PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- U.S. and Canadian Sailors completed a Task Group Exercise (TGEX), off the coast of Southern California, Oct. 7-11.

TGEX is a U.S. and Canadian, multi-warfare exercise designed to train independent deploying ships in various mission areas including air defense, anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare and maritime interdiction operations.

"This exercise was a great training opportunity in all warfare areas," said Capt. Timothy Kott, commanding officer, USS Mobile Bay. "Everything we did this week stresses our basic warfighting capabilities and doing it with one of our closest partners makes it that much better. Bilateral exercises allow us to flex command and control and be able to operate together with some of our closest partners where we have the same maritime interests."

The ships also took part in a large-scale live firing exercise, which showcased the arsenal of both navies. Among the weapons fired were the MK-45 5-inch gun, close-in weapons system, and the MK-38 25-mm machine gun.

"When we deploy, we often deploy as part of a coalition, so it's key that we all operate on the same page," said Canadian Commodore Bob Auchterlionie.

U.S. Navy ships that participated included Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), Areleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Dewey (DDG 105), the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates USS Ingraham (FFG 61), USS McClusky (FFG 41) and USS Gary (FFG 51).

Her Majesty's Canadian ships included Halifax-class frigates HMCS Ottawa (FFH 341) and HMCS Regina (FFH 334), the auxiliary oiler replenishment ship HMCS Protecteur (AOR 509).

Joint, interagency and international relationships strengthen U.S. Third Fleet's ability to respond to crises and protect the collective maritime interests of the U.S. and its allies.

MessagePosté le: Mer 16 Oct - 22:34 (2013)    Sujet du message: DHS/FEMA EARTHQUAKE FALSE FLAG EXERCISE TO COINCIDE WITH U.S. DEFAULT. Répondre en citant

Posted by Paul W Kincaid World news Monday, October 14th, 2013

The DHS/FEMA and the Washington Military Department (WMD) will conduct a Massive Earthquake Drill on Oct. 17, 2013 – the date the U.S. defaults if Congress doesn’t raise its debt limit.  A staged military exercise called “The Great Washington ShakeOut”, will be executed in the heart of the nation’s capitol, on exactly the same day the U.S. could default.  Military personnel from the Washington Military Department will be prepositioned throughout Washington DC on October 17, 2013.  Why conduct an earthquake drill in Washington DC when Washington DC does not sit on any earthquake fault line?  Same reason why the U.S. government held a major military exercise on the East Coast of the United States, that simulated airline hijacking on September 11, 2001 – a false flag.

Seismology charts proved that the 5.8 magnitude tremor that rattled the entire East Coast including Washington DC in 2011 was not a natural earthquake but an earthquake that was induced by an underground nuclear detonation. The image above is a seismograph image from the Science Center of Washington and Lee University, which is located about 85 miles southwest of the earthquake’s epicenter in Mineral. The green lines indicates the tremor that was felt in Washington DC which caused damaged to the Washington Memorial and the Washington National Cathedral. The black lines is a transparent overlay of a seismograph image from a pdf file from Virginia Division Mineral Resources on Earthquakes. That file describes a typical natural occurring earthquake as:

“When a fault ruptures, energy is released in the form of seismic waves. The first waves to reach the earth’s surface are primary or “P” waves (Figure 2). P waves are compressional waves that travel at a speed of about four miles per second near the surface – faster as depth increases. The next waves to reach the earth’s surface are secondary or “S” waves. S waves are shear waves that move at a speed of about 1.5 miles per second. P and S waves are body waves that travel through the earth much like sonar waves travel through water. Surface waves, which are slower than S waves, travel along the surface of the earth much like waves at the surface of the ocean. S waves and surface waves cause the most destruction at the earth’s surface.”

What was missing from the seismograph image for the Washington DC area 5.8 magnitude earthquake are the primary or “P” waves. All earthquakes that are the direct result of fault rupture have these primary or “P” waves. Nuclear detonations do not. Underground nuclear detonations are very violent and immediate with no forewarnings whatsoever.

Is it just a coincidence that the %2C[56.559482483762245%2C-62.75390625]]%2C%22overlays%22%3A%7B%22plates%22%3Atrue%7D%2C%22viewModes%22%3A%7B%22map%22%3Atrue%2C%22list%22%3Atrue%2C%22settings%22%3Afalse%2C%22help%22%3Afalse%7D%7D]USGS has recently suspended operations.

Due to a lapse in Federal funding, the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program has suspended most of its operations. While the USGS will continue to monitor and report on earthquake activity, the accuracy or timeliness of some earthquake information products, as well as the availability or functionality of some web pages, could be affected by our reduced level of operation.”

Part of the USGS job is to record earthquakes using seismograph and to make the data available to the public. Suspension of operations = they don’t want you to know that the coming earthquake will be man made. They don’t want you to go over the data and see for yourself that the earthquake primary or “P” waves are missing, as we did in 2011. No primary or “P” waves means a man made earthquake – either another underground nuclear detonation (9/11 and 2011 Virgina tremor) or HAARP induced.

Evidence suggesting a nuclear detonation – the Dyess Air Force base (located approximately 7 miles southwest of Abilene, Texas) reportedly moved nuclear warheads to the East Coast, for no reason, on September 3, 2013. In September of this year (last month) it was alleged that Dyess Air Force Commander authorized unknown parties to transfer nuclear warheads to an unknown location on the East Coast of the United States, where the warheads would then be picked up and potentially utilized.

Nuclear warheads moved to the East Coast + the DHS/FEMA/WMD conducting a Massive Earthquake Drill Oct. 17, 2013 + the U.S. could default on the same day Oct. 17 = FALSE FLAG

WASHINGTON GOVERNOR JAY INSLEE has proclaimed October as Washington DC State Disaster Preparedness month.

Former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano ABC News Aug 27, 2013: “A massive and “serious” cyber attack on the U.S. homeland is coming, and a natural disaster — the likes of which the nation has never seen — is also likely on its way.

Why is October 17 a significant date for a planned false flag? October 17 is also the day the U.S. government runs out of money to pay its daily bills if the U.S. Congress does not raise the debt limit. October 17 is the date when the U.S. defaults.

Department of the Treasury Secretary Jack Lew in a letter released Wednesday – “Treasury now estimates that extraordinary measures will be exhausted no later than October 17. We estimate that, at that point, Treasury would have only approximately $30 billion to meet our country’s commitments,” he said in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio). “This amount would be far short of net expenditures on certain days, which can be as high as $60 billion.

Members of the Washington Military Department (WMD) will be prepositioned throughout Washington DC on October 17 when the DHS/FEMA conducts its Massive Earthquake Drill – an exercise that will coincide exactly with the U.S. debt default. The Washington Military Department consists of the Washington Army National Guard, the Washington Air National Guard and Washington State Guard – all “military” personnel.

The DHS, in co-operation with the U.S. Air Force and Navy (controllers of the earthquake inducing weapon of mass destruction called HAARP) are making preparations to trigger a massive earthquake in the United States – Obama’s October Surprise = martial law. How is the U.S. Air Force and Navy involved? The 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunamis were man made. Both induced off the coast of Japan using a United States weapon of mass destruction called HAARP. HAARP is a military controlled weapon. HAARP is a key component of the U.S. Defense Department Ballistic Missile Defense System. It is controlled by the U.S. Air Force (Boeing X-37B Orbital HAARP and the land based HAARP arrays in Alaska) and Navy (Sea-Based X-Band Radar HAARP platform (SBX-1)).

The HAARP WMD facility in Gakona, Alaska, has been taken offline since early May of 2013. HAARP is still transmitting the earthquake inducing frequency 2.5hz but public access to the data through the Internet has been terminated. HAARP’s own magnetometer waterfall charts provided concrete evidence of illegal warfare by Obama and his government.

