USS CHOSIN DEPARTS FOR SAN DIEGO AFTER 25 YEARS IN HAWAII

By
U.S. Navy

– March 24, 2016Posted in: Inside the Navy, Surface

The U.S. Navy announced March 22 that USS Chosin (CG 65) will change its homeport from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to San Diego to begin the cruiser modernization program in San Diego. The move supports the Navy’s plan to modernize select cruisers to extend their service lives to 40 years, as well as upgrade shipboard combat systems to address current and future warfighting requirements. In this blog, Rear Adm. John Fuller, commander, Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, reflects on Chosin’s service after 25 years in Hawaii.

By Rear Adm. John Fuller
Commander, Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific

When we say “aloha” and “a hui hou” (farewell) to USS Chosin on Friday as the War Dragon leaves Pearl Harbor, we will remember her long and distinguished record of achievement and service.

PEARL HARBOR (Nov. 22, 2013) The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Chosin (CG 65) arrives at homeport at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam following a deployment to the western Pacific region. The ship and its crew of nearly 340 Sailors conducted integrated operations with allies and partners during the ship’s six-month deployment including the International Fleet Review held in Sydney, Australia. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Diana Quinlan/Released)

USS Chosin’s first and only homeport – for the past 25 years – has been here at Pearl Harbor.

Thousands of men and women served aboard USS Chosin over the past quarter century. Chosin Sailors and their proud ship kept the sea lanes open, built strong international partnerships and faithfully stood watch, ready to defend our nation.

Like other ships on our waterfront, Chosin worked with our friends and allies. For example, in 2013, while forward-deployed to the western Pacific, Chosin’s crew participated in Aegis scenario interoperability training with the Republic of Korea Navy.

(U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Johans Chavarro/Released)

Chosin gained a reputation over the years for being in the right place to render aid to stranded international mariners, from rescuing Yemeni and Iraqi fishermen in the Arabian Gulf to recovering the Canadian navy ship HMCS Protecteur in the Pacific in 2014 after it experienced a fire.

Over the years, in addition to deploying forward, Chosin participated in numerous Rim of the Pacific and Koa Kai exercises near Pearl Harbor.

Named for the “Chosin Few” Marines of the Korean War at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, USS Chosin has been a bridge from the past to the present and to the future.

I commend the commanding officer, Capt. Kevin Brand, and Chosin’s men and women for embracing and exemplifying the warrior ethos – they trained and were ready to fight, and thus demonstrated how presence with power preserves peace.

In the weeks leading up to this day, crew and family members demonstrated friendship, camaraderie and community service through a Chosin ohana cruise, a picnic at Foster Point last week and a bike path cleanup March 4 coordinated by chiefs and petty officers with the Hawaii Bicycling League.

I’m impressed by something CTR1 Allen Gray said about the Pearl Harbor Historic Trail cleanup: “I personally feel that it is a big deal for cyclists to have a safe and clean area to ride. This gives the U.S. Navy and the USS Chosin an opportunity to give back to the community in a tangible way.”

For 25 years Sailors aboard USS Chosin, through their achievements and service, gave back to the people of Hawaii and our nation – in a tangible way.

We wish USS Chosin fair winds and following seas as the War Dragon heads to its new homeport of San Diego for cruiser modernization – taking warfighting readiness to the next level. It’s the end of an era, but what it really means is CG-65 will begin a new and bold chapter.

Thank you, USS Chosin. Invictus! Congratulations, shipmates, on a job well done.

China hopes that North Korea authorities will decide to fully abide by existing UN Security Council resolutions.

BEIJING (Sputnik) — Beijing hopes that Pyongyang will comply with existing UN Security Council resolutions, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Monday, commenting on recent reports that North Korea had launched several short-range missiles into the Sea of Japan.

"We hope that the DPRK will avoid actions that violate UN Security Council resolutions," Hua told reporters, urging all sides to show restraint in the current situation.

China Calls on N Korea to Adhere to UNSC Resolutions Over Missile Launches

Pyongyang’s January hydrogen bomb test, as well as the February launch of a long-range rocket to place a satellite into orbit, in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions, led to the introduction of more sanctions against North Korea by the UNSC.

Last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un instructed the country’s military to prepare for conducting new nuclear and missile tests to protect the country against the alleged threat from the United States, despite the UNSC sanctions.

GREAT GREEN FLEET PARTICIPATES IN FOAL EAGLE

Story Number: NNS160325-03Release Date: 3/25/2016 9:27:00 AM

By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Dakota Rayburn, USS John C. Stennis Public Affairs

160324-N-XX566-411 WATERS SURROUNDING THE KOREAN PENINSULA (March 24, 2016) - Ships assigned to the John C. Stennis Strike Group and ships assigned to the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy 1st Fleet Maritime Battle Group One steam together during Maritime Counter Special Operations Force (MCSOF) exercise, which is part of Foal Eagle 2016. Foal Eagle is an annual bilateral training exercise designed to enhance the readiness of U.S. and ROK forces and their ability to work together during a crisis. Providing a ready force supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific, USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) is operating as part of the Great Green Fleet on a regularly scheduled 7th Fleet deployment. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Andre T. Richard/ Released)

WATERS SURROUNDING THE KOREAN PENINSULA (NNS) -- John C. Stennis Strike Group, the centerpiece of the U.S. Navy's Great Green Fleet, joined the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army and the Republic of Korea air force and navy to participate in Maritime Counter Special Operations Force exercise, which is part of the annual Foal Eagle exercise that wrapped up March 24 on the Korean peninsula and surrounding waters.

USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 launched 36 sorties to support MCSOF missions, with USS William P. Lawrence (DDG 110) and USS Stockdale(DDG 106), part of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 21, executing maritime air control missions to defend the Korean coastline.

MCSOF focuses on joint and combined defense-in-depth military execution using units over sea, air and land. The goal is to increase the interoperability of U.S. and ROK forces in the Korean Theater of Operations.

Chicago native Lt. Cmdr. Jennifer Huck, Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron's 71 operations officer said that the MCSOF mission was designed to help defend the Republic of Korea. "For our event specifically, we had U.S. and South Korean aircraft participating, and each aircraft had a specific role."

Ships from Destroyer Squadron 15, based in Yokosuka, Japan, provided forces to augment JCSSG throughout the exercise, further enhancing U.S. and ROK combined tactics and sea control.

As JCSSG executed the MCSOF mission, it also focused on energy conservation and demonstrating the capabilities of the GGF. The purpose of the GGF is to highlight a culture of energy efficiency and flexibility. JCSSG has different operational requirements depending on the mission at hand and completes those missions using as much smart energy use as possible. By using energy efficient systems while conducting operations, JCSSG increases its combat capability, flexibility, deployment range and duration.

FE16 was a series of joint and combined field training exercises conducted by U.S. and ROK Combined Forces Command and United States Forces Korea component commands (ground, air, naval, and special operations). Approximately 10,600 U.S. service members and ROK forces from all services participated.

Six of those ROK service members embarked aboard John C. Stennis to provide cross training and reinforce better understanding between the two navies. The ROK sailors were given tours of the ship and briefed on routine operations of the embarked air wing.

"The relationship between the U.S. and Korea can become better and stronger than before through this priceless experience," said Lt. Woo, Byung Sung.

