RUSSIA AND IRAN SIGN DEFENSE DEAL, 'MAY RESOLVE' S300 MISSILE DELIVERY ISSUE

Published time: January 20, 2015 21:22

Still from Ruptly video

Moscow and Tehran have signed military cooperation deal that implies wider collaboration in personnel training and counter-terrorism activities. It may also resolve the situation concerning the delivery of Russian S300 missiles, Iranian media reported.

Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan, signed the document during a visit by Russia’s top brass to Iran’s capital on Tuesday.

Under the new agreement, the broadened cooperation will include military personnel training exchanges, increased counter-terrorism cooperation and enhanced capabilities for both countries’ Navies to use each other’s ports more frequently.

According to the Iranian news agency FARS, the two sides have also resolved problems concerning the delivery of Russia's S300 missile defense systems to Iran. However, Moscow is yet to make an official comment regarding the defense system.

The $800 million contract to deliver S300 air defense missile systems to Iran was cancelled in 2010 by then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, to fall in line with UN sanctions imposed on Iran due to its disputed nuclear program. In turn, Tehran has filed a currently pending $4 billion lawsuit against Russia to Geneva's arbitration court.

"The two countries have decided to settle the S300 issue," Iran's Defense Ministry said, as cited by the Interfax news agency. No further details have been provided.

ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Laboon (DDG 58) is halfway through Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) with the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG) in preparation for an upcoming scheduled deployment.

Laboon left Naval Station Norfolk Jan. 6, and its crew has stayed busy over the last 14 days with exercises involving visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS), routine flight operations, electronic warfare and counter-targeting.

"COMPTUEX is a great opportunity to put into practice all of the training we have received during the basic phase over the past 12 months," said Laboon's 1st Lieutenant, Ensign Joseph Lillie, from Lakewood, Ohio. "There is no question that our ship is better prepared for deployment because of the work we are doing out here."

Led by Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 4, COMPTUEX is an exercise designed to evaluate the mission-readiness of deployable assets as it relates to their ability to react to training scenarios and perform as an integrated unit.

Laboon is scheduled to finish COMPTUEX in early February, following the successful completion of operational training evolutions, such as scheduled live-fire exercises. Upon successful completion of COMPTUEX, Laboon would be certified to deploy to provide an overseas forward presence maintaining maritime security abroad.

The TRCSG consists of the staff of Carrier Strike Group 12, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 2, and her ships the guided-missile destroyers USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81), USS Forest Sherman (DDG 98) and USS Farragut (DDG 99). Laboon and USS McFaul (DDG 74) are participating in the TRCSG COMPTUEX as independent deployers.

IS IT TIME FOR STATES TO BAN ISLAM?

The devil also use Bible verses to push his agenda. Be on your guard, this is not our war. It's God judgment upon the earth. This war is on the table for long time , "And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword."

Revelation 6:4, and this is the Messiah who opened the seals. He will use His enemy, the Roman Catholic (inquisition) to punish the world who worship demons and who forgot their God, the Creator who gave them His laws to have peace in the land. Now, comes the time of judgment. Don’t be part of this crusade. We have to be patient and just to continue to sanctify our life, until the Lord will come back to fight His enemies.

: "The Third World War must be fomented by taking advantage of the differences caused by the "agentur" of the "Illuminati" between the political Zionists and the leaders of Islamic World. The war must be conducted in such a way that Islam (the Moslem Arabic World) and political Zionism (the State of Israel) mutually destroy each other. Meanwhile the other nations, once more divided on this issue will be constrained to fight to the point of complete physical, moral, spiritual and economical exhaustion…We shall unleash the Nihilists and the atheists, and we shall provoke a formidable social cataclysm which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of absolute atheism, origin of savagery and of the most bloody turmoil. Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with Christianity, whose deistic spirits will from that moment be without compass or direction, anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of Lucifer, brought finally out in the public view. This manifestation will result from the general reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of Christianity and atheism, both conquered and exterminated at the same time."

One high-profile blogger says it’s time to propose legislation to ban Islam. Tim Brown, of Freedom Outpost and Sons of Liberty Media, is no stranger to controversy. If you follow any of his widely published articles, or spend any time on the websites that Tim edits, you will quickly realize that Tim is, unapologetically, a devout Christian who backs his worldviews with Biblical truth.