The Environmental Modification Convention (ENMOD) treaty prohibits the military or other hostile use of environmental modification techniques having widespread, long-lasting or severe effects. It opened for signature on 18 May 1977 in Geneva and entered into force on 5 October 1978. The Convention bans weather warfare, which is the use of weather modification techniques for the purposes of inducing damage or destruction.

Sea-Based X-Band Radar HAARP platform (SBX-1) departs Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, March 31, 2006 after its exterior was repainted with U.S. Navy ship camouflage colors. This U.S. military controlled HAARP formed and steered Hurricane Sandy into the East Coast of the United States in Obama’s 2012 election rigging October Surprise. U.S. patent 4712155 “Method and apparatus for creating an artificial electron cyclotron heating region of plasma”

HAARP was built during the Clinton administration as a weapon of mass destruction capable of knocking out communications (mimicking a cyber attack) over an extremely large area, while keeping the military’s own communications systems working and at the same time induce major flooding or drought in the target area, form and steer hurricanes, and induce earthquakes and/or tsunamis. “

A major IAF exercise continued this week in Israeli skies, where jets simulated a variety of battle scenarios.
The drills began last week with a simulation of long-distance strikes to prepare squadrons for the possibility of attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The various drills are part of a single, very large aerial exercise. Defense officials said no further information could be divulged at this stage.

Should Israel strike nuclear sites in Iran, defense observers widely assume the IAF would also have to focus its efforts on squelching rocket attacks from Tehran’s proxy in Lebanon, Hezbollah, which could target air bases.

The IDF believes Iran has a limited ability to hit Israel with ballistic missiles, and Arrow 2 and Patriot air defense systems are in place to intercept any Iranian attacks.
Last week the army issued some of its most explicit warnings over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program to date, releasing video images of IAF jets conducting midair refueling far from Israel.

“When one mentions that ‘all options are on the table,’ it’s clear that military operations are also being talked about,” the IDF Spokesman’s Office said. “The air force, which is the IDF’s long arm, is responsible for realizing this option if necessary, and to that end squadrons are practicing and strengthening the full range of their abilities, including long-range flights.”

The preparations are aimed at giving the air force the ability to carry out both broad and pinpoint long-range missions.

The military added that the air force has carried out such training on a regular basis in recent years, and tests all aspects of long-distance sorties, from the squadrons in the air to the ability of its command and control center to manage the missions.

Pilots who took part in the exercise said it tested their powers of concentration over an extended period.

Talks in Geneva on Iran’s nuclear program are triggering fears within U.S. intelligence agencies that Israel is hardening its stance on Iran and could conduct a military attack to stave off what the Jewish state believes is a delaying tactic for Tehran to buy time to build nuclear weapons.

The clearest indicator of growing Israeli concerns, according to defense officials, is the recent large-scale Israeli air force drill Tuesday in the northern part of the country.

The exercises along the northern border and over the Mediterranean were considered unusually large.

An Israeli defense source told Israel’s Walla! news outlet: “Changes have recently occurred in the Middle East. The [Israeli Defense Force] is preparing for those changes in both the closer and more distant perimeters, and yesterday’s exercise was intended to signal the IDF’s serious intention of dealing with those problems and thwarting them.”

Additionally, Israeli air forces conducted long-range fighter exercises last week involving in-flight refueling practice.

The talks in Geneva have produced press reports that the Obama administration is preparing to ease sanctions on Iran following conciliatory statements by Iranian Prime Minister Hassan Rouhani at the U.N.
 last month.

Israeli Minister of Strategic and Intelligence Affairs Yuval Steinitz, a confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Wednesday that Israel would welcome an agreement to end Iran’s nuclear arms program. But Israel remains concerned that “Geneva 2013 could become Munich 1938,” Mr. Steinitz said, referring to the agreement appeasing Nazi Germany’s seizure of Czech territory in the months before the outbreak of World War II.

MessagePosté le: Sam 26 Oct - 19:44 (2013)    Sujet du message: OBAMA’S MILITARY PURGE REMOVES 197 OFFICIERS (AND COUNTING) AS DHS TAKES OVER STREETS (VIDEO) Répondre en citant

Friday, October 25, 2013 11:57

After posting yesterday’s blog regarding two of the latest military leaders that Obama has purged, my friend Nena S. sent me the story beneath the videos.  It really helps to paint the bigger picture.

At the same time that Obama is purging the military, he has been busy keeping one of his campaign pledges, which is to create a “civilian national security force, just as strong, just as well funded as the U.S. military”.  There can be little doubt that DHS fits that bill.  This is the same DHS that has solicited for 1.6 billion rounds of hollow point bullets they claim are for “training”.  The question is, why train with hollow point bullets that are not only much more expensive but designed to do maximum damage, and illegal for warfare?

Perhaps Obama is one step ahead of his ‘friend’, the now deposed Muslim Brotherhood and Egyptian President Morsi who was removed from power by the Egyptian military aft the people there rose up en masse.  My friends, we are witnessing what Rush LImbaugh recently called a “peaceful coup”.  How long it will remain peaceful seems to be the question:
Earlier Forbes wrote:  “…at the height of the Iraq War the Army was expending less than 6 million rounds a month.  Therefore 1.6 billion rounds would be enough to sustain a hot war for 20+ years.  In America.

Add to this perplexing outré purchase of ammo, DHS now is showing off its acquisition of heavily armored personnel carriers, repatriated from the Iraqi and Afghani theaters of operation.  As observed by “paramilblogger” Ken Jorgustin last September:

[T]he Department of Homeland Security is apparently taking delivery (apparently through the  Marine Corps Systems Command, Quantico VA, via the manufacturer – Navistar Defense LLC) of an undetermined number of the recently retrofitted 2,717 ‘Mine Resistant Protected’ MaxxPro MRAP vehicles for service on the streets of the United States.”
These MRAP’s ARE BEING SEEN ON U.S. STREETS all across America by verified observers with photos, videos, and descriptions.”
Regardless of the exact number of MRAP’s being delivered to DHS (and evidently some to POLICE via DHS, as has been observed), why would they need such over-the-top vehicles on U.S. streets to withstand IEDs, mine blasts, and 50 caliber hits to bullet-proof glass? In a war zone… yes, definitely. Let’s protect our men and women. On the streets of America… ?”

“They all have gun ports… Gun Ports? In the theater of war, yes. On the streets of America…?
Seriously, why would DHS need such a vehicle on our streets?” “

When we brought you the 9 Military Commanders it was apparent that President Obama was purging the military top brass.
When two days later two more were fired, many reporters started trying to get to the bottom of what President Obama was doing with what he called “my military”. Now what was a noticeable purge of commanders is now topped 197 since 2009!
While the top listed reason is sex, there seems to be several questionable reasons why these guys are being fired. From dereliction of duty to not saluting properly. The list continues to grow.
Never forget what he let out in a Freudian slip. He said it three times in September that we can find:

From Breitbart.com Facebook Page comes a long and detailed list with links!

There have been rather a lot, to say the least, of firings, demotions, relievings and disciplinings of hundreds of officers in our military under this present regime. The grounds range from “leaving blast doors on nukes open” to “loss of confidence in command ability” to “mishandling of funds” to “inappropriate relationships” to “gambling with counterfeit chips” to “inappropriate behavior” to “low morale in troops commanded” to you-name-it-you-got-it…and, now you’re gonna’ get it!

Listed below are some of the various commanders, vice-commanders, etc. who have been relieved, fired, forced into early retirement and otherwise let go of…or, gotten rid of…depending on how one chooses to interpret all this. Grand Total thus far: 197 (Mostly Colonel and above. 127 AF majors included…they all occurred at one time, apparently). Also, provided are 11 links to various articles about said officers and the various ends of their military careers.

