An annual multinational exercise organized by the Turkish Navy in the Aegean Sea has begun and will continue through December 4, the NATO military alliance announced in a press release on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — German, Turkish and Greek ships have been sent to join the exercises in a region that faces increased security challenges, the release added.

"NATO navies began a counter-mine warfare exercise in the Aegean Sea on 28 November 2016 , aimed at testing combat readiness and strengthening ties between allies and partners," the release stated.

"NATO’s participation in the NUSRET exercise demonstrates the allies’ strong commitment to Turkey’s security, and contributes to increased stability [/color]," NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu noted in the release.

Last week, Turkish President Recep tayyip Erdogan stressed during the 62nd Parliamentary NATO sessions in Istanbul that Turkey has played an essential role in the alliance since the Cold War, providing political and military support for the organization

MASON, CHARLES DE GAULLE STRIKE GROUP LEADER MEET IN EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN

Story Number: NNS161129-14Release Date: 11/29/2016 1:07:00 PM
By Petty Officer 3rd Class Janweb Lagazo, USS Mason (DDG 87) Public Affairs

MEDITERRANEAN SEA (NNS) -- Leadership from guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87) and French officials from the Charles de Gaulle Strike Group (CDGSG) met while operating together in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, Nov. 25.

Cmdr. Christopher J. Gilbertson, Mason's commanding officer, of Minneapolis, met Rear Adm. Olivier Lebas, commander of the CDGSG, and other French officials to solidify strategies and tactics in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

"It is a privilege and a wonderful opportunity to provide support to CDGSG and OIR," Gilbertson said. "We have worked with many of our multinational partners over the past six months, and the crew has performed admirably every time. We enjoyed a very successful joint operation with the destroyer FS Forbin (D620) earlier this deployment, and look forward to working with our friends and partners again."

Mason is deployed to support maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations. Mason replaced USS Ross (DDG 71), which provided multi-warfare defense support to CDGSG from September to October. The ship's operations are an example of the commitment the U.S. and its NATO allies have to maintaining a safe, secure, and prosperous Europe and Middle East .

CDGSG operations from the Mediterranean Sea work in tandem with OIR efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations by supporting the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), while demonstrating a carrier strike group's ability to perform integrated multinational air strikes.

"The mission of the [CDGSG] is to reinforce and strengthen the French's involvement against [ISIL] in Iraq and Syria," Lebas said. "We are here to participate as a coalition, and while doing so, help build a strong picture of the freedom of maneuvering in this area."

Lebas went on to comment the freedom to maneuver is especially important for an aircraft carrier, as it allows for the "maximum amount" of safety for all ships in the area. He believes securing the maritime environment in this region of the Mediterranean Sea can promote "regional and global economic security ."

"No nation is able to fight [ISIL] alone," Lebas said. "It is a worldwide problem, and we need to be together."

French and U.S. naval forces continue to forge a global network of navies, along with other NATO allies, by collectively working together to share information, experiences, and resources in an effort to foster regional security.

"We coordinate with the actions of the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG) to optimize our scheduling to offer the best support for the coalition," Lebas remarked. "We use this time together to develop our relationship. It's good to have Mason to fuel this relationship for the two navies."

Lebas mentioned the CDGSG as an important factor in supporting Iraqi and Kurdish security forces involved in the battle for Mosul, in Northern Iraq, while engaging in a strong, concerted push towards Raqqa, the Islamic State's self-proclaimed capital in Syria.

"We can bring significant additional force to be able to conduct the battles in both theatres, mostly in Mosul, but also in Raqqa," said Lebas. "We have the sufficient amount of aircraft to support actions in both theatres."

Mason hopes to demonstrate the United States' commitment to the French by providing multi-mission capabilities in key warfare areas, especially missile defense and anti-submarine warfare. As one of the U.S. Navy's two "Bloodhound Award" winners for the best anti-submarine warfare ship for 2015, Mason is a proven expert.

"It's very important for me to have the opportunity to integrate Mason, because it is strong and full of capabilities," Lebas said. "That is also a sign of the strong relationship between the French and U.S. navies, because we have a common enemy and common objective in maintaining freedom of navigation in the Mediterranean Sea, Arabian Sea, Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic. We have relied on each other for many years. We have a strong and vital history together through the difficult and challenging times."

Along with Mason, Ike CSG includes CSG 10 staff, aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), squadrons and staff of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26 staff, guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and USS Monterey (CG 61), and DESRON 26 guided-missile destroyers USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) and USS Nitze (DDG 94).

CHINA THREATENS NATO WITH MILITARY BUILDUP

...A peculiar demonstration of their ambitions became the building of a Chinese naval base in Djibouti. There is already an American one. This African state with favorable geographical position has become a centre of intersection of geopolitical interests. The China's motivation in Djibouti is not only in military-strategic gain. They aspire to protect their economic interests, in particular investments in the oil and gas extraction in this region, as well as to have an access to the Africa's natural resources, exchanging it for financial flows. Military base is an additional insurance.