However, has Tim Brown gone too far this time?

Me and Jason, my co-host on The Liberty Brothers Radio Show, were discussing a conversation that Tim Brown and I were having a day previous in which Tim stated that he was going to pursue legislation to ban Islam in his home state of South Carolina.

Jason, just as I did when Tim first told me, stated that such a law, if enacted, would violate the First Amendment. As the conversation progressed, I broke from the discussion and called Tim to see if he would be willing to come on and talk about why he thinks that South Carolina needs to ban Islam. As luck would have it, Tim was available and spent nearly 15 minutes with us LIVE.

In his usual style, Tim referenced Scripture to back-up his rationale; but Tim also referenced the long forgotten, Mayflower Compact as one source to lend further credence to his ban Islam proposal. Tim also pointed out that, like many Christians, followers of Islam do not really investigate the true tenets of their faith; and if they were “true believers” they would want to kill all non-believers, a group that would consist of many who would be reading this very article.

In the following interview, I mostly keep quiet as Jason expresses his concerns to Tim, and Tim responds with his reasons to introduce legislation to ban Islam.
Is it necessary for individual States to even begin the conversation about banning a religion with over a billion followers? Are Mosques all over America merely training grounds for an “Islamic Jihad” to be launched against an unsuspecting population? This and more in the following interview discussing the proposal to ban Islam in South Carolina.

From Secretary of Navy Public Affairs

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Ray Mabus announced the establishment of Task Force Innovation (TFI) within the Department of the Navy Jan. 22.

Consisting of subject matter experts from across the department, TFI has been charged with developing a comprehensive innovation agenda for the Navy and Marine Corps.

Specific tasking for TFI includes the creation of the Department of the Navy's innovation vision, the development of bold short and long-term innovation goals and metrics, oversight of coordination across the department and the removal of bureaucratic roadblocks preventing the achievement of these goals.

"From non-state actors, to rising powers, today's threats to our national security and our interests are not just becoming more numerous, they are also accelerating," said Mabus. "Establishing Task Force Innovation will help us develop the best ways to improve our systems and ensure that we are also able to embrace our innovative ideas at a pace that keeps us ahead."

The task force, comprised of special advisors to the Secretary of the Navy as well as representatives from the offices of the Assistant Secretaries of the Navy, the Deputy Undersecretary of the Navy (Policy), the General Counsel, and the Office of Naval Research will focus its efforts on three main areas.

The first, according to a memorandum signed by Mabus establishing TFI, is leveraging innovative practices to create and maintain an adaptive workforce.

This area of focus will involve evaluating the Department of the Navy's culture, policies and processes to ensure the Navy and Marine Corps are attracting, developing and retaining the best talent while creating a risk-tolerant environment that allows these men and women to anticipate and solve the services' most demanding problems.

"This isn't about creating an innovative workforce," said Mabus. "This is about harnessing the creative energy which our Sailors, Marines and civilians already have."

TFI's second area of focus will be ensuring the Department of the Navy is effectively viewing information as an asset.

"We develop large amounts of data in the Navy and Marine Corps - everything from measuring our acquisition programs to the lessons learned from deployments and operations," Mabus said. "We should be taking advantage of modern advances in computing power and analytical tools to ensure we are using all this information as a strategic asset."

TFI has also been charged with rethinking how the Department of the Navy values and shares information to ensure that processes within the Navy and Marine Corps allow the services to move at the speed required to perform their mission in the information age.

The final area of focus for TFI will be ensuring emerging operational capabilities have a clear and expedient path to the fleet. The new concepts specifically being addressed by TFI will include adaptive force packages, unmanned systems, non-lethal weapons, directed energy weapons and additive manufacturing.

"The Navy and Marine Corps need to continue to press forward with emerging capabilities and our next generation weapons and operating concepts," said Mabus.

TFI will have 60 days to provide a detailed innovation agenda clearly stating the actions required to prepare the Department of the Navy for the future. They will report directly to the Undersecretary of the Navy.

"Innovation requires bringing together novel ideas and repurposing resources in order to fundamentally do things differently and to create beneficial outcomes," said Mabus. "This involves using our greatest asset to its full potential - the intellectual capital of our remarkable workforce. I am confident that by working together, we will develop creative solutions to the most demanding challenges that lie ahead of us."