This does not include any of the stories about the pressure or attacks, if you will, made on those of all ranks, high and low, done by this regime or their “agents” and based on religious grounds or their stances on traditional marriage or statements or actions that have been deemed offensive to Islam…beliefs held by many who have been persecuted, if not out-right prosecuted, for said religious and/or traditional belief stances.

This if offered not as proof of any attempt to purge our military of those deemed un-fit by this present regime. It is simply offered as a PARTIAL listing of what has happened so far under the present “C-i-C.” Please note “PARTIAL.” This writer does not claim this list is complete.

It remains to be seen if more “disciplinary actions” are taken or are warranted. I simply find myself asking, as the picture below asks:

Destroyers, fighter jets and 34,000 troops are to take part in a huge exercise aimed at bolstering Japan’s ability to protect its remote islands amid a territorial spat with China.

The exercise, which will include live firing, come as Tokyo steps up its global PR campaign by posting videos it hopes will swing world opinion behind its claims to two archipelagos that are the focus of disputes with Beijing and Seoul.

The air-sea-land drill from November 1-18 will involve amphibious landings on the uninhabited atoll of Okidaitojima, 400 kilometres (250 miles) southeast of the main Okinawan island, a defence ministry official said.

Live-fire exercises involving destroyers and F-2 fighter jets will also be conducted, he said.

The island is a considerable distance from the Japanese-controlled Senkaku islands, which China also claims as the Diaoyus.

However, defence force chiefs are considering deploying short-range land-to-sea missiles on the island of Ishigaki, which lies 150 kilometres from the disputed islands, the Asahi and Fuji TV networks said. Both broadcasters said there were no plans to fire weaponry there.

Chinese state-owned ships have sparred with Japanese coastguard boats repeatedly in waters around the Senkakus since Tokyo nationalised three islands in the chain.

Beijing’s boats have frequently been warned off after sailing into waters Japan considers its preserve.

Fighter jets and warships from both sides have also been in the area on numerous occasions, leading some observers to warn of the danger of an armed conflict that could draw the United States in and have disastrous consequences for the region.

November’s drill is aimed at “maintaining and improving the joint operational abilities of the Self-Defence Forces in armed-attack situations”, the Self Defence Forces (military) joint staff said in a statement.

It will feature “a series of actions in defending islands” including joint operations in island landings, it said.

There have been similar drills in the past, including one in November 2011 that involved 35,000 troops.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report October 26, 2013, 6:39 PM (IDT)

Al Qaeda fights in Syria

The defense squads of the Golan villages along the Israeli-Syrian border will be put through their paces by an exercise the IDF’s School for the Defense of Border Locales is conducting next week to build up their readiness and freshen their tactics against terrorist incursions.

debkafile military sources report that the IDF command is deeply concerned by developments of the last three weeks in the southern Syrian sectors facing the Israeli and Jordanian borders: The offensive the Syrian army launched Oct. 8 to clear rebel forces out of the areas adjacent to Golan - and draw a continuous line along those two borders - has been brought to a standstill.

That day too, in a lecture at Bar Ilan University, Israel’s Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz postulated several dire scenarios of terrorist incidents blowing up into full-scale wars.

One of those incidents could start with an IDF army patrol on the Golan running over an explosive device, the second patrol unit rushing to its aid coming under anti-tank fire, and the battalion commander leading the rescue being abducted along with two other soldiers.  The terrorist organization staging this ambush, a transparent reference to Al Qaeda and its affiliates, would use the commotion to raid civilian settlements.

Hizballah would then pitch in with rockets against Galilee towns. In no time, the first ambush would have ignited a multi-front war situation.

Four elements contributed to the halt in the Syrian army’s advance into the border regions, according to debkafile's military sources:

1. The Syrian high command decided that the current state of the conflict is to their advantage and there was nothing to gain from rushing at this time into large-scale assaults which could be costly in casualties.

2.  Hizballah units have withdrawn from the Golan border with Israel and either returned to home bases in Lebanon or massed round Damascus for the final battle to win the rebel-held outskirts, now under siege. So the Syrian army has lost its main fighting ally.

3. Two militias allied with al Qaeda’s Nusra Front stand in the path of the Syrian advance and stopped it in its tracks. Our military sources name them as The Islamic Muthanna Movement and the Harmayn Brigade.

4.  Nusra itself has been able to seize land along the bank of the Yarmuk River not far from the Syrian-Jordanian-Israel border intersection, creating another obstacle.
The alarm in the Israeli and Jordanian high commands over Al Qaeda’s looming encroachments is shared by Saudi Arabia, whose intelligence services now estimate that Al Qaeda and its multiple branches have massed some 6,000 fighting activists in Syria – 12 percent of them Saudi nationals.

Since more are pouring into the country all the time, intelligence experts in Riyadh calculate that the current number will double itself in the next six months. And that will not be the end: the 12,000 jihadists concentrated in Syria by next spring may have multiplied to 15-18,000 by the winter of 2014.

Most of them are streaming in from across the Muslim world including the Russian Caucasian.

Saudi Intelligence chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan, who is in charge of the Saudi effort in Syria, has warned that Riyadh cannot afford to have al Qaeda hanging massively over its front, back and side doors – in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Egyptian Sinai, and threatening to overrun Lebanon and Jordan. A jihadi victory in Syria would boost al Qaeda in Iraq on its northern border.

Israel is in the same position.

Russian strategic forces carried out a large-scale surprise military drill on Wednesday, launching four nuclear missiles that were closely monitored by U.S. intelligence agencies, U.S. officials said.

The drill began around 9:00 am ET and included the test launch of two land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and two submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs).

The test firings were unusual because of the number of missiles fired at one time, said officials who discussed some details of the drill on condition of anonymity.

State Department spokeswoman Alexandra F. Bell confirmed the tests and said the long-range missile firings were “conducted consistent with the requirements of the New START Treaty.”

At the Pentagon, spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith said: ”With regard to Russia’s recent testing of its strategic forces missiles, the United States received the proper notifications prior to the launches.”

Other officials said the tests were notified in advance to the U.S. government as required by a 1988 U.S.-Soviet agreement requiring advance notification of ICBM and SLBM launches. The agreement requires notifying the Nuclear Risk Reduction Center, run by the Pentagon, of the impending launches within four days of their launch.

Mark Schneider, an arms control specialist, said Russian reports of the exercises described the test firings as a “a major strategic nuclear exercise involving a nuclear war.” The exercises also involved Russian President Vladimir Putin as a commander.

Schneider, a policy analyst at the National Institute for Public Policy, said the last similar Russian strategic exercise took place two weeks before the 2012 presidential election and were described as the first time Putin personally tested an automated communication and management system for nuclear forces.

“Minimum deterrence advocates like to ignore these exercises,” Schneider said. “I think they are very important and point out the need to maintain a strong triad” of missiles, submarines, and bombers.

The missiles test fired were identified by the officials with their NATO code names, including a silo-based SS-18 and a road-mobile SS-25, along with the two submarine-launched missiles, an SS-N-18 and SS-N-23.

The SS-18 is Russia’s largest land-based ICBM with a range of up to 10,000 miles and up to 10 warheads, or multiple, independently-targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs).
The SS-25 is a road-mobile missile capable of launching up to four MIRVs and has a range of up to 6,200 miles.
The SS-N-18 Stingray missile can be equipped with up to seven warheads and is carried on Delta III missile submarines. It has a range of up to 5,000 miles.
The SS-N-23 can carry up to 10 MIRVs and has a range of up to 5,000 miles. It is deployed on Delta IV missile submarines.

A Kremlin spokesman in Moscow said the “surprise check” of nuclear forces, aerospace defenses, and naval and strategic aviation were ordered by “Commander-in-Chief, President Vladimir Putin.”