The ROK sailors were impressed with the sheer size of John C. Stennis, the amount of personnel on board and most of all, flight operations. They enjoyed their brief of flight operations with John C. Stennis Commanding Officer, Capt. Gregory Huffman, on the bridge.

"I will tell my commanding officer this was a very exciting experience, and I am very appreciative," said Lt. Lee, Hyun Ho.

Providing a combat-ready force to protect collective maritime interests, JCSSG is operating on a regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment.

ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- Guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87), assigned to Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, participated in a multi-ship Naval Undersea Warfare Training Assessment Course during the Composite Training Unit Exercise, in preparation for an upcoming overseas deployment.

NUWTAC assesses IKE CSG's ability to perform anti-submarine warfare as a strike group.

During the exercise, Mason deployed a 610-foot, multi-functional towed array listening device attached to a 5,600-foot cable in order to find and track submarines.

"This [undersea warfare] battlegroup certification is important," said Sonar Technician 1st Class Christof Bessler. "It proves we can do ASW as a team and not just as individual ships."

Undersea threats are one component of COMPTUEX, which also tests Mason and the CSG's abilities to evaluate and respond to surface, air and cyber threats.

"This is our final ASW practice operating with the rest of our strike group in preparation for our deployment," said Sonar Technician 1st Class Andrew Hamann, petty officer in charge of MFTA.

Hamann explained his job is not just about "ensuring the proper deployment of MFTA." It also involves "maintaining the safety of personnel and gear, and communicating with the bridge for safe navigation."

Chief Sonar Technician Justin Northup praised his team's "outstanding execution of ASW procedures and tactics."

Fighting submarines while escorting convoys through the Atlantic during World War II made the second USS Mason (DE 529) famous. It has the distinction of being the first U.S. Navy warship manned with a predominantly African-American enlisted crew. This was the first time African-American Sailors were permitted to train and serve in ratings other than cook and steward.

Along with Mason, which is led by Cmdr. Christopher J. Gilbertson, IKE CSG includes aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and USS Monterey (CG 61), and Destroyer Squadron 26 with its associated ships USS Stout (DDG 55), USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) and USS Nitze (DDG 94).

MOGHERINI, REPRESENTANTE DE L’UE: « CES TERRORISTES SONT DES EUROPEENS. NOUS AVONS BESOIN DE L'ISLAM. »

ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- Guided-missile destroyer USS Nitze (DDG 94) and embarked Helicopter Squadron (HSM) 74 crew departed Naval Station Norfolk to begin Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), March 12.

Nitze joined the rest of the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group to conduct COMPTUEX, which tests the CSG's ability to work as a cohesive unit in training scenarios in preparation for their upcoming deployment.

"Nitze and her crew are glad to be back into the fight," said Cmdr. Paul J. Kaylor, commanding officer. "We are excited to be joining up with such a professional team of war fighters to hone our tactical skills and prepare for the deployment that lies ahead. The Eisenhower Strike Group represents the best of what our Navy is about and we couldn't be prouder to be a part of it."

During COMPTUEX, Nitze will face multiple training scenarios constructed to mimic potential real-world scenarios they may encounter on when forward deployed.

COMPTUEX is the final major training evolution of the integrated phase of training for the IKE CSG, which is scheduled to deploy this summer.

Along with Nitze, the IKE CSG is comprised of CSG-10 staff, the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 4, Destroyer Squadron 26 staff and associated ships: guided-missile destroyers USS Mason (DDG 87), USS Stout (DDG 55) and USS Roosevelt (DDG 80), as well as guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and USS Monterey (CG 61).

USS AMERICA PERFORMS MASS CASUALTY DRILL

Story Number: NNS160328-25Release Date: 3/28/2016 3:13:00 PM

By Mass Commmunication Specialist 2nd Class Jonathan Colon, USS America Public Affairs

USS AMERICA - At Sea (NNS) -- USS America (LHA 6) completed a series of mass casualty drills during its first underway in 10 months after completing a post-shakedown availability, March 22.

The drills were designed to prepare the medical training team and ship's crew for an upcoming inspection referred to as Fleet Service Operation Medical 1.4 with Afloat Training Group, San Diego.

The shipboard inspection will assess the MTT, their level of knowledge in emergency response and the crew's knowledge of basic first aid.

Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Brian Butorac, Medical department's leading chief petty officer, explained the significance of having the crew prepared for any casualty.

"The overall importance is making sure we are ready to go to sea," said Butorac. "Doing these drills on a day-to-day basis ensures that, at any time, if there is an accident or emergency involving an injured crew member, another crew member is ready to respond to help the fallen casualty, or possibly save a life."

Each day, the training team executes a different casualty, whether it's a compound fracture, sucking chest wound, a facial wound or electrical shock. One day during the underway, the crew and MTT held seven drills sporadically throughout the ship. Their goal was to test the crew's proficiency in responding at any given moment.

Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class Fabiola Cesar, a member of the MTT, explained the importance of holding each individual drill.

"Our drills and the knowledge we provide goes toward aiding crew readiness," said Cesar. "We have to prepare for the mission. You have to train like you fight, and you fight like you train. Once you drill, you gain the knowledge and the experience, and it becomes second nature."

The last drill was a mass casualty held in the ship's forecastle. With all of the unpredictability of a mass casualty, preparation is vital to assisting injured personnel.

Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Jaime Cardenas, the program coordinator for casualty drills, described the crew's progress in the treatment of each casualty situation.

"I can tell from the beginning that we needed some work," said Cardenas. "We were just unorganized, and as we did these drills over and over, I've seen us improve and our confidence build with every drill. I enjoy seeing the progress from where we started, and I feel confident that if we have a real casualty that we will be able to respond to it and respond well."

"I love training and this is why I joined MTT," said Cesar. "I think it's awesome for the crew, and the drills we do will only help us down the road in case of any emergency."

USS MONTEREY JUNIOR OFFICER RISES TO COMPTUEX CHALLENGE

ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- For one junior officer assigned to guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61), a Composite Training Unit Exercise is the most strenuous training exercise he has experienced in his Navy career.

"COMPTUEX gives you the opportunity to see things that you're not going to see often," said Ensign Joshua Asaro, Monterey's first lieutenant. "Coming out of COMPTUEX and having this high concentration and focus on training and development really accelerates your progress as a bridge watchstander."

The Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group's COMPTUEX, which began March 16, is testing the strike group's ability to effectively perform and respond as an integrated team while deployed together.

Asaro said the exercise is preparing him to be a better officer of the deck, the commanding officer's direct representative and decision-maker in the pilot house. Currently serving on the bridge as a junior officer of the deck, he is one step away from earning his OOD letter, the last major qualification before earning a surface warfare officer designation.

As JOOD, Asaro advises the conning officer, who is responsible for giving orders to drive the ship. The JOOD also directly assists the OOD in all of his or her duties on the bridge.

During COMPTUEX, the ship will conduct many fast-paced, high-speed maneuvers to dodge submarine-launched torpedoes and to evade fast in-shore attack craft. It is this experience that Asaro said separates him from other junior officers not partaking in a COMPTUEX.

"If you were just on the beach, or if your ship was not participating, you would not get this experience," Asaro said. "The formations, dealing with FIAC, and seeing how the strike group integrates-there is no better preparation for that in the real world. COMPTUEX is a great opportunity for that training."