Now China has become the great ocean-power and a leader in the APR, whither global economic powerhouses are shifting rapidly. "New Silk Road", coupled with the influence in the region and its expansion outward, the cooperation within the SCO, that will transform from the economic integration to collaboration on international security soon, increasing defense industry and nuclear capabilities – all of these makes China a serious threat for NATO, well-known hegemon of the world order.

PROPAGANDE DE GUERRE

SYRIE : REUNION A PARIS LE 10 DECEMBRE DES PAYS QUI REFUSENT UNE LOGIQUE DE "GUERRE TOTALE"

Aujourd'hui

NATO STAGES LARGEST EVER MILITARY DRILLS ON RUSSIAN BORDER AS GLOBAL TENSIONS ESCALATE

NATO troops have launched their largest ever urban warfare military drills in Lithuania amid threats of all out global conflict with Russia.

By Zoe Efstathiou
PUBLISHED: 00:13, Tue, Nov 29, 2016 | UPDATED: 01:50, Tue, Nov 29, 2016

The ‘Iron Sword 2016’ military drills, which are being held close to the Russian border, involve 4,000 troops from Britain, the US, Germany, Canada, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Luxembourg and three baltic states .

They are intended to last until December 2 and will prepare Nato to station 4,000 alliance troops in Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia - a decision taken at the Warsaw summit in July.

According to the Lithuanian defence ministry, the tests will be carried out in the towns of Rukla and Pabrade, close to the Kaliningrad region - a Russian exclave located between Poland and Lithuania.

The military alliance’s decision to boost its global army presence follows Russia’s deployment of S-400 air defence systems and Iskander missile launchers to the Kaliningrad

The Iron Sword drills are being held in Lithuania

Nato slammed the move as “aggressive military posturing” and insisted Moscow has no reason to feel threatened by it.

State Department spokesman for the treaty, John Kirby, has insisted Nato’s role is about defence and the avoidance of conflict, rather than the fuelling of it.

EU TO BOOST JOINT DEFENCE SPENDING

By Bryan McManus
Brussels (AFP) Nov 30, 2016

The EU unveiled ambitious plans Wednesday to boost joint defence spending including on shared assets like drones and helicopters, as concerns grow that President-elect Donald Trump may downgrade the US security commitment.

Trump shocked long-time NATO allies in Europe when he suggested on the campaign trail be would think twice about coming to their aid if they had not paid their defence dues.

That prospect, combined with the Ukraine and migrant crises plus nuclear-armed Britain's shock vote to quit the European Union, have moved security sharply up the bloc's agenda.

"If Europe does not take care of its own security, nobody else will do it for us," European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker said in a statement as the plans were announced.

"A strong, competitive and innovative defence industrial base is what will give us strategic autonomy," said Juncker, who has long pushed for a more active EU military role and ultimately what he calls a "European Army".

To stand on its own two feet, the EU "must invest in the common development of technologies and equipment of strategic importance -- from land, air, sea and space capabilities to cyber security," he said.

EU foreign affairs head Federica Mogherini said this was not about the bloc striking out on its own given the doubts raised by a Trump presidency, or about it stepping on NATO's toes.

"We are not talking about a European headquarters here ... about a European army," Mogherini told reporters.

"It is about streamlining what we have to make EU defence work better ... it is not about competition or duplication," she said, adding that all member states were "fully on board" in support of the plans.

Some 22 of the EU's 28 member states also belong to NATO and several of them, led by Britain, oppose any measure which they fear could undermine the US-led alliance.

- Defence 'single market' -

What is known as the European Defence Action Plan targets more efficient defence spending and increased joint research and procurement.

It proposes increasing the current 25 million euros ($27 million) allocated to defence research in the overall EU budget to 90 million euros by 2020, when it should be replaced by a dedicated programme worth 500 million annually.

Another fund, potentially worth five billion euros per year, would help member states acquire military assets jointly to reduce the cost, the statement said, citing as examples drones or helicopters.

EU Commissioner for Jobs and Growth Jyrki Katainen stressed that this five billion euros was not new spending and not EU money -- it would simply be up to member states to band together as and when they wanted to procure new equipment.

The overall programme is meant to strengthen what the statement said was the "Single Market for Defence" -- putting it on a par with the EU's other single markets which aim to break down national barriers, be it in telecoms or energy.

Total annual defence spending by the 28 EU member states comes to nearly 200 billion euros ($215 billion), accounted for largely by Britain on 48 billion euros, France 39 billion euros and Germany 35 billion euros.

The Commission proposals will now be discussed by member states before going up to an EU leaders' summit in December set to be dominated by concerns over what tack Trump will take as president.