Story Number: NNS150122-04Release Date: 1/22/2015 9:17:00 AM

From Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea Public Affairs

PYEONGTAEK, Republic of Korea (NNS) -- The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Mustin (DDG 89) arrived in Pyeongtaek, Republic of Korea, for a port visit Jan. 21.

The ship, which is forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, is currently on a routine patrol and conducting bilateral training with the ROK navy in waters around the Korean peninsula.

"Mustin's visit to Pyeongtaek and our continued collaboration with our Republic of Korea Navy counterparts is another great opportunity for us to reinforce teamwork and interoperability that make our navies such effective partners," said Cmdr. Joe Torres, commanding officer of Mustin.

While in Pyeongtaek, Mustin Sailors will participate in community relations projects with the ROK Navy and citizens in the local community. Additionally, crew members will conduct training sessions and engagements with their ROK Navy counterparts.

With a crew of 380 Sailors, Mustin can carry out independent operations or with an associated carrier strike group. As a multi-mission platform, the ship is currently supporting the U.S. 7th Fleet as it maintains routine presence in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region in order to promote security and peace, and develop partnerships with partners and allies.

‘ASSAD, HEZBOLLAH AND IRAN ARE TRAINING LOCAL MILITIAS TO COMBAT ISRAEL’

Shiite fighters on the Golan ‘will not stop at Syria,’ an opposition commander tells The Times of Israel

By Elhanan Miller January 22, 2015, 6:22 am http://www.timesofisrael.com/assad-hezbollah-and-iran-are-training-local-mi…

The Free Syria Army has been monitoring Iranian, Lebanese, and even Russian soldiers on the border with Israel, a Syrian opposition field commander told The Times of Israel on Wednesday, as his forces plan a siege on the government-held regional capital of Quneitra.

In a rare Skype interview from Amman, Jordan, where he is currently on leave, a battalion commander who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Mughniyeh, General Mohammad Ali Allahdadi and the 10 others killed by an apparent Israeli airstrike on Sunday were likely touring the Quneitra area, in part, to raise the morale of Shiite soldiers fighting alongside the Assad regime.

But “they also may have been there to plan something which we do not know of,” he allowed. “They may have received new weaponry.”

Despite the widespread presence of his men on the ground, the comments of the Free Syrian Army commander revealed how little his forces know about the movements and preparations of Hezbollah and the Iranians in the area.

The Free Syrian Army regularly monitors the radio communications of pro-Assad fighters on the Golan Heights, picking up conversations in Lebanese-accented Arabic, Persian, and even Russian. A Russian commander was captured by the Islamist group Al-Nusra Front during the battle of Al-Hamidiyah, when the Quneitra border crossing was seized from the Assad regime last August, he said. All pro-Assad fighters in the area currently operate under “Shiite” command, whether Lebanese or Iranian. Russia and Iran are staunch allies of Bashar Assad.

Shiite fighters trained by the Assad regime, Iran and Hezbollah under the title “National Defense Forces” are present in the towns of Deir al-‘Adas, Kanaker and Deir Maker west of Quneitra, where they are defending the road to Damascus with rocket propelled-grenades, mortars, and heat-guided anti-tank missiles.
“Our pressure has intensified against the Assad regime,” the rebel commander said, noting that his troops were preparing to besiege the city of Quneitra, held by the regime, but were forced to delay the attack due to a massive snowstorm.

Lebanese news agency El-Nashra reported on Wednesday that Iran and Hezbollah, in coordination with the Assad regime, were preparing “a large strategic plan” for Quneitra. The plan included engaging the IDF along the 150-kilometer (93-mile) Israeli border with Syria and Lebanon, and training local militias on the Syrian Golan to combat Israel.

“The calculations of Hezbollah and Iran for the region go beyond merely a tactical, limited response to the Israeli air assassination in Quneitra,” read the report in El-Nashra. “The rules of the game dominating the area only yesterday will change.”

The rebel commander opined that the Shiite forces indeed intended to engage Israel more significantly than in the past, making Israeli cooperation with moderate opposition forces on the Syrian Golan more urgent than ever before.