Ike CSG is comprised of the Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 10 staff, Destroyer Squadron 26 staff, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- Amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) pulled alongside the fleet replenishment oiler USNS Guadalupe (T-AO-200), March 24, and conducted underway replenishment (UNREP) at sea for the first time in more than 10 months, after completing a post-shakedown availability.

UNREP demonstrates the ship's ability to sustain itself at sea and allows ships to continue its mission without the need to pull into port.

Guadalupe transferred fuel to America during the complex evolution that involved America's air, deck and engineering departments working together to keep both ships perfectly aligned, receive the fuel, and have it properly tested and stored.

"This was my first time serving as conning officer," said Ensign Jackson Fisher, deck department's 1st division officer. "It was an awesome experience and I'm glad the evolution went [safely]. Everyone involved did an excellent job."

America's deck department prepared for several months to ensure the UNREP would be successful. Knowing they had to train their Sailors well in advance, they sent their most inexperienced personnel to ships on the San Diego waterfront to get hands-on training at sea. Additionally, the department simulated the evolution aboard America to ensure success.

"We trained up until the first day of the underway," said Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Christopher Vincent, assigned to deck department's 2nd Division. "At one time, I was in their shoes, and to see the look in their eyes is always fun for me. This is what we train for and that's why I love teaching the new guys."

At the conclusion of the UNREP, Capt. Michael. W. Baze, America's commanding officer spoke over the 1MC, the ships announcement system, to congratulate the crew for a job well done.

"I wanted to pause at the end of the successful UNREP, which, by the way, was marvelous," said Baze.

Theme: 9/11 & 'War on Terrorism', Police State & Civil Rights

It’s real simple. Create a threat, predicate expanding autocracy at home and endless wars of hegemony abroad upon confronting that threat, and all the while intentionally perpetuate fear, hysteria, hatred, and division to keep that threat relevant in the hearts and minds of as many people as possible.

Described above is an elementary tactic used by special interests throughout human history, and today’s special interests being no exception. Today, the contrived threat of choice is “terrorism.” It is a well-documented fact that organizations like Al Qaeda and the so-called “Islamic State” (ISIS), are creations and geopolitical tools of the United States, its European allies, and its Middle Eastern subordinates, including Turkey and the Persian Gulf states.

The means of keeping this contrived threat fresh in the minds of the public is Islamophobia – the scapegoating of some 1.6 billion Muslims around the world for the deeds of US-Saudi indoctrinated, armed, funded, and backed extremists.

Image: Groups like the UK EDL, PEGIDA, and others are created and run directly by special interests – ironically the same special interests organizing, funding, and directing the very extremists Islamophobes are scapegoating all of Islam for. Many EDL/PEGIDA members are concurrently violent football hooligans and/or Neo-Nazis, thus, a lack of informed discernment should be no surprise.

The role the United States and Saudi Arabia played in the inception of Al Qaeda during the 1980′s to wage proxy war on the Soviet Union in Afghanistan is documented history. What is less widely known, is the role these same two nations played in the creation of ISIS -which admittedly branched off from Al Qaeda.

However, America’s own Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) admitted in a leaked 2012 memo that indeed, just as Al Qaeda was created to wage proxy war in Afghanistan, a “Salafist” (Islamic) “principality” (State) was intentionally created in eastern Syria to wage proxy war against Damascus.

The leaked 2012 report (.pdf) stated explicitly that:
Citation:

If the situation unravels there is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist principality in eastern Syria (Hasaka and Der Zor), and this is exactly what the supporting powers to the opposition want, in order to isolate the Syrian regime, which is considered the strategic depth of the Shia expansion (Iraq and Iran).

To clarify just who these “supporting powers” were that sought the creation of a “Salafist” (Islamic) principality” (State), the DIA report explains:
Citation:

The West, Gulf countries, and Turkey support the opposition; while Russia, China, and Iran support the regime.

It is clear then, that if the US and its allies are behind ISIS, then attacks attributed to ISIS are either directly or indirectly related to US foreign policy. It is very clear that ISIS serves Western objectives in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) by waging war against precisely those governments the US itself has slated for “regime change.” ISIS also serves as a convenient pretext for direct military intervention abroad when possible.

What may be less clear to some, is what the US and its allies have to gain when ISIS launches attacks in France, Belgium, and other targets across both East and West.

However, it is indeed clear – clear that they serve to bolster the contrived threat of “global terrorism” and both the growing autocracy at home and expanding wars abroad,

Islamophobia Industry Run by Familiar Faces

Wouldn’t it be curious if those most vocal in promoting fear, hysteria, hatred, and division against Muslims to perpetuate the contrived threat of “global terrorism” represented the same special interests both involved directly in arming, funding, training, and exploiting the violence of terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and ISIS, as well as the same special interests profiting the most from the perpetual “War on Terror?”

It would be curious – and it also happens to be the verified truth.

A growing ecosystem of Islamophobia networks is centered around a cadre of Neo-Conservatives who led the United States into the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, as well as advocated for wars against Iran, Libya, Syria, Sudan, and many more in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in Washington, New York, and Pennsylvania.

One of the highest level former US government representatives publicly involved, John Bolton, was a vocal advocate for global war including in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, and Iran, and  has for years served as the gravitational center of at least America’s Islamophobia subsidiary. Around him orbits media personality, racist, bigot Pam Geller, Robert Spencer, and Project for a New American Century (PNAC) signatory, Daniel Pipes.

Image: Not only is America’s Islamophobia subsidiary linked directly to US government representatives directly involved in both the arming, funding, and exploitation of terrorist groups and the various wars fought upon the pretext of “fighting terrorism,” but this subsidiary interlocks with those across Europe including the UK’s “English Defense League” and PEGIDA. The special interests characters like Bolton, pictured posing with Geller top, right, represent, have made literally trillions off of the wars predicated on the fear, hatred, and hysteria perpetuated by Islamophobia.

Further in the peripheries, are faux-alternative media cognitive infiltrators like WorldNetDaily run by Joseph Farah, a card-carrying member of the Neo-Conservative war lobby and an associate with many advocates who have played a direct role in the subversion and destruction of Syria. Farah himself is Syrian-Lebanese, and involved heavily in organizations created by the US aimed at the overthrow and reordering of the Levant.

WND, Pam Geller, Robert Spencer, and many others who lead the American Islamophobia subsidiary, in tandem with their European counterparts, have invested years in fanning the flames of misunderstanding, hatred, fear, and hysteria among Western populations. They do this to both divert from the fact that the very interests they represent are the source of global terrorism carried out by Al Qaeda and ISIS – creations not of Islam, but of US foreign policy, and to create sufficient rhetorical justification for continued American intervention overseas across MENA and beyond.

The West has scarcely managed to justify its many and still multiplying wars abroad, and global consensus regarding America’s role in the creation and perpetuation of Al Qaeda and ISIS is reaching critical mass. It is not difficult to see that without the significant Islamophobia being spread through at least segments of the world’s population, just how much more tenuous US foreign policy would be.

Those in the Alternative Media Selling Out

It has been a stated matter of US policy, best articulated in former-US Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs Cass Sunstein’s “Conspiracy Theories” paper, to infiltrate and redirect the alternative media, who even years ago, had already begun to significantly undermine US spheres of influence within global information space.