RUSSIA GETS PERMISSION TO USE IRAN'S HAMADAN AIR BASE FOR SYRIA AIRSTRIKES

By Allen Cone   |   Nov. 30, 2016 at 12:12 PM Follow @upi

MOSCOW, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Russia is considering using Iran's Hamadan airbase to launch airstrikes on insurgents in Syria if its aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, leaves Syria's coastline on the Mediterranean for a new mission, Russian and Iranian officials said.

"The necessity to use the airfield of the airbase in Hamadan could emerge if Admiral Kuznetsov carries out another operation and [Russia] will not be able to use it for airstrikes against terrorists in Syria," Viktor Ozerov on Saturday told RIA Novosti,, Russia's state-operated international news agency

Earlier in the day, Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan said that Iran might allow Russia to use Hamadan in its air operation against militants in Syria.

Hossein Sheikholeslam, an adviser to Iran's foreign minister, repeated the offer Tuesday, saying: "If the situation demands it, like it did in August, we're ready to allow Russian warplanes to take off and refuel at this airfield."

Iran allowed Russia to operate from the base in mid-August. The jets returned to Russia after completing their anti-terror mission one week later.

Iran became uneasy about the situation because the Iranian constitution prohibits the presence of any foreign forces on Iranian soil.

The New York Times reported Iran thought Russia was too public about the privilege.

"I'd like to emphasize that Iran never gave to Russia full control over the Noje base in Hamadan. This airbase belongs to Iran and all activities at the base are controlled by Tehran," Sheikholeslam said.

The Russian Aerospace Forces began their operation in Syria on Sept. 30, 2015, at Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's request.

MEDIA SILENT AS HOUSE PASSES RESOLUTION FOR SYRIAN NO-FLY ZONE  — PROVOKING WAR WITH RUSSIA

Hillary Clinton’s loss was a shock to the purveyors of U.S. military hegemony, who saw in her an easier path to keep the Syria conflict going. Secretary of State Clinton was instrumental in the early days of Syria intervention, in 2010 making a series of demands for Syria to get in line behind the U.S. vision for the Middle East.

When Bashar al-Assad refused to roll over, regime change became the talking point of Washington think tanks and mainstream media echo chambers. Clinton promised during her campaign to ramp up action in Syria, to the delight of the same neocons who brought the Iraq invasion. She acknowledged that many civilians would die if the U.S. set up a no-fly zone.

Establishment of a no-fly zone is the next crucial step toward full-scale war. It would mean Syrian planes could not fly in their own airspace and would bring the disturbing prospect of U.S. planes shooting down Russian planes — which are operating there on invitation from Syria to help battle ISIS.

Soon after the presidential election, key warmongers in Congress began formulating plans to make increased conflict a near certainty, complete with the kind of propaganda peddled before the Iraq attack. While everyone was distracted by the election of Trump, six representatives took advantage of the lame-duck session and suspended “normal rules” to bring us H.R. 5732.

The Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2016 includes Section 303, titled: Assessment of potential effectiveness of and requirements for the establishment of safe zones or a no-fly zone in Syria.

As reported by Consortium News:

“Late in the day, on Nov. 15, one week after the U.S. elections, the lame-duck Congress convened in special session with normal rules suspended so the House could pass House Resolution 5732, the “Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act” calling for intensifying the already harsh sanctions on Syria, assessing the imposition of a “no fly zone” inside Syria (to prevent the Syrian government from flying) and escalating efforts to press criminal charges against Syrian officials…

Most strikingly, the resolution calls for evaluating and developing plans for the United States to impose a “no fly zone” inside Syria, a sovereign nation, an act of war that also would violate international law as an act of aggression. It also could put the U.S. military in the position of shooting down Russian aircraft.”

The suspension of rules procedure is supposed to be used for “non-controversial” bills such as naming Post Offices, but this small group of lawmakers used it to pass a drastically important bill. The blatant abuse of power shows the desperation in the neocon ranks.

Donald Trump has spoken out against regime change, but considering his unpredictable behavior, the actual position of his coming administration is anybody’s guess. Trump’s pick of Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn as national security adviser is not a good portent.

Earlier this month, Flynn strongly supported Turkish President Erdogan in an op-ed at The Hill, suggesting he is under siege by “radical Islam” and desperately needs our help. Flynn seemed to dismiss Erdogan’s crackdown on political dissidents and the dubious circumstances of the attempted coup which allowed Erdogan to solidify his power.

It may be no coincidence that just days ago, Turkey — a NATO ally — urged to U.S. to move forward with a no-fly zone in Syria. Incidentally, no one seems to have paid attention to a damning investigative report finding that the “Turkish government under President Erdogan is covertly providing direct military, financial and logistical support to ISIS, even while claiming to fight the terror network.”

While both Russian and U.S. bombings have resulted in civilian deaths, completely missing in the Western narrative on Syria is how U.S. intervention in the interest of regime change was the catalyst for today’s hellish conditions in that country, and the resulting flood of Syrian refugees.

As we have reported before, the Pentagon nurtured the Salafist sect in eastern Syria — to help the U.S. and its allies achieve regime change – and these extremists went on to become the violent terror group called ISIS.