“You have a historic opportunity to win the Syrian people, which has been disillusioned by the entire world,” he said, addressing the Israeli public. “We want to fight alongside you. The Shiites will not stop in Syria; they have a much larger project that endangers you as well as us.”

The Syrian commander also implored Israel to establish a system for transferring into Israel Syrian opposition fighters injured in battle.

“At the moment the entry of patients is sporadic and dependent on individuals. We want it to be public and established, so that the Syrian public knows that Israel is the only state that receives Syrian patients unconditionally.”

I was going to brush this off as a Gee up ... Until i done some more searching . Im sure if i find anything that tells me this isnt true ill say BS ,  but for now > ITS plausible . Check this link out - read it. Then a comment caught my attention from a worker who works at National Labs involved with nukes. He sais this "I am a contracted employee for two of our national labs, one of those that deals with the development, testing and safeguarding of these items. I can tell you that they are considered essential employees during this “shutdown” and have never left their post in past shutdown situations or disasters, but they received notice last week to plan for the safe, secure shutdown of the entire facility by Oct 21st. Almost within the same day, two of the top level managers at the facility resigned and moved to “better opportunities” – during a shutdown? I’m not much for conspiracy and hearsay but both of these actions struck me as odd considered that, at least in the MSM’s eyes we’re capable of avoiding the Oct 17th default. Yet both of these labs are preparing to close shop as if they aren’t planning on coming back any time soon." ......... them dots are getting to obvious to join dont you think  http://modernsurvivalblog.com/terrorism-war/nukes-transferred-and-top-nuclear-commanders-fired/

Three individuals have just saved 300 million lives in the past 2 weeks. They saved the 90% of the population that would be dead if Bathhouse Barry had not been stopped from using 3 nuclear devices against the American populace. 2 Army Generals and 1 Navy Admiral, whose duties included the safeguarding and oversight of the nuclear arsenal. Obama ordered that 3 nukes be transported in a major breach of protocol and safety regulations of long standing. He wanted it NOW, and these officers were made aware of what the intention was. The admiral had the one Navy nuke taken 600 miles off South Carolina and detonated deep in the ocean. The other 2 nukes disappeared thanks to the handiwork of the 2 Generals, the numbers 1 and 2 men in charge of the Army ordinance. These three men are heroes of the highest order. Look up the events of 2 Generals and 1 Admiral being dismissed in the past two weeks and you will find their names. They saved your lives and the lives of 300 million of your fellow citizens.

Mr. Obama's intention was to set off the three nukes to devastate all computer related systems on the continent thus taking America back 200 years and guaranteeing a total breakdown in society and with in one year the death of 300 million Americans. To see how this would be possible read, "One Second After". You can get it on Amazon.

We peered over the edge of the precipice of the death of our civilization and have lived to tell the tale. 3 heroes stood tall for America and the mad man in the white house was stopped for the first time in his life. He is unsure of what to do just now and he does not possess the keys to the nuclear submarines nor the two nukes that are now hidden. For the first time in his life someone said no, meant it, and stopped him from murder and devastation. The next few days are critical. Be afraid and go to prepper sites to find out how to save your family, if you can. -- Dr. Jim Garrow, Nov. 18, 2013

In the condominium complex in Casa Grande, Arizona, where I have a unit, a visit was made yesterday by a group of 4 men in a black Suburban with lots of antenna's on the roof. The management of our large group of condo's was asked to open the door of my unit. The badges were a combination of many different alphabet agencies including my former one. Interesting because after I posted about EMP's and missing nukes my phone rang late in the evening and I was requested to cease and desist. My posts have been removed. I am not however repentant, nor cowed. If anything like this happens again I have instructed people to begin the release of documents and information as per prepared plans in the hands of these people. Obama is known for overplaying his hand, and now should be known far and wide as a dangerous amateur. He may have gotten Breitbart, Hastings and Clancy, but they were just writers. I hope that he enjoys the protests today in DC. -- Dr. Jim Garrow, Nov. 19, 2013

NEW TOP MARINE CORPS GENERAL RELEASES PLAN TO SHAKE UP THE SERVICE

Access/Area Denial: The Evolution of Modern Warfare

Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., testifies during a U.S. Senate hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington on Thursday, July 17, 2014. Dunford, who became the 36th Marine Corps commandant in October 2014, released his planning guidance on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015.