“Ballistic missiles were launched, the air defense and missile defense systems were used,” Dmitri Peskov, the spokesman, was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying. “All launches took place as expected. All of the practice targets were hit.”

Other reports identified the exercise as a “snap inspection.”

The SS-25, which Russia calls the Topol, was launched from Plesetsk and the SS-18, called RS-20V, was launched from Dombarovski located near the border with Kazakhstan in Central Asia.

Additionally, Russian forces fired four short-range SS-26 and SS-21 short-range missiles from the Kapustin Yar test center near the Black Sea. Those missiles traveled over 60 miles.

Air defense forces also fired S-400 and S-300 anti-aircraft and anti-missile interceptors at incoming ballistic missile targets at the Kapustin Yar test range.

The strategic missile exercises highlight Moscow’s large-scale nuclear forces build up under Putin.

Russia is developing several new missiles, including a weapon U.S. intelligence agencies have assessed as a covert intermediate-range nuclear missile called the RS-26 that is being developed and tested in apparent violation of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

The Russian government has denied the RS-26 violates the INF treaty and claims it is a new ICBM, which some arms compliance experts say is a violation of the 2010 New START treaty.

Russia is also developing a new submarine-launched ballistic missile and a new class of missile submarines.

Reaction to 'purge' of generals, flag officers, includes frustration, alarm, worry

Published: 11 hours ago

By F. Michael Maloof and John Griffing

WASHINGTON – President Obama is aiming a “wrecking operation” at the U.S. military, according to a former Defense Department official who was reacting to a WND report about his dismissal of nine generals and flag officers so far during his second term.

And the official was joined by hundreds of commenters who responded to the story with blasts of criticism for the president.

WND reported earlier this week that Obama this year alone has fired some nine generals and flag officers, on top of at least four similar dismissals during his first term.

Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Paul Vallely, an outspoken critic of the Obama administration, explained right away it looked like a part of Obama’s strategy to reduce U.S. standing worldwide.

“Obama is intentionally weakening and gutting our military, Pentagon and reducing us as a superpower, and anyone in the ranks who disagrees or speaks out is being purged,” he charged.

Duty personnel seem to back up this concern, suggesting that the firings are meant to send a message to “young officers down through the ranks” not to criticize the president or White House politics.

“They are purging everyone, and if you want to keep your job, just keep your mouth shut,” one source said.

Frank Gaffney, founder and director of the Center for Security Policy and former Undersecretary of Defense for the Reagan Administration, cast his lot in with Vallely.

“President Obama is engaged in a wrecking operation on the U.S. military particularly, and under the guise of ‘fundamentally transforming America,’ doing what he can to remake society in his image,” he told WND.

Get “Court Disaster: How the CIA kept America Safe and How Barack Obama is Inviting the Next Attack.

Gaffney said he believes Obama may be attempting to install military rule or martial law as part of his plans, saying, “One of the issues that has been raised by colleagues of mine who are serious students of national security policy and practice is that a way of accelerating the transforming of America would be essentially dispensing with our constitutional form of government under the rubric of ‘emergency measures,’ martial law, a military shutdown of our society.

“Does the wrecking operation of the military have something to do with that particular purpose?” asked Gaffney.

Gaffney answers his own question by claiming the existence of an ongoing “purge.”

“Increasingly of late, there is effectively a purge going on of people of faith from the U.S. military, a social engineering of the institution of the military between homosexuals and women in combat, the evisceration of the military’s training resources and in some cases, senior leadership. Could you at some point get to a point where that military was willing to enforce martial law against the people of the United States under circumstances less than national emergency?

“It’s a conversation we ought to be having,” he said.

“When you look at the assaults on the Constitution Obama is engaged in, when you look at the assaults on the military Obama is engaged in, at least it is a scenario [martial law] that could both explain what he is doing and … what he has in mind,” Gaffney continued.

He contends, “The American people don’t want any part of where Obama is taking us, despite the fact they have elected him twice, but I believe that’s mostly because they are not aware of how truly radical and subversive Obama’s agenda is.”

A number of other retired generals told WND they aren’t commenting on the issue, apparently out of caution due to the potential for political retribution by the Obama administration.

Besides, even those who are retired remain linked to the Department of Defense through the pensions, benefits and other ties.

The reluctance to comment extended to the motives behind the handling of these generals’ individual cases, most of whom were dismissed for “personal misbehavior.”

“Yes, I have my own personal thoughts on the matter,” one retired general told WND, “but they are most likely just as authoritative as any other citizen.”

Vallely lacks those inhibitions, charging the White House won’t investigate its own officials but finds it easy to fire military commanders “who have given their lives for their country.”

“Obama will not purge a civilian or political appointee because they have bought into Obama’s ideology,” Vallely said. “The White House protects their own. That’s why they stalled on the investigation into Fast and Furious, Benghazi and Obamacare. He’s intentionally weakening and gutting our military, Pentagon and reducing us as a superpower, and anyone in the ranks who disagrees or speaks out is being purged.”

Vallely served in the Vietnam War and retired in 1993 as deputy Commanding General, Pacific Command. Today, he is chairman of the Military Committee for the Center for Security Policy and is co-author of the book “Endgame: The Blueprint for Victory in the War on Terror.”

Public comments that followed WND’s report on the firing of the generals and flag officers was anonymous, but pointed none-the-less.

“If we don’t impeach Obama SOON, it will be too late for America and Americans,” wrote Geneva Phoenix.

“Barry’s just following the communist playbook. Stalin did the same thing when he came to power…,” said Ernie Kaputnik.

“Obammy is purging the military. He is doing it for two reasons 1) To help destroy America’s ability to protect itself and so it will have less standing in the world. 2) To advance his I’m-better-than-GOD agenda,” added Old Salty Dog99.

“Obama is the cancer within the body of America. It is metastasizing now, and spreading that cancer thru the land…,” wrote Alfred King of Wessex.

Other readers compared Obama’s actions to those of Germany’s Adolf Hitler, or the Soviet Union’s Joseph Stalin.

Three of the nine firings just this year were linked to the controversy surrounding the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. special mission in Benghazi, Libya.

In one case, U.S. Army Gen. Carter Ham, who commanded U.S. African Command when the consulate was attacked and four Americans were killed, was highly critical of the decision by the State Department not to send in reinforcements.

Obama has insisted there were no reinforcements in the area that night.

But Ham contends reinforcements could have been sent in time, and he said he never was given a stand-down order. However, others contend that he was given the order but defied it. He was immediately relieved of his command and retired.

Another flag officer involved in the Benghazi matter – which remains under congressional investigation – was Rear Adm. Charles Gaouette. He commanded the Carrier Strike Group.

He contends that aircraft could have been sent to Libya in time to help the Americans under fire. He later was removed from his post for alleged profanity and making “racially insensitive comments.”

Army Major Gen. Ralph Baker was the commander of the Joint Task Force-Horn at Camp Lamar in Djibouti, Africa. Baker contended that attack helicopters could have reached the consulate in time on the night of the attack.

He was relieved of his command by Ham for allegedly groping a civilian. However, there has been no assault or sexual misconduct charge filed against him with the military Judge Advocates General’s Office.

Six others were removed for a variety of alleged misconduct. They include Army Brig. Gen. Bryan Roberts, who took command of Fort Jackson in 2011; Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Gregg A. Sturdevant, director of Strategic Planning and Policy for the U.S. Pacific Command; Marine Corps Major Gen. Charles M. M. Gurganus, regional commander in the Southwest and I Marine Expeditionary Force in Afghanistan; Army Lt. Gen. David Holmes Huntoon Jr., as the 58th superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.; Navy Vice Adm. Tim Giardina, deputy commander of U.S. Strategic Command; and Air Force Maj. Gen. Michael Carey, commander of the 20th Air Force.

John Griffing contributed to this report from Texas.