In order to keep the American public ignorant of reality in Syria, and to maintain the specter of terrorism in order to justify massive military spending, politicians’ propaganda must be so complete they believe it themselves.

This was demonstrated during the 40-minute “debate” session among the six lawmakers who pushed the bill through.

They claimed the Obama administration has been “sitting back and doing nothing” as violence worsens, and Assad is “killing millions of his citizens.” All of this is, of course, false.
Citation:

“By late 2011, the U.S. was actively coordinating, training and supplying armed opposition groups. When Muammar Gaddafi’s Libyan government was toppled in fall 2011, the CIA oversaw the diversion of Libyan weapons to the Syrian armed opposition, as documented in the Defense Intelligence Agency report of October 2012.

These weapons transfers were secret. For the public record, it was acknowledged that the U.S. was supplying communications equipment to the armed opposition while U.S. “allies” — Saudi Arabia and Qatar — were supplying the weaponry. This is one reason that Saudi purchases of weapons skyrocketed during this time period; they were buying weapons to replace those being shipped to the armed opposition in Syria. It was very profitable for U.S. arms manufacturers.

Huge weapons transfers to the armed opposition in Syria have continued to the present, with the U.S. government even more directly involved. This past spring, Janes Defense reported the details of a U.S. delivery of 2.2 million pounds of ammunition, rocket launchers and other weaponry to the armed opposition.

So, the political claims that the U.S. has been inactive are baseless. In reality, the U.S. has done everything short of a direct attack on Syria. And the U.S. military is starting to cross that line. On Sept. 17, the U.S. air coalition conducted a series of airstrikes on the Syrian Army in Deir Ezzor, killing 80 Syrian soldiers and enabling ISIS to launch an attack on the position. Claims that it was a “mistake” are highly dubious.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates the actual death toll as: “killed pro-Syrian forces – 108,000; killed anti-government forces – 105,000; killed civilians – 89,000.”

In no way is this downplaying the significance of these horrible deaths at the hands of warring forces. But it is extremely important to point out the highly exaggerate claims of U.S. politicians in their push to bring even more death and destruction to Syria.

The Friends Committee for National Legislation analyzed House Resolution 5732 and found it would make a peace agreement more difficult, not less.

Any peace agreement that leaves Bashar al-Assad in power would be seen as a failure of U.S. hegemonic foreign policy, which has pushed regime change for years. It would also be seen as a victory for Russia, which is helping Assad fight ISIS and U.S.-funded “moderate rebels” attempting to overthrown Assad.

Even the title of the resolution — ‘Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act’ – is based on a CIA-funded propaganda hoax involving alleged torture photos that was used to sabotage a 2014 effort at peace negotiations.

Unsurprisingly, the Israel lobby is campaigning for the passage of HR5732, as Israel is officially at war with Syria and continues to illegally occupy the Syrian Golan Heights. Removing Assad would make things easier for Israel to permanently seize this fossil fuel-rich area, and would strike a blow to its perceived enemies in Lebanon and Iran.

Despite the grave ramifications of HR 5732, the media is silent. The media outlets now professing to hold the monopoly on real journalism have not said a word about the shocking abuse of “suspended rules” in the House, and the utter propaganda being spewed out by lawmakers, to save their crusade for regime change in Syria — even if it means World War III.

Rafael Miranda, executive officer of Naval Support Facility (NSF) Redzikowo, meets with Zenon Berezanski, assistant director of the 28 S'upski Fighter Regiment School in Redzikowo. Base leadership met with the school to establish a relationship for future community engagement. REDZIKOWO, Poland (NNS) -- Commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA) officially established Naval Support Facility (NSF) Redzikowo, Nov. 30, during a base establishment and change of command ceremony in Poland.

During the same ceremony, the Polish Force Protection Battalion received their battle flag, officially establishing the host-nation unit which will cooperatively provide security to the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System (AAMDS) Poland.

"The establishment of Naval Support Facility Redzikowo marks the next critical step in this U.S. presidentially-mandated commitment to adapt our capabilities to the threat environment, and reassure our allies and partners that the United States stands ready to fulfill its responsibilities for mutual defense," said Rear Adm. Rick Williamson, commander, Navy Region EURAFSWA.

The ceremony marked the commencement of operations at the installation; however, administratively, NSF Redzikowo became a command Oct. 1. Since that time, Capt. Christopher Landis has commanded the unit and oversaw construction of the facilities, manning requirements, and bilateral cooperation with the Polish Security Forces and the local community. He was the Navy Installations Command lead officer for the facility for approximately 16 months prior to taking command.

"This is a great day for me, as I am very proud of what my team and I have accomplished," said Landis during his speech at the ceremony. "To our Polish hosts, thank you for truly making us part of your family here in Redzikowo and the Gmina Slupsk. We are honored to live among you and cherish the friendships and relationships we have built during our short time here."