Called “cognitive infiltration,” the idea was to infiltrate the alternative media with messages not directly contradicting the truth, but contradicting it enough to slowly bring readers, viewers, and listeners back into government controlled narratives. That is precisely what WND and those that have since found themselves in close cooperation with them and paid lobbyists like Pam Geller and Robert Spencer have done.
Citation:

Co-opted alternative media organizations that had for years warned the public of the dangers of false flag terrorism, US government involvement behind both Al Qaeda and more recently ISIS, and who had warned of Western attempts to scapegoat religions, races, and political systems to divide and control people, are now directly complicit in doing all of the above.

Now, throngs of weaker-minded readers who had drifted toward alternative media, have been successfully brought back through the vector of Islamophobia – employing many of the most elementary ploys used throughout the history of propaganda to manipulate and control public perception. With establishment media platforms and alleged alternative media personalities peddling precisely the same narrative so closely, these supposed alternative media platforms no longer are “alternative.”

What is left is for genuine alternative media to recognize this split and continue focusing on telling the truth overall – and in particular – the interests and agendas being served by the Islamophobia industry.

Image: It is a hard sell for US policymakers to justify the price in public treasure and blood paid to maintain global hegemony like that depicted on the map above. It would be infinitely harder without the contrived threat of “terrorism,” and to ensure the longevity of the “terror” narrative, much has been invested in the Islamophobia industry.

The goal should not be to fall into perpetual infighting with these co-opted individuals and organizations. The goal should be to treat these sell-outs precisely as the rest of the corporate-controlled media is treated – a voice to be exposed by simply documenting and reporting the truth.

Lying about Groups of People to Start Wars = Oldest Trick in the Book: Why are Some Still Falling for It?

While in hindsight, considering the lies that have been told to sell wars to the Western people, and the documented wealth, power, and influence these wars have brought special interests at the cost of the rest of humanity, it should seem obvious to people that those peddling Islamophobia have vested monetary and political interests in doing so, and that the truth certainly lies well beyond their simplistic generalizations, slurs, and vitriol.

But because indulging  in racism and bigotry is a path of lesser resistance than informed inquiry, research, and self-guided learning, the establishment has found a means of diminishing the impact of alternative media. It will be up to genuine alternative media to find a way of restoring and even expanding upon its previous impact.

Lying about groups of people to justify perpetual war profiteering is one of the oldest tricks in the book. If the alternative media is unable to confront and confound such elementary tricks, something is systemically weak within the alternative media itself. If the alternative media is content with reporting whatever will bring in readers and revenue, they are no longer the alternative media – they are bad copies of establishment propagandists. If the alternative media is serious about the truth and a future for themselves, their friends, family, and communities, this Islamophobia – and all ploys like it – must be confronted and crushed alongside all the other lies told by special interests.

N. KOREAN MILITIA UNITS FIGHTING IN SYRIA – OPPOSITION DELAGATE

Presence of militia units latest in many suspicions of North Korean support for Al-Assad
John G. Grisafi

March 24th, 2016

Two North Korean militia units are fighting in Syria in support of Bashar Al-Assad’s government in that country’s civil war, Russian news agency TASS reported Tuesday.

Asaad Al-Zoubi, head delegate of the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) of the Syrian opposition, reported the presence of North Korean militia units in Syria while attending peace talks at the United Nations European headquarters in Geneva.

According to Al-Zoubi, the two units are known as “Cholma-1” and “Cholma-7” (written as Chalma by some sources). The name Cholma means “iron horse” in Korean.

The opposition forces fighting the Al-Assad regime consider the presence of foreign troops supporting Al-Assad to be a serious threat.

“North Korean troops are fatally dangerous,” Al-Zoubi explained.

The report has not been yet verified by any other source. The years of continual warfare in Syria have made it increasingly difficult to accurately confirm or refute such presences and activity within the country.

If true, such operations could constitute a violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1874 – adopted in 2009 – and UNSC Resolution 2270 – adopted earlier this month. Paragraph 9 of Resolution 2270 prohibits “the procurement from the DPRK of technical training, advice, services or assistance related to the provision, manufacture, maintenance or use of arms and related materiel.”

This is not the first time North Korea has been accused of assisting Al-Assad’s regime in the Syrian civil war, which was been waged since spring of 2011. In August 2013, a Libyan vessel was intercepted en-route to Syria carrying North Korean gas masks and small arms. In October 2013, former president of the Syrian Opposition Council Burhan Ghalioun said North Korean pilots were flying in the Syrian Air Force. In January 2014, Jane’s Defence Weekly reported North Korea was assisting Syrian in improving missile capabilities.

Although North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has publicly expressed his full support for Al-Assad, Pyongyang has denied any involvement in the Syrian civil war.

North Korea and Syria have a history of cooperation and friendship dating back to 1966, when the two countries first established diplomatic relations. North Korea and Syria have cooperated on the development of chemical weapons and North Korea has provided support in the form of arms and military advisors both to Syria itself and through Syria to non-state groups in the Middle East.

Pyongyang also helped Syria covertly build a nuclear reactor, based on the one at Yongbyon, in Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria during the mid-2000s. The Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, and other foreign intelligence services discovered the reactor and North Korea’s involvement and, in 2007, the Israeli Air Force destroyed the reactor in a precision air strike called Operation Orchard.

In recent years, amidst the ongoing civil war in Syria and North Korea’s continual pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile development, ties between the two countries have shown signs of strengthening, with numerous delegations and agreements between the two.

Between 22 and 35 jihadist training compounds have been identified in the U.S. Islamberg, its headquarters, is in Hancock, New York. Known as The Muslims of the Americas (MOA) or Soldiers of Allah, an American offshoot of the terrorist group Jamaat ul-Fuqra  in Pakistan, they are run by its founder, the Pakistani Cleric Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani Hashemi.

In the 1999 “Patterns of Global Terrorism Report,” the U.S. State Department listed Jammeat al-Fuqura as a terrorist group, but it has since been removed by the Clinton State Department under President Obama.

Mercredi, 30 mars 2016 06:30 MISE à JOUR Mercredi, 30 mars 2016 06:30

CHINA’S MILITARY WANTS TO PUT ITS NUKES ON A HAIR TRIGGER

12:50 PM ET By Gregory Kulacki

If Barack Obama gets one thing done at the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit, it should be dissuading Xi Jinping from doing this.

Even as Chinese President Xi Jinping strides into the final Nuclear Security Summit today in Washington, D.C., he is considering a dangerous policy change: The Chinese military is asking to put its nuclear missiles on hair-trigger alert so they can be launched immediately upon detecting an incoming attack. President Barack Obama should encourage his counterpart to carefully consider such a change, because it would dramatically increase the risk of an accidental or mistaken nuclear launch against the United States or its allies.

Gregory Kulacki is China Project Manager for the Union of Concerned Scientists. An expert on cross-cultural communication between the United States and China, he has promoted dialogue between experts from both countries on nuclear arms control and space security.

China’s previous political leaders believed prudence demanded they wait and ride out a nuclear attack—should it come—before retaliating later at a time and place of their choosing. Their strategic patience was celebrated, at home and abroad, as a responsible expression of confidence that would discourage any enemy, including the United States, from attacking China with nuclear weapons in the first place.