ORDS, a previous generation of weaponized robots, had its combat duties curtailed when it made movements without being given a command. (Photo: QinetiQ)

Robots armed with automatic weapons, anti-tank missiles and even grenade launchers are marching, er, rolling ever closer to the battlefield now that they’ve shown they can actually hit what they’re supposed to.

Four robotics companies — HDT Robotics, iRobot, Northrop Grumman and QinetiQ — recently ran their M240 machine gun-armed robots through a live-fire demo at Fort Benning in what has been dubbed the “Robotic Rodeo.” The point was to give the brass a chance to see just how viable such systems are.

The Army, which issued a favorable assessment of the technology last week, doesn’t see our armed robotic overlords as weapons taking the place of boots on the ground, but rather as combatants working alongside troops in the field.

“They’re not just tools, but members of the squad. That’s the goal,” Lt. Col. Willie Smith, chief of Unmanned Ground Vehicles at Fort Benning told Computerworld. “A robot becoming a member of the squad, we see that as a matter of training.”

Senior Army officers attending the rodeo appeared satisfied with the robots after seeing them accurately hit targets 500 feet away, and they hope to see battle ‘bots in action within five years.
“We were hoping to see how they remotely control lethal weapons,” said Smith. “We were pleased with what we saw here. The technology is getting to be where it needs to be.”
This isn’t the first time the Pentagon has played with weaponized robots, but earlier experiments proved such machines weren’t ready for primetime after some of them moved without commands.

Northrop Grumman’s CaMEL (Carry-all Mechanized Equipment Landrover), among the armed robots at the rodeo, can be fitted with automatic weapons, anti-tank missiles and grenade launchers. It can run for more than 20 hours on 3.5 gallons of fuel, according to the company, and carry a load of 1,000 pounds. It also can produce power to charge batteries or power other systems.

“CaMEL is a multifunction platform that can quickly transform from supporting troops to protecting troops as an armed wingman, increasing the firepower of dismounted platoon and company maneuver units,” said Phil Coker, director of the Integrated Platform Solutions business at Northrop Grumman’s Information Systems sector, in a statement. “Its hybrid engine allows the armed CaMEL to operate very quietly – a real plus on the battlefield – and travel farther to provide firepower where it’s needed.”

From U.S. Pacific Fleet Public Affairs

CANBERRA, Australia (NNS) -- The commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet reaffirmed America's commitment to the Indo-Asia-Pacific rebalance during a keynote speech here, Oct. 31.

In his first international trip since assuming command Oct. 16, Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr. delivered his remarks at the Kokoda Foundation Conference during a trilateral strategic dialogue among Australia, Japan and the United States.

"Let me assure you, if you only remember one thing from my remarks tonight, it should be this," Harris said. "You can count on the United States of America."

Fellow keynote speakers at the conference were Australian Defense Minister Senator David Johnston; Yoshitaka Akimoto, Japan's ambassador to Australia; and John Berry, U.S. ambassador to Australia.

The Kokoda Foundation researches Australia's national security challenges and fosters the development of a new generation of future strategic thinkers who are well-equipped to deal with the diverse security challenges that lie ahead, according to the foundation's website.

Harris stressed the importance of strengthening economic, diplomatic and military cooperation among the United States and allies to ensure REGIONAL STABILITY, PEACE and PROSPERITY .

"The relationships between our nations are as important to our future as they have been to our past. This is why I'm committed to deepening the maritime piece of our defense relationships with our allies and security partners throughout the Indo-Asia-Pacific," Harris said. "My intent is not to plan for war against any particular nation, but rather to lessen the chances of conflict by increasing SECURITY and STABILITY more broadly throughout the region. But the Pacific Fleet is prepared, unequivocally, to respond to threats to our nation, our interests and our allies from a position of strength."

Noting that past cycles of austere economic conditions and domestic political turmoil did not stop America from persistently deploying capable naval forces to the region for the past 70 years, Harris confidently stated that the rebalance will make future presence even more robust.

"No one should question our commitment to the rebalance," Harris said. "Not only can we do this, we are doing this. The physical manifestations of our rebalance in new platforms, equipment, and technology are plain to see."

Indo-Asia-Pacific rebalance initiatives by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps team include the ongoing first deployment of the new Littoral Combat Ship to Southeast Asia, the deployment of Marines to Australia, the arrival of Virginia-class submarines and San Antonio-class amphibious landing dock ships, and the future deployment of the P-8 Poseidon, the MV-22 Osprey, and the Joint Strike Fighter aircraft.

These new platforms will be combined with innovative operational concepts and led by naval commanders with extensive experience in the region. Harris said this enhanced naval power will be used to increase critical multilateral activities where regional navies can operate together to combat destabilizing maritime problems such as piracy.

Harris concluded that an increased intellectual focus brings a strong American vision for the region.

"Our president and secretary of defense have been crystal clear," Harris said. "We will rebalance to the Indo-Asia-Pacific, we will properly resource the rebalance, and we will work closely with our allies and partners as we do so.

"Make no mistake, the United States is and will remain a Pacific power."

By U.S. Navy
– October 30, 2013Posted in: Be Ready, Information Dominance, Sailing Directions, Technology, Warfighting First

By Vice Adm. Ted N. “Twig” Branch
Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Dominance (N2/N6)

In a recent speech, CNO outlined his four areas of focus for 2014. One of those is “Electromagnetic Spectrum Maneuver Warfare (EMMW).” That title may be a tongue twister, but the underlying concept will prove critical to Navy warfighting success in the coming decades.

A radar dish aboard Mobile At-Sea Sensor (MATSS) barge (IX-524) undergoes final testing before upcoming flight test mission FTM-16.

EMMW is an operational approach to seizing the initiative across the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS). The goal is to combine EMMW capabilities in the sea, air and land domains to generate enhanced combat effects. EMMW, in essence, means leveraging the cyberspace domain and the full electromagnetic spectrum for both offensive and defensive effects.

EMMW is not a program, or system, or even a refined concept of operations. It is an emerging operational art, one we must master to fully understand the battlespace. We must then use that awareness to better employ our own forces while altering the enemy’s perception of the battlespace and minimizing his freedom of maneuver within it.

Shooters aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) give the signal to launch an E-2C Hawkeye from the Liberty Bells of Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 115 from the ship’s flight deck.

As information, carried as Internet Protocol formatted data, becomes increasingly integrated with the transmission medium (e.g. light in a fiber optic cable, terrestrial radio waves, or satellite links), our ability to leverage the EMS in its entirety and counter the adversary’s use of it becomes an essential element of any Navy operation. EMMW is about protecting our networks, infiltrating the enemy’s networks, jamming, and leveraging all of our sensors and transmitters so that we maintain the freedom to act across the entire spectrum.

Our initial focus on mastering EMMW has been on the cyberspace mission area, putting in place the required manpower structure and creating the necessary organizational constructs. That effort continues, but we are now broadening our focus to include the entirety of the EMS. Moreover, we are building on the work undertaken in the last several years to improve our Electronic Warfare systems in the face of sophisticated anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) threats.

I believe EMMW is so critical to our future that I wanted to highlight it here. From the newest seaman apprentice to our most senior leaders, fleet support of the concept and its underlying technologies is essential to our mastering and controlling the spectrum.

We’ve clearly made great strides in the cyberspace domain and in improving our EW capabilities. We must now embrace this EMMW approach, train to it, practice it, develop innovative applications and make it second nature across the fleet.

Electronics Technician 3rd Class Michael Isenmann prepares to work on an SPS-49 radar antenna aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).

If you look around on any ship, submarine or aircraft, you’ll see all the antennas, transmitters, receivers, etc. we use to communicate, track our adversaries and employ our weapons systems. All that gear operates using the EMS. It is abundantly clear that we depend on operations across the EMS to bring our forces to the fight, and to decrease the adversary’s combat capability.