Landis also thanked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency for their assistance and cooperation in welcoming him, and for their coordination in the establishment of the installation. He also thanked his family for their continued support during his time overseeing the initial phases of the base establishment. Landis turned over his duties as commanding officer to Capt. Ricky Gilbert.

Gilbert is a career limited duty security officer and NSF Redzikowo will be his first command. In fact, Gilbert is the first security limited duty officer to command an installation.

"It is a great privilege and honor to relieve Captain Chris Landis," said Gilbert. "Over the last year he has demonstrated exceptional skill and judgement and has given me a solid foundation."

He added he looks forward to working with his Polish counterparts and the entire community.

Following the change of command ceremony, the Polish Force Protection Battalion received their official guidon, which is the official symbol of the unit. Col. Witold Bartoszek, commander, Polish Force Protection Battalion of Redzikowo, stated this historic ceremony of the combined establishment symbolizes the great cooperation which exists between the United States and Poland.

NSF Redizkowo will provide key support to the AAMDS, including the lines of operations such as security, safety, housing, and what is called the core that keep the installations running, such as utilities. The installation and its facilities remain under construction, as does the AAMDS Poland.

As a persistent shore presence for the U.S. Navy in Europe, NSF Redzikowo will cooperate with the host nation and Polish forces to strengthen relationships in order to increase peace and security throughout the region. Once complete, the AAMDS Poland will host the upgraded SM-3 Block IIA missiles. The delivery of this improved weapons system, and the increased ballistic missile defense (BMD) infrastructure under EPAA, will improve the defensive coverage against medium- and intermediate-range threats from outside the Euro-Atlantic area.

The European Phased Adaptive Approach is the United States' multi-phase effort to field capabilities offered as the U.S. voluntary contribution to the NATO BMD mission to counter threats from outside the Euro-Atlantic area. This multi-year, multi-phase effort includes Aegis BMD-capable ships based in Rota, Spain; AAMD sites in Redzikowo, Poland, and Deveselu, Romania; a forward-deployed radar in Turkey, and a command and control network located at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- Guided-missile cruiser USS Hue City (CG 66) departed Naval Station Mayport to begin a Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) with the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group (GHWBCSG), Nov. 28.

During COMPTUEX, the final phase in preparing the cruiser for its upcoming deployment, Hue City will test its operational readiness through cooperative efforts within GHWBCSG.

Hue City will be evaluated on its ability to defend critical assets in the battle group by exercising pre-planned responses through a series of varied scenarios. These realistic and challenging scenarios will allow the strike group to gauge readiness on multiple mission areas, including maritime interdiction operations, counter-piracy, and strike warfare.

"The 'Golden Dragons' of Hue City are looking forward to the operational challenges presented at COMPTUEX," said Capt. Dan Gillen, Hue City commanding officer. "This is a great exercise that will test our skills to collectively operate and fight as a strike group. Hue City Sailors have trained hard and are anxious to get on deployment."

The exercise will vastly improve Hue City's familiarization with GHWBCSG, and establish a proficient warfighting team. Upon the successful completion of COMPTUEX, Hue City will be considered capable of deploying for worldwide operations.

GHWBCSG is comprised of aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77), Carrier Air Wing 8, Destroyer Squadron 22, guided-missile destroyers USS Truxtun (DDG 103) and USS Laboon (DDG 58), and guided-missile cruisers USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) and Hue City.

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy will christen its newest Virginia-class fast attack submarine, the future USS Colorado (SSN 788), during an 11 a.m. EDT ceremony Saturday, Dec. 3 at General Dynamics Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, Connecticut.

The Honorable Ray Mabus, secretary of the Navy, will deliver the ceremony's principal address. His daughter, Anne Mabus, is serving as the ship's sponsor.

"The christening of the future USS Colorado is an example of our enduring partnership with our nation's shipbuilders, and this ceremony marks a milestone along the journey to add another submarine to our Navy fleet-a fleet that will reach more than 300 ships by 2019," Mabus said. "Colorado and its crew will, for decades to come, carry the American spirit and the name of this great state around the world as a testament to the hard work and patriotism of those who built SSN 788 and the people who call Colorado home."

Colorado (SSN 788) is the 15th Virginia-class fast attack submarine and the fifth Virginia-class Block III submarine. The ship began construction in 2015 and is scheduled to commission in 2017. This next-generation attack submarine provides the Navy with the capabilities required to maintain the nation's undersea superiority well into the 21st century.

The submarine will be the fourth U.S. Navy ship to be commissioned with the name Colorado. The first Colorado was a three-masted steam screw frigate that participated in the Union Navy's Gulf Blockading Squadron and that fought in the Second Battle of Fort Fisher with then Lt. George Dewey, serving as her executive officer. In the early years of the 20th Century, the second Colorado (ACR-7) was a Pennsylvania-class armored cruiser that escorted convoys of men and supplies to England during World War I. The third ship of her name, the lead ship of the Colorado class of battleships (BB-45), supported operations in the Pacific theater throughout World War II, surviving two kamikaze attacks and earning seven battle stars.