But the current commander-in-chief is a new kind of leader. Xi appears to be a man in a hurry, and he has said he wants to make the Chinese military better prepared to fight and win wars, not simply prevent them.

Chinese military strategists expressed their desire to put the country’s nuclear weapons on high alert three years ago. Their language is labored but the meaning is clear:
Citation:

When conditions are prepared and when necessary, we can, under conditions confirming the enemy has launched nuclear missiles against us, before the enemy nuclear warheads have reached their targets and effectively exploded, before they have caused us actual nuclear damage, quickly launch a nuclear missile retaliatory strike.

The strategists argue this is necessary to protect China from being disarmed of its roughly 150 nuclear missiles by a U.S. first strike, even a conventional one. China’s liquid-fueled ICBMs are fixed in identifiable silos and take time to prepare for launch. The military also has mobile solid-fueled ICBMs, but planners worry that mobility is less of a guarantee of survival than it used to be, given U.S. surveillance capabilities. A modest expansion is underway that includes replacing the large single warheads on the liquid-fueled missiles with two or three smaller ones. But the strategists worry that even this expansion will not be enough to guarantee an ability to retaliate.

Chinese engineers know U.S. ballistic missile defense isn’t ready for prime time. Given the countermeasures problem, it may never be. But the strategists aren’t engineers. They simply cannot believe the U.S. government would dump that much money into something that couldn’t work. China has been surprised by new military technology before. The strategists are wary the United States could scale up the size and capabilities of U.S. missile defenses. And they worry that even a marginally effective future BMD system might be able to ward off what few Chinese nuclear missiles survive a first strike to be launched in retaliation.

This is why the military strategists want Xi to put China’s nuclear missiles on high alert: they feel they need to be able to launch them before they are destroyed. And in their minds, at least, a Chinese launch on warning is still a second strike.

Moreover, they wonder, if the United States and Russia keep missiles on high alert, why shouldn’t China?

If Xi finds the case made by his military strategists compelling, he will be overlooking something important. The early warning systems needed to detect and confirm an incoming nuclear attack have been known to give false warning, especially in the early years of their operation. Even if the warning was real, would the Chinese operators be able to distinguish an incoming conventional strike from a nuclear strike? Would that matter if they thought the conventional strike was aimed at their nuclear forces? If China’s military stands up such a system and is given permission to launch on warning, it would create the risk of an accidental or mistaken nuclear launch against the United States.

Avoiding this risk should be a high priority for the White House, especially at a summit focused on nuclear security.

Xi may respond by encouraging Obama to take a harder look at the United States’ own nuclear weapons policy. The U.S. military currently keeps its 450 land-based ICBMs on alert and maintains the option to launch them quickly, even though it has submarine-launched long-range missiles that provide a survivable retaliatory force.

If the only outcome of Obama’s final nuclear security summit is that both nations see the folly of keeping nuclear forces on high alert, history will record it as a turning point in the effort to reduce the risk of nuclear war.

MEET THE ANTI-MUSLIM LEADERS ADVISING DONALD TRUMP AND TED CRUZ

Stephen Piggott

March 28, 2016

The attacks in Brussels on March 22, GOP Presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz issued a call for the United States to “immediately halt the flow of refugees from countries with a significant al-Qaida or ISIS presence.”

Surprisingly, he also called for a “need to empower law enforcement to patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized.” Such statements, coming from a leading presidential candidate, are only the latest examples of anti-Muslim rhetoric making the jump from the firing of hate groups to mainstream political discourse. But such jumps are not random and, in fact, have come after years of planning.

The Center for Security Policy, a hate group that serves as the anti-Muslim movement’s premier think tank, has worked hard to earn the ear of elected officials and has sadly succeeded in this strategy. Of the eight people appointed as advisors to 2016 candidates Donald Trump and Senator Ted Cruz, all have connections to CSP and half hold ranking positions within the group, including its founder, Frank Gaffney.

Listed below are detailed profiles of the eight anti-Muslim advisors Cruz and Trump have appointed to advisory roles in their campaigns.

Frank Gaffney, president of Center for Security Policy, appointed to Ted Cruz’s National Security Coalition on March 17

Frank Gaffney is the founder of the anti-Muslim movement’s preeminent think tank, the Center for Security Policy (CSP). He also is one of the most outspoken anti-Muslim activists in America today, propagating conspiracy theories about the Muslim Brotherhood infiltrating the White House and producing reports calling for a ban on all Muslim immigration to the U.S.

When asked at an event in 2015 about Somali refugees working at meat processing plants in the U.S., for example, Gaffney stated, “I don’t know about you, but it kind of creeps me out that they are getting jobs in the food supply of the United States.” Gaffney has also made efforts to associate with loud-and-proud racists. In September of 2015, Gaffney invited on his radio show Jared Taylor, one of the most prominent white nationalists in America, to discuss the Syrian refugee crisis. During the interview, Gaffney called Taylor’s openly racist American Renaissance website “wonderful.”

Despite such ties to known racists, Gaffney does not operate on the political fringe. In recent years, he and his organization have grown closer to Cruz, with whom he has frequently shared a stage at anti-Muslim events.

In February 2014, Gaffney spoke on a panel titled, “American Security and The Iranian Bomb: Analyzing Threats at Home and Abroad“ with Cruz. A month later, Cruz spoke at a “National Security Action Summit” organized by Breitbart News, which featured a host of anti-Muslim activists including Gaffney and three other members of Cruz’s National Security Coalition. In September 2014, Cruz spoke via video at another CSP co-sponsored Action Summit.

A year later, in February 2015, Cruz spoke at the CSP’s “Defeat Jihad Summit.” Gaffney also held four “National Security Action Summit” events last year in Nevada, South Carolina, New Hampshire and Iowa, all key primary states. Cruz attended the first, in South Carolina, and submitted a video speech for the other three. The CSP summits featured a number of GOP presidential hopefuls speaking alongside notorious anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant figures.

In September 2015, Cruz teamed up with his rival Donald Trump to organize a rally in opposition to the nuclear treaty signed with Iran. CSP co-sponsored the event in D.C.

Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin (Ret.), Executive VP of the anti-LGBT Family Research Council, Appointed to Ted Cruz’s National Security Coalition on March 17

Boykin works for the anti-LGBT Family Research Council (FRC), but is more known for his activism in the anti-Muslim world.

In the past, Boykin, who brings with him a decorated career in the U.S. Army, has worked closely with the Center for Security Policy and has openly stated that Islam should not be protected under the First Amendment. In 2012, Boykin infamously claimed, “The continent of Europe is dark, it is hopelessly lost and it’s going to get worse. Every expert will tell you that by the middle of this century the continent of Europe will be an Islamic continent, and they can’t reverse it, they can’t stop it. It is because they took Jesus out of their societies and it’s been replaced by darkness.”

Last month, Boykin endorsed Ted Cruz for president, claiming Cruz was “a man of character integrity and courage.” It wasn’t a surprise, considering Boykin and Cruz have shared the stage before. In February of 2015, Cruz and Boykin both spoke at the CSP’s “Defeat Jihad Summit” in Washington, D.C. In March last year, Boykin participated in Frank Gaffney’s National Security Action Summit in South Carolina. A year earlier, both Cruz and Gaffney spoke at the Breitbart-sponsored National Security Action Conference in DC.  Boykin also attended and spoke at the Cruz/Trump anti-Iran nuclear deal rally in D.C. in September of 2015.

