christians sometimes seems to be distant due to the different interpretations, within the dialogue, on what the Church is and her unity."

But he lauded work being done by the Commission of bilateral dialogue between the German Bishops' Conference and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany on the question of "God and the dignity of man."

Of great relevance, he noted, are issues related to the dignity of the human person at the beginning and end of his life, as well as those related to the family, marriage and sexuality.

Ecumenical dialogue can no longer be separated from the reality and the life of our Churches.," he said, noting both religions should be encouraged to, with God and the Spirit’s help, “further steps towards unity and not to limit ourselves simply to what we have already achieved.”

In the hope that your fraternal visit contributes to reinforce the good collaboration that exists between Lutherans and Catholics in Germany and in the world,” the Pope concluded, “I cordially invoke from my heart God's blessings on you and your community.”

JERUSALEM INTERFAITH FORUM : RELIGION AND RECONCILIATION

Written by Dr. Nurit Hirschfeld

Wednesday, November 26, 2014

I'billin, Israel - During a time of escalating tension among religious groups, leaders of Israel’s four main religions came together for an interfaith forum on "Religion and Reconciliation." The Jerusalem Forum for Interfaith Understanding and Cooperation among Religions held the event, on the theme “Religion and Reconciliation,” on Nov. 26, 2014, in the Mar Elias Education Center in the northern Arab town of I'billin.

The center, which bears the Arab name for the prophet Elijah and is located at the top of a hill, was founded by Archbishop Elias Shakur of the Greek Catholic Church, who hosted the event with the support of Father Masoud Abu-Hatoum, a dedicated Ambassador for Peace.

Despite the rainy weather, the 27 participants—Druze, Muslims, Christians and Jews—came to demonstrate their determination and strong faith in the goals of peace and reconciliation.

Dr. Nurit Hirschfeld, director of the interfaith forum, opened the meeting by expressing the hope that “we can act as a family by supporting one another in times of difficulties, while continuing to strive and work together for peace.”

Quoting UPF founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon from the book World Scripture, she read: “If each side insists, ‘I exist for myself,’ they can never be reconciled. To achieve the goal of peace, people on both sides need to take the position, ‘I exist for you.’ Then they can come to the point of consoling one another. Peace can arise only when we say to our opponent, ‘I am here for you.’”

The Druze delegation, led by Sheik Samich Natur, expressed their commitment to peace and shared heartwarming stories of people transcending the borders of religion or ethnicity. One story told of a synagogue in the Arab town of Shefar-Am being cared for by a Muslim family.

Archbishop Shakur offered a warm welcome and mentioned our collective responsibility to raise our voices for peace. “Religions should act in unity, based on their common grounds, rather than be divided by differences,” he said. Politicians can sign peace or cease-fire agreements, he said, but those who actually make peace are people of faith. “Peace starts from the level of the individual, and moves on to the level of the family, the neighbors and the whole society,” he concluded.

Professor Yoram Hirschfeld from Tel Aviv University talked about the simple fact that we are first and foremost human beings. “When and how did it happen,” he expressed painfully, “that we started judging people according to their religion, race or color?” He added, “When I meet a person, I would want to know his personality, interests and hobbies, family; only much later would I ask about his religion or ethnic group!”

Rabbi Yaakov Luft from Mevaseret Zion, a suburb of Jerusalem, talked about the important role of religious leaders in bringing peace to the region. “Religious power is strong; if we ignore it, peace cannot be established,” he said. Those who say that religions have brought only damage and ruin to humanity should think again and investigate the atrocities and lost lives that occurred in the name of atheistic philosophies like communism or ultra-nationalist ideologies such as fascism. “Indeed, religious leaders should act peacefully and not use their power to act in evil ways,” he said. Rabbi Luft concluded by touching on the importance of educational programs in promoting peace.

Mr. Yaron Hirschfeld from the Jewish-Arab friendship association Reut-Shchenim briefly responded to Rabbi Luft's comments. He said he understands why many people reject religion, since those who use religion for violence and fanaticism are often much louder. “I want to hear more religious leaders speak for peace and act for peace,” he said. “The voice of peace should be heard louder and louder; otherwise even those who have long believed in the path of peace can lose hope and stop believing in peace.”

The meeting ended with a tour of the beautiful Mar Elias church, with its many inter-religious and interfaith motifs, including the church’s bronze gate showing an etching of Jesus gathering children to him from various religions of the world.