Colorado has the capability to attack targets ashore with highly accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert long-term surveillance of land areas, littoral waters or other sea-based forces. Other missions include anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare, mine delivery and minefield mapping, and special forces delivery and support.

Virginia-class submarines, built under a unique teaming arrangement between General Dynamics Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News, are 7,800 tons and 377 feet in length, have a beam of 34 feet and can operate at more than 25 knots submerged. They are built with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship-reducing lifecycle costs while increasing underway time.

PHILIPPINE SEA DEPARTS FOR COMPOSITE TRAINING UNIT EXERCISE

Story Number: NNS161202-09Release Date: 12/2/2016 11:19:00 AM

By Ensign Winter Rae, USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) Public Affairs

MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- Guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) departed its homeport to participate in a Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) in preparation for its upcoming deployment as part of George H. W. Bush Carrier Strike Group (GHWBCSG), Nov. 28.

During COMPTUEX, the final phase in training for deployment, Philippine Sea will test its operational readiness through cooperative efforts within GHWBCSG.

Philippine Sea's participation in COMPTUEX is aimed to test the crew's ability to react proficiently and to cooperate with other assets of GHWBCSG in realistic and challenging scenarios which could potentially occur during deployment.

The exercise consists of a variety of training evolutions including anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, strike warfare, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, irregular warfare, counter piracy, counter proliferation, and maritime interdiction scenarios.

"It is incredibly exciting to be able to head out to sea and display the capabilities of this mighty warship," said Lt. Jeramy Brux, Philippine Sea's operations officer. "The Philippine Sea crew has been preparing for this event far in advance, and they are ready to take on the challenge."

US, ROK NAVIES CONDUCT WORKING GROUP TO STRENGTHEN ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE

BUSAN, Republic of Korea (NNS) -- U.S. and Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy leaders from across the region met in Busan to discuss ways in which both navies can improve ASW capabilities, Dec. 1-2.

The two-day ASW Working Group, co-hosted by Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea (CNFK) and ROK Fleet, is the fifth meeting focused solely on ASW since the cooperation charter was signed in 2014.

"Submarine warfare is a known threat not just to the ROK but to the region," said Rear Adm. Kim, Jong-Il, , the deputy commander of ROK Fleet. "This working group is important because the U.S. and ROK navies must continue to work together in strengthening our ASW capabilities."

The working group, consisting of 17 U.S. and ROK commands, evaluated the effectiveness of the current agreement, and further synchronized all ASW improvement efforts to include training, exercises, and assessments.

Rear Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of CNFK and working group co-chair, echoed Kim's sentiment and emphasized the importance of the working group.

"Anti-submarine warfare is complex," Cooper said to the group during his opening remarks, "and to be successful, the complexity demands our attention and full buy-in. The threat of submarine warfare is real so that is why I am excited to see such a large group participate in this year's discussion."

Cooper concluded his remarks by thanking the more than 60 U.S. and ROK personnel in attendance for their dedication to developing training scenarios to enhance combined capabilities across all ASW domains from the subsurface, surface, and air.

"What you are doing here, from the discussions today to the table top exercise tomorrow, is important," said Cooper. "The effort and attention we put into this working group will benefit the security of the region so your attendance here matters."

Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea is the regional commander for the U.S. Navy in the Republic of Korea and provides expertise on naval matters to area military commanders, including the commander of the United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, and U.S. Forces Korea

HERE WE GO AGAIN : RUSSIA IS ‘No. 1 THREAT’ TO UNITED STATES, AIR FORCE SECRETARY CLAIMS

The dying Obama administration's Pentagon seems determined to whip up conflict with Moscow in the few weeks it has left

US Air Force Secretary Deborah James

The Secretary of the US Air Force has once again claimed that Russia is the “No. 1 threat” faced by the US, with several defense officials expressing similar opinions. It follows promises by US President-elect Donald Trump to improve relations with Moscow.

“Russia is the No. 1 threat to the United States. We have a number of threats that we’re dealing with, but Russia could be, because of the nuclear aspect, an existential threat to the United States,” Air Force Secretary Deborah James told Reuters at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum on Saturday.

She went on to speak of “very worrying” incidents of “very dangerous airmanship” by Russia, as well as alleged cyber-attacks by Russian hackers on US institutions.

James’ statements were echoed by chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson and Pentagon chief arms buyer Frank Kendall, all of whom voiced growing concern about what they claim is Russia’s increasingly aggressive behavior.

Richardson told Reuters that increased Russian naval activities are taking place across the globe. He cited Moscow’s deployment of a carrier strike group to the Mediterranean, the firing of missiles from ships in the Caspian Sea, increased submarine activities in the northern Atlantic, and a growing naval presence in the Pacific.

He said there are continuing incidents involving Russian aircraft buzzing US vessels, with some coming as close as 30 feet. He also cited cases where ships were allegedly behaving “erratically.”