Claire Lopez – VP for research and analysis at the anti-Muslim Center for Security Policy, Appointed to Ted Cruz’s National Security Coalition on March 17

Lopez, a longtime Gaffney ally, is a key figure at CSP, previously serving as a fellow before becoming vice president of the think tank.

Like her boss Frank Gaffney, Lopez peddles anti-Muslim conspiracy theories. She has long claimed that the Muslim Brotherhood has “infiltrated and suborned the U.S. government to actively assist … the mission of its grand jihad.” In 2013, she wrote a report linking Huma Abedin, deputy chief of staff to then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to the Muslim Brotherhood — a favored allegation that has never been proven. Also in 2013, she stated at a speaking engagement,  “When people in other bona fide religions follow their doctrines they become better people — Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, Jews. When Muslims follow their doctrine, they become jihadists.” In 2014, she said that because Obama’s father was Muslim, that “de facto makes him [Obama] a Muslim,” which in turn explains why the president “attacks and punishes Israel while allowing the Islamic State to grow and conquer.”

Lopez has also participated in a number of events featuring Cruz, including the March 2014 National Security Action summit in Washington, D.C. and the “Defeat Jihad Summit” in February of 2015.

Andy McCarthy – Columnist for National Review, Appointed to Ted Cruz’s National Security Coalition on March 17

McCarthy, like Boykin, is not employed by an anti-Muslim group, but he is very active in the movement, especially on the anti-Muslim speaking circuit.

McCarthy recently claimed that Islam is not a religion and therefore may not deserve legal protections.

In 2010, McCarthy co-authored a CSP-published report titled, “Shariah: The Threat to America.” The report concluded with a number of alarmist recommendations, including a call for U.S. government to halt outreach to Muslim communities “through Muslim Brotherhood fronts whose mission it is to destroy our country from within, as such practices are both reckless and counterproductive.” Other recommendations included warning Imams that they will be charged with sedition if they advocate for Shariah in America. The report also called for dismantling so-called “no-go zones”—non-existent neighborhoods where law enforcement are rumored to be unable to police because they’re heavily Muslim.

McCarthy praised Cruz in a December 2015 National Review column. “Cruz understands that the most immediate enemy the United States confronts on the world stage is Islamic supremacism, which ignites jihadist violence through its state sponsors, terror networks, and activist organizations.” Like Clare Lopez, McCarthy has spoken at anti-Muslim events with Cruz, including the “Defeat Jihad Summit” in 2015 and the second National Security Action Summit in September of 2014.

Fred Fleitz – Senior Vice President for Policy and Programs at the anti-Muslim Center for Security Policy, Appointed to Ted Cruz’s National Security Coalition on March 17

Fleitz is another Center for Security Policy staffer appointed to the Cruz team. Like Clare Lopez, Fleitz served as a CSP fellow before moving up the ranks.

Fleitz is a co-author of a 2015 report published by CSP titled, “The Secure Freedom Strategy: A Plan for Victory Over the Global Jihad Movement.” Other authors of the report include Cruz National Security Coalition members Jerry Boykin, Frank Gaffney and Clare Lopez. The report concludes with a number of radical recommendations including stopping the immigration of “Shariah-adherent” individuals to the U.S.

Fleitz recently attacked President Obama for speaking at a mosque, claiming the mosque had “known terrorist ties.”

Sen. Jeff Sessions – key politician in the anti-Muslim movement, Appointed as Chair of Trump’s National Security Advisory Committee on March 3

Sen. Jeff Sessions is one of the most outspoken anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim federal officials who, unsurprisingly, endorsed Trump last month.

In 2014, Sessions received the “Daring the Odds” award from anti-Muslim hate group the David Horowitz Freedom Center for his efforts to prevent undocumented youth from receiving temporary status in the United States. Previous winners of the award include Pamela Geller, who heads the anti-Muslim groups American Freedom Defense Initiative and Stop the Islamization of America. The Center for Security Policy awarded Sessions with its “Keeper of the Flame” award in October of 2015.

In September 2015, Sessions attacked President Obama’s plan to resettle Syrian refugees in the United States, stating, “It has also been reported that 3 in 4 of those seeking relocation from the Middle East are not refugees but economic migrants from many countries.”

Walid Phares – Anti-Muslim activist and former Lebanese Christian Militia member, Trump revealed Phares is on his council of advisors on March 22, 2016

Walid Phares is a Lebanese Christian with a troubled past. After Mitt Romney announced in 2011 that Phares would serve as co-chair for his Middle East advisory group, Mother Jones revealed that Phares, “was a high ranking political official in a sectarian religious militia responsible for massacres during Lebanon's brutal, 15-year civil war.” Earlier that year, Phares was scheduled to testify at hearings discussing radical Islam that were organized by U.S. Rep. Peter King, a close friend of a number of anti-Muslim groups. King was forced to drop Phares from the witness list after his militia ties became known.

Phares has spoken at several events organized by the Center for Security Policy, including a National Security Group Lunch on in February 2015, and another similar event in December of that year. He has also been a guest on Frank Gaffney’s Secure Freedom Radio show. Phares was also a guest on an ACT! for America series in 2011. ACT! is the largest grassroots anti-Muslim hate group in America, run by Brigitte Gabriel.

Joseph E. Schmitz – Senior Fellow with the anti-Muslim Center for Security Policy, named to Trump’s council of advisors on March 22, 2016

Schmitz spent three years as the Pentagon’s Inspector General before leaving under a barrage of scrutiny. According to the Los Angles Times, “Schmitz slowed or blocked investigations of senior Bush administration officials, spent taxpayer money on pet projects and accepted gifts that may have violated ethics guidelines.”

Today, Schmitz is a senior fellow at the Center for Security Policy. He has been a guest on Frank Gaffney’s Secure Freedom Radio show and in June of 2013, he spoke at a CSP event. CSP also published a book penned by Schmitz, titled “Inspector General Handbook.”

Schmitz is also a co-author of two CSP reports:  “Shariah: The Threat to America,” and “The Secure Freedom Strategy: A Plan for Victory Over the Global Jihad Movement.”

LOOMING WW3 IN SOUTH CHINA SEA : RUSSIA JOINS CONFLICT AS ALLY TO CHINA

Several countries are in a headlock in the Asia Pacific as territorial claims and authorities are challenged. According to new reports, tensions are mounting among Russia and Japan with each country questioning the military moves of the other.

Several countries are making their own moves with regards to the dispute over the South China Sea region. For instance, Japan just activated a radar station in the East China Sea allowing it to establish a permanent intelligence post that can track territories nearby. China expressed its anger over the matter, as reported by Business Insider.

China has been raising flags in the region as it continues with its efforts to militarize the area despite strong opposition from surrounding nations and the United States. This has prompted countries like Japan to make a move on the matter. The country had since made plans of putting up a coastal observation unit west of the main Okinawa Island. As explained by Daigo Shiomitsu, a Ground Self Defense Force lieutenant colonel, this move shall make the country alert to any possible provocation targeted against Japan.