The Washington Post
Published: January 23, 2015

My initial planning guidance is intended to outline how we will set the conditions to fight and win against future enemies.

The new top general in the Marine Corps released a 16-page plan on Friday detailing his vision for the service, emphasizing a realignment of troops to meet demands in the Pacific and Africa, better coordination with Special Operations units, and new psychological testing to assess resiliency in recruits.

Commandant Gen. Joseph F. Dunford’s planning guidance is intended to outline how the Marine Corps “will set the conditions to fight and win against future enemies,” he wrote. He took over as the service’s top officer on Oct. 17, replacing the retiring Gen. James F. Amos.

Dunford, who previously served as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, said in his planning guidance that the need for Marines is strong, citing recent operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Liberia and South Sudan. He outlined broad changes, including a new plan that will provide each four-star geographic combatant commander with a “properly tailored and effective Marine component.

“This will include changes to General Officer assignments and organization/manning of the staffs,” Dunford wrote. “The sources realigned to our components will come from other headquarters elements… The desired end state is the effective employment and support of assigned, allocated and apportioned Marine Corps forces.”

The service will focus heavily in 2015 and 2016 on preparing to fight from the sea in an “anti-access, area denial” environment, military-speak for an area in which enemies can contest U.S. troops reaching it with a variety of weapons. Fighting from the sea has long been considered a Marine Corps mission, but the service did much less of as it deployed tens of thousands of troops at a time to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The commandant also signaled a desire to have Marine units work more closely with Special Operations troops — something Maj. Gen. Joseph Osterman, the top general overseeing Marine Special Operations, also indicated was coming in a recent interview with Checkpoint. Marines and Special Operations units are “highly complementary,” Dunford wrote, making it “only natural” that the service should improve its ability to operate with U.S. Special Operations Command.

“To strengthen interoperability in the future we will experiment with new concepts and technologies to achieve integrated effects on tomorrow’s battlefield through the complementary capabilities of the Marine Corps and SOF,” Dunford wrote, using an acronym for Special Operations Forces.

With fewer Navy ships available than there once was, the Marine Corps also will aggressively develop plans to use “alternate platforms,” Dunford said. He does not elaborate in the plan released Friday, but the service has been exploring deploying troops from new, smaller vessels rather than just the amphibious assault ships that traditionally carry Marines.

In particular, Dunford prioritized developing a plan for the deployment of Marines designed to help in times of crisis in Africa and a unit that deploys on a rotational basis each year to Darwin, Australia.

We will begin to implement a plan in 2015, the results of which will inform subsequent operational deployments, capability development and doctrine for alternative platform employment,” Dunford wrote.

Dunford also calls for changes at home. While attending boot camp “changes a person forever,” he said, the service should explore adopting new psychological testing for recruits to make sure they are capable of not only becoming a Marine, but successfully completing their time in service.

We will quickly assess the efficacy of available psychological screening tools currently used by special operations forces, law enforcement organizations, and industry,” the general said. “The end state is to enhance the quality and resilience of the force – thereby making us more combat ready.”

VP-26 BEGINS HISTORIC LAST LAST DEPLOYMENT OF THE P-3C ORION

Story Number: NNS150126-05Release Date: 1/26/2015 8:19:00 AM

By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) John S. Smolinski, Naval Air Station Jacksonville Public Affairs

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- The "Tridents" of Patrol Squadron (VP) 26 begin their last deployment with the P-3C Orion aircraft with a send-off of their first two planes out of Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Jan. 22.

The historic occasion was attended by senior leadership, family and friends of VP-26 Sailors and members of the Jacksonville community.

"This is a historic deployment for you," said Rear Adm. Matthew J. Carter, commander of Patrol and Reconnaissance Group. "You are the last operational P-3 squadron on the East Coast. Once you go, we are a P-8 only force. That does not diminish anything you do with this aircraft. America has given us the best, and this aircraft is still a very capable airplane."

Carter knows firsthand how much the P-3 community has contributed to the success of the Navy's mission. He served as both executive officer and commanding officer of VP-26, and he told the Sailors just how special it is to wear the Trident colors.