“It’s all for public consumption,” Richardson said, claiming that Russian ships often filmed the encounters and edited them to make it appear as if US ships were at fault.

Richardson went on to state that Washington and Moscow have an agreement to limit and discuss incidents at sea, but that the accord appears to be having limited impact on curbing such incidents.

“More communication with Russia would be a valuable thing,” Richardson said, noting that dialogue between US and Russian naval officers has ceased since Russia’s reunification with Crimea following the 2014 referendum.

Meanwhile, Kendall said that US policy, which had previously been focused on threats in the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East, is now being focused more on Russia.
“Their behavior has caused us… to rethink the balance of capabilities that we’re going to need,” he said.

Speaking at the conference, Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, accused Russia of aiming to counter NATO and undermine its credibility while limiting the ability of the US military to project power around the world.

“They are operating with a frequency and in places that we haven’t seen for decades,” he said, noting Russia’s involvement in Ukraine, Crimea, and Syria.

Army Secretary Eric Fanning also told a panel at the conference that Russia was acting in a “destabilizing way.”

SUEZ CANAL (NNS) -- The Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG) entered the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of European allies and regional and coalition partners as part of a routine deployment, Dec. 4.

Aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69)(Ike) transited the Suez Canal, accompanied by guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) and guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56), after five months of providing air support operations in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and conducting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the Arabian Gulf.

In support of OIR, the strike group joined coalition partners to conduct air strikes in Iraq and Syria. Since June 28, Ike with embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 completed 1,685 combat sorties and expended 1,581 ordnance from both the Arabian Gulf and Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

"The presence of the Ike CSG in the Mediterranean demonstrates the capability of the U.S. Navy to conduct precision strikes on ISIL targets in support of Operation Inherent Resolve from multiple theaters," said Rear Adm. James Malloy, commander, CSG 10. "It highlights the mobility, flexibility, and power projection capability of the Navy's globally-deployed force. And with a mobile and sustainable warship like this aircraft carrier and with our strike group cruisers and destroyers, we can operate where and when we choose and take the fight to the enemy, whether it is in the Arabian Gulf or Mediterranean Sea."

While in the Arabian Gulf, Sailors aboard "the Mighty Ike" partook in three port visits to the partner nations of Bahrain and United Arab Emirates. This was a first for many of the 5,200 Sailors to experience to explore these Arab nations, and to learn firsthand about Middle Eastern culture and history. To further the experience, the "Ike-Battle Axe Team" welcomed regional partners aboard the aircraft carrier for a day at sea. These embarks highlighted the close relationship and mutual interests the U.S. Navy has with its regional partners to protect freedom of navigation and regional stability in a dynamic environment.

The strike group previously conducted combat operations from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea from June 28 to July 7. Ike's ability to support OIR from the Mediterranean and the Arabian Gulf demonstrates the flexibility and capability of U.S. naval forces.

Malloy explained, "The performance of the Ike CSG to date has been impressive. This team is combat proven and dedicated to the mission; they understand the importance of working with our coalition partners from the region and around the globe, and feel a sense urgency to defeat ISIL and protect innocent lives."

The Ike CSG brings multi-mission capable platforms to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations with strike; ballistic missile defense; and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities to support U.S. allies, as well as regional and coalition partners.

The Ike CSG consists of Ike, the squadrons of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26 staff, San Jacinto and USS Monterey (CG 61), and Roosevelt, USS Mason (DDG 87), and USS Nitze (DDG 94). CVW 3 includes Strike Fighter Squadrons (VFA) 32 "Swordsmen," VFA 86 "Sidewinders," VFA 105 "Gunslingers," and VFA 131 "Wildcats;" Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron (VAQ) 130 "Zappers;" Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 123 "Screwtops;" Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 40 "Rawhides;" Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74 "Swamp Foxes;" and Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 7 "Dusty Dogs."

Ike, embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, and Ike CSG are deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, maritime security operations, and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

NOW AVAILABLE - "CRISIS, CONFLICT & CONTINUITY : NEWS AND COMMENTARY FROM THE 2016 DEFENSE ONE SUMMIT"

A must-read eBook from the Defense One team, debriefing the conversations from the 4th annual event

The 4th annual Defense One Summit, which convened on November 17 in Washington, D.C., was a day of questions as much as answers. Who will lead in the Trump administration? What will happen to the war on the Islamic State? What will a Trump presidency mean for multilateral alliance like NATO, which he questioned?

We've compiled writings from that day, including a commentary from U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein, in which the chief outlines his vision of a digitally interconnected future of combined arms.

NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- The Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG) resumed support of Operation Inherent Resolve, Dec. 6, launching sorties from the Eastern Mediterranean.

Simultaneously, elements of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) continued conducting precision air strikes against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) targets in Sirte, Libya, from amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) as part of Operation Odyssey Lightning to support Libyan Government of National Accord-aligned forces fighting there.