EMMW is crucial to our ability to win in the information age. You’ll hear more from us as we develop and improve the way we integrate and use the systems operating in and through the electromagnetic spectrum.

Japan is preparing to launch a major war games exercise today, in a calculated move to bolster its defences amid rising regional tensions.

An estimated 34,000 Self-Defence Force troops, accompanied by destroyers and F-2 fighter jets, are scheduled to take part in the large-scale exercise, which will run until November 18.

Drills will take place on air, sea and land, with exercises including live firing and amphibious landings and trial scenarios enacting how troops can best defend an island under attack.

At the same time, the Japanese government is also launching a global PR campaign, asserting its claims to two archipelagos disputed by China, South Korea and Taiwan with the release of on-line videos in ten languages.

The war games were signed off by Shinzo Abe, the prime minister, who has made a point of taking an increasingly hawkish stance in relation to decades-long territorial disputes since coming to power last December.

Japan has clashed repeatedly with its neighours in recent months over territorial disputes, the most high-profile being the Japanese-controlled Senkaku islands, claimed as Diaoyu in China.

In a reflection of escalating tensions, Japan scrambled fighter jets on three consecutive days last week in response to Chinese military aircraft flying near Japanese airspace in the region.

Japan's rhetoric has also stepped up a notch, with Itsunori Onodera, the defence minister, accusing China this week of jeopardising peace due to its claims over the disputed East China Sea islands.

The war games are unlikely to improve relations: in a potentially controversial move, defence chiefs are considering deploying short-range land-to-sea missiles on Ishigaki island, which lies less than 100 miles from the disputed Senkakus, according to local media.

There are, however, reportedly no plans to use of live firing in the Ishigaki area, where Chinese state-owned boats have regularly clashed with Japanese coastguards over the past year due to its proximity to the Senkakus.

The pending military exercises will also involve troops practicing an amphibious landing on Okidaitojima, an uninhabited atoll 250 miles southeast of Japan's main Okinawa island.

Coinciding with the games is a major global PR campaign by the government which has launched a YouTube channel devoted to conveying to the world its position in relation to its territorial disputes.

The short films, which outline the history of Japan's territorial claims in relation to two archipelagos, have already become a YouTube hit: the 90 second video relating to the Senkakus has been watched by more than a quarter of a million viewers since it was posted on-line in mid-October.

The films are currently in Japanese but will soon be translated into ten languages, including Chinese and Korean, as part of the government's 120 million yen (£760,000) campaign to bolster global support.

"It is important that the international community obtain correct understanding over situations surrounding Japan including territories," said a ministry spokesman.

"We are also preparing three other short movies on the Senkaku islands and one on the issue of Takeshima [South Korean-controlled islands also known as Dokdo, which are claimed by Japan].

"The new ones will be just 30 seconds in length and we hope they will be watched by smartphone and tablet users." Japan's neighbours have reacted angrily to the on-line videos, with South Korea lodging a formal protest and China voicing its disapproval.

"Whatever propaganda tools Japan employs to support its illegal claim, it wil not change the fact that the Diaoyu Islands belong to China," said Hua Chunying, a Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman.

"We strongly urge the Japanese side to correct its attitude, stop all provocative words and actions and make concrete efforts for the proper management and resolution of the question of the Diaoyu Islands."

By Peter Apps

LONDON | Fri Nov 1, 2013 3:15am EDT

(Reuters) - When NATO forces start a major exercise in Latvia and Poland this weekend, they will be rehearsing how to oust an anonymous invading enemy from a fictional region.

For some, however, exercise "Steadfast Jazz" will test how the Western alliance could deploy rapid reaction forces to its eastern flank - which borders Russia.

A militarily resurgent and swiftly rearming Russia is alarming NATO states that lie close to its territory, chiefly the Baltic States. Other alliance members are simply baffled, wondering why Moscow feels the need to spend vast sums on meeting a threat from the West they say will never materialize.

NATO stresses that the wargames are not aimed at Russia directly, although some officials say part of their point is to reassure eastern member states at a time when Russia is probing NATO airspace with bombers, building warships and conducting ever more sophisticated exercises.

From November 2-7, "Steadfast Jazz" will involve about 7,000 troops and other personnel including special forces, as well as tanks, aircraft and ships. Officially the NATO Response Force is designed to operate anywhere in the world.

But in the Baltic States, which once lived under the Soviet Union, the wargames are also a rehearsal for an unlikely but plausible scenario closer to home.

"Russia as a country in the last five years has been increasing its assertiveness in the Baltic," Latvian defense minister Artis Pabriks told Reuters. "'Steadfast Jazz' is important to us as these are the first exercises where we really train to defend our territory."

NATO's Supreme Allied Commander General Philip Breedlove said the exercise would show the alliance's ability to fight sophisticated wars and defend its territory. Russian monitors would be invited.

"We have to be prepared for more high end military operations," he said in September, adding that NATO's counter- insurgency experience from Afghanistan was no longer enough.

By "high end" Breedlove meant combating any possible threat from a well-armed state, rather than relatively crudely-armed guerrillas as in the alliance's most recent operations.

Russia's "high end" capability, experts say, is improving fast and NATO is responding. Apart from "Steadfast Jazz", NATO training near Russia recently included the "Brilliant Arrow" fast jet exercise in August in central Norway.

Such activity could antagonize Russia further. President Vladimir Putin has long complained that the collapse of the Soviet Union allowed the West to expand too far into Russia's traditional sphere of influence - particularly the former Soviet Baltic states.

Moscow and Washington have worked together in recent months on removing Syria's chemical weapons, but strains are clear.

For Putin, a stronger military and more assertive foreign policy are central to Russian ambitions. "Ensuring Russia has a reliable military force is the priority of our state policy," he said earlier this year.

"Unfortunately, the present world is far from being peaceful and safe. Long obsolete conflicts are being joined by new, but no less difficult ones. Instability is growing in vast regions of the world."

Last year, Russia announced its defense budget would rise by about 25 percent, pushing spending above that of France and Britain. Moscow says it will spend $700 billion by 2020, hoping to equip at least 70 percent of 1 million active-duty personnel with modern weapons. That will include 2,300 new tanks, 1,200 new helicopters, 15 new surface ships and 28 submarines.

Nikolas Gvosdev, professor of national security studies at the U.S. Naval War College, said Russia wants to regain something of its Soviet-era standing in the world. "It is restoring its conventional capabilities to back up claims to great power status," he said.

In operations reminiscent of the Cold War, Russian bombers now periodically approach NATO airspace. In response, British fighters scrambled 29 times in 2010-12 while non-NATO Japan and even neutral Sweden have been on the receiving end of such missions.

Latvia says Russian military aircraft have come close to flying over its territory 37 times in 2013 alone, compared with perhaps once or twice a year five years ago. Naval activity has risen, including a task force sent to the Arctic in August.

"We've seen an increase in the frequency of Russian military activities and the substantial modernization of their capability," General Charles H Jacoby, commander of the U.S. Northern Command, said earlier this year. "While we must strive for increased cooperation... we must continue to be prepared to demonstrate the intent and the capability to defend our interests."

Exercises on land have particularly worried neighbors. Among the largest was September's "Zapad-2013" manoeuvres in Belarus. The Kremlin described these as largely anti-terrorist in nature but foreign analysts said they appeared to revolve heavily around conventional war fighting.

Not everyone believes Moscow can achieve its ambitions. A slump in prices for oil and gas, a major source of revenue, could devastate its budget, and the economy is already slowing.

Within the military, bullying, morale problems and corruption remain rife. Islamist militancy in the Caucasus swallows up resources while some Russian strategists are more worried about China than the West.