"We have been flying this aircraft for 50 years," said Carter. "The whole squadron, from the admin department, the maintainers and the aircrew has continued to go out and do great things, and I know you are going to go out on this deployment and do great."

Preparing the squadron for a deployment presents its challenges which include everything from packing up parts and equipment, preparing junior Sailors for their first deployment and making sure Sailors are up to date with their training.

"Seeing that there are not many P-3s around and this being the last P-3 deployment for the East Coast," said VP-26 Command Master Chief James B. Daniels.

"Getting parts has been a big issue. Also, since most of our preparations have been during the holidays, we needed to work hard to make sure our Sailors were trained on what is expected of them and they were ready for deployment, but the squadron has met its challenges and now is ready to go."

The support from family and friends is an integral part of the success of the Sailors.

"My family is so supportive and so much a part of my life," said Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class David Heder. "Having to leave them is the hardest part of deployments."

Heder's wife and two children were there to show their support. Heder said that he was a little nervous and sad to leave his family.

"I'm looking forward to this as much as I can," said Heder. "I miss my family when I'm away, but I have a job to do and I enjoy it because I learn something new every day, and I'm challenged every day."

Heder said this is his second history-making deployment since he has been in the Navy.

"I actually helped introduce the P-8 while I served at VP-30," said Heder. "It's cool to be able to say that I was a part of the P-8 coming in and now a part of the P-3 going out in Jacksonville."

Retired Chief William W. Stewart, from the aviation structural mechanic community and a Jacksonville resident, was present to witness this historic day. Stewart served 30 years in the Navy and was factory-trained on the P-3 in 1962.

"I was assigned to VP-9 as an airframes chief after training with Lockheed on the P-3s and went on their first deployment with the aircraft in November 1964," said Stewart. "It's kind of sad to see the P-3 go, but it's an evolution. It's a new age; we have cell phones, wide-screen TVs and now the P-8s."

VP-26 became the Navy's first operational P-3B squadron in January 1966, when the squadron received the first production of the P-3B while stationed at Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Maine.

"I am so proud of all the Sailors who have worked so hard to keep these aircraft flying for so many years," said Cmdr. Gregory Smith, VP-26 commanding officer.

BORDER PROTECTION LENDS A HAND FOR SUPER BOWL SECURITY

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Jan 26, 2015, 8:46 PM ET
By ASTRID GALVAN Associated Press

Black Hawk helicopters and truck-sized X-ray machines that are typically deployed along the U.S.-Mexico border have been brought to the Super Bowl venue to assist with the security effort.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection showed off the technology Monday as it helps with Super Bowl security.

Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske was on hand for a demonstration of the agency's Black Hawks and large mobile X-ray machines that are used to detect contraband and explosives. The helicopters and X-ray machines are from Tucson and Nogales, some of the busiest spots in the nation for the smuggling of drugs and immigrants.

Kerlikowske said Arizona's border with Mexico still has adequate security while some equipment is used in Glendale for the Super Bowl.

He said it's not just the technology that will help keep the big game safe, but the expertise behind it.

"The real key about this equipment is the people who operate them," Kerlikowske said.

The CBP is also deploying about 100 officers who will assist other federal and local law enforcement agencies.

The X-ray machines are mobile and the size of a large truck.

They slowly pan outside a semi-truck while operators inside the X-ray machine look for anomalies. The X-ray machines are in heavy use at the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales, one of the busiest ports of entry for commerce in the country.

Within a few minutes, the X-ray machines will have scanned an entire semi-trailer, looking for contraband and explosives.

The CBP also will use its Tucson-based helicopters and Black Hawks to monitor the air during the game, when other aircrafts are not allowed to fly nearby. The Black Hawks are used by the CBP and the Border Patrol for a variety of missions, including for rescuing border crossers who become sick or injured. They've also recently been commonly used to arrest so-called scouts, or men who act as lookouts in the desert for drug and human smuggling organizations.

HAWAII CHIEFS AND FIRST CLASS SAILORS PARTICIPATE IN TEAMBUILDING HIKE

PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- In the early morning hours of Jan. 27, on Oahu's Makapu'u Point, more than 300 chief petty officers and first class petty officers stationed across Hawaii gathered for a hike.