However, it may not only be China that Japan needs to worry about. The country recently expressed concerns about Moscow’s plans to create a naval base on a western Pacific island chain that is also claimed by Tokyo. The statement from Japan came following comments from Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu suggesting that Moscow is looking into the possibility of establishing a naval base on the Kuril Islands.

This development is particularly alarming since both Russia and China are vocal of their strong alliance. Together, these two nations make a powerful colonizer in the contested region. And if ever these two nations joined forces to imposed their might in the region, the United States will automatically be drag in into the equation. One wrong move from any of these players could spell the third world war.

As reported by Morning News USA in June 2015, Russia announced its plan of conducting war games in the pacific together with China and Brunei.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov announced at the time that Russia will conduct its first-ever military exercises with both countries this year, 2016, in the wake of the escalating South China Sea tension. The defense minister cited particular concerns against U.S. policies that destabilize the Asia Pacific region. “We are concerned by US policies in the region, especially since every day it becomes increasingly focused on a systemic containment of Russia and China,” Antonov said at the time.

He also accused the U.S. of contaminating the region with “color revolutions” the way it already inflicted the Middle East and Ukraine. He also highlighted the accusations that the U.S. brought Ukraine into a civil war, resulting into a human catastrophe in the nation. This shall not happen in the disputed region, Antonov hinted.

With regards to the recent plan of Russia to build a naval base in Kuril Islands, chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga expressed heightened concern. “We’ve informed the Russian side through a diplomatic channel that we are concerned about the comment by Defense Minister Shoigu,” The Guardian quoted chief cabinet secretary.  “We’ve also told them that if this led to the reinforcement of Russian military infrastructure on the Northern Territories, that would be incompatible with Japan’s stance and regrettable,” added the official.

NAVY EXPANDS TATTOO OPTIONS, COMMAND BALL CAP WEAR

Story Number: NNS160331-19Release Date: 3/31/2016 2:31:00 PM

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- In response to feedback from the fleet and senior enlisted leadership, the Navy announced two changes to its uniform policy, March 31, in NAVADMIN 082/16.

First, the Navy is updating its tattoo policy and will authorize Sailors to:
* Have one tattoo on their neck that does not exceed one inch in any direction.
* Have visible tattoos below the elbow or knee -- no longer restricting their size or amount.
* Allow Sailors with sleeve tattoos to be assigned to Recruit Training Command and Recruiting Command positions -- previously not allowed.

The Navy's tattoo content restrictions will remain the same: no tattoo located anywhere on the body can be prejudicial to good order, discipline and morale, or be of a nature that brings discredit upon the naval service.

This policy update is being made in response to the increased popularity of tattoos for those currently serving and in the population from which the Navy draws its recruits. It is also meant to ensure the Navy does not miss opportunities to bring in talented young men and women who are willing to serve.

More information on these changes, which go into effect April 30, can be found in NAVADMIN 082/16.

Second, NAVADMIN 082/16 also authorizes commands to immediately wear a coyote-brown command ball cap with the Navy Working Uniform Type II and III. The manner of wear, logos, lettering and overall descriptions can be found in Navy Regulations, Chapter 3, article 3501.8.

The eight-point cover will remain the standard head gear worn with the NWU Type II and III during uniform inspections, special events and as determined by the unit commanding officer.

Ball caps are considered organizational clothing and commands may use appropriated funds to buy them. Information on how commands may purchase these ball caps can be found in NAVADMIN 082/16, and can be found at www.npc.navy.mil.

Complete information on Navy uniform policy and regulation can be found at http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/support/uniforms/Pages/default2.aspx

BREAKING: ARMY SCIENTISTS SUCCESSFULLY 'TELEPORT' SOLDIERS

NATICK, Mass. (April 1, 2016) -- Army scientists have successfully "teleported" a fully equipped squad from a Massachusetts research and development facility to a training area in Germany, the Natick Soldier Systems Center (NSSC) announced today.

The nine human research volunteers, fresh out of Advanced Individual Training, were participating in experiments in the Doriot Climatic Chambers at NSSC when they disappeared and moments later materialized at the Grafenwoehr Training Area, completely unharmed. The chambers are capable of replicating any climate or weather in the world but have never before been used in this manner.

Teleportation, made famous in the "Star Trek" television series and movies, had been -- until what the Army is calling the "Natick incident" -- a hypothetical way of moving objects from place to place. American writer Charles Fort is reported to have coined the word in 1931.

Officials at Natick were elated by the event, which promises to one day revolutionize the way that American troops and equipment are transported around the globe. It also could ultimately make overseas bases obsolete as forces are instead moved from U.S. soil to remote trouble spots in the blink of an eye.

"No one is more impressed by this than I am," said Benjamin Storm, who manages the 61-year-old climatic chambers at Natick. "One moment, I was chatting with the young Soldiers, and the next, they all vanished into thin air."

The Soldiers were dressed in combat gear for the revolutionary experiment and being monitored by Storm and his colleagues when they were sent from one continent to the other. Still photographs of the event were captured in the chambers and have been released by the Army.

After thorough medical examinations at an Army hospital, they were flown back to the U.S. and returned to duty at Natick.

"It's one thing to see Captain Kirk or Mr. Spock do it at the movies, but it's another to have it happen to you in real life," said Pvt. Kelley McCoy, one of the teleported Soldiers. "I felt a little tingling and the next thing you know, I'm in Bavaria. I always wanted to visit Europe, but I figured that I'd go by plane."

Storm and other Natick researchers are now poring over mountains of data from the development in hopes of replicating it. Meanwhile, the Army quickly established a Teleportation Study Task Force, which will be based at Natick. Leading scientists from private industry and academia worldwide are converging on the chambers to lend whatever assistance they can.

According to Storm, a device not unlike the "flux capacitor" seen in the "Back to the Future" movie series was employed during the experiment. This led to immediate speculation that the Army was also working on time travel, but time travel requirements of generating 1.21 gigawatts is no trivial feat.

"We're only concerned with place, not time," said Storm, a twinkle in his eye. "This development could change the entire course of human history."

The Task Force expects to report its initial findings by April 1, 2017.

SLOVENIA TO DEPLOY ARMED FORCES AT THE BORDER AFTER AUSTRIAN ANNOUNCEMENT

Austria now puts an upper limit on the number of migrants and refugees the country is willing to accept. Slovenia reacts by upgrading at the border.

The Slovenian government said on Wednesday that it has asked the parliament to approve the deployment of armed forces at the border to help the police.

- It is one of the initiatives set in motion to gradually step up controls on the flow of migrants, the Slovenian news agency STA writes, citing the Slovenian Defence Minister, Andreja Katic.

The parliament in Slovenia can supposedly vote on the proposal at the beginning of next week. If the proposal is adopted, which would require a two-thirds majority, the military at the border will get police authorization, writes STA.

The announcement comes shortly after neighboring Austria announced that the country from Friday, will not allow more than 3,200 refugees and migrants to cross the border a day. The announcement came from the country's Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner, according to the news agency Reuters.

Austria will also limit the number of people who are allowed to seek asylum, to 80 a day.

- Austria is one of the EU countries that are under most pressure, and we are reaching a breaking point. It goes without saying that you will have to secure your own borders when there is no European solution, says the Minister.