Much of Russia's resources, from fresh water to minerals, are in sparsely populated parts of Siberia within relatively easy reach of the Chinese border, while Beijing's military budget is growing even faster than Moscow's.

"(There is) a growing fear that Russia's vast natural resources endowment... is vulnerable if the country lacks the means to protect it," said Gvosdev.

Budget problems mean most NATO states are cutting defense spending. The handful of Russia's neighbors that can afford to raise expenditure, however, are doing so. As early as 2007, Norway announced it would expand its military and move much of it to new bases nearer the increasingly contested Arctic.

Poland is also in the midst of its biggest ever increase in military spending, earmarking $43 billion over the next decade to buy Western systems. Sweden is buying patrol boats.

Western officials say their priority remains to work with Russia. NATO jets have also trained with Russian counterparts on counter-terrorism exercises, while NATO warships have visited Russian ports. This month's NATO-Russia summit in Brussels saw agreement on further co-operation.

In mainstream NATO thinking, Russian behavior such as the "Zapad-2013" exercise is more puzzling than alarming, although eastern members cling to Article 5 of North Atlantic treaty - which obliges members to help any ally that comes under attack.

"The very aggressive posture during... Zapad caused much concern among the Baltic states for whom Article 5 really matters," said one senior Western official on condition of anonymity. "However, the considered view is that the government of Russia does not pose a threat."

Another NATO diplomat told Reuters he believed there was little doubt Moscow was preparing its military for potential conflicts with well-armed nations.

"That has a lot of us scratching our heads and thinking: why?" the diplomat said, adding that NATO states had made clear they had no ambitions to expand eastward. "Why in the world would you actually be arming yourself for a conflict with us? Isn't that all a monumental waste of resources?"

The flagship of Russia’s Pacific Fleet, Varyag, and the country’s most powerful nuclear-powered battleship, Pyotr Veliky, entered the Mediterranean Sea on Saturday.

The crew of 'aircraft carrier killer' Varyag will carry out a number of tasks, some of which will be performed together with the joint group of Russian Navy ships and vessels stationed in the region, Roman Martov, press secretary for Russia’s Pacific Fleet, told Interfax news agency.

VIDEO : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE1HutJFFFE&hd=1

Varyag is to assume the command of Russia’s Pacific Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea, replacing missile cruiser Moskva, said Interfax’s military diplomatic source. He added that there are detachments of marine units employed on ships and vessels of the Pacific Fleet, while its air force wing boasts several Ka-27 helicopters that can conduct rescue and anti-piracy operations and kill submarines.
col-med flright a écrit:

Varyag belongs to Slava-class cruisers (according to NATO classification). Completed in 1989 and operating in the Russian Pacific Ocean Fleet since 1990, it has: 16x P-1000 Vulkan anti-ship missiles, 2x RBU-6000 anti-submarine mortars, 8x8 S-300PMU Favorit (SA-N-6 Grumble) long-range surface-to-air missiles, 1x twin AK-130 130mm, 6x AK-630, 2x OSA-MA (SA-N-4 Gecko) SR SAM installations, 8x SA-N-6 Grumble.

Armor: Splinter plating.

Aircraft carried: 1 Ka-25 or Ka-27 helicopter

Apart from Varyag, there are currently several Russian cruisers in the Mediterranean Sea - including missile destroyer ‘Smetlivy’ and landing craft carriers ‘Aleksandr Shabalin,’ ‘Novocherkassk,’ and ‘Minsk.’

Russia’s most powerful battleship and the flagship of the Northern Fleet, Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great), passed through the Strait of Gibraltar and anchored in the Alboran Sea on November 2.

The warship that left the Northern Fleet's main base in Severomorsk on October 22 managed to cross the northeastern Atlantic despite stormy weather conditions. The crew successfully conducted dozens of exercises, including air defense and anti-submarine training. The cruiser logged over 3,200 nautical miles during the trip.

Viktor Chirkov, admiral of the fleet, said in September that the Russia Navy is set to build its presence in the Mediterranean Sea, particularly in the area close to Syrian shores. It intends to increase its number of battleships in the area by up to ten.
Russia began its military build-up in the region in December 2012, establishing a constant presence in the Mediterranean Sea.

Mounting pressure for a Western strike on Syria has seen naval forces both friendly and hostile to Damascus build up off the embattled country’s coastline.

The potential of a US strike against Syria in response to an August 21 chemical weapons attack in a Damascus suburb gained steam on Wednesday, when a resolution backing the use of force against President Bashar Assad's government cleared the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on a 10-7 vote.

President Obama has decided to put off military action until at least September 9, when the seemingly recalcitrant US House of Representatives reconvenes to vote on the measure.
Following the August 21 Ghouta Attack, which killed anywhere between 355 to 1,729 people, the diplomatic scramble to launch or stave off a military strike on Syria was mirrored by the movement of naval forces in the Eastern Mediterranean, off the coast of Syria.

The deployment of US and allied naval warships in the region has been matched by the deployment of Russian naval warships in the region.

While the Western vessels have in many cases been deployed in the event a military strike against Syria gets a green light, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Russia’s naval presence is needed to protect national security interests and is not a threat to any nation.

Below is a brief summary of the naval hardware currently amassed off Syria’s shores.

The US Navy has five Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers off the coast of Syria, which its top admiral says is “fully ready” for a wide range of possible actions.

The USS Ramage, USS Mahan, USS Gravely and USS Barry are each armed with dozens of Tomahawk cruise missiles, which have a range of about 1,000 nautical miles (1,151 miles) and are used for precise targeting.

The ships are also equipped with surface-to-air missiles capable of defending the vessels from air attacks.

On August 29, the USS Stout was sent to relieve the USS Mahan, but a defense official told AFP that both ships might remain in the area for the time being.

Adm. Jonathan Greenert, the chief of naval operations, told an audience at the American Enterprise Institute on Thursday that the US ships are prepared for what he called a "vast spectrum of operations," including launching Tomahawk cruise missiles at targets in Syria, as was done in Libya in 2011, and protecting themselves in the event of retaliation, AP reports.

In addition to the destroyers, the United States may well have one of its four guided missile submarines off the coast of Syria. At one time these subs were equipped with nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles. Nowadays, they are capable of carrying up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles.

It was also announced on Monday that the US had deployed the USS San Antonio, an amphibious transport ship, to the Eastern Mediterranean.

The USS San Antonio, with several helicopters and hundreds of Marines on board, is “on station in the Eastern Mediterranean” but “has received no specific tasking,” a defense official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The deployment of the USS Antonio comes despite promises from President Obama that no amphibious landing is on the agenda, as the US has ostensibly ruled out any “boots on the ground.”

While the wording of the draft resolution set to be put before the House does not permit a ground invasion, the wording of the text could potentially allow troops to carry out non-offensive operations within Syria, including securing chemical weapons stockpiles and production facilities.

On Monday, it was also announced the USS Nimitz super carrier had moved into the Red Sea, though it had not been given orders to be part of the planning for a limited US military strike on Syria, US officials told ABC News.

The other ships in the strike group are the cruiser USS Princeton and the destroyers USS William P. Lawrence, USS Stockdale and USS Shoup.

The official said the carrier strike group has not been assigned a mission, but was shifted in the event its resources are needed to “maximize available options.”

The USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and strike group is also in the northern Arabian Sea.

Russia, Syria’s longtime ally and primary arms supplier, has its only overseas naval base located in the Syrian port of Tartus, which has reportedly been used to support Russia’s growing number of naval patrols on the Mediterranean. However, Russia insists recent efforts to bolster its naval presence in the region are not in response to Western threats of a military strike.

Reported movements of many Russian ships in the region are coming from anonymous Russian defense ministry sources and have not been confirmed. RT contacted the Russian Navy to ask for confirmation of the reported ship movements, though no comment was forthcoming.