The two-mile journey provided the opportunity to develop camaraderie through exercise and is a part of CPO 365, a year-round training initiative that fosters team building and community service and demonstrates the expectations and accountability that come with donning the anchors of a chief petty officer.

"Events like today are especially important to do as a region," said Master Chief Machinist's Mate Jay Cherland, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet command master chief. "They give first class petty officers an opportunity to see what we do as a chiefs mess especially with communication. It's an occasion to network, to get out of your peer group and widen your pool of knowledge."

With eight commands represented, many of the Sailors carpooled or rideshared to further enhance the fellowship.

"The chief's mess came up with this idea and they are always engaging and supportive," said Yeoman 1st Class Gregory Joseph. "Even though we don't see each other on a daily basis, we can get together at an event like this and network, talk to different people and get new ideas. Plus, it's just fun."

Operations Specialist 1st Class Kathryn Richardson also enjoyed the time spent with fellow first class petty officers.

"This was a good opportunity to get together with fellow first classes in the CPO 365 program and experience this hike together," said Richardson. "The team-building events and being able to hear everyone's points of view are the most valuable parts of the course."

Once all the hikers reached the top of the point, the group took a team photo and paused to learn about local Navy heritage.

"Incorporating naval heritage with a hike helps bring to life what our predecessors would have seen on an average day at Makapu'u," said Chief Information Systems Technician Richard Rivera. "CPO 365 is building upon the ties between first class and chief petty officers that have been in place since back when the first chiefs were promoted. This program provides a common ground for all first class petty officers and re-invigorates the chief's mess. If you attend a CPO 365 training event, you will certainly learn something."

BUSAN, Republic of Korea (NNS) -- Sailors from the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Mustin (DDG 89) and USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) strengthened partnerships with the Republic of Korea navy during a port visit to Busan, Jan 29 - Feb 2.

During the port visit, crew members plan to conduct warfighting skills engagements and exchanges with their ROK Navy counterparts and visit local sites in the Busan community.

"This opportunity for bilateral engagement allows us to foster existing friendships while emphasizing shared tactics and technology between the U.S. and ROK navies," said Lt. Richard Ray, operations officer aboard USS John S. McCain.

The ships just concluded a series of bilateral training exercises with the ROK navy in international waters east and west of the Korean peninsula. The routine exercises focused on reinforcing teamwork and interoperability between the U.S. and ROK navies while giving Sailors the opportunity to sharpen their tactical skills. The exercises covered a full spectrum of scenarios including antisubmarine warfare training, communication drills, ship maneuvers, and naval liaison officer exchanges.

While in Busan, Sailors from both ships will also have the opportunity to conduct community relations engagements in the local Busan community. Fostering enduring relationships through community relations with local citizens, teambuilding activities with the ROK Navy, and regular bilateral training is part of the U.S. Navy's contribution to sustaining a strong alliance between the U.S. and the ROK.

"Through bi-lateral training, we can improve our proficiency and integration with U.S. Navy ships," said Cmdr. Lee, Jong-Sik, of the Republic of Korea Fleet Headquarters in Busan. "However, it is through port visits like in Busan, that we can truly share our Korean culture and heritage as Sailors with our U.S. Navy counterparts."

Mustin and John S. McCain are forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan as part of the U.S. 7th Fleet, which maintains an enduring presence in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. As multi-mission platforms, the ships can carry out independent operations or operate in conjunction with a carrier strike group or other partner navies to conduct maritime security and stability operations across the region.

WHEN NEGOTIATING FOR HOSTAGES, WHITE HOUSE SAYS TALIBAN IS NOT A TERRORIST GROUP

White House Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz said Wednesday that when it comes to negotiating for American hostages, the Obama administration does not consider the Taliban a terrorist organization.

"The Taliban is an armed insurgency," Schultz said in response to a question from ABC's Jonathan Karl asking him to distinguish between Jordanian efforts to pay a ransom for hostages and President Obama's deal with the Taliban for United States Army soldier Bowe Bergdahl. "ISIL is a terrorist group. So we don't make concessions to terrorist groups."

"You don't consider the Taliban a terrorist group?" Karl then pressed.