Quote:

"U.S. 6th Fleet is fighting 'Daesh' on multiple fronts, simultaneously supporting three combatant commanders. As a flexible, adaptive force, we are committed to defeating Daesh, we are committed to our NATO allies and partners, and we are 'where it matters, when it matters.'" - Vice Adm. Christopher W. Grady, Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet

Quick Facts:

U.S. 6th Fleet is concurrently supporting three geographic combatant commanders: U.S. Central Command, U.S. Africa Command, and U.S. European Command.

The Ike CSG returned to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations Dec. 4. It had previously operated in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations, conducting strikes from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea from June 28 to July 7, completing 116 sorties in support of OIR.

Ike CSG consists of aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and USS Monterey (CG 61), and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26 with associated guided-missile destroyers USS Roosevelt (DDG 80), USS Mason (DDG 87), and USS Nitze (DDG 94).

Operation Inherent Resolve demonstrates the deep commitment of the U.S. and regional partner nations to eliminating the terrorist group ISIL and the threat it poses to the international community.

Wasp is deployed as part of the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations to support maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts. Commander, Amphibious Squadron 6 commands the Wasp ARG, which consists of amphibious dock landing ship USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41), amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio (LPD 17), and Wasp. The 22nd MEU is currently embarked on the Wasp ARG.

Since Aug. 1, the 22nd MEU had been conducting precision air strikes against ISIL targets in Sirte, Libya, from the Wasp ARG as part of Operation Odyssey Lightning to support Libyan Government of National Accord-aligned forces fighting there.

Both Wasp and San Antonio conducted sorties in support of OOL during their time in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

NAVAL WAR COLLEGE SEEKS PAPERS ON WOMEN, PEACE, SECURITY

Story Number: NNS161206-14Release Date: 12/6/2016 10:54:00 AM

By Daniel S. Marciniak, U.S. Naval War College Public Affairs

NEWPORT, R.I. (NNS) -- U.S. Naval War College is issuing a "call for papers" in preparation of its 5th annual Women, Peace and Security Conference to be held, August 2017, at the college.

In an effort to gather theoretical and practical ideas from a wider audience not normally represented in a limited conference format, the conference series chair is soliciting papers from academics, researchers, military personnel, non-governmental organizations, and individuals who have an interest or experience in issues pertaining to WPS.

"Conferences have limited room for participants," said Mary Raum, NWC professor and chair of the WPS Conference series. "To have available, online and in the networked world, some quality thoughts on components of WPS from thinkers and practitioners who have a direct tie to the subjects being discussed is an invaluable resource."

"This call for papers will allow for a broader reach in exchanging ideas and enable us to network on a global scale -- a first step for formalizing the sharing of ideas allied with conference precepts," Raum added.

Since the inception of the U.S. National Action Plan on WPS in 2011, NWC has been at the forefront of exploration into national and international issues involving WPS, working toward the goal of empowering women in conflict prevention and peace.

According to Raum, the conference continues to grow in perspective and scope to ensure the participation and inclusion of ideas from sister services and international partners across the globe.

"Any person tasked with protecting the national interest must be aware of the linkages between the security of women and the security of states," said Raum. "They should also be aware of the broad-level interconnections of the role of WPS with military, economic, and social freedoms around the globe."

In support of the conference theme, "The Next Decade: Amplifying the Women, Peace and Security Agenda," those with an interest or experience in WPS issues are encouraged to submit a paper on one of the following subjects:

- Department of Defense programs and issues (with particular interest in the Pacific hemisphere, peace and support operations, security force training, education, and international joint programs).
- Female populations and international piracy.
- Cyber violence, internet recruiting and links to female terrorism.
- Sexual violence and human trafficking.
- Gender and policy (to include discussions on the post-election dynamics of the "next four years").
- Humanitarian aid and disaster relief.
- Academic programs in the field of WPS.
- International security (with particular emphasis on Russia, China, and inclusive security inequalities).

"Being a contributor to this call for papers will allow for an additional avenue of exchange between theorists and practitioners in academia, military, and non-governmental organizations," said Raum. "These ideas are important for better operationalizing WPS components in the most meaningful way possible."

Proposals must be submitted by June 1, 2017.

Papers should be in the English language only and saved as a Word document. The maximum word count is 3,000 words, double spaced with a 12-pitch font. Submissions should be emailed to mary.raum@usnwc.edu with the subject line heading, "WPS Call for Papers: Last Name."

Selected papers will be published and accessible via the NWC website at http://www.usnwc.edu.

«NOUS DEVONS AGIR, Y COMPRIS UNILATERALEMENT» : LE DISCOURS TRES MUSCLE D'OBAMA A L'ARMEE AMERICAINE

6 déc. 2016, 23:42

 Source: Reuters

President Obama on His Approach to Counterterrorism over the Last Eight Years

https://medium.com/@WhiteHouse/president-obama-on-his-approach-to-counterte…