Already Tuesday, Johanna Mikl-Leitner, announced that the country will introduce daily quotas for the number of people who can cross the border.

- There will be a daily quota and a hourly quota and as soon as they are reached, we'll stop letting people through, said Austria's interior minister on Tuesday, at a news conference at the country's busiest border crossing, which is the border with Slovenia.

Last year up to 14,000 migrants and refugees crossed the border every day.

Austria with almost nine million people received 90,000 asylum applications in 2015. It is one of the highest per capita in the EU.

In January, the government said there will put a limit on the number of asylum seekers in the country to 37,500 people a year, and at least 12,500 migrants who have come will be deported.

On Wednesday, the Interior Minister called for countries at the Balkan route to also act more strict.

INNOVATIVE TRAINING ENHANCES READINESS, STRENGTHENS REGIONAL PARTNERSHIPS

March 28, 2016

By Tim Oberle, Eighth Army Public Affairs

YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea (March 28, 2016) -- With over 3.5 billion people, 36 countries, seven of the world's largest Armies and five of the world's declared nuclear nations in the Asia-Pacific region alone, maintaining peace can be challenging. That task is only amplified as the U.S. Army postures itself for reduced budgets and increasingly complex operating environments in the future.

In response to this daunting challenge, U.S. Army Pacific Commander Gen. Vincent K. Brooks developed an "innovation" in 2014 that enables the Army to maintain a heightened level of readiness while making efficient use of existing resources.

"Pacific Pathways is not a new initiative or program start, but an innovation that links a series of U.S. Pacific Command-directed Security Cooperation exercises with allied and partner militaries into a single operation," explained Brooks. "The 'pathway' is the link between these previously-independent bilateral and multilateral exercises, and the unit is mission-tailored and task-organized for the entire series of exercises."

The U.S. Army hosts a series of multilateral exercises throughout the Pacific Theater with countries including the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, India and here in the Republic of Korea. Under the program a small expeditionary "nucleus" deploys to the region and moves from one exercise to the next, morphing at each stop to adapt to the particular needs of each partner nation and corresponding exercise.

As part of this year's rotation, elements of the 1-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division, also known as the "Ghost Brigade", deployed to the Pacific with stops in Thailand for the annual exercise Cobra Gold, in South Korea for Foal Eagle and the Philippines for Balikatan.

While in South Korea, the brigade conducted a combined urban assault exercise, March 15, with the Republic of Korea 16th Mechanized Infantry Brigade at the Rodriguez Live Fire Complex near Pocheon. After only few months into their deployment, Soldiers from the 1-2 SBCT could already see some of the positive benefits of the training and also the inherent difficulty that comes with integrating in a bilateral exercise.

"In Thailand, we focused more on partnership," said Elijah Dixon, a combat medic from the 1-2 SBCT. "Here in Korea we can get a little more in-depth with mount attacks and complex maneuvers because the language barrier is easier to overcome."

When Brooks first started the program he wanted to "develop expeditionary readiness and adaptive leaders in a way not possible during home station training or at the Combat Training Centers". From the reactions of Soldiers participating in this year's training it seems his plan is having its intended effect.

In addition to the benefits experienced by U.S. Soldiers, each partner nation also gains experience and improved interoperability with American forces.

"This training provides South Korea an opportunity to acquire know-how from the U.S.' warfare experiences while giving the U.S. (Soldiers) a chance to learn the geographical features of the Korean Peninsula for real-war applications," said Lt. Col. Kim Seung-Kon, commander of the 16th Mechanized Infantry Brigade.

"It is important that U.S. Soldiers participate in this exercise because (we) will have to conduct combined operations in a real-world situation and by working together it also strengthens our Alliance."

Pacific Pathways could play a pivotal role in the future as expeditionary-sized forces greatly enhance the Army's ability to deliver humanitarian supplies, restore critical infrastructure and provide emergency medical support rapidly. As the Army moves towards its goal of becoming "globally responsive and regionally engaged" Brooks has set the stage for cost-effective success in the Pacific Theater and strengthened the ROK-U.S. Alliance at the same time.

EUCOM ANNOUNCES EUROPEAN REASSURANCE INITIATIVE IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

March 30, 2016

STUTTGART, Germany -- As part of the United States' commitment to increased assurance and deterrence, U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR) will begin receiving continuous troop rotations of U.S.-based armored brigade combat teams (ABCT) to the European theater in February 2017, bringing the total Army presence in Europe up to three fully-manned Army brigades.

As discussed during the announcement of the Fiscal Year 2017 European Reassurance Initiative (ERI) budget proposal, the Army has decided to begin storing "static" equipment, known as Army Prepositioned Stocks (APS), within Europe for contingency operations.

General Phil Breedlove, U.S. European Command (EUCOM) commander said, "This is a big step in enhancing the Army's rotational presence and increasing their combat equipment in Europe. This Army implementation plan continues to demonstrate our strong and balanced approach to reassuring our NATO Allies and Partners in the wake of an aggressive Russia in Eastern Europe and elsewhere. This means our Allies and Partners will see more capability - they will see a more frequent presence of an armored brigade with more modernized equipment in their countries."

The ABCTs will be on nine-month rotations from the U.S. and will bring their own modern equipment to conduct exercises across Atlantic Resolve countries. These rotations will demonstrate our ability to rapidly deploy equipment and forces to Europe by sending U.S.-based rotational forces with their currently assigned equipment. This equipment will be the most modernized the Army has to offer and over the next year will replace the current training equipment in Europe.

When the first rotational armored brigade combat team arrives early next year, the equipment currently used by rotational forces, known as the European Activity Set (EAS), will remain in Europe, be repaired, upgraded, and converted into the core of the APS we announced in February. We plan to have APS stored in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

This equipment will enable rapid deployment of ground forces in response to contingencies throughout the region. It provides additional combat power, if and when needed.

By the end of 2017, there will be a continuous presence of three fully equipped Army Brigade Combat Teams (one Armored, one Airborne, one Stryker); one prepositioned set of combat-ready equipment sufficient to support another Armored Brigade Combat Team; as well as division-level enablers in Europe.

Gen. Breedlove, is attending the Northern European Chiefs of Defense Conference in Riga, Latvia this week, where he is meeting with regional counterparts to reassure Allies of EUCOM's commitment and support to regional security.

SEABROOK, NH - The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will conduct a “full-scale” training exercise at the NextEra Energy Seabrook Station Nuclear Power Plant located in Seabrook on April 8, 2016. The exercise if being organized by FEMA, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and state and local emergency management officials.

“This exercise allows federal teams to examine the ability of the participating local, state and utility officials to protect the health and safety of the public living near the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant in the event of a radiological release,” according to Bruce Brodoff of the FEMA. “FEMA will observe and evaluate governmental responses. The NRC will observe and evaluate the on-site performance of Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant staff.”

Officials from communities in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts, within a 10-mile radius of the plant, are being requested to activate their emergency operations centers during the exercise, according to a press statement.

The organizations will hold a public briefing at 11 a.m. on April 8, at the end of the exercise, at the Courtyard Marriot’s Seacoast Ballroom in Portsmouth. Written comments and questions can be submitted from the public at that time or after the meeting, according to officials.