"I don't think that the Taliban um... uh... The Taliban is an armed insurgency. This was a winding down of the war in Afghanistan and that's why this arrangement was dealt. Our view is, the president said at the time, which is as commander in chief when he sends men and women into armed combat he doesn't want to leave anyone behind. That was the commitment he was following through on this."

In June of 2014, Obama violated federal law by giving the Taliban five of their commanders held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in exchange for Bergdahl who the Army is about to charge with desertion. Conservatives believe Obama's decision to release the Taliban commanders had nothing to do with leaving soldiers behind and everything to do with Obama's efforts to empty Guantanamo Bay without congressional authorization.

While the State Department does not include Afghanistan's Taliban on the State Department's Foreign Terrorist Organization list, Pakistan's Taliban is on that list. Additionally, a 2002 executive order did designate the Afghanistan Taliban as Specially Designated Global Terrorists, a designation that the Obama administration has not changed to this day and can be used to trigger asset freezes by the United States.

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces (USFF) and Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) will conduct Exercise Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield 2015 (SC-CS15) Feb. 2-13 on Navy installations located in the continental United States.

This annual anti-terrorism force protection (ATFP) exercise is designed to train Navy Security Forces to respond to threats to installations and units.

"This is the largest force protection exercise conducted across the Department of Defense and the value of training events like this cannot be underestimated. This exercise enhances the training and readiness of our security personnel and first responders. Additionally, it creates an integrated learning environment for installation and afloat personnel to exercise functional plans and operational capabilities," said William Clark, CNIC's exercise program manager.

Exercise SC-CS15 is not in response to any specific threat, but is a regularly scheduled exercise. The exercise will consist of roughly 130 simultaneous field training exercise attacks across the country, each designed to test different regional ATFP operations.

"Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield 2015 provides an opportunity to assess the Navy's ability to respond to and recover from a broad spectrum of antiterrorism threats," said Capt. Greg Sandway, USFF ATFP exercise director. "One of the key components of the exercise is to improve our ability to protect our Navy equities, but this exercise also enables us to integrate with the emergency responders from the various local communities and establish coordinated response and recovery procedures that are mutually beneficial."

Measures have been taken to minimize disruptions to normal base operations, but there may be times when the exercise causes increased traffic around bases or delays in base access. Residents near bases may also see increased security activity associated with the exercise. Base personnel should register for the AtHoc wide area alert network if they have not already done so as this will keep them updated of force protection conditions and other emergency, environmental, or exercise-related impacts on the area.

Stay up to date with events happening in your area. Visit CNIC at https://www.facebook.com/NavyInstallations and USFF at https://www.facebook.com/usfleetforces.

NAVAL EXERCISE TO FEATURE 'REALISTIC SCENARIOS'

Special to The Star

Naval Air Station Meridian will participate in two training exercises next month.

According to a U.S. Navy press release, Exercise Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield 2015 (SC-CS15) will be conducted on naval installations throughout the continental U.S.. The two exercises, each with a distinct focus, occur simultaneously and will stress different areas of Navy force protection and anti-terrorism programs to enhance the training readiness of security personnel to respond to real-world threats.

"The purpose of the exercise is to ensure that our team is ready to respond to any threat at all times," NAS Meridian Commanding Officer Capt. Scott Bunny wrote in a press release. "It is our responsibility to provide for the safety and security of all personnel on board the installation, while also protecting our equipment and other physical assets to effectively execute our mission of enabling and sustaining warfighter readiness from the shore."

This annual Fleet Forces and Navy Installations Command exercise is designed to enhance the training and readiness of Naval Security Forces and is not in response to any specific threat, but is a regularly scheduled exercise.

In addition to other exercise requirements during this period, NAS Meridian will conduct a drill on Feb. 2.

"The exercise uses realistic scenarios to train our security forces and maintain a high level of readiness so that we can best respond to changing and dynamic threats," said Bunnay. "Measures have been taken to minimize disruptions to normal base operations, but there may be times when the exercise causes increased traffic or delays in base access. Area residents may also see increased security activity associated with the exercise. This may be especially true during the drill on Feb. 2, so please don't become alarmed. It is all part of the drill."

It is Navy policy never to discuss the specifics of force protection measures, including exercises, so details of this exercise will not be released in order to safeguard our military and their families, employees, visitors, and equipment.