On Friday, for example, the large landing ship, Nikolai Filchenkov, was reportedly dispatched from the Ukrainian port city of Sevastopol for the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiisk, from where it is eventually expected to reach the Syrian coast, a source told Interfax News Agency.

"The ship will make call in Novorossiisk, where it will take on board special cargo and set off for the designated area of its combat duty in the eastern Mediterranean," the source said.

RIA news agency quoted an unnamed senior naval source as saying on Friday that the frigate, Smetlivy, would leave for the Mediterranean on September 12-14, and the corvette Shtil and missile boat Ivanovets would approach Syria at the end of the month.

The Russian destroyer Nastoichivy, which is the flagship of the Baltic fleet, is also expected to join the group in the region.

Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov, who was unable to comment on specific reports, said on Thursday the Russian navy currently had a "pretty strong group" there.
"The Russian navy does not intend to take part directly or indirectly in a possible regional conflict," he told the state Rossiya 24 broadcaster.

"Our navy vessels are a guarantee of STABILITY, guarantee of PEACE, an attempt to hold back other forces ready to start military action in the region."

Also reportedly in place in the eastern Mediterranean are the frigate Neustrashimy, as well as the landing ships Alexander Shabalin, the Admiral Nevelsky and the Peresvet.
They are expected to be joined by the guided-missile cruiser Moskva.

The Moskva, set to arrive in a little over a week’s time, will take over operations from a naval unit in the region.

"The plans of the naval unit under the command of Rear Admiral Valery Kulikov had to be changed a little. Instead of visiting a Cape Verde port, the cruiser Moskva is heading to the Strait of Gibraltar. In about ten days, it will enter the eastern Mediterranean, where it will replace the destroyer Admiral Panteleyev as the flagship of the operative junction of the Russian Navy," a source told Interfax on Wednesday.

Panteleyev incidentally, only arrived in the east Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday after leaving the Far-Eastern port city of Vladivostok on March 19 to join the Russian standing naval force as its flagship.

The SSV-201 reconnaissance ship, Priazovye, is also reportedly on its way to join the group in the Eastern Mediterranean. Accompanied by the two landing ships, Minsk and Novocherkassk, the intelligence ship passed through the ‘Istanbul Strait’ on Thursday, which helps form the boundary between Europe and Asia.

On August 31, French military officials confirmed the frigate Chevalier Paul, which specializes in anti-missile capabilities, and the transport ship, Dixmude, were in the Mediterranean. French officials denied they are in the region to participate in military action against Syria, but were rather taking part in training and operation preparations.

Despite their presence in the region, France currently has no ship-based missiles, so any offensive action would come from the air in the form of long-range Scalp missiles, similar to those the nation used in Kosovo in 1999 and in Libya in 2011, Time reports.

Two Italian warships set sail for Lebanon on Wednesday in a bid to protect 1,100 Italian soldiers in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, Syria’s southeastern neighbor, Agence France Presse reported.

The Italian ANSA news agency reported that a frigate and a torpedo destroyer boat departed from Italy's southeastern coast on Wednesday and would provide additional protection to the soldiers in the event the Syrian conflict further deteriorates.

As of August 29, the Royal Navy's Response Force Task Group was deployed in the Mediterranean as part of long-planned exercise Cougar 13. The force includes helicopter carrier HMS Illustrious, type-23 frigates HMS Westminster and HMS Montrose, amphibious warship HMS Bulwark and six Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships.

The Trafalgar-class nuclear submarine HMS Tireless was also believed to be in the area at the time, after it was detected in Gibraltar.

On the same day that British media started touting Britain’s “arsenal of military might” which would be available in the event of intervention, British Prime Minister David Cameron lost a vote endorsing military action against Syria by 13 votes. In light of the shocking parliamentary defeat, Foreign Secretary William Hague said the UK would only be able to offer the US “diplomatic support.”

The UK’s Conservative Chancellor, George Osborne, confirmed that the UK would not seek a further vote on action in Syria.

And whether it’s top nuke commanders being removed for failing to play ball with the global elite, or just silencing potential whistleblowers, top military generals are now speaking out about the ‘mass purge’ within the United States military.

One such general, a recipient of the Medal of Honor, has now gone on record in speaking with news organization WND about the mass culling of high level military officers on behalf of the Obama administration. Retired Army Maj. Gen. Patrick Brady says that the attack on high level military personnel is so great that it has now obliterated the morale of troops at large, but is more importantly centered in terminating any high level individual that will not go along with the plan.

“There is no doubt he (Obama) is intent on emasculating the military and will fire anyone who disagrees with him,” the retired general told WND.

General Brady’s admission comes just after two of the top nuclear commanders in the United States were terminated and suspended amid the high level military intelligence we released surrounding the secret transfer of nuclear weapons from a Texas Airforce base to South Carolina. And while the terminations were originally reported on by the Associated Press, who has been covering the issue in depth and even hinting towards our coverage of the missing nuke within their reports, it was revealed by the agency that the terminations and suspensions were actually found out through leaked emails.

In other words, the mass purge of military officials was never truly intended to meet the public eye. But even in the face of government secrecy surrounding the issue, numerous news organizations and media figures have now come out and highlighted the purge of top nuke commanders and others. From Michael Savage launching an investigation into the missing nuke issue and calling for answers, to WND questioning officials over the military intelligence.

Overall, the new media has forced this issue into the spotlight, reaching millions with the powerful information that has been confirmed time and time again by scenarios like Senator Lindsey Graham’s same day speech regarding a nuclear strike on the exact destination of the nuclear warheads. Meanwhile, the establishment has been busy in attempting to eliminate high level military officers who will not blindly follow commander Obama on his every unconstitutional demand.

Mattis-isms added...

A retired three star Flag Officer recently stated he knows of certain unnamed individuals within the Armed Forces of having at least considered the possibility of an armed coup d'état aimed directly at of Barack Obama, as reported by the on-line news portal Government Executive on Nov. 4, 2013.

Retired Army Lt. General William G. "Jerry" Boykin states he's personally spoken to service members who would:

Like to see the Armed Forces 'fulfill their constitutional duty and take out the president.'

However, Boykin also correctly stated that:

Our Constitution puts a civilian in charge of the military and as a result a coup would not be constitutional.

You're not going to see a coup in the military.

The retired three-star again went on to correctly state that those in uniform realize that even if their take on the US Constitution is different by certain civilians in positions of power, those in service keep their opinions to themselves until the leave the military.

I talk to a lot of folks who don't support where Obama is taking the military, but in the military they can't say anything.

Another retired Flag Officer, Lt. Gen. Patrick Brady, US Army (Retired) Congressional Medal of Honor, was more straightforward that his former comrade-in-arms.

Brady unleashed his anger at today's crop of officers as nothing more than:

Girly-men leadership [and] medals for not shooting and operating a computer.

Questions Remain of Dumped Marine Four Star...

Fox News reported during January 2013 that there have been whisperings in military circles that the former Supreme Commander of CentCom (Central Command) General James Mattis, US Marine Corps (Retired) was forced to retire by Obama administration earlier this year.

As reported by Fox, General Mattis was relived of his über-powerful post die to the self-admitted bar brawler "increasingly making the White House nervous while butting heads with National Security Adviser Tom Donilon over Iran."

Nicknamed "Mad Dog" and "Chaos" by his Marines, the General is known for his Chesterton-esque quips, such as: (self censored)
  • "I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I'm pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f**k with me, I'll kill you all."
  • "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."
  • "Demonstrate to the world there is 'No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy' than a U.S. Marine."
  • "It is mostly a matter of wills. Whose will is going to break first? Ours or the enemy's?"
  • "Be the hunter, not the hunted: Never allow your unit to be caught with its guard down."
  • "In a country with millions of people & cars going everywhere, the enemy is going to get a car bomb out there once in a while."
